Jasikonis Takes Time Away from Racing

In an Instagram post yesterday, Arminas Jasikonis and Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing revealed that the Lithuanian has made the decision to step-away from high-level racing and motocross. Take a look at the full statement below:

Together with the Gebben van Venrooy Yamaha team, Arminas Jasikonis has made the tough decision to take some time away from MXGP racing and racing at the highest level.

The Lithuanian is still dealing with a head injury and whilst he’s still young has decided to take some time away to focus on his future. In due course, Jasikonis will then decide if he will make a return to the Motocross world and battling in MXGP.
The team fully back Jasikonis with his decision and would like to wish him well for the future whatever it brings.
Arminas Jasikonis: This has been a tough decision to make but together with my team I feel for my career it is important to take time off from the highest level of racing. My head injury together with the little setbacks I have experienced in the past months need time to be assessed. I’m still young and only when I am 100% confident with my health, I will then make a decision for what my future GP racing will bring. I just want to give a big thank you to all our Gebben Van Venrooy Team partners, and also to Klaas, Emile, Ruud and the rest of my team for supporting me in these difficult moments.

MXGP Geared-Up for Epic Monster Energy MXGP of France

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 1 June 2022 – Next on the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar is an old favourite among the paddock, as this weekend Ernèe is set to host this year’s Monster Energy MXGP of France.

It has been a while since MXGP visited the legendary venue, in fact the last time a Grand Prix race took place in Ernèe was back in 2017 which featured Clement Desalle, Antonio Cairoli and Gautier Paulin on the premiere class podium.

Over the course of the last three decades, Ernèe has hosted MXGP numerous times, the first being in 1990 when American Donny Schmit won the 125cc GP on his Suzuki.

This year big things can be expected from the French Grand Prix, as the ‘Circuit Raymond DEMY’ has always provided some of the biggest races in motocross history, take for example the epic 2015 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations that saw Team France top the podium in front of tens of thousands of passionate French fans who proudly sang the ‘La Marseillaise’, along with the legendary 2003 Grand Prix that saw the ten-time World Champion Stefan Everts become the first ever rider to win the triple crown (winning three classes on the same day).

Alongside the regular MXGP and MX2 action, we will also see rounds of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX250 which are currently led by Fantic Factory Team Maddii's Cas Valk and Cornelius Toendel.

There is no doubt that all eyes will be on last weekend’s Grand Prix winner Maxime Renaux of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing who is heading into his home race as the favourite to win. Securing his first ever overall victory in the MXGP class is no doubt going to be a big confidence and motivation boost for the Frenchman to put on his best performance in front of his home fans.

In addition, he is also in the title fight with Team HRC’s Tim Gajser who is 66 points ahead of Renaux. Gajser has struggled in the last two GP’s and has failed to make it onto the podium on both occasions. The French GP will be an opportunity for the Slovenian to get back to winning ways that he showed in the first half of this season and put his illness behind him. For Gajser, it will be the first time that he will race in Ernée since the Monster Energy FIM MXoN in 2015 when he won the B final, as in 2017 he was injured and did not line-up for the Sunday races.

Also needing to make up some valuable points and looking to get back on the box will be Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who missed out on the top three at the Spanish Grand Prix. Prado was looking strong in both races, running at the sharp end before a couple of mistakes and a crash in race two took him out of the running for the overall victory. Prado remains fourth in the standings but we’re still at the halfway stage and there is still time for the Spaniard to claw back some points and get back in the title fight.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff and Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Brian Bogers had a good weekend in Spain as they finished second and third on the podium. Both riders now have two podiums each this season and hopefully they can continue in this direction this weekend and deliver another solid result. Colenhoff was also the qualifying race winner, making it his second this season (Portugal and Spain) and he is clearly showing that he is strong also on the hard-pack tracks.

Looking back at the previous results in 2017, Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer were on the box back when they were fighting for the MX2 title. Jonass won the GP, while Seewer finished third, with Benoit Paturel of Team Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz separating the pair as he finished second on the podium. Jonass and Seewer have some podiums under their belt this season already and this could be another opportunity for them to get back on the box. Meanwhile, for Paturel this will also be a weekend to deliver strong result!

Other names to look out for this weekend include JT911 KTM Racing’s Jordi Tixier, Riley Racing’s Christophe Charlier and Pierre Moine who will all look to put on their best performance at their home round.

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 404 points; 2. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 338 p.; 3. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 292 p.; 4. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 290 p.; 5. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, YAM), 272 p.; 6. Brian Bogers (NED, HUS), 243 p.; 7. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, HON), 242 p.; 8. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HUS), 196 p.; 9. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 194 p.; 10. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, BET), 189 p.;

In MX2, the favourite will no doubt be Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle who was victorious last weekend with the perfect 1-1 score card. Vialle also won the French GP last season in Lacapelle Marival, so pressure will be on the Frenchman to deliver his home fans the top step of the podium.

Vialle also enters the 10th round of the series with the red plate and a 10-point advantage over Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts who had a couple of big crashes, which made for a difficult weekend in Arroyomolinos last week. Though Geerts is known to bounce back when he needs to, so of course we can expect him to be a serious threat for the win this time around.

Team Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Stephen Rubini is a rider to look out for this weekend, as the Frenchman has a real shot of finishing on the box at his home GP. Rubini already has a podium under his belt which he achieved in Maggiora and was close again last weekend in Spain after an impressive third in race one. There is no doubt that Rubini is strong in hard-pack conditions, so Ernèe should be a track suited to him and it will be interesting to see what he can deliver this weekend.

Another favourite for the podium this weekend is Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder who finally got back on the box in Spain with a consistent 2-3 result in the races. It was his first podium since his mega performance in Matterley Basin where he won the qualifying and both races, so should give him a confidence boost heading into the weekend and hopefully we will see more of the German at the sharp end.

Diga Procross KTM Racing’s Liam Everts turned some heads at the Spanish Grand Prix as he delivered two very solid results to finish fourth overall and just one point shy of the podium. Everts has been building his confidence this season, during what is his rookie year in the MX2 class. It’s been nice to see him build-up his results and hopefully a podium will soon be coming for the young rider.

F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Kevin Horgmo and Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup both showed promise in Spain, but some mistakes and crashes proved to be costly for a top overall score. Both riders can be expected to be fast this weekend and it will be interesting to see whether they can challenge Vialle and Geerts who are currently the front-runners of the field.

Of course, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant will be looking for top scores at his home round and will be fighting for a chance to stand on the box again, as will Pierre Goupillon and Tom Guyon of Team VRT KTM Veritise who will once again line-up for the MX2 races this weekend.

French World Champions

Heading into this weekend’s Monster Energy MXGP of France, set for the undulating circuit of Ernee, it isn’t hard to look back at the history of the French motocross riders and feel they have done their share in making the FIM Motocross World Championship a better championship.

Eleven Frenchman have tasted major World championship champagne at the end of a GP season and been crowned FIM Motocross World Champion. The French have picked up 16 major championships in total as many of their world champs scored more than one championship in their careers. French riders have also won the MX3 World championship on four occasions, to take the overall tally to 20 official World Motocross Championships.

Back in 1986 Jacky Vimond became the first ever French rider to win a FIM Motocross World Championship. He did so in the 250cc class, and while Vimond was the pioneer of success for French riders it was Jean Michele Bayle who won 125cc and 250cc titles in 1988 and 1989 and started a frenzy of interest and success for the tri-colours riders.

Bayle who moved to America soon after his GP success in 1988 did still compete in Europe in the winter at the annual Bercy Supercross. Beating the big American riders and making a long list of young French kids in attendance wish they could be like the good looking and very marketable Bayle.

It didn’t come straight away though, and while names like David Vuillemin, Stephane Roncada and Mickael Pichon looked to become the next J.M. Bayle it wasn’t until the summer of 1996 that another amazingly talented Frenchman stole the hearts of the motocross world.

When a 16-year-old Sebastien Tortelli picked up the 125cc world championship ahead of British rider Paul Malin a new era in French motocross was born. Tortelli added the 250 championship in 1998 after a season long battle with Stefan Everts and this opened the floodgates for French success.

Soon to follow came world titles for Frederic Bolley in the 250cc class in 1999 and 2000, Mickael Pichon also in the 250cc class in 2001 and 2002, Mickael Maschio in MX2 in 2002, and Marvin Musquin and Jordi Tixier in the MX2 class in 2009 and 2010 and 2014.

In the MX3 championship three Frenchman have won, with Yves Demaria taking titles in 2004, 2006 and 2007, while Pierre Renet also won in 2009, although those French victories came in a class that was on the edge of being more like European title than an actual World title.

Of course, more recently, it was Romain Febvre winning the MXGP championship in 2015 and Tom Vialle and Maxime Renaux winning the MX2 championship in 2020 and 2021.

The French have also won the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations on six occasions, in 2001 at the famous Namur, Belgium circuit, Kegums, Latvia in 2014, Ernèe, France in 2015, Maggiora, Italy in 2016, England in 2017 and USA in 2018.

You can be sure when the Grand Prix of France fires up on Saturday morning the always large crowd will be standing as close as possible to the circuit to cheer on their local heroes, and you can be sure last weekend’s GP winners, Tom Vialle and Maxime Renaux will be wanting more than anything to repay their countrymen with victory come Sunday night.

Tim Gajser Voted Best Rider Sponsored by Athena at the MXGP of Spain

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 30 May 2022 – For the 2022 season of the FIM Motocross World Championship, we see the return of a very exciting competition, that is the Best Rider of the Year Sponsored by Athena.

Throughout the season fans have the opportunity to cast their votes race-by-race and decide who becomes the ‘Best Rider of the Year Sponsored by Athena’ in MXGP at the end of this year’s championship.

Votes are tallied at every Grand Prix, with the ‘Best Rider of the GP’ being chosen during each event of 2022. The rider who is voted the most times as the best rider, will walk away with the ultimate prize and be presented with the special award for ‘Best Rider of the Year Sponsored by Athena’!

How to vote:

Every Grand Prix Sunday a dedicated post is shared on MXGP’s official Instagram page under which fans can comment who their favourite rider of the weekend is. This competition is only for MXGP riders and the voting closes at 8pm on Sunday.

The comments are then counted and the rider with the most votes is chosen as the best rider of that GP.

At the MXGP of Spain, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser was voted the Best Rider at the MXGP of Spain, despite missing out on a spot on the podium. The Slovenian received 33.3% of the votes, while Maxime Renaux of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing came in close second with 26.6% and Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado with 20% in third.

Tim Gajser continues to lead the competition with eighth points, compared to Jorge Prado’s and Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen’s one point.

The Best Rider of the Year Sponsored by Athena will continue next weekend at the Monster Energy MXGP of France.

Fox Holeshot Films – MXGP of Spain

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 30 May 2022 – MXGP is excited to continue the Fox Holeshot competition for the 2022 season of the FIM Motocross World Championship, together with MXGP partner Fox.

How does the competition work?

Every Grand Prix race, during both MXGP and MX2 races, the rider who crosses the white line painted on the ground at the exit of the first corner secures the Fox Holeshot and receives one point. At the end of the season, the two riders, one per category, with the most Fox Holeshot points will win the mega prize!

At the MXGP of Spain, home hero Jorge Prado of Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing was unmatched out of the gate as he claimed both Fox Holeshots in the MXGP races. Meanwhile in MX2, we saw two new entries to the competition as wildcard rider Rick Elzinga of Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing and rookie Liam Everts of Diga Procross KTM Racing secured a Fox Holeshot each in races one and two!

As it stands, Jorge Prado and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle lead the Fox Holeshot Classifications with nine and five points each.

The Fox Holeshot competition will continue next weekend at the Monster Energy MXGP of France!
