Perfect Scores for Gajser and Vialle at the MXGP of Indonesia

SAMOTA-SUMBAWA (Indonesia) 26 June 2022 – The 12th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship has concluded on the island of Sumbawa which was the host of the 2022 MXGP of Indonesia and saw Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle secure perfect 1-1 scores, as Vialle took back the red plate!

The brand-new venue of Samota Rocket Motor Circuit received raving reviews from the riders, who enjoyed the track that was specifically built for the event. Along with the forty thousand fans that lined the circuit and cheered on their favourite riders.

The Indonesian Grand Prix delivered a lot of excitement on and off the track, with a beautiful opening ceremony which included speeches from the officials, beautiful traditional performances and an impressive air show.

In MXGP race one, it was Team HRC’s Tim Gajser who grabbed the Fox Holeshot, as Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Ben Watson hit the gate and was left with quite a bit of work to do as he started last.

Gajser led the way with Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado, Honda 114 Motorsports’ Ruben Fernandez, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff and Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre right behind.

Febvre then got passed by Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass who got straight onto the rear wheel of Coldenhoff for fourth. Though Febvre was not going to go down without a fight, as he looked to re-group immediately.

A couple of laps later, Jonass crashed and dropped back to ninth. The Latvian got going quickly and was able to pass Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen for eighth, and the Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini to finish the race seventh. Vlaanderen later suffered a bike issue and pulled out of the race.

Team HRC’s Mitch Evans passed F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Jed Beaton for sixth on lap five, as Fernandez lost a bit of ground to Prado, though he remained closed and pushed his fellow Spaniard.

In the end, Gajser took his 12th race win of the season ahead of Prado, Fernandez, Coldenhoff and Fernandez.

In the second race, the Fox Holeshot went to Prado as Gajser got squeezed on the start by Febvre and dropped back to fourth. Fernandez was able to get around Gajser too, though the Slovenian passed him back a couple of corners later.

Prado was looking good in first place, while Gajser began to focus on Febvre who was just ahead. It took the Honda rider a lap to find his way up to second, as he flew past Febvre. A lap later he was onto the rear wheel of Prado and was also able to find his way into the lead.

Further behind, Evans continued his strong run as he closed in on Jonass for fifth. The pair battled closely for three laps, before Jonass crashed. The Latvian got going fairly quickly and only lost two positions to Fernandez and Coldenhoff.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer, who suffered with food poising all weekend, was fighting strong inside the top 10. The Swiss had Guadagnini and Vlaanderen just ahead of him.

Gajser and Prado maintained a consistent gap to one another, as the Spaniard did not let the Slovenian get away easy. Febvre was third and being pushed by Fernandez, who was on his way to another podium finish.

In the end, Gajser was able to go 1-1 ahead of Prado and Febvre who crossed the line third. Fernandez finished fourth ahead of Evans.

Two race wins put Gajser on the podium, Prado finished second on the box for the fourth time this season, ahead of Fernandez who celebrated his second podium of 2022.

Gajser now has an impressive 125 point lead over Prado who moves up to second ahead of Seewer who drops to third.

Tim Gajser: “I'm super happy. I was enjoying all the weekend; the track was super nice. We also had nice fans; we got a really nice welcome here in Indonesia. Overall, I am super happy, going one-one in the races. Thanks to my team, we have been working super hard to get back in good shape. Bike is good. Now we take a little bit of rest and then we are back to it in two weeks”.

Jorge Prado: “It was a good weekend. I felt a little bit better than yesterday; it was a tough track and Tim was unstoppable this weekend, I tried really hard. I got a good start in the second race, but Tim had better pace and passed me but I stayed with him the whole race and Romain was pushing me but I held on. We are going up, now have some time until the next race and I will try to get some rest, do some good training and step it up”.

Ruben Fernandez: “This weekend was good for me overall. Since Saturday, I felt good with the track, third in time practice, third in qualifying and third in the first race, and fourth in the second one for third overall which was very solid. Finally I made it, two Spanish flags on the podium, so I think the Spanish motocross fans will be happy”.

In the first MX2 race of the day, the Fox Holeshot went to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle who led Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts as well as F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Kevin Horgmo.

SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery’s Andrea Adamo did not get off to the best start as a mistake pushed him back to second to last.

Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup then passed Horgmo for fourth, as Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’s Stephen Rubini got by Delvintor Alfarizi for ninth.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder was another rider to get around Horgmo, as de Wolf crashed out of second on the eighth lap which allowed Geerts up to second.

By that point Vialle was already 3.167 seconds ahead of Geerts, who was looking to keep close to the leader and challenge him for the win.

Horgmo then got back past Längenfelder briefly, before the German and was the fastest rider on the track. All while Haarup was looking solid ahead in fourth, though a bike problem took him out of the race.

Geerts then started to make mistakes as he lost ground to Vialle. The gap went up to 9.484 seconds, then up to 12.266 and so on, by which point the Frenchman was looking comfortable and in control.

Further down the order, de Wolf, Horgmo and Längenfelder were locked in a tight battle for third, though de Wolf and Horgmo came together, and both crashed, which allowed Längenfelder to easily cruise into third. de Wolf got going again but began to fade as Horgmo and Rubini made a pass on the Dutchman, he eventually finished eighth.

In the end, Vialle won the opening race by 8.812 seconds over Geerts and Längenfelder.

In race two, the Fox Holeshot went to Längenfelder, though Vialle took the lead immediately with Adamo third ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant. Horgmo had a problem in the opening lap as he dropped back to last, while Geerts was making up some positions in 8th.

Vialle meanwhile continued to lead Längenfelder, as the pair maintained a close gap.

Haarup was looking good in the second race, as he looked to make up for lost points in the opening heat. He pushed Hitachi KTM Fuelled by Milwaukee’s Kay Karssemakers for fifth and was able to make the pass stick, but shortly after he suffered another bike problem and did not carry on with the race.

Längenfelder was looking fast, he set several fastest laps of the race as he closed the gap down to Vialle to less than a second. The GasGas rider continued to urge Vialle along which caused Vialle to make a mistake and go off track and on lap five we saw a change for the lead.

Adamo continued in third, while Geerts was looking to make up valuable positions down in sixth.

Four laps later, there was another change for the lead as Längenfelder tipped over, which meant that Vialle was back in the driving seat and on his way to a perfect GP score.

By the end of the race, Geerts was able to get by Karssemakers for fifth, while Benistant passed Adamo for third on lap 10, which also put him on the box. In the end, Vialle won the race ahead of Geerts, Längenfelder, Benistant and Horgmo.

A 1-1 result gave Vialle the perfect score and put him on the top step of the podium, with Längenfelder second ahead of Benistant third, who celebrated his third podium on the bounce.

Vialle finished the Indonesian Grand Prix first, compared to Geerts’ fourth overall, which also means that the Frenchman now takes back the red plate and leads the championship standings by 4 points.

Tom Vialle: “It was actually a good race weekend, I had a nice feeling on the track since yesterday. In the first race, I had a great start and was leading with more than ten seconds, so I was pretty comfortable. In the second one, I passed Simon in the first corner and I was leading but then I had a mistake and went off track. Simon then led for a few laps and then had a crash so I took over the lead. I’m really happy about the weekend, it was great”.

Simon Längenfelder: “It was a good weekend. For me, the mesh here from the gates are a little bit different. So, I struggled in the qualifying race and in the first race a little bit with that. But I'm happy to get the Holeshot and then I was passed. Tom made a small mistake and jumped off track which allowed me to go first, I then pushed but unfortunately made a small mistake and my front wheel slipped away. But nevertheless, I was second overall this weekend. Very happy to be on the podium and can go home with a smile”.

Thibault Benistant: “I'm really happy to be back again on the podium. I tried to be consistent as much as I can, this is not easy. But yeah, this weekend, I struggled a little bit all weekend. In the end, it was quite a good result for a bad feeling on the bike and on the track, so I’m quite happy, we’re going to try do the same thing at the next one”.

Gajser and Vialle Dominate Qualifying Race in Indonesia

SAMOTA-SUMBAWA (Indonesia) 25 June 2022 – The first race day of the Indonesian Grand Prix has concluded with the MXGP and MX2 qualifying races that saw Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle secure their fourth qualifying race victories of the 2022 campaign.

It was the first opportunity for the riders to get to grips with the brand-new Samota-Sumbawa circuit here in Indonesia. The riders looked to be enjoying the track with Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre among one of the only riders to jump the impressive triple during the races, which left the local fans stunned.

The 12th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship taking place in Sumbawa is the first international motorsports event to be welcomed on the island, with many fans joining for the occasions of the race and the concert taking place this evening at the track!

In the MXGP qualifying race, it was Team HRC’s Tim Gajser who led the way into the first corner after a flying jump out of the gate ahead of Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass who was quickly passed by Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre.

Honda 114 Motorsports’ Ruben Fernandez also started well in fifth with Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado just behind, as the two Spaniards battled.

Gajser was looking solid in the lead, though could not afford to relax with Febvre hot on his heels. Further behind, Jonass was coming under immense pressure from Fernandez who was looking to take third from the Latvian.

On lap six, Jonass crashed out of third and got going again in 11th just behind Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Ben Watson and Nicholas Lapucci of Fantic Factory Team Maddii. By the following lap, Jonass was able to pass both as he continued his climb up the order, to eventually finish eighth.

In the closing stages of the race, Febvre was looking fast as his lap times were quicker than Gajser’s. Though Gajser was able to stretch it out to 8.724 seconds by the chequered flag to secure his second qualifying race win on the bounce.

Tim Gajser: “It was a good day. I was enjoying a lot the track, it was fun… I had a good start in the qualifying race and then I was able to make a comfortable gap immediately, but Romain was pushing, he had good lines and good pace, so in the end he started to get me, I kind of lost the rhythm a little, especially when he closed in. But in the end, I could put it together and it’s good to have first gate pick for tomorrow. I’m looking forward to it”.

In the MX2 qualifying heat, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle got off to a good start as Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts got squeezed on the start straight. Thibault Benistant of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing was second ahead of Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf.

Benistant then made a mistake and got passed by both de Wolf and Geerts as he dropped back to fourth. Just behind Benistant, Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simon Längenfelder began to come under pressure from F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Kevin Horgmo, with Horgmo briefly passing the German at one point, though Längenfelder was able to retaliate quickly.

Vialle looked comfortable in the lead, as de Wolf was increasing his lap times as he looked to close in on the Frenchman. The Dutchman was looking fast, though on lap six crashed and got going again in seventh behind SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery’s Andrea Adamo.

While Geerts inherited second, he was not able to get close enough to Vialle who had already built a strong gap. In the end, Vialle won with a 7.464 second lead, while Geerts was second ahead of Benistant, Längenfelder and Horgmo.

Tom Vialle: “The weekend has started pretty good. In practice, I was first, and I had a good start in the race. Once again, it was a little bit muddy for us in the first two laps, so I tried to take it easy and then I had good pace throughout the race, I felt good on the track and in the first lap in practice. Tomorrow, the start is going to be important, and first gate pick is going to be good for the start. Of course, we want to win as much as possible and tomorrow that will be the goal”.

MXGP Ready for Indonesian Adventure!

SAMOTA-SUMBAWA (Indonesia) 22 June 2022 – The FIM Motocross World Championship returns to Asia this weekend for the first time since 2019 with the MXGP of Indonesia at the brand-new Samota Rocket Motor Circuit!

The Indonesian Grand Prix always provides an incredible atmosphere with a warm and colourful welcome from the local communities, passionate fans, amazing culture and the beautiful area that we always find ourselves in.

This year, the track is entirely new and built specifically to host the 12th round of the MXGP and MX2 rounds, with an exclusive location close to the sea, in the area of Samota. The medium-hard track is 1740m in length and is surrounded by five lakes that act as a natural watering system and has two big paddock structures fully equipped with air conditioning.

The event will foresee various concerts, air shows and the typical warm welcome that MXGP always receives from the passionate Indonesia fans. What also makes this event so special is that it has the support of the local Government of West Nusa Tenggara Province and the island of Sumbawa, who are keen on taking the event to the next level!

The Sumbawa Island itself is located in the middle of the Lesser Sunda Islands chain, with Lombok to the west, Flores to the east, and Sumba further to the southeast. It is known to be the perfect place to surf and dive in the province of West Nusa Tenggara and is best known for its waves, sandy beaches and wild terrain.

The last time that MXGP visited Indonesia was back in 2019 with two incredible events, the MXGP of Indonesia and Asia. The Indonesian Grand Prix was won by Team HRC’s Tim Gajser in MXGP and Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado in MX2, who will this weekend go head-to-head for the win in the premiere class.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser finally got back to winning ways after securing a race victory and getting on the top step for the first time since the Italian Grand Prix in Maggiora. Gajser had some tough races but getting on the top step a couple of weeks ago in Germany and as well with the confidence of winning in Indonesia last time around should make him a GP victory threat as he will no doubt be looking to start a new winning streak!

The Slovenian currently holds a strong lead in the MXGP Championship standings and is 101 points ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer who has been on form lately. The Swiss has scored two podiums on the bounce in France and Germany, one of which was an overall win. It’s looking like in the second half of this season the Yamaha rider is a big competitor for the podium and even race wins, as he won a race in France and Germany too, therefore something big can be expected from him this time around.

Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre made his return to racing in Germany after six months off the bike due to injury. The Frenchman only had a couple of weeks on the bike before he lined-up for an MXGP race and his results were very impressive. Febvre went 4-7 in the races for fifth overall, which is a great starting point for the Kawasaki rider who is looking to get back to full fitness and focus on the title fight in 2023.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado is another threat this weekend as he has been building for the top step this season. Prado did win the GP in Portugal but has struggled ever since, more notably since picking up a shoulder injury in training before the MXGP of Italy. Though the Spaniard claims he knows exactly what he needs to work on, and it will be interesting to see whether these couple of weeks before the Indonesian GP helped him make those changes.

With Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux out for a while due to several broken vertebrae, this gives his teammate Glenn Coldenhoff to make a move up in the championship standings from fifth to fourth. Coldenhoff has already three podiums under his belt this season and he is certainly capable of more as he looks much more comfortable with his set-up.

Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing's Calvin Vlaanderen also has fond memories in Indonesia, having won his first MX2 overall Grand Prix back in 2018. Vlaanderen already got his MXGP GP victory this year, but it would be nice to see him back on the podium again, and maybe this weekend he can make it happen.

Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory riders Brian Bogers and Pauls Jonass are also among the favourites this weekend, as the duo constatly battle at the sharp end and already have some podiums in their pocket this season.

Some Australian riders will be making the trip across to Indonesia to wildcard the Indonesian Grand Prix, with Nicholas Murray and Lewis Stewart set to make their first MXGP appearance and no doubt motivated for some top results. Additionally, there is a local rider Farhan Hendra fahrodjie who will be representing Indonesia this weekend.

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 485 points; 2. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 384 p.; 3. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 366 p.; 4. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 365 p.; 5. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, YAM), 330 p.; 6. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, HON), 304 p.; 7. Brian Bogers (NED, HUS), 252 p.; 8. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HUS), 250 p.; 9. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, BET), 229 p.; 10. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM), 227 p.;

In MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts is the leading man, as 8 points separate him and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle who lost the red plate due to a bike issue in the second MX2 race at the German Grand Prix.

This is just another turn in the title fight between the pair which has never been closer! No doubt both Geerts and Vialle will be looking for top results and the medium-hard terrain should suit both. Vialle was on the podium last time around in Indonesia where he finished second behind Prado, so it will be interesting to see if that will give him any confidence boost for this weekend.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf will be looking to better his results from Germany as he made his return to racing after injury. The Dutchman delivered two solid results of 11-11 but he will no doubt be looking to improve this weekend as he is more than capable of running with the leaders.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant should be full of confidence after his first Grand Prix with in Teutschenthal just a couple of weeks ago. Benistant has been strong in the last two GPs, has won a race at each one and has finished on the box on both occasions. He has three podiums this year, but more will no doubt be on the way as the Frenchman looks on form.

The last over-seas race proved to be a good one for Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup who scored his first podium since 2020 and followed up with two more in Portugal and Trentino. It took him a while to get back on the box, but he did so in Germany as he secured his fourth top three finish of the season which is a brilliant result for the Dane and it would be great to see him add a few more in the next races.

There are a number of local riders taking part in this weekend Indonesia Grand Prix, including Delvintor Alfarizi, Ananda rigi Aditya, Diva Ismayana and Malaysian riders Dharwin Lingam, Muhammad Hakimi Iroly and Phattiphat Theerapongs Rattanap. Alfarizi is the most experience out of the group, having competed previously at the Indonesia Grand Prix in Semarang in 2019 where he finished 16th and 18th in Palembang.
