MXGP Of Sardegna Kicks-Off With the Official Opening Press Conference

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 17 September 2021 - The MXGP of Sardegna official opening press conference took place in the media center of the Crossodromo Le Dune in Riola Sardo to welcome everybody to Sardinia for round 10 of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Present for the conference was Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo, FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela, Sardinia Region Minister of Tourism Giovanni Chessa, Sardinia Region Minister of Industry Anita Pili and President of the Motoclub Le Dune Fulvio Maiorca.

It is an exciting occasion that the FIM Motocross World Championship is taking place in Sardinia and that is thanks to the collaboration of all parties, the great atmosphere, supportive involvement of the local authorities and the paradisiac location that MXGP is set for an amazing event this weekend. More importantly, the Grand Prix here is part of a bigger project set out by the Tourism Department of the Region of Sardinia to host international sports and present Sardinia as the ‘Island of Sport”.

Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo: "It’s a honour to bring MXGP to Sardegna. This track is one of the most challenging and well know among riders as they love to come here for winter training. I’m proud that this weekend we have almost 200 riders lining up, the deep sand of Riola Sardo will give a lot of challenges to all the top riders of MXGP and MX2. With the announcement of Antonio Cairoli’s retirement this will be a big chance to watch him race in Italy. I wish to thank the FIM, the Organizer and the Region of Sardegna, especially the Region Tourism department led by Giovanni Chessa for their support. We hope to have the MXGP of Sardegna in the MXGP Calendar for a long time."

FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela: “Sardinia is a Mediterranean Paradise, being here at this track that is amazing and hosting the FIM World Motocross World Championship is something incredible. Many people worked a lot here to make this track one of the best of the championship. A special thanks to Infront Moto Racing, the Motoclub and local authorities to make the event possible and part of the MXGP calendar in the future”.

Sardinia Region Minister of Tourism Giovanni Chessa: “It’s an honour for me to be here in Riola Sardo to present such event showing the whole world that we brought the FIM Motocross World Championship to one of the most beautiful tracks in the world. The GP here is a project that started 2 and a half years ago when I got this position in the Sardinian region. From the beginning my goal was to bring the best sports events to the region as we are pushing to promote our beautiful region all over the world. Sardinia is a beautiful place where many can enjoy the local cuisine, art and the breath-taking sea views along with all the great sporting events. Sardinia is ready for the FIM World Motocross World Championship and much more. Even during the pandemic situation, we were able to do many events with all the safety request from the government. Our goal is to invest for the future of the region, push the local economy. And the tourism all over the year and not only during the summer. Sardinia is the island of sport”.

Sardinia Region Minister of Industry Anita Pili: “It’s an amazing result to bring the FIM Motocross World Championship here. Speaking with Fulvio some days ago we realised how much we have been worked on that. I know how much the Motoclub worked also on the social side. The sport is necessary for the kids to help them grow up and improve their life”.

President of the Motoclub Le Dune Fulvio Maiorca: “For me, it’s a big emotion, having MXGP here is a dream come true after many years of work behind the scenes. With my wife we travelled all over Europe for more than 10 years, visiting many venues and learning as much as we could to make this dream a reality. Riola is one of the most beautiful tracks in the world and now is a point of reference as a World Motocross track and not only for national races. We worked a lot but of course we still have to improve, but I’m sure that with the help of Infront Moto Racing we’ll achieve the goal. Sardinia is without any doubt the island of motocross and we want to keep the focus for the future. As president of the Motoclub I want to thank all of you for the amazing support”.

Antonio Cairoli: The Will To Win

There is no doubt, Antonio Cairoli has nothing to prove and as he gets closer and closer to his retirement day, the goal might still be to win his 10th FIM Motocross World Championship title, but the pressure to win isn’t like it was when he was going for his first in 2004. Now 35 years old and turning 36 in a week or two, the Italian legend is just having fun while his amazing career lasts.

During our double header in Turkey, Cairoli showed amazing resilience against two much younger men in Jeffrey Herlings and Tim Gajser and despite an age difference of 10 years, Cairoli doesn’t plan to just hang in there for the remainder of this year’s MXGP title race.

“I would never hang in there,” Cairoli said. “That isn’t my style. If I have no particular pain on my body, I know I can still fight at the front. After the surgery with the knee, I still can’t train how I want, but my knee is responding better, and I don’t need to do anything with it after the races. Also, the shoulder is good, so I am not too bad at the moment. I feel okay and I really enjoy riding still and the speed is there and also the will to win.”

The Red Bull KTM Factory riders charge through the field in Turkey and chasing down Herlings, Gajser, Jorge Prado and Romain Febvre proved that there is still fight in the old dog and his experience makes it a little easier to compete in this the most demanding period of Grand Prix motocross.

“Of course, using energy and also specially when the track gets technical and rough, tracks like this one, and not fast and not rough. On tracks like this I can use my technique to not lose too much energy and there are places I can rest and places I need to attack.”

And now, with his retirement being confirmed yesterday, it isn’t just about winning championships on his mind anymore. A young family and other goals have taken over from being a full-time motocross rider, and he looks forward to the next period of his life.

“For sure I will stay in the environment, motocross is still my life, it will remain my great passion and with KTM I will continue my path, even if with a different role. Finally, I want to thank all those who helped me in this adventure, and the many fans who have always given me that charge to give 222%. I still have a lot of things to do in life after 2021, but in the meantime, there is still a goal we need to think about… thanks guys!”

For now, though, battling the best motocross riders in the World is his short-term goal, and no doubt this weekend in Sardinia, the Sicilian veteran will make sure that the youngsters show him enough respect and don’t try taking his dream of another championship away just yet.

MXGP heads to the ‘Island of Sport’ for the MXGP of Sardegna!

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 15 September 2021 – This weekend, the FIM Motocross World Championship heads to the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia for the 10th round of the series.

This will be the first time that Riola Sardo will host official races of the FIM Motocross World Championship, though the circuit itself is very familiar to the paddock, as many of the teams take part in some famous pre season races there, as well as spending much of the off-season putting in laps on the sandy circuit too as it is the perfect facility for winter training and testing.

Riola Sardo is located in the province of Oristano, west of Sardinia close to archaeological sites and the beautiful seaside.

Sardinia is known as the ‘Island of Sport’, a campaign that was recently presented by the Councillor of Tourism in Sardinia Gianni Chessa. Despite the tough pandemic situation, the regional administration has given maximum effort in promoting international sports and bringing the best athletes from all over the world to the breath-taking island.

The FIM Motocross World Championship is among many incredible sports to take place in Sardinia, including the Volleyball World Championship Under 21, Junior Sailing Championship as well as the World Paddle Tour just to name a few.

The track itself is a typical sand circuit, with the sand very particular as despite any rain or water the ground gets dry super quickly. In comparison to other sand tracks, such as Lommel, Riola Sardo is not as deep as ‘the toughest sand in the world’ but is known as ‘Le dune’ because of its natural and very suggestive landscape.

While excitement builds for the MXGP and MX2 races this weekend, these are not the only races that fans will be able to enjoy, both in person and on TV. In addition to the World Championship races, the EMX65 and EMX85 riders will also line-up in Riola Sardo after missing out on the opportunity to race with the MXGP and MX2 riders in 2020.

The official Race Program of the event can be downloaded HERE!

Things are really heating up in the MXGP title chase, as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings is now within touching distance of the title. While he may be fourth in the championship, he is only 34 points down on the series leader Tim Gajser of Team HRC.

And with two consecutive Grand Prix victories for Herlings in Turkey, this is like adding fuel to the already fired up Bullet who is keen not to let the title slip away this time around.

Of course, for Gajser the focus for the next races will be to enjoying his racing and keeping his challengers at bay and maintain a healthy lead over Romain Febvre of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team as well as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, Herlings and Jorge Prado who are right on his tail and looking to pounce at any given opportunity.

While Herlings may have had the best races of the title contenders in Afyon, both Cairoli and Prado were dealt their own misfortunates, with Cairoli crashing during the Bitci MXGP of Turkey and Prado going down at the Bitci MXGP of Afyon, which put the riders out of podium contention on those occasions, though they still managed a podium each nonetheless, just not at the same time.

For Cairoli and Prado the races in Riola Sardo will be like spending time at their local playground as the team spent much of the wintertime training here on the island and putting in the laps at the sandy circuit.  For Prado the next races will be vital to keep close in the championship as he lost quite a few points in Turkey.

These upcoming races will be special and very important for Cairoli as he chases the 10th world title for the final time. The Sicilian announced yesterday that he will retire at the end of the season, so no doubt we will see more incredbile moments from the 9-time World Champion over the next GPs.

But of course they are not the only ones familiar with the track so really it will be a test of who can master the deep sand better – of course favouring good sand riders such as Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis who has always performed well in the sand, take Oss and previous years in Lommel for example.

For Romain Febvre this upcoming Grand Prix will be another opportunity to get back on the podium and stay close to Gajser, as he has not won a race or been on the podium since Lommel.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer, Glenn Coldenhoff and Ben Watson will aim for better results in Sardinia, following two gruelling GP’s in Turkey, which didn’t bring the results that the team or riders had hoped for. For Seewer getting top results was going to be tough anyways as he continues to battle through Epstein Barr Virus.

All three, much like the rest of the paddock, spent some time putting in laps in Riola Sardo during the winter, so it will be interesting to see if they can turn things around for round 10 of the series.

MRT Racing Team KTM’s Alessandro Lupino as well as SM Action Racing Team’s Alberto Forato will hope to put on their best performance for their home race, while Forato will look to repeat his strong results from Turkey once again and get into the top 10 on this occasion too. Meanwhile Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team's Ivo Monticell might miss out on the races in Riola Sardo due to shoulder injury.

In MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux currently holds a comfortable 49-point lead over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini who will be looking to strike back this weekend. For Guadagnini the track of Riola Sardo is among his favourites and a circuit he hopes to perform well on and claim back some vital points to stay close with Renaux who had some very nice battles and race wins in Turkey just over a week ago.

It will be interesting to see whether we will see Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle steal the show with Renaux as they battle for the win again, or whether Guadagnini, or the likes or Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jed Beaton and Kay De Wolf could get involved.

Both factory Husqvarna riders have mounted the podium on several occasions this year, on an array of terrains, but for someone like De Wolf, the sand is of course his strong point. The young Dutchman has been riding really well this season and it would be great to see him back on the box in Riola Sardo, as he is no doubt one of the favourites thanks to his sand riding skills.

Meanwhile Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts will need some good points this weekend if he wants to stay within contention of the title. Much like last year, Geerts has struggled with making some mistakes in the last few GP’s. Though the Belgian has had some top 10 finishes, though it’s not what he needs if he wants to keep the championship dream alive. Geerts, being a Belgian, is a strong sand rider so the track conditions in Riola Sardo should be very well suited to him and hopefully it will be the race we see him fight at the sharp end of the field.

A rider who has been edging closer to the podium is Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Rene Hofer. While Hofer has performed better this season on the hard pack circuits, take Orlyonok, Matterley Basin and Turkey for example, it could be great to see the Austrian continue this into the second half of the season as he gains strength to battle with the leaders.

While Honda 114 Motorsports’ Ruben Fernandez will be keen on using the upcoming races to re-group for the second part of the season, as in most recent races he has struggled with consistent results. The Spaniard started strong in the beginning of the year and even had the red plate after the races in Great Britain but from that moment on things have failed to go his way. It would be good to see Fernandez back at the front and putting in some solid results and scoring good points.

This weekend will also see the return of F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk who will line-up for the first time since his injury. Van de Moosdijk has always been a very strong sand rider so it will be interesting to see if he’s close to 100%. Meanwhile his teammates Mathys Boisrame and Mikkel Haarup will be aiming for top results once again.

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 361 points; 2. Mattia Guadagnini (ITA, KTM), 312 p.; 3. Jago Geerts (BEL, YAM), 290 p.; 4. Jed Beaton (AUS, HUS), 266 p.; 5. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 261 p.; 6. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, HON), 251 p.; 7. Rene Hofer (AUT, KTM), 244 p.; 8. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 237 p.; 9. Tom Vialle (FRA, KTM), 227 p.; 10. Mathys Boisrame (FRA, KAW), 216 p.;

MX2 - Manufacturers Classification: 1. Yamaha, 402 points; 2. KTM, 386 p.; 3. Husqvarna, 300 p.; 4. Kawasaki, 280 p.; 5. Honda, 259 p.; 6. GASGAS, 206 p.;

KTM Expresses Sincere Thanks And Congratulations To Antonio Cairoli For A Phenomenal MX Racing Career

// Antonio Cairoli is in the running for a 10th FIM World Championship in 2021

// #222 has won 6 out of his 9 FIM World Championships on KTM machinery

// Cairoli has amassed 93 GP victories and 177 podiums to-date

// The Italian will provide his expertise in key segments within the KTM group for the future

Antonio ‘Tony’ Cairoli announced his plans at a special press conference alongside KTM management in Rome, today. The Italian will bring down the curtain on a glittering world championship career in which he has become statistically the second most decorated rider in the history of the sport and the greatest racer from his country to have thrown a leg over a motocross machine.

Importantly, Tony gave KTM a first premier class crown in 2010 (his fourth and second in MXGP). He followed the achievement with a further four titles – all with the KTM 350 SX-F – before triumphing again in 2017 with the KTM 450 SX-F. Together with Claudio de Carli and his loyal technical crew, Cairoli has been a mainstay of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team, image and development program since that first 2010 season. He has won at least one Grand Prix in all his 18 terms.

Currently, Tony is still very much in the mix for a coveted 10th FIM World Championship title. Prior to this weekend’s FIM MXGP of Sardegna (ITA), Cairoli has accrued one win and five podium finishes from the nine rounds of 2021 MXGP. He is third in the standings and only 29 points from the top of the table.

Cairoli’s contract extension with the KTM family means that the Italian will provide his expertise in various segments and potential future endeavors within the KTM group, all with the aim to continue developing the sport of Motocross for all audiences.

Tony Cairoli: “This is not an easy decision. I’ve always said that numbers and statistics did not mean that much to me. I think it was an achievement for me and my family to win one world championship so to have had a career like this is very special. I feel that it is the right time to stop. Everything around me makes it seem like the right decision, and we are still trying to win the title this year, so the motivation is high for this challenge. I want to thank all those who have helped me and supported me since I came to the world championship, and all along the way actually. There have been many faces and names and of course all the excitement and love from the fans. I have felt very much part of the KTM family from day one and we will continue our work and relationship together, but now in a different way. There is a lot more to do in life after 2021 but for now our goal is very clear.”

Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsports Director: “Our story started in an impressive way because when Tony came to KTM when we still hadn’t won a title in the premier class and we were also developing the KTM 350 SX-F, so it’s like there were two challenges to conquer! To then win five consecutive championships and establish the 350 concept was a big milestone for us. Over the years the relationship became closer and the friendship grew even more. A lot of our success both in the U.S. and in MXGP arrived because of those first years with Tony and the belief that he had in us and the vision for the future. It’s something we didn’t forget and we won’t forget.”

Robert Jonas, VP of Motorsports Offroad: “We’re immensely proud to have been such a major part of Tony’s career story and to have contributed so much to one of the best motocross racers the sport has ever seen. When we first started working together with a motorcycle that was almost a gamble for the highest level of the world championship at that time, I don’t think we could have imagined the success that would come, and just how deep Tony was able to make his impression on MXGP. He has fans all over the world and some of the biggest are right here in the factory. It will be strange not to see that orange #222 on the track next season but his passion for riding and his experience will still be big assets for us. The story doesn’t quite end here.”

The 2021 calendar is due to finish with the Grand Prix of Mantova on 10.11.2021. After this event, Tony will remain very much part of the KTM family and part of the KTM race department activities.

2021 MXGP Calendar Update

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 10 September 2021 – Infront Moto Racing would like to inform of the changes that have been applied to the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship calendar.

There have been unavoidable updates to the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship due to the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, but Infront Moto Racing together with the FIM, the FIM Europe and all the organisers have been working hard to maintain a full racing calendar for one of the most competitive seasons of MXGP.

As a results, the MXGP of Portugal that was originally scheduled to take place on the 23-24 of October and the overseas races, MXGP of Argentina, MXGP of Asia and MXGP of Bali will no longer take place this year, but they will all be postponed to 2022 and instead will be substituted by a triple-header in Pietramurata with the MXGP of Trentino (23-24 October), MXGP of Pietramurata (26-27 October) and MXGP of Garda (30-31 October) and two events in Mantova for the MXGP of Lombardia (6-7 November) and MXGP of Città di Mantova (9-10 November).

Following the success of last year’s triple GP in Trentino, there is no doubt that this season the trio of races will once again deliver some incredible racing as we draw this exciting season to a close while MXGP will return to Lombardia following the eagerly anticipated Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations to crown the Motocross World and European.

In addition, Infront Moto Racing regrets to inform that this year’s FIM-Europe Motocross of European Nations will not go ahead as originally planned and will be postponed to 2022 at a venue to be announced soon.

The 2021 edition of the MXoEN was due to take place in Riola Sardo, Italy, later this season, though the tough decision was made to push back the event by a year. Infront Moto Racing and FIM Europe look forward to a fantastic edition of the Motocross of European Nations in 2022. More info on the venue that will host the 2022 event will be shared soon.

IMR would like to thank you all for your understanding in this difficult situation as the aim is to present the most complete FIM Motocross World Championship season of racing with some incredible action of MXGP and MX2 stars who continue their battle for the title.
