Everts on Cairoli: Talking Records

With Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Antonio Cairoli entering his 19th season as a Grand Prix rider, you have to remember while the Italian is now a veteran of the sport, he is still capable of putting together GP wins, podium finishes and major points in a season. He proved it in 2020 when he finished third in the MXGP FIM Motocross World Championship and won himself three GPs.

While his body has started letting him down, we all know that Cairoli will be in amongst the major points again in 2021. Of course, the Sicilian rider is still chasing the greatest GP rider of all time Stefan Everts when it comes to most GP wins and most world titles, and we decided to ask Everts a few things about his good friend.

“He is the completely different personality to me,” Everts said. “How he takes care and handles things. For me, he has always been a fantastic ambassador for the motocross and for some riders or kids, they don’t want to spend the time with the press or media and that is sad. I think it is important and our sport is small, and we need to promote it, and take the maximum out of it.”

What impressed Everts the most about Cairoli was how organised he was in his preparation and how well he put his weekend together. Everts was also a master at being organised, but even he was surprised by the then young Italian rider.

“What I noticed, when we brought him to KTM, his game, what he had sorted it out, how he worked and dealt with everything. It took me so many more years to get to that point, but I saw Tony had that organised much earlier and for me it took a long time. When I won my fourth championship, I still didn’t have my system figured out, but the last years I had figured out the system, how to prepare, how to ride and also mentally, but Tony had that very quickly organised. That is also one of the reasons he got so many championships”.

And as for who is the greatest Grand Prix rider of all time, is it Everts, or is it Cairoli. The 10-time World Motocross Champion with 101 GP wins as always was modest in his appraisal of Cairoli.

“People forget, that is normal as we get older, but then some media comes along and writes these stories about me and reminds people. You know, to be honest I never knew I won 11 races at the Nations and I did know we won five times as a team, and we lost a couple we should have won, it could have been seven wins, but I am not so busy with the statistics anymore. I mean, who has nine, who has 10, who wins more GPs, I don’t really care that much anymore. I said it before, I have no problem if Tony also wins 10 championships. Maybe another strong kids from the future, Prado maybe stacks up championships.”

So, while the chances of an Antonio Cairoli World Championship victory in 2021 are slimmer than maybe 10 years ago, or even five years ago, nobody counts the Italian out of breaking some records in 2021, not even the man he is chasing for those records.

Catching Up with Pauls Jonass

GET THE INSIDE LINE FROM THE FORMER MX2 WORLD CHAMP AS HE LEADS GASGAS FACTORY RACING INTO THEIR SECOND SEASON OF MXGP

Fired up and 100% healthy, former MX2 World Champ Pauls Jonass is ready to lead GASGAS into the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship! Since moving up to the premier class in 2019, the Latvian has climbed onto the MXGP podium multiple times, proving that he’s just as capable on a big bike as he was on a 250. Following an injury-hit year in 2020, Pauls is well and truly back and loving life on his MC 450F. Here’s what the Standing Construct GASGAS Factory Racing rider has to say on his pre-season training, those gate prep dancing skills, and the year ahead…

Firstly Pauls, how’s your Bongo cha, cha, cha?

“Ha, it’s good thanks. Always nice to keep training fun!"

Seriously though, you seem to have your starts dialled!

“Yeah, we’ve been putting the work in. Everyone knows how important starts are. I feel good, let’s see how things go this weekend.”

How’s everything after your super-long off season? Everything suggests you’re now fighting fit, 100% healthy, and ready for round one?

“Yeah, I’m 100% healthy now. A lot of good work has been done both on and off the bike so I’m feeling good and ready to go racing. It’ll be my first race in a while, well over a year in fact, so it’s been a long time. I actually feel better than ever on the 450 right now. With the Standing Construct GASGAS team, we’ve been working really well together, and I can’t wait to start racing.”

As you said, you’ve been away from the race track for a long time. Racing is your job, but it must have been hard to keep your motivation where it needs to be?

“Fortunately, for me I’m not a rider that needs motivating. I know what needs to be done and you could say that the hard work and training comes easy to me. The hardest thing was not knowing when we were going to go racing because of a few delays in the schedule, but it’s the same situation for everyone. I have a really good base with my fitness so it was easy to alter my training to be ready for Russia.”

Going back to your Instagram post, you genuinely seem to enjoy your training. Will we see a little pre-race, gate prep’ dance in Russia this weekend?

“We’ll have to see! I just like to keep the mood light during training days, and I like to create some fun for my followers. We’re racers, but also real people at the same time. People need to be more positive and enjoy moments more, it’s fun for sure.”

So, a new team, bike, and a fresh new look for 2021! You must be buzzing about your changes for this season…

“Absolutely! A whole new look for me this season, which is exciting and for sure I’ll be aiming for some good results this year, for the team and GASGAS, as well as the team’s sponsors. I just want to repay everyone for their belief in me this season.”

Unlike some of your MXGP rivals, you opted out of competing in any pre-season races. Why was that?

“The original plan was to race some of the more ‘classic’ pre-season races, but they were cancelled unfortunately. Then with not knowing when round one of MXGP was going to be, I made the decision with the team to simply focus on MXGP and not race any smaller races. The season ends in December which is a long time from now. I have a lot of confidence in myself and my ability, so I’m not worried at all about not racing ahead of round one.”

Do you think it will take a few races to ‘shake the rust off’ before we start to see what Pauls Jonass is really capable of this year?

“I guess we will see. The goal is to put some solid results together through the opening few rounds and have a consistent start to the season. It will be important to stay healthy, then build as the season continues. Mid-season with many back-to-back races is where many points can be made up, or lost, so being strong, being there every week and being smart will be really important.”

How excited are you for your home GP in Latvia?

“My home GP is always a special one. It’s never been this early in the season so there will still be a lot of the early season excitement surrounding it, which will be nice. I missed it last season and there were three in Kegums, so to be racing in front of my home fans again will be a great feeling. I’m really looking forward to it and if I can be running up front then that will be perfect.”

Finally, we must ask, what are your expectations for 2021? Do you see yourself returning to your 2019 level, or maybe improving on that this season?

“At the moment I feel really good in myself and also on the bike. I feel better than ever so I just need to be smart and stay healthy. If I can do this, and put together strong results early in the season, then I can keep building and building and I really believe that I can improve upon my 2019 speed. I was on the podium then in my first season on a 450, so I know I can do it, and I think 2021 can be a really good season for me on the GASGAS.”

MXGP returns this weekend in Russia!

ORLYONOK (Russia) 9 June 2021 – Finally, the wait is over and the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship is set to begin this weekend in the beautiful seaside location of Orlyonok for the MXGP of Russia!

After missing out on a Grand Prix in Russia last season due to COVID-19, MXGP will return to the hilly hardpack circuit for the first time since 2019, which will also be the fourth time that the FIM Motocross World Champion will take place in Orlyonok.

Located in southern Russia, close to the Black Sea, the Orlyonok circuit first hosted a World Championship Grand Prix race back in 2017, having successfully held the FIM Motocross Junior World Championship in 2016.

Back in 2017, Clement Desalle and Pauls Jonass were the first riders in MXGP and MX2 to win at the newly introduced track, with the pair still holding the record for the most GP wins at the Russian circuit, with two victories each. Though with Desalle retired from the Motocross World Championship, this gives Tim Gajser, the winner of the Russian Grand Prix in 2019 a chance to equal the Belgian’s record – but of course with Jonass now in MXGP and back to full health, we could see the Latvian make the perfect comeback to GP racing with a third win.

Last time MXGP was held in Russia was back in 2019 that saw Gajser and Jorge Prado dominate the field with the pair winning both races to take a secure GP victory each. But with Prado moving up to the premier class last season, this now leaves the door open for a brand-new MX2 winner in Orlyonok.

In MXGP, there is no doubt that Team HRC’s Tim Gajser will look for a strong start to his 2021 campaign as he defends the MXGP title for the second consecutive year. Though he’s got quite a field of riders up for the challenge with Jeffrey Herlings of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing making his return to racing following last season’s injury, along with fellow KTM factory rider, Antonio Cairoli looking to make a good start on his 10th world title chase.

Of course, there’s also Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer who last time around finished third on the podium and was last year’s runner up in the MXGP World Championship standings. Arnaud Tonus from the new Hostletter Yamaha Racing Team will also look for another podium finish in Russia, after finishing second in 2019.

And there’s also the two rookies, Thomas Kjer Olsen of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing and Ben Watson from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing to consider, with both riders having both been on the podium in Russia before during their MX2 careers, with Olsen finishing third in 2019 and Watson on the third step as well in 2018.

You can’t forget Pauls Jonass of course who currently matches Clement Desalle’s record for the most wins at the hilly circuit, with a GP win in 2017 and 2019 while he was in MX2. A win or a podium could be the perfect comeback for the Latvian who will line-up in Russia with his new team, Standing Construct GasGas MXGP.

Additionally, we have Romain Febvre and Ivo Monticelli from Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team who will be looking to impress at the opening round this weekend. For Monticelli this will be one of his first outings with his new team, so no doubt he will be keen to put on a solid performance.

The 2021 season will also welcome a new team and manufacturer to the roster, with SDM Corse Beta Racing Team making their World Championship debut with Jeremy Van Horebeek and Jimmy Clochet.

Italian Alberto Forato of SM Action Racing Team will make his season debut in MXGP, with the GasGas rider making the decision to move up to the 450cc class during the off-season.

Unfortunately, Arminas Jasikonis of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing and Team HRC’s Mitch Evans will not line up in Orlyonok as they continue to gain their strength back after injury.

2019 MXGP of Russia Top 3:

  1. Tim Gajser                  50pts
  2. Arnaud Tonus             44pts
  3. Jeremy Seewer           36pts

Bottom Photos: 1. MXGP Start MXGP of Russia 2019; 2. Tim Gajser Russia 2019

In MX2 things are bound to be interesting with plenty of new faces make the move up the 250cc category.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle will return to defend his MX2 World Title from last season, meanwhile Jago Geerts of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing will be keen to start the season strong without repeating his mistakes of last season.

But the pair will come under new challengers, with Maxime Renaux looking like one of the main protagonists for the title this season as he joins Geerts in the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing squad. Renaux has proven that he can ride very well on hardpack circuits, so Orlyonok should be a good fit for him.

Of course, there’s also his teammate Thibault Benistant, last year’s EMX250 Champion, who will make his season debut in Russia and will be keen to make an impression, like his ride during the MXGP of Pietramurata last year where he finished third in the second race. Additionally, we have Mattia Guadagnini, EXM250 runner-up, also joining the MX2 class for 2021 as part of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team, which is a big move for the young Italian.

Others to look out for in Russia include F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Mathys Boisrame, Roan Van De Moosdijk and Mikkel Haarup, with all three possible podium contenders, especially Boisrame who has always been a strong hardpack rider and van de Moosdijk who was victorious in Orlyonok back in 2019, the same season he won the EMX250 Championship.

For Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory’s Jed Beaton the 2021 season will be his last opportunity to go for top positions in MX2, as the age rule in the 250cc category will mean he will need to move up at the end of the year. Nonetheless Beaton had some strong results in 2020 and will no doubt go for more podium positions this time around. While his young teammate Kay De Wolf will make his season debut with the ‘big boys’ in MX2 after moving up from the EMX250 class, where he often challenged for top positions.

2019 MXGP of Russia Top 3:

  1. Jorge Prado                50pts
  2. Thomas Kjer Olsen     44pts
  3. Jago Geerts                 40pts

It’s all to play for in Russia, with both classes stacked with talent! Make sure you tune in this Sunday on www.MXGP-TV.com to find out who comes out on top!

Catching Up with Isak Gifting

Since joining the DIGA Procross GASGAS Factory Racing team in September 2020, Isak Gifting did little else other than impress with some amazing results on our lightning-fast MC 250F. We might have given him a leg up into the MX2 World Championship, but the Swedish racer seized his opportunity, returning the favour with incredible speed at every round. And reaching the podium on two occasions! Now, with a full off-season of preparation under his belt, Isak’s never been better prepared to go racing. We recently caught up with one of the hottest prospects in the MX2 class ahead of the opening round of the 2021 season, enjoy!

Isak, we’re just a few days away from round one of the MX2 World Championship now. How’s it going, how are you feeling, and have you been learning any Russian?

“It’s all really good, but I’ve not learned any Russian! My preparation has been great. It’s been a long winter and then the series was delayed, but as round one got closer and closer, I’ve been feeling better and better on the bike. It’s given me time to develop the bike a little bit more and I feel mentally and physically strong. At the moment, everything is positive.”

It’s hard to believe, but this winter was your first off-season as part of not just a factory team, but of any team! What’s been the biggest benefit to you, being part of DIGA Procross GASGAS Factory Racing ahead of the 2021 season?

“It’s been a huge difference. The support, materials, the whole team, testing. It’s been a big change but one that I really needed. When I joined the team, I went racing straight away with a good set-up but not one that was developed for me. It was a great base setting, but I’ve now had time with the team to work together and get really comfortable on the bike. I also have a trainer, Joel Smets, in my corner as well, which has made my conditioning the best it can be.”

You joined the team in September 2020 and immediately put together an impressive run of results. Was joining DIGA Procross the missing part of the puzzle, that thing that allowed you to reach the next level in your career?

“I would definitely say so. I just needed that chance to join a team. When I got it, I knew that I had to work hard, keep focused, and then the results would come. The opportunity came at just the right time and I’m really thankful that I was approached by this team.”

The 2021 season is going to be long, and your first full year in the MX2 World Championship. Do you feel ready physically, will you be all guns blazing from round one?

“Being able to work with Joel has been really positive with my approach and conditioning for this season. We pushed really hard in the winter, but now it’s a case of maintaining what I have. We train in certain ways to maintain my fitness, but should I need to push a little bit harder at any time, then I will be able to.”

Your home GP in Sweden will take place in August. Do you enjoy the boost of a home crowd, or is it just another race to you?

“I’ve raced in the EMX250 class at Uddevalla and the support was amazing. I really hope that we can have fans there for my first MX2 GP in Sweden. For sure the fans give you a boost and you perform just that little but better. I really hope there is a big crowd for that one. I know that many people will come if it’s allowed. So yeah, I’m looking forward to that one the most.”

It’s still early days as far as your career goes, and we’re guessing going all-in to try and win the 2021 MX2 title is the number one goal right now. But where do you see yourself in three, maybe 10 years’ time?

“Well, for sure I’d like to win the MX2 World Championship. It’s easy to say, but I feel mentally and physically strong enough to get it done. After that, I think I can be a great MXGP class rider too. I know I’m strong, and I’ve been working on my technique a lot to be a smarter racer, which will help when I move up to the 450.”

Finally, it’s the end of the season and you’re on vacation, relaxing on a beach some place after months of bar-to-bar racing and being on the road. What will you consider to have been a ‘good season’?

“Everyone wants to be world champion, but I know that 2021 will be a learning season and I have to be realistic. It will be a building year, and I know I can develop my riding further. I proved last year that I can podium, so this gives me a lot of confidence. I’m definitely ready for the next step and I think that on the sand tracks, my ability is a little better and I can push for wins. Having said that, it’s my first full season in MX2 so there is no pressure. I just need to be consistent, be in the top 10 each race and see where we end up. I know what I can do so it’s just a case of putting it all together in each race and I think I can finish the season in a good position overall. I believe that top eight is an achievable goal for my first full season and if I can accomplish that then going into 2022 I’ll be in a really good place.”
