Mitch Evans to miss MXGP opener in Russia

Team HRC’s Mitch Evans will unfortunately have to sit-out the opening round of the 2021 MXGP season after complications with his wrist injury have meant that the Australian isn’t fully recovered enough to race at the FIM Motocross World Championship level in Orlyonok, Russia, next weekend.

It is a big shame for Evans, who has shown that when he fully fit, he can battle with the top riders in the class, posting numerous top five finishes in what was his rookie MXGP campaign in 2020. Now though, his focus is to try and get 100% healthy so that he can get back to that level and challenge for the podium spots when he returns to racing action.

Mitch Evans: “Obviously, I am really disappointed to have to miss Russia and the start of this season. I have tried my hardest to be ready but we just aren’t in a position where I feel confident I can give it my best shot and perform at the level that I expect from myself. Everyone at Team HRC has shown their support during this difficult time and it is now up to me to make sure that I am back ready to compete in the shortest timeframe possible. A big thanks to my team and all my fans around the world, and hopefully I’ll be able to see you at a racetrack soon”

Arminas Jasikonis: The Return

There will be many smiling faces when the number seven of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory rider Arminas Jasikonis is rolled out onto the starting line for first warm up. It was back at the end of September in 2020 that the Lithuanian rider crashed hard at the Grand Prix of Lombardia and was rushed to hospital in Cremona, Italy.

Jasikonis was diagnosed as having a traumatic brain injury and, as is routine procedure with injuries of this type, placed in a medically induced coma in order to stabilise his situation. The motocross World stopped as we all prayed for his recovery.

Now, some eight months later and with the 2021 FIM Motocross World Championship about to fire into life, Jasikonis is back on the bike and racing. While what happened a year ago brought the sport to its knees, the return of the giant from Husqvarna gives everyone a feeling of gratification. His team manager Antti Pyrhonen gave us some news on how Jasikonis is doing of late.

“AJ is actually really good,” Pyrhonen said. “Considering the accident, how bad it was, well since then he has recovered really well and all the steps have been positive, for weeks and months it has been going in the right direction. We are very happy and lucky, because there was no one set-back, but of course he lost a lot of base training time and last October, November and December, we started light training in January and he is doing a good job, but he still needs more time to get race ready. I think it will be soon, some easier races and built it up, maybe towards Matterley Basin or Maggiora, but it will be a process in the development and steps. We need to grow into the season and go through this process and step by step get into the GPs and racing. We need to ride him into shape.”

As for Jasikonis, firstly the number of messages and concern he had from fans and people inside the MXGP paddock made his journey to his recovery much easier and he won’t forget those who thought about him in a tough time in his life.

“I couldn’t even go through all the letters and messages,” Jasikonis said. “There were so many, and it was nice that people really wanted to take care of me. We are not there yet, where I wish to be, but we are coming. We keep on training, and we will get there sooner or later.”

When Jasikonis did return to the track, it was a very difficult situation as he not only struggled to find his speed but had to find that rhythm that is ever so important at the level the best motocross riders in the World race.

“I mean, it wasn’t easy, with so many good riders around and everything. It was a normal day of training, and the track wasn’t easy, pretty bumpy. First, I need to get back to my speed and then I need to get into my race rhythm. It isn’t going to be so easy. We have our plans to keep on working and then when I am strong enough to come back, we will decide. We are on a good way, doing some positive race practice and everything, but we just keep on working and when I feel I am strong enough, we make a comeback, we won’t come back until I can do a 30-minute race. I need to do a 30-minute race and see it is going the right way.”

Now, racing a pre-season race this weekend the world will be able to applaud once again for the tall, friendly Lithuanian who has so much to offer in the toughest sport in the world. He might not return with horns blowing and celebration, but his return in itself is a victory and no doubt when he arrives at his first GP in 2021, there will be many more to welcome his return to the MXGP paddock.

British Success in Grand Prix

While Great Britain has had a handful of World Champions over the years, their success on the world scene recently has been rather limited compared to their golden era of the 1980s and 90s.

While names from the past like two-time 500cc World Champion Jeff Smith, 1979 World 500cc Champion Graham Noyce, three-time World 500cc Champion Dave Thorpe, and former 250 and 125cc World Champions Neil Hudson and James Dobb collected World Motocross Championships for their countries, it was Dobb who won the last in 2001, some 20 years ago.

In the last decade there have been just a handful of GP winners for Great Britain, with Tommy Searle, Shaun Simpson, Max Anstie and Ben Watson winning GPs, Watson being the last with his two GP victories in the MX2 class in 2020.

Of course, one of the most successful when it came to winning GPs was Tommy Searle, who took all his Grand Prix victories in the MX2 class, a total of 14, before he left for the MXGP class in 2013. Searle might have left the Grand Prix scene now, but his contribution will always be appreciated by the always proud British public.

Max Anstie also had success in the MX2 class, winning six GPs in the 2000’s, and despite winning three races in the MXGP class, his best result on the big bike have been a third-place finish on the 450 machine. Anstie spent seven years in the MX2 class, taking 20 race wins and finishing on the podium on 14 occasions, but it was those six GP victories the reason we will always remember the red-headed Anstie.

Amazingly, the only British rider from the last decade to win in the MXGP class has been Shaun Simpson, who never won a Grand Prix in the MX2 class but has put together four Grand Prix wins on the 450. Simpson also took seven race wins in a career that showed hard work pays off. Simpson last won a Grand Prix in 2017 in the mud and rain of Indonesia; thus, it’s been a while for the likeable Scottish rider to stand atop the most prestigious podium in the world.

So that takes us to Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP rider Ben Watson, who clawed his way to victory at the back end of last year. Despite having only ever won three races in MX2, his GP victories at the Belgian GP and the Trentino GP last winter, spring-boarded his career and also scored him a factory ride in the MXGP class for 2021.

With Watson’s move to the MXGP class this year, it means a solid candidate for World Motocross Championships honours might have to wait, firstly as Watson learns to deal with the MXGP class and a young British rider can move up the rankings in MX2.

Currently Conrad Mewse is the best British rider in MX2 and with the best shot at battling the big boys of the 250 class. After finishing eight in the world last year, Mewse will hopefully make a big jump to become a serious World Championship contender.

MXGP Magazine: The Road to Maggiora

When you think back on the history of motocross many still talk about the ‘golden era’ of racing when motocross was at its peak and at the same time you can’t help but remember all of the legendary circuits of the FIM Motocross World Championship, many of which still see plenty of race action today.

No doubt somewhere at the top of the list of some of the greats like Hawkstone Park, Farleigh Castle, Namur and Bellpuig, you’d also see Maggiora. The hillside circuit based in the north of Italy is considered a crown jewel of the motocross world, having hosted numerous Grand Prix events including the famous Motocross of Nations in 1970, 1986 and 2016.

Since opening doors back in the 50’s, Maggiora has now become an adrenaline paradise, well-known for its incredible facilities, including the restaurant on the top of the hill called ‘Ristorante il Balmone’ and of course the incredible crowds that the races always attracts. In previous years, over 30,000 people have been in attendance of the races, with the 70th edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in 2016 featuring over 85,000 fans!

Now the iconic track is being revived once again, as it gears up to host the 2021 Monster Energy MXGP of Italy on the 4th of July! Read more about the legendary venue in this month’s MXGP Magazine. Check out the full feature HERE!
