Ben Watson: Making the Move to MXGP

“I promise there is nothing in life that would have given me the same level of emotion and general high than what I have experienced during my best days racing.” Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 star Ben Watson reflects on his final year racing a 250cc motorcycle in the MX2 FIM Motocross World Championship before stepping up to the 450cc and the premier class, MXGP.

“My last season in MX2 couldn’t have been weirder. The Coronavirus pandemic struck after just two rounds, which meant I had to head home with no bike for over two months”, the 23-year-old from Nottinghamshire, England, said, “It gave me a lot of time to recap and realise how much I wanted to be better. When the restart happened in Latvia, I was immediately better and then it just clicked in Lommel. I was able to ride exactly how I knew I could ride. I managed to finish the final six rounds with five podiums and two GP wins.”

Watson was one of only five MX2 Grand Prix winners in 2020, and as a result of his evident speed, skill and determination, the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 star who has reached the 23-year age limit in MX2, was rewarded with a place on the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team for 2021. “When I crossed the line to take my first ever Grand Prix victory there were too many things going through my head actually to take in during that moment. It was quite a long time after the day had ended when it really settled in that I had won a GP and that dream of standing on the top step as a kid had become a reality.”

Humble yet quietly confident, Watson will enter the premier class with positive momentum after drawing the curtains on his MX2 career with two impressive Grand Prix wins. “My first year in the 450cc class could bring some huge surprises so I don’t want to make a real solid strategy as I could easily be led down the wrong path.” He said with a sense of realism, “I want to go into the new season with an open mind and take every opportunity during the winter to be better.”

The MXGP class is the fastest and most competitive class in motocross. It will demand a different approach and another level of experience and skill. Towering at 183cm tall and weighing in at 78 kilograms, it is predicted that Watson will be better suited to the YZ450FM as opposed to the YZ250FM that he has raced for the past three seasons. “I do believe the YZ450FM will suit me and my style a lot more.” He agreed, “not many people have seen me ride the big bike, but a lot do say they think it will be better for me. I am heavy and tall for a 250, but I would say it is more about the way I ride a bike. I don’t like to be aggressive and sometimes on a 250 I do miss that aggression. I believe I will be able to make the 450 more suited to my riding style whereas with a 250 I just wanted as much power as they could give me.”

Watson can already see the advantage of having well-established MXGP riders Jeremy Seewer and Glenn Coldenhoff as Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP teammates in 2021. “Jeremy and Glenn are two of the best teammates I could ask for. I am looking forward to getting started with both the guys as they seem to be open to riding and training together and just generally helping each other improve. They were both successful in MX2 and have continued that success into MXGP, so I think they can help me with the transition to the 450 and give their opinions on what they think I should or shouldn’t do entering this new challenge. I know I will enter the new season blind having never raced most of the MXGP riders before, but that is what makes this new chapter so exciting. I am going to gain so much experience and I look forward to developing in a lot of different ways.”

hostettler Yamaha Racing enters MXGP with Arnaud Tonus and Valentin Guillod

hostettler Yamaha Racing is a newly formed team entering the FIM Motocross World Championship. It is supported by powerful partners and features excellent competitors for the world championship and the Swiss championship.

The hostettler group is one of the leading economic drivers in Central Switzerland and continues to expand its commitment to the MXGP with hostettler Yamaha Racing. The Swiss motorcycle brand iXS and the venerable watchmaking company Tissot are two other strong partners supporting the project. The operational side of the business is handled by Riding Factory GmbH with team owner Jef Janssen. The Dutch national is considered a top training authority. He is a former world championship rider and has been known in the paddock for years. All those involved are proud of the collaboration and have been hard at work for weeks for the new team.

As a Swiss company, the support of the home-based riders is important to the hostettler group and therefore three out of the four racers are from Switzerland. We are pleased to have enlisted in the MXGP class two world-class competitors, Arnaud Tonus and Valentin Guillod. Both have previously shown their potential and won various GP podium positions. While Tonus is clearly focusing on the world championship, Valentin Guillod’s sights are primarily set on the Swiss championship, in addition to the world championship events.

Petr Polak and Joel Elsener will ride the Yamaha YZ250F. Petr Polak, a Czech national, is starting his third year of GP racing and intends to continue establishing himself. The young Swiss rider Joel Elsener will compete in the EMX250 class. All four will also participate in the Swiss championship and in selected races.

Jef Janssen, team owner & manager: “We have a big job ahead of us, but we are excited about it. We have an excellent and highly motivated crew. With the hostettler group and Yamaha, we have the support of two of the most powerful partners that you could hope to have. We will start with the training shortly and I look forward to optimally prepare the team for the new season.”

Arnaud Tonus: “I’m really motivated and happy to stay with Yamaha. I have been on that bike for years now and it’s great to continue with them. Having the support from hostettler is very helpful und I’m thankful for that. It’s actually a challenge for a new team to put it all together, but we have a really good group of people and that makes the team perform well. We have a bit of time now before the season starts, let’s have a good preparation and a great season.”

MXGP of Czech Republic confirmed in Loket until 2025

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 2 December 2020 – Infront Moto Racing is excited to announce the renewal of the contract with Autoklub of the Czech Republic and Automoto Klub Loket that will foresee the MXGP of Czech Republic at the Loket circuit being part of the MXGP Calendar for the next 5 years.

In line with the current COVID-19 restrictions, a virtual signing of contract took place with Jan Šťovíček, President of the Autoclub of the Czech Republic, and the Organiser of the MXGP of Czech Republic, Zdeněk Dvorák, along with Infront Moto Racing’s COO Daniele Rizzi.

Located 150km west of Prague, the old-school hard pack circuit of Loketske Serpentiny, Loket, has been part of the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar since 1995, hosting some incredible actions over the years.

While the Czech Republic Grand Prix was missed from the 2020 calendar, due to COVID-19 pandemic, in 2019 Loket hosted some intense racing, that saw Romain Febvre claim maximum points in both races to secure the overall victory ahead of Tim Gajser and Jeremy Seewer. While in MX2, it was Jorge Prado who was victorious, with Henry Jacobi and Thomas Kjer Olsen also joining the Spaniard on the podium.

Infront Moto Racing along with the rest of the paddock are eager to return to Loket in 2021 and are delighted to have it featured on the MXGP calendar until 2025.

Infront Moto Racing’s COO Daniele Rizzi: “We are very excited to go on for a long term of five years, it is an important decision for all parties involved. I would like to thank Jan Šťovíček for all his activities behind the scenes and now in the frontline! Czech Republic is in MXGP, it is in the world of motocross because of the great efforts of all parties. Over the next five years we will make sure that the sport of motocross is developing even further in the country and this is a very important agreement that we have reached today. It has been many good years in Loket so far and it will be even more rewarding to be there with ACCR for the coming five years”.

“Relations like this, with ACCR and with a strong motorcycling club that Loket is, are the fundamentals to create a solid growth for the sport and a solid future for motocross”

Autoclub of the Czech Republic President Jan Šťovíček “This is a historical moment for us and for our country. We are singing a contract for five years . Czech fans and spectators can enjoy MXGP for five years as the most important international event in the country of the season. Thank you very much and let me state on behalf of the federation and Loket club, that we are very happy to work together with Infront Moto Racing for another five-years. I would like to thank Daniele [Rizzi] and David [Luongo] for a very smooth cooperation. Unfortunately, we were not able to hold MXGP this year, but we have a contract for five years so we can offer this spectacular event to our fans and spectators for five years”.
