MXGP Final Round heads to Shanghai

SHANGHAI (China) 12 September 2019 – The Final round of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship will conclude in the magnificent city of Shanghai for the MXGP of China for the very first time. While a new track on its own is a big challenge for MXGP and MX2 riders, the medium soft circuit is ready and excited to host its very first world class event.

The 2019 MXGP season has travelled to 18 different venues this year around the world providing hype, expectations and intense actions at each round. The 2019 Champions Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado have nothing to prove this weekend as they have already their MXGP and MX2 titles in the pockets but the battles to round up the Championships podiums are still open.

While the 2019 MXGP Championship title chase concluded with Team HRC’s Tim Gajser taking the title in Imola, the field is still open battling for other positions. However the Slovenian he’ll be lining up hoping to add the Grand Finale victory to his nine overalls, besides he only needs to add nine more points to the second placed in order to be the most dominant champion in motocross history and a return to the podium is like a must for the HRC rider this weekend after his 4th place in Turkey.

Red Bull KTM Factory's Jeffrey Herlings is back, he was the protagonist of the MXGP of Turkey being able to win his first GP of the season after recovering from couple of major injuries this year. Last weekend’s perfect performance shows the Dutchman will go into the MXGP of China and the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations as a big favourite for the overall win.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team’s Jeremy Seewer will attempt the MXGP of China with 542 point on the standings, after a bitter-sweet GP in Turkey where he was able to finish 7th, the Swiss is going to China with the speed on his side and full of expectations to return on MXGP Podium.

Standing Construct KTM team’s Glenn Coldenhoff boosted his confidence going 1-1-2 for the last three Grand Prix and you can bet he will push hard at the MXGP of China looking at the third place on the MXGP championship points while Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin currently holds down that position. Paulin, who is actually feeling awesome recently, has 499 points while Coldenhoff 488, so it will be interesting to see who comes out of that battle with the third position.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing's Pauls Jonass is also in good form and will want to perform at his best in China. The Latvian finished third overall at the MXGP of Turkey reaching his third podium of the season.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Tommy Searle was forced to withdraw from the MXGP of Turkey due to a crash during the warm up which caused him a shoulder contusion. After further examinations Searle might be back at the MXGP of China.

MXGP - World Championship Top Ten:1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 744 points; 2. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 542 p.; 3. Gautier Paulin (FRA, YAM), 499 p.; 4. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), 488 p.; 5. In the MX2 class Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado is the favourite to win this coming weekend and score his 31 GP win while the battles for the GP podium and Championship standings is still wide open.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team’sThomas Kjer Olsen is secure to finish second in the MX2 championship, but due to food poisoning sickness couldn’t race to his best level in Turkey last weekend and will want to end his season with a better result.

Third in the Championship is Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts who has lacked his usual speed in recent weeks and goes to the final round with a strong motivation to get back on the podium as he did in Turkey the past week.

Battling for the third position in the standings is Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado Tom Vialle who is just 10 points behind Geerts. You can bet he’ll push hard this weekend with good starts and confidence on his side.

F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk picked up his first ever MX2 podium last weekend in Turkey, and made a statement for being selected by Team Netherlands for the Monster Energy FIM MXoN indeed, be sure he wishes to repeat his Turkish performances this weekend.

Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen, is hoping to make its fourth podium of the season, after he missed the podium at the MXGP of Turkey only for 1 point finishing 6th tied in points with Vialle.

Another rider to watch out recently is surely Team SM Action Yamaha team’s Maxime Renaux who made his first MX2 Podium at the MXGP of Italy and arrived fourth in Turkey tied in points with Van De Moosdijk.

This weekend the MX2 class also has the third WMX classified, Larissa Papenmeier among the entries. The German is looking forward to joining this experience in China after a bitter sweet final round of WMX due to sickness.

Mike Kras is the EMX2T presented by FMF Racing Champion

AFYON (Turkey) 8 September 2019 – The MXGP of Turkey hosted the final round of the EMX2T championship presented by FMF Racing where Ecomaxx Fuels’ Mike Kras not only won the day, but was also crowned 2019 EMX Champion. The Dutchman went 3-1 for the victory and finished just one point ahead of Verde Substance KTM team’s Brad Anderson, who went 2-2 for second overall, and second in the championship. Third in the championship was Todd Kellett.

Team JK Racing Yamaha’s Manuel Iacopi who took the opening race win in the class, but could not finish the second race while in second place, still managed to finish third overall with 1-6 results.

The first EMX2T championship presented by FMF Racing race saw an early lead from Kras after being close to Anderson in the first and second corner, then Anderson went down in the second corner but was quickly into third and then moved into second, but it was Iacopi who re-passed first Anderson on lap six and then Kras on lap eight when the Dutchman stalled his bike.

Kras tried to come back, but was rattled and Anderson also moved past, and into second place. Kras faded badly in the second part of the race, but still finished third. The Italian Iacopi won his third race of the season from Anderson and Kras.

The second EMX2T championship presented by FMF Racing race was the all-important championship decider. Iacopi led from Kras and Anderson, with Dimitrios Baxeanis and Francesco Galligari in fourth and fifth. Kras moved into the lead quickly and Anderson also past Iacopi. After a lap Kras was already nearly five seconds ahead of Anderson, with Iacopi seven seconds back in third place.

As the race moved into the fifth lap Anderson started closing up on Kras and it was just two seconds behind, but Kras clocked the quickest lap of the race to stay in front. Making the championship complicated Iacopi caught Anderson and was all over the British who started struggling and lost a position to the Italian rider.

The lead by Kras was just under two seconds, but then all of a sudden just as Iacopi caught and tried to pass the leader, his bike stopped, and he ended up last. Kras held a big lead over Anderson and went on to win the race and the championship.

Mike Kras: “I just want to say this, my kids will remember me as a champion. I needed to take it easy. I could see Brad (Anderson) wasn’t catching me. I just want to take the title home and now we will celebrate. Before the race I felt good, because it isn’t the first time I go for a championship even if we arrived in Turkey tied in points. I took a good start and rode my own race.”

Brad Anderson: “Mike had some good lines, passed us both and got away from us a bit. Then I started catching, but Iacopi was close and passed me, but then his bike broke. I tried to get my head down and tried to catch Mike, but he rode very well. I am disappointed, but I wish to thank the team for getting me here.”

Herlings & Prado Victorious in Turkey

AFYON (Turkey) 8 September 2019 – The MXGP of Turkey proved to be brilliant under perfect weather conditions and in front of a large crowd as the best motocross riders in the World performed at their very best. The penultimate round of the FIM Motocross World Championship marked the 85th GP win of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, his first GP win of the season on a hard park track he fitted very well. Herlings won the MXGP of Turkey in the MXGP class with 1-1 results, while second was fellow Dutchman Standing Construct KTM team Glenn Coldenhoff with 3-2 and third Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass with 2-5.

In the MX2 class it was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who once again went 1-1 for his 30th GP win of his career, while Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha MX2’s Jago Geerts was second overall with 2-5 and third was F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk who went 5-3.

In the first MXGP race, it was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass who took his first FOX Holeshot of the season and led from Standing Construct KTM team rider Glenn Coldenhoff, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team’sJeremy Seewer and Team HRC’s Tim Gajser. Further back was Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP Arnaud Tonus, Team HRC’s Brian Bogers, Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki team rider Alessandro Lupino, JWR Yamaha Racing team’s Kevin Strijbos and Honda SR Motoblouz rider Jeremy Van Horebeek.

Herlings quickly moved into second place, and Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin entered the top ten in ninth position. Herlings took the lead as the riders entered the second lap while Gajser moved into fourth place, then went down hard and dropped well back in 14th position.

Three laps in and the lead by Herlings was two seconds from Jonass, followed by Coldenhoff. Seewer was fourth and Bogers in fifth place. While Herlings led, Jonass, Coldenhoff and Seewer were not letting the KTM rider get too far ahead with just three seconds separating the top four.

After seven laps Herlings had opened the lead up to two seconds over Jonass, and Gajser moved back into the top ten as he rounded in 10th place while Tonus moved past Bogers for fifth, and Gajser did the same to move into ninth position. Paulin and Van Horebeek also both passed Bogers.

After 10 laps the lead by Herlings was three seconds over Jonass but Herlings made a mistake and slipped over while Jonass caught right up to his back wheel.

Gajser back into seventh place as he passed both Bogers and Van Horebeek and he managed to finish in 6thposition while Paulin moved into fifth place. Jeffrey Herlings wins his second race of the season from Jonass and Coldenhoff.

The second MXGP gate dropped and Coldenhoff led from Seewer and Herlings, with Gajser in fourth and Bogers in fifth place.  Herlings was quickly past Seewer, who dropped to sixth place, and Gajser moved to third on the first lap.

Seewer crashed hard and dropped to 16thposition and after three laps it was Coldenhoff, Herlings, Gajser, Monticelli, and Bogers rounding up the top five. Standing Construct KTM team’s Ivo Monticelli passed Gajser for third place, as the World MXGP champion crashed and dropped to fifth position.

Herlings was all over the leader Coldenhoff for the lead on lap seven, as the two Dutch riders showed they are in great form for the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in three-week’s time. Bogers and Jonass had battled with Jonass moving into fifth and Bogers dropped back to sixth.

Herlings started reeling in Coldenhoff for the lead and on lap 10 they were locked together while Gajser moved into third place followed by Monticelli and Jonass. Coldenhoff continued to lead, but Herlings was hounding him, and Gajser was 23 seconds further back in third place. A few seconds before the end of the race a sensational pass was made by Herlings as he took the lead on the final lap and took the third race win of the season and the GP overall for the first time in 2019.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team's Tommy Searle after a crash during the warm up on Sunday morning wasn’t able to race this 17th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship and he was forced to withdraw from the race.

Tommy Searle posted the twelfth fastest lap in both practice sessions on Saturday and later qualified in eleventh position for the GP. But during the warm up on Sunday morning Tommy crashed and suffered a shoulder contusion which forced him to withdraws from the GP. Tommy Searle normally will be back on track next weekend in China for the final round of the 2019 championship.

Jeffrey Herlings: “It is getting better and better, in Sweden I wasn’t that prepared, but now just after three weeks on the bike, it is amazing what I can do. It has been a crazy weekend and I am super happy with my win. I had that line and I knew I had to make it perfect. I want to thank my mum the team and everyone who supported me and I wish to congratulate Glenn, he rode amazingly.”

Glenn Coldenhoff: “We are close to the end of the Championship and I really need those points as I still have a chance for third in the standings. I’m pushing hard for that. I don’t like to get passed on the last lap but it’s really amazing to see two Dutch flags on the box so I am really happy.”

Pauls Jonass: “We have been working hard with the team and it’s been a tough year, but finally I am feeling better and better and it’s nice to get back to back podiums. I made some mistakes but I feel good and look forward to the last GP in China.”

Renaux was showing an amazing speed as he started pushing Geerts for second place, he then went down, but only lost one spot as he picked himself up in third place, but soon after Vlaanderen passed him. Prado won MX2 Race 1 from Geerts and Vlaanderen.

Prado led the second MX2 race, this time from Vialle, Evans, Geerts, Van De Moodsijk, Boisrame, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Sterry and Pichon. After a lap it was Prado, Vialle, Geerts, Renaux, Van De Moosdijk, Evans, Vlaanderen, Pichon and Sterry.

Three laps in and Prado held four seconds over Vialle and Van De Moosdijk moved into third place while Geerts was back in fourth, and Renaux fifth. Vlaanderen was on the gas as he battled with Geerts and Renaux for fourth.

The lead was six seconds on lap six and the top ten was Prado, Vialle, Van De Moosdijk, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Geerts, Evans, Sterry, Forato, and Guadagini in 10th. Sterry worked his way past Evans for seventh place, and on lap nine the lead was 10 seconds.

Vlaanderen made a mistake and lost ground on Van De Moosdijk and Renaux and then he lost a place to Geerts who pushed past the South African. Prado continued to pull away from the field, and he managed to win race 1 and the MXGP of Turkey with a perfect 1-1 with Geerts and a surprising Van De Moosdijk, who claimed his first MX2 Podium rounding up the Top three.

Jorge Prado: “I’m enjoying it, and the first race was very fun while the second race was rougher but I got the start, which is the key and I want to go to the next round and get another one. I love winning GPs and hopefully we can do it again next weekend.”

Jargo Geerts: “It was a pretty good weekend, a first good race for second place and the second race I got another good start, but I wasn’t very comfortable, I finished fifth for second overall. I am happy with that.”

Roan Van De Moosdijk: “It is unbelievable, I had a strong qualifying race but the first race was tough then I battled with Adam Sterry and then crashed and finished in fifth. The second race was better and I worked my way to third, it was a long race for me, the longest in my career. I want to thank the team, my family, and Marc De Reuver.
