Coldenhoff and Prado go Pole in Turkey while Duncan is the 2019 WMX World Champion

AFYON (Turkey) 7 September 2019 – The 2019 MXGP of Turkey’s MXGP and MX2 qualifying day have wrapped up today at Afyon circuit, where great performances with full of drama and action were produced by MXGP and MX2 qualification races, not to mention the 2019 WMX World Champion has been crowned.

In the MXGP qualification race Glenn Coldenhoff from the Standing Construct KTM team led home Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team’s Jeremy Seewer third while in Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado won the MX2 qualifier with EMX250 Champion F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk finishing a magnificent second to Prado to strengthen his chances of racing for the Dutch at the Monster Energy FIM MXoN in two-week’s time, and third was Team SM Action Yamaha team’s Maxime Renaux.

Bike It DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan was crowned Women’s Motocross World Champion with victory in the today’s opening race. The New Zealander, who has been the fastest women for a few years, but continued to pick up injuries or bad luck is finally a Motocross World champion, joining fellow countrymen Shayne King and Ben Townley as World number ones. Sara Andersen finished second in the race ahead of No Fear Yamaha team’s Nancy Van De Ven.

In the EMX2T championship presented by FMF Racing it was Team JK Racing Yamaha’s Manuel Iacopi who took the opening race win in the class, but the big story is between Verde Substance KTM team’s Brad Anderson and Ecomaxx Fuels Mike Kras, Anderson finishing second and Kras third, meaning that tomorrow morning’s final race of the year will decide the championship, with Anderson just a couple of points clear of Kras.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser took the lead early in the MXGP qualification race from Standing Construct KTM Glenn Coldenhoff, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team’s Jeremy Seewer, Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki team rider Alessandro Lupino, and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings in fifth. Lupino quickly dropped back to eight as Herlings, Standing Construct KTM team’s Ivo Monticelli and Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus went past while Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin followed soon after. Paulin also moved past Tonus to go into seventh position.

After four laps it was Gajser with a three second lead over Coldenhoff, then Seewer, Herlings and Monticelli. An uneventful race followed for some laps as not a lot of passing happened in the front group.

Gajser crashed and handed the lead to Coldenhoff, and Seewer and Herlings also both passed the new MXGP champion as Herlings was all over Seewer for second place. Gajser found himself eventually back in seventh position and dropped back slowly.

Herlings looked brilliant closing on Seewer and Coldenhoff until he moved past Seewer and set out after Coldenhoff on lap eight while Gajser dropped out of the top ten as he continued to struggle.

The two Dutch riders were in a brilliant battle for the top spot as Herlings was closing right up on the back wheel of Coldenhoff. Seewer was third and Monticelli fourth. The pace of MXGP was just incredible with the two leaders colliding but continued their charge up front with only 1 second separating the Dutch riders. Coldenhoff won his first Qualifying race of the season from Herlings and Seewer.

Glenn Coldenhoff: “I had a good start and I was behind Tim, I kept focusing and in some places I was faster. Then he went down and then Herlings was pushing me. It was fun battling with him and I won, which is always good.”

Van De Moosdijk moved into second after passing Vialle. After a lap Prado held a two second lead over Van De Moosdijk, with Vialle a further second back, then came Renaux and Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha MX2’s Jago Geerts.

Bike It DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei crashed forcing himself out of the race and so does Vialle in lap five but he dropped to fifth position while Renaux moved into third place. After seven laps the lead by Prado was more than eight seconds, with Van De Moosdijk second, then Renaux, Geerts and Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen. Prado won the MX2 Qualifying race from Van De Moosijk and Renaux.

Youthstream CEO David Luongo: "On behalf of the MXGP Family I wish to welcome everybody to the MXGP of Turkey. This is a fantastic country and this venue is really amazing to host the FIM Motocross World Championship; the outstanding structures and well prepared paddock and track highlight the efforts the Organizer and the Turkish Federation put in this event and this is why everybody enjoys the MXGP of Turkey. Besides it’s a big honour for MXGP to receive the support from the Government, the Mayor and the Presidency of Turkey, it shows the rising awareness and growth of our sport here in Tureky. I wish you all a fantastic event here in Turkey during this weekend."

First of all, I would like to show our gratitude to those who have made the MXGP Motocross World series come once again to Turkey. Furthermore, when we see how passionately this event is being handled in every single detail, I am sure the future for MXGP in Turkey looks brilliant compensating all the efforts which have been made so far. Racing conditions are really good, the weather is fantastic and the riders are willing to do their best."

Turkish Motorcycling Federation President Bekir Yunus Uçar: "As Turkish Motorcycling Federation, we are proud and glad to host the Motocross World Championship in Afyonkarahisar, the ancient city of Anatolian civilizations, for the second time. We are pleased to host MXGP once again on our track, which was among the best in its first year and crowned with “The Best Infrastructure Award”.

Manager of Sport Services Mehmet Baykan: “I came to Afyonkarahisar while Afyon Sports Complex was under construction. This area is now a stunning facility, I'm very happy to see its wonderful conditions now. As Turkey, it fills us with pride to host the most important motocross championship of the world.”

Afyonkarahisar Governor Mustafa Tutulmaz: "This year the MXGP and MX2 races are joined by the WMX and EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing races and it has been such a good organization to have this event put in place. Thanks to the pubic institutions, our President, the Ministry of Sport and the Turkish Federation who gave a significant contribution”

Our track, built on an area of 250-thousand square meters, received “The Best Infrastructure Award” last year. Here we are happy to have the Motocross World Championship once again. I welcome both riders and teams to come to our city.”

Head Provincial Council of Afyonkarahisar Burhanettin Coban: “I noticed in a race in Belgium that one of the 10 most popular sports branches in the world was motocross and we started to build a world-class motocross track in our province. In 2018, we decided to host the Motocross World Championship in Afyonkarahisar and it was a great race last year. This year we will do our best to make it work even better”

F&H KAWASAKI, RACING IN GREEN

The F&H Racing Team and Kawasaki have claimed their first important title together; the Dutch squad has won the FIM European EMX250 title with Roan van de Moosdijk in only their fifth racing season.

Created five years ago by Harry Fase, the F&H Kawasaki team soon became a respected force in the GP motocross paddock; with the European title and strong performances in the MX2 World Championship they are now established as one of the main teams. “Everything started as my father dreamt of racing motocross when he was young but he never had the opportunity! My brother started riding later and my father’s dream was always to help kids so he started to sponsor several riders when his own F&H business was solidly established; then five years ago he decided to start his own team. We have advanced step-by-step, first in EMX 125, then EMX 250 and finally in the MX2 World Championship two years ago. We already had a couple of good results last year with our first GP podium and this year we have both riders in the top six and Roan van de Moosdijk claimed the European title two weeks ago so we’re very happy,” explained Harry's daughter Nathalie Fase who operates as team manager.

Team F&H has been supported by Kawasaki Europe for several years and the two parties have established a strong relationship. “Since we moved to the 250 class we have always raced Kawasaki; my father has a Green heart and when my brother was racing it was already with a Kawasaki. We develop the bike within the team so we’re sure that all our development and our ideas stay in-house. Our main goal is to battle for the MX2 title and we have shown with Henry Jacobi and Adam Sterry that our bikes are competitive with the other brands,” continued Nathalie. Lining up three riders this season and contesting all rounds of the MX2 World Championship, the team has many sponsors and partners behind them. “We have many sponsors behind us that are not familiar to motocross fans as they are partners of our company F&H Crone, which has been producing boilers for the horticultural industry for fifteen years. We try to develop a mix between these companies and the MX world and it’s working pretty well; many of these sponsors didn’t know what motocross was but they have become real enthusiasts and every year we invite them to the races and even organise a special event in Assen.”

Natalie is one of the few women working in the motocross paddock along with former Kawasaki rider Livia Lancelot. “It’s a man's world, but for me that’s not a problem as everything is very clear if you do your job. I think everybody respects me though for sure at the beginning it was a little strange because I was one of the few women to work in the sport. For me it’s not a hobby but a job and we all work as hard as we need to as a team to reach our goals; I enjoy the challenge very much. I’m pretty busy as I have another job during the week but in our family we have always been working hard as there was not much money in the house; that’s the way our dad has brought us up,” she revealed.

Next season Roan van de Moosdijk will advance to the MX2 World Championship with the team, and they have offered Roan a great opportunity to prepare for the new challenge as he will enter the final two rounds of the series this weekend in Turkey and one week later in China. “Roan is moving up with us to MX2; he already showed us what he is capable of in Portugal and it’s important for him to race these two GPs to prepare for the future and discover what an overseas event is like. He has a huge potential, and for sure it’s important for a Dutch team to have a Dutch rider racing with us as we have many Dutch sponsors.”

MXGP onto Turkey for Round 17

AFYON (Turkey) 5 September 2019 – The 17th round of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship heads to Afyonkarahisar for the MXGP of Turkey this coming weekend, before the series takes to China for the final round and while the MXGP and MX2 championships have been decided, this weekend we will find out who the EMX2T Presented by FMF Racing and the WMX champions will be. The FIM Motocross World Championship visited the hard pack circuit of Afyon last year for the first time with a great success.

WMX leader is Bike It DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan who won the last round in Imola, Italy, with 1-1 scores, she holds a 23-point lead going into Turkey. Second in the championship is Larissa Papenmeier and No Fear Yamaha team’s Nancy Van De Ven is third, both have a shot at beating the New Zealander, but it won’t be easy.

In the EMX2T presented by FMF Racing championship Verde Substance KTM team’s Brad Anderson and Ecomaxx Fuels Mike Kras are equal with 235 points each, so this final round will be exciting to say the least.

In the MXGP class, Standing Construct KTM’s Glenn Coldenhoff is going for his third straight Grand Prix victory, which is rather amazing and perfect preparation to lead into the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations at Assen at the end of September. Coldenhoff finished 7th in Tureky in 2008.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser felt very comfortable in Afyon in 2018 managing to finish second on the brand new track. It looks like the Slovenian continues his road to win GPs, despite already wrapping up his MXGP championship in Imola, so he might have something to say about Coldenhoff getting the triple treat. Gajser, who came close in Sweden for the GP win, wants to head to China for the final round with as much momentum as possible.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP's Jeremy Seewer remains second in the MXGP points standings, but without a GP win in 2019, you can be sure his goal is to stand on the top of the box in Turkey. Seewer had a decent 6th position in Afyon last year and he enters the weekend with 43 points ahead the Yamaha mate Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin who actually appreciated the Turkish tracks a lot finishing 4th in 2018 and second in the 2009 edition in Istanbul in MX2 class.

Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus has had a great season so far and will enjoy the hard surface at this round even if it’s a new challenge for the Swiss who did not attend the MXGP of Turkey in 2018.

While Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass and Arminas Jasikonis are also showing good form at the moment, so don’t be surprised if they battle up front this coming weekend. Jonass, who had his second MXGP Podium in Sweden, enjoyed the Afyon track a lot last year while he was still fighting for the MX2 title, finishing second overall in MX2.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, who was back in the Championship in Sweden, admitted how he loved the Afyon track and he showed with an impressive win in 2018. The Dutch rider might not enter the MXGP of Turkey to increase the points’ gap this year but he is still far from done fighting to give his best and win the penultimate GP of the season.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado scored his second consecutive MX2 championship at the last round in Sweden, but like Gajser, he is still motivated to add to his GP tally. The other Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Tom Vialle is coming off his first ever Grand Prix win in Sweden, and no doubt will want to stop his Spanish teammate the chance to get the win in Turkey. Prado attempted the Afyon track in 2018 finishing 6th while for Vialle this is a new challenge.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen comes to Turkey after having not his best GP in Sweden and he is certainly looking to finish on the podium after his third position last year.

Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts is currently third in the Championship 7 points ahead of Vialle and will use the penultimate and final rounds of the Championship to ensure the bronze medal while his teammate Ben Watson is forced to miss the remainder of the season due to his broken wrist.

Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen has been consistent the whole season and he won his first race of the season at the last GP in Sweden which was enough to ensure another second overall. Vlaanderen crashed hard last year in Afyon but managed to regroup and finish 10th. You can bet he will line up in Turkey with the best expectations.

F&H Racing Kawasaki’s Adam Sterry is also looking to continue his good form as a potential selection for the British MXoN team, which will be announced in this coming week and he wants his name on the team for the Assen event.

At the MXGP of Turkey Team Maddii racing riders Alberto Forato and Mattia Guadagnini will enter as wild cards. Mattia Guadagnini is the current EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing as well as the 125cc Junior Motocross World Champion while Alberto Forato finished third in the EMX250 Championship which concluded in Sweden.
