2018 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations is Ready for RedBud

REDBUD (Michigan, USA) 03 October 2018 - The 2018 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations is upon us at “America’s Motocross Track” RedBud! Perhaps the most patriotic track in the country, located in Buchanan, Michigan, will host the 72nd Edition of the single biggest motocross event of the year where countries from around the world will converge this weekend.

A sea of thousands upon thousands of motocross fans will also invade the now tranquil hillsides of the circuit to see the highest competition levels in years with nearly every top rider in the world racing. Each country will have 3 talented riders representing their nation in a fight for glory and pride.

Among the 31 teams represented will be arguably the strongest American team in years managed by motocross legend Roger Decoster and led in MXGP by American motocross and supercross Champion Eli Tomac on his Monster Energy Kawasaki with 2018 250 American supercross and motocross champion Aaron Plessinger in MX2. Joining the pair of top American riders is Monster Energy Yamaha Factory racing’s Justin Barcia, a 4-time team USA rider. Tomac is a three-time member of the team and a multitime champion in the US while Plessinger will join the team in his first MXoN appearance. Team USA is the winningest team in history with 22 Motocross of Nations victories but the home team’s last win came in 2011 and this weekend riders nor fans will accept anything short of a victory.

The top spot will however be heavily contested this weekend!

Team Netherlands is one of the favourites with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s 2018 FIM Motocross World Champion Jeffrey Herlings who will be pushing to prove he is indeed the fastest rider in the world. Herlings is backed up by fellow Red Bull KTM rider Glenn Coldenhoff in the Open class and Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen in the MX2 division. The Dutch team took 2nd the past two runnings of the event but the momentum of Herlings and his amazing season could push the team to new heights.

Team France will again return as the defending champions after hoisting the Chamberlain trophy the past 4 consecutive years. The country has competed in the event since 1947 and accomplished 15 podiums and 5 wins along the way. MXGP will contested by the veteran Motocross of Nations rider, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin, with Dylan Ferrandis in MX2 and former MX2 World Champion Jordi Tixier in the Open Category after a crash took the originally selected Romain Febvre out of the competition.

The German team will see the return of Team HRC’s Ken Roczen in MXGP and TM Racing Factory Team’s Max Nagl in Open who won the event in 2012 at Lommel with Roczen last participating at Teutschenthal in 2013. Adding to the talent of the 450 riders is STC Racing Husqvarna’s Henry Jacobi in MX2. Roczen is a well known name and a favorite of many who is also MX2 FIM Motocross World Champion, a former AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross.

Team Belgium adds even more competition to the podium fight with Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle, Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts, and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Jeremy Van Horebeek taking the up the opportunity to represent their country.

Not to forget is the British team of Tommy Searle, Ben Watson, and Max Anstie. Searle and Anstie were both part of last year’s second overall team but Watson will make his debut just after finishing up the strongest MX2 season of his career.

Other notable contenders include team Italy and team Spain. Italy will be lead by the 9-time World Champion and 2018 MXGP vice-champion Antonio Cairoli from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing with Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki Racing’s Alessandro Lupino in Open and Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori’s Michele Cervellin in MX2. Spain will feature the new MX2 FIM Motocross World Champion Jorge Prado from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing plus Marchetti Racing Team KTM’s MXGP veteran Jose Butron and former MX3 World Champion Carlos Campano.

Also noteworthy is Team Australia and Team Puerto Rico, Australia will have last year’s MX2 overall champion Hunter Lawrence along with KTM Racing Team’s Kirk Gibbs riding in MXGP and Mitch Evans in the Open class while former top rider Micheal Byrne will serve as the team manager. The Puerto Rican team will be followed by many as Travis Pastrana makes a return to racing along with the previously retired Kevin Windham and former factory AMA Motocross/Supercross rider Ryan Sipes. With the main goal of raising funds for the hurricane victims in Puerto Rico the team are still racers at heart and will surely come out swinging this weekend led by Ricky Johnson as the team coach.

Monster Energy FIM MXoN – Riders Talk

Going into this weekend’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, three teams are among others the favourites to get on the podium, defending champions Team France, Team USA and Team The Netherlands. As we have seen in the past, anything can and probably will happen, and that is what makes this event so exciting.

Dutch captain, Jeffrey Herlings has had close to a perfect season, and he wants to go to Redbud, and capture the honour of the fastest man on the planet. He will have to beat American 450 champion Eli Tomac, something he did in 2017, but a new year, means a new goal.

“You know,” Herlings said. “The most beautiful way to finish off the season is to go 1-1 at the Nations. If I can accomplish that, that will be the cherry on the cake. It would be great and I am super motivated to race those guys, Tomac, Roczen, Barcia, Plessinger, racing the main guys. Racing the Americans on their home turf, they are fast and it isn’t going to be easy, but we will see.”

Justin Barcia from Team USA feels that finally he has a chance to help his country to a victory at the MXoN. Having ridden in 2012, 2013 and 2015, he can’t wait to line-up against the Grand Prix riders and show them how fast he is on home soul.

“It is a good vibe,” Barcia said. “Me, Aaron, and Eli were like, “We want to win.” Aaron won the championship this year and Eli won the championship this year, so obviously they’re great picks. There were a lot of other guys they could have picked, but I think that with my turnaround this year and my never-give-up mentality and the fact that I’ve done well at the Motocross des Nations, I think it’s a really solid team, and me, Eli, and Aaron get along fine. There is no tension and there are no issues. With the past teams I’ve rode on, there has been a little bit of a weird feeling. This year, I don’t know, it just feels good. I’ve been on the team three times and this will be my fourth time, and for some reason it just feels different this time. It just feels like everything is falling into place, and it feels right. Maybe it’s because we’re on home soil. I don’t really care what it is as long as it feels good. It feels like it is really good right now, and that’s what I’m stoked about.”

While the Dutch and the Americans will reply on their big guns to make the podium at Redbud, it will be former GP rider, Dylan Ferrandis who will try and duplicate the French victory in 2014, when he rode in the MX2 class. Ferrandis knows that the 250cc class is important and that rider can help win it or lose it for the team.

“The Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations is really a fun event and is something I would not want to miss. I can’t wait for RedBud. Definitely. For sure. I don’t really know where we are in comparison to the guys in the world championship. I don’t know if we are much better or not. I think on Saturday during the 250 class race I’ll be able to compare my speed with the riders from the GPs. I mean my opinion is that the Yamaha bike that Aaron and I have are definitely the best 250 bikes in the world. I think we’re going to have some help with that, but we’ll see. Maybe the GP guys are much stronger than we think.”

So now all will head to Redbud, and all will be trying to do their best to help their nation win in the biggest, and most important motocross race of the season. Herlings, Barcia and Ferrandis know that it might not be about personal goals but trying to work together and make something special happen.

Kevin Brumann Wins YZ125 bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup SuperFinale

IMOLA (Italy) 1 October 2018 – The weekend of 29th and 30th September, the Imola circuit hosted the 2018 FIM Motocross World Championship, the last round of the WMX and EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing plus the YZ125 bLU cRU Cup SuperFinale

Wrapping up a perfect weekend with victory in race two, young Swiss rider Kevin Brumann is the 2018 YZ125 bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup SuperFinale overall winner. Claiming the runner-up spot in race two Great Britain's Joel Rizzi secured second overall, with Denmark's Magnus Smith earning the third spot on the final podium.

Kicking off the race action at the Imola motocross circuit on Sunday, the second and last race of this year's SuperFinale saw YZ125-powered youngsters continue their quest for an invitation to Yamaha's bLU cRU Masterclass. With race officials working overnight to create the ideal track conditions, the Yamaha riders were faced with slick and challenging conditions on Sunday morning.

With 39 young racers storming out of the starting gate aboard their GYTR-kitted Yamaha machines, it was Great Britain's Joel Rizzi who took the holeshot in the second race. Leading the way through the first few corners, the young Brit was then passed by Brumann right before the end of the opening lap.

The two youngsters Brumann and Rizzi were involved in a close battle, which lasted for a number of laps and eventually saw the Swiss rider Brumann open a small gap at the front of the pack. With Brumann getting the victory, Rizzi crossed the line eight seconds behind the winner to claim the runner-up position. Third in race two was Michele Pablo D'Aniello, with the young Italian winning a three-way fight with Magnus Smith [fourth] and Vincent Marti [fifth].

The double race victory brought Kevin Brumann to the top step of the podium at the YZ125 bLU cRU Cup SuperFinale. "It feels great to win both races," admitted the 14-year-old Swiss competitor. "I am just so happy for this victory. We had two tough races and I did the best I could from start to finish. Every rider had been giving their best and it really means a lot to get both moto victories during the weekend at Imola."

Securing his spot at the upcoming bLU cRU Masterclass, SuperFinale podium finishers Joel Rizzi and Magnus Smith have also earned an invitation to Yamaha's unique annual event. Following their strong performances at the SuperFinale, also selected to attend the bLU cRU Masterclass are wild-card riders Liam Hanstrom and Simon Depoers.

All five of the aspiring, young talents who made the final selection will attend the bLU cRU Masterclass - a three-day event supervised by highly-acclaimed Yamaha ambassadors. Yamaha's Arnaud Tonus and Kiara Fontanesi have already confirmed their participation at the 2018 edition of the event.

Designed to inspire and educate young motocross riders, the 2018 bLU cRU Masterclass will also determine the 2018 YZ125 bLU cRU Cup winner. Automatically securing a place on the MJC Yamaha Official EMX125 Team, the winner will be able to race a GYTR-kitted YZ125 machine in the 2019 EMX125 Championship.

MXGP Family Remembers Superfan Adrian Mahoney

This week the MXGP Family learned of the loss of motocross superfan and former British rider Adrian Mahoney. Mahoney suffered a severe injury of the spine in a crash during a local amateur race in 1988 and was paralyzed from the neck down as a result of the incident. Initially confined to a wheelchair subsequent medical complications required him lay flat in bed at all times.

A massive collector of memorabilia with rider’s jerseys and much more he filled his room. A fan of his native British GP and many racers Honda’s Tim Gajser was a favorite. On June 17th, 2016 Adrian attended the MXGP of Great Britain in Matterley Basin Gajser proudly ran the sticker 'Mahoney 73’ throughout the weekend among many other riders who proudly displayed his sticker on their front plates in both the MXGP and MX2 classes.

An inspiration to many, Mahoney’s memory and dedication to the sport we all love will not be forgotten. Rest and Ride in Peace Adrian from all of us at MXGP.

2018 Champions Herlings and Prado End Season With Italian Wins

IMOLA (Italy) 30 September 2018 - The Italian circuit of Imola has hosted another historic weekend of racing with the final round of the 2018 MXGP FIM Motocross World Championship. The weekend was a finale to 20 rounds of racing around the world over 8 months and today the 2018 Champions from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, Jeffrey Herlings and Jorge Prado, capped of the year with another pair of dominant wins.

Imola’s Autodromo Enzo & Dino Ferrari track was the venue of choice with over 25,000 cubic meters of dirt added to the natural elevation of the circuit for the weekend. The historic venue was the first in Italy to host Motocross International racing in 1948 and now on the 70th anniversary has seen the conclusion of one of the most competitive World Championship seasons ever. Taking the 3 spots in the final MXGP championship standings were the only three riders to win a GP in 2018, Jeffrey Herlings, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, and Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle. Meanwhile in the MX2 standings Jorge Prado, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass, and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen finalized the top three spots.

The new MXGP World Champion, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, had nothing to prove this weekend but still came out and dominated with double race wins to take the final MXGP overall of the year.

The first MXGP race was started with a season first Fox Holeshot from Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki’s Alessandro Lupino in front of his home crowd as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli opted out of racing to recover for next week’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations.

Behind Lupino was Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP Team’s Jeremy Seewer, and then Herlings. Seewer and Herlings banged bars in the 4th corner was put the Dutchman up to third. Gajser took the lead from Lupino before the end of the first lap along with Herlings.

Lupino was then third but a collision with Seewer dropped the #77 out of the top 20 and the Swiss rider to 10th. Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle took over third with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin 4th and Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Shaun Simpson 5th.

On the third official lap Herlings took the lead from Gajser and a lap later Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Julien Lieber went to 5th past Simpson. In the remaining 16 laps the top 5 held their positions. Herlings had the race win ahead of Gajser, Desalle, Paulin, and Lieber while Seewer made a last lap pass to get by teammate Simpson for 6th.

Race 2’s Fox Holeshot belonged to Herlings who had Gajser and Desalle just behind him. Simpson had another good start in 4th with Lieber again behind him. Paulin was in 6th and had to deal with pressure from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Jeremy Van Horebeek.

After 4 laps of heat from the Belgian Paulin lost 6th and Van Horebeek then went after Lieber. With 5 laps to go Lieber moved past Simpson for 4th and Van Horebeek put the Wilvo rider another spot back to 6th.

Herlings took the race win with Gajser again 2nd then Desalle, Lieber, and Van Horebeek. Paulin took 6th after passing Simpson with 2 laps to go. In the overall Herlings was the clear winner for the 84 time in his career as Gajser took 2nd and Desalle took third.

Jeffrey Herlings, "It is a great way to finish of the year, to finish with a win. I am very happy and thankful, it has been a great journey, a great experience, a great year, and I have met a lot of great people. I really want to thank especially my team as without them I wouldn't to be able to do what I did... it is something that will be hard to ever accomplish again. The most beautiful way to finish off the year is to go 1-1 at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations and if I can accomplish that it will be the cherry on top!"

Antonio Cairoli: "I am really happy to be here, it is such a great place for racing and I think this is a great way to step up our sport. I am looking at the bigger picture of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations next week, it is very important for me and the country of Italy. Like I have said congratulations to Jeffrey and thanks to Youthstream for another good and very intense championship. They have stepped it up with a more professional staff so I am really happy to have another 2 seasons and follow my dream to fight for another world title."

Clement Desalle: “Finishing third in the championship is really great, also it is a great feeling to be on the box at the end of the championship. My whole team works to be the best possible and to beat those guys and have the best result in the GPs. It is not easy but we are very motivated... it was a very good season overall."

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado came into this weekend already knowing he was going to be crowned 2018 MX2 FIM Motocross World Champion but it didn’t stop the 17-year old from taking his 26th Fox Holeshot of the year.

Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Team’s Ben Watson was a top qualifier yesterday but jumped the gate to early today and was back outside the top 15 on the start. Prado lost his lead to Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori’s Simone Furlotti in the first corners and went back to 6th.

Honda 114 Motorsports Hunter Lawrence was third behind Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington but pushed the American off the track to take second.

Covington rejoined the track in 4th behind Prado while Lawrence went on to take the lead from Furlotti who then dropped another spot to Prado. The following lap Covington was up to third but lost the spot 2 laps later to his teammate Thomas Kjer Olsen.

STC Racing Husqvarna’s Henry Jacobi was impressive along with Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori’s Michele Cervellin. Jacobi came from 9th on the first lap all the way up to 3rd after a bike issue ended the race for the leader Lawrence.

Prado took over first after the misfortune of Lawrence and held the lead to the finish where he was met by the Red Bull KTM crew and media to celebrate his 2018 MX2 World title. Olsen took 2nd and Jacobi 3rd while Cervellin made it up to 4th ahead of F&H Racing Team’s Marshal Weltin.

Race 2 started with a 5th Fox Holeshot of the year for Thomas Covington ahead of ASTES4-TESAR Yamaha’s Samuele Bernardini and JD Gunnex KTM Racing’s Richard Sikyna from Slovakia.

Prado was up into 2nd quickly while Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 Team’s Anthony Rodriguez held 4th ahead of Olsen but the #19 fell and handed 5th to BUD Racing Monster Energy’s Brian Moreau in his first MX2 appearance.

Prado then went for the lead and took the spot from Covington as his teammate Olsen took 5th back from Moreau. Olsen was pushed back out of the top 5 on the next lap by Lawrence.

The Aussie was on a roll and took positions away from Rodriguez, Bernardini, and Covington in the following laps. Lawrence gained multiple seconds on Prado in each of the final laps but it was a little too late as the Spaniard took the race victory and his 12 overall win of the season. Lawrence finished second with Covington third and Olsen 4th but in the overall it was Prado, Olsen, and Covington taking the podium.

Jorge Prado’s season has been nothing short of impressive, the 17-year old becomes the first Spanish MX2 World Champion via 10 pole positions, 331 laps in the lead, 17 individual race wins, 12 overall victories and 17 podiums. Prado scored 873 points in 20 rounds of racing averaging 43.6 points per race of the maximum 50. Prado becomes one of only 3 riders to win the title at such a young age joining Ken Roczen and Jeffrey Herlings and is also now tied for 3 most career MX2 Overall wins with Tyla Rattray behind Herlings and Antonio Cairoli."

Jorge Prado: "I knew I was World Champion already on Thursday so it was a great moment that I didn't expect. It was a great weekend and I am really happy to finish off the season with a win."

Thomas Kjer Olsen: "I am really happy to finish third of course, I would like to be closer to Prado and Jonass but I did everything that I could this season. There was a lot of positives this season and there are a lot of things I have learned. I am super happy with my 10 podiums and I don't think I can be anything other than happy."
