SANDY SUCCESS ON SATURDAY FOR LUCAS COENEN AND DE WOLF AT THE MXGP OF FLANDERS!

LOMMEL (Flanders, Belgium) 2nd August 2025 – The deepest of deep sand tracks awaited the MXGP elite today for the first day of action at the MXGP of Flanders, as rain intermittently lashed the already soft circuit to leave seriously heavy conditions for the Qualifying Races, and the MXGP and MX2 World Championship battles continued in front of packed spectator banks all around the circuit of Lommel!

It was delight for the home fans who had come to see their star man Lucas Coenen take victory, which he did with multiple passes to earn his sixth Qualifying Race victory of the year for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing!  Championship leader Romain Febvre also had to charge through the pack to take second place and keep the red plate on his Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP machine, while Calvin Vlaanderen made use of his sand prowess with a solid third for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP.

The clear favourite in MX2 delivered this time, as Kay de Wolf scored his third Saturday win of the season for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.  Fellow Championship challenger Andrea Adamo worked hard to take second for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, ahead of Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s sand lover Camden McLellan, who had his best Qualifying Race result of the season in third!

The first taste of the sand is never the deepest at Lommel, and with brighter weather likely to add to the physical punishment, the GP races tomorrow will see only the fittest and the best sand riders prevail!

Febvre was looking strong and controlled with the fastest time in morning Free Practice, although on his return from injury, Jeffrey Herlings claimed second best time for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing with a late run, with Fantic Factory Racing MXGP rider Glenn Coldenhoff in third.

Coldenhoff’s teammate Brian Bogers took that third position in Time Practice, however, with Coenen taking the first gate pick for the Qualifying Race, just a quarter of a second ahead of Herlings.

With a special livery to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the brand, Isak Gifting put his smart-looking JK Racing Yamaha into the early lead with a stunning Holeshot, his first in any race this year, with the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP teammates Calvin Vlaanderen and Jago Geerts running in second and third ahead of the factory Fantic pairing of Coldenhoff and Bogers!

Of the pre-race favourites, Coenen was initially seventh into the third corner, with Febvre tenth and Herlings eleventh! Coldenhoff and Geerts went back and forth on the first lap for third, when suddenly Coenen was amongst them, picking his way past Bogers for fifth on the last corner before the end of the first full lap.

Febvre was also making passes, staying two places back from Coenen until half-distance, by which time they were third and fourth and chasing down the leading Yamaha men, with Gifting still ahead of Vlaanderen.  The South-African born Dutchman nearly made the move past the Swede after holding back the Belgian teenager, who had a big moment through the wooded section of the track that nearly saw him over the handlebars!

Further back, there was a stunning ride in progress from Norwegian Hakon Fredriksen, who lifted his YRC High Performance Yamaha past factory man Maxime Renaux for the final point in tenth with three laps to go, finishing just 2.5 seconds down on the returning Herlings!  After a crash from Bogers saw him tumble down the order, Andrea Bonacorsi was the second Fantic Factory Racing MXGP rider in the top ten, claiming a steady eighth at the flag.

Geerts and Coldenhoff continued their duel throughout the race, and the Dutchman made the decisive move on lap eight to take fifth ahead of the Yamaha man, while the JM Racing Honda of Brent van Doninck scored a solid seventh place for the second Qualifying Race in a row!

On lap seven, Coenen finally made the breakthrough, scrubbing the Finish Line jump brilliantly to make an inside pass on Vlaanderen, and as Gifting ran slightly wide halfway through the lap, the home hero pounced to leap past the gallant Swedish Viking and take the lead!  Just three corners later Vlaanderen also made it past the white Yamaha, who in turn succumbed to the charging Febvre over the wall jump by Pit Lane!  Isak was able to hold on to fourth at the finish, however, to record his best ever Qualifying Race result in MXGP!

Febvre took two further laps to catch and pass Vlaanderen for second place and reeled in Coenen a little in the closing stages, but the KTM man celebrated his sixth Saturday success in the premier class to edge closer to his title rival in the Championship!

The gap between the series leaders is now just nine points, but with both of them being evenly matched around the arduous Belgian sand pit, tomorrow’s Grand Prix races could see either of them emerge with the red plate for the next round!

Lucas Coenen: "I was a bit sick yesterday and didn’t sleep much, so it was tough early on. I tried to save energy in the races, kept it safe at the start, and then pushed when I needed to. I controlled it from there and saved some energy for tomorrow. The track is already rough and the fans are hyped, so I’m looking forward to tomorrow."

De Wolf was immediately fast in the morning’s Free Practice session, but only just got fastest time by less than half a tenth from Mathis Valin, who looked at home in the sand for Kawasaki Racing Team MX2. Sacha Coenen was typically on full throttle more often than not for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing as he took third fastest time, and the young Belgian was again on the gas for Time Practice, holding the top spot until the very end of the session, as De Wolf grabbed the first gate pick by a third of a second from his teenage rival!  Valin was again impressive but a second back from De Wolf in third spot. Series leader Simon Längenfelder was fourth for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, ahead of Rick Elzinga in his first race back from injury for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2.

A fired-up Coenen, without a Holeshot of any kind at the last GP, got back to his usual practice by firing into the lead and streaking away from the pack, his initial laps a full four seconds faster than his pursuers, who on the opening lap were Adamo, the JM Racing Honda of David Braceras, and the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team leader Thibault Benistant.  De Wolf exited the tight second corner in fifth but was third by the end of the first full lap after a sweet move on Benistant.

Längenfelder looked unhurried but got up to sixth past Braceras on lap two, with Elzinga eighth in front of Valin.  Jens Walvoort and his BTS Racing KTM was in a battle with Monster Energy Triumph Racing’s Guillem Farres at the edge of the top ten.

On lap four, De Wolf made a forceful inside move on Adamo for second, with Coenen ten seconds clear by this time.  Both McLellan and Längenfelder had passed Benistant as he slipped down to sixth, with Valin up to seventh.  The reigning Champ guessed that a mistake from Sacha might be coming, and the young Belgian, who still has yet to win a Qualifying Race in his career, tipped over heading into the wooded section and lost a bunch of time, remounting in sight of De Wolf!

Just half a lap later and Coenen ran off the track after another big moment, and the Dutchman inherited the lead that he was never to lose.  Coenen was to crash three more times during the race but at least he had soft landings, amazingly salvaging seventh by the finish! Elzinga battled hard to take eighth ahead of Braceras and Walvoort.

Valin took sixth at the flag after the last of Coenen’s crashes, but at the front of the field De Wolf was imperious, winning by 4.8 seconds from Adamo, while McLellan won a heads-up battle with Längenfelder for third, as Benistant came home a distant fifth.

After the end of the race, Andrea Adamo received a penalty for not respecting waved yellow flag and was therefore penalised by five points in the championship.  He keeps his second gate pick for tomorrow’s races, but the Italian now sits 50 points behind Längenfelder in the Championship and has De Wolf just six points behind him!

It’s unusual for there to be a clear favourite for tomorrow’s MX2 races, but then we were also saying this last weekend! Nothing is ever certain on an MXGP Sunday in the deep sands of Lommel, so don’t miss this one tomorrow!

Kay de Wolf: "I was struggling a little bit, so they can expect more from me tomorrow. I waited for Sacha’s (Coenen) mistake, which came earlier than I expected, and then I took the lead. It turned out to be an easy qualifying race, and I saved a lot of energy for tomorrow, so I’m ready."

MXGP OF FLANDERS WORLDWIDE TV COVERAGE & TELENET-PLAY SPORTS EXTENSION DEAL AHEAD OF LOMMEL

LOMMEL (Belgium) 2nd August 2025 – The 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship heads west to northern Belgium as the MXGP of Flanders welcomes the MXGP elite to the deep sands of the Stedelijk Motorcrosscentrum circuit on the outskirts of Lommel. Known as one of the toughest tracks in the world thanks to its relentless sandy waves and ever-shifting surface, Lommel promises an intense and unpredictable weekend of racing.

On track, MXGP World Championship leader Romain Febvre is being hunted down by teenage sensation Lucas Coenen, who will make his home debut in the premier class just ten points away from the series lead. Febvre has won two of the last four GPs held here, so the Frenchman will be a formidable opponent despite the partisan Belgian crowd cheering for their young hero. Adding to the drama, Jeffrey Herlings – one of only two riders to have won four GPs at Lommel – makes his surprise return from a collarbone injury to line up in Flanders.

In MX2, three riders remain locked in a tight Championship fight as the season enters its final phase. Current points leader Simon Längenfelder has climbed the Lommel podium in each of the last two years, but reigning Champion Kay de Wolf – last year’s winner here – is eager to reclaim points on his favored sand surface. Meanwhile, Italian former Champion Andrea Adamo has proven to be a dangerous threat in the deep sand, adding even more intrigue to the battle.

The MXGP of Flanders will also host the deciding round of the EMX125 European Championship Presented by FMF Racing, where Italian Nicolò Alvisi holds a narrow six-point lead over French prodigy Mano Faure in what promises to be a thrilling finale.

Off the track, Infront Moto Racing is pleased to announce the extension of its long-standing partnership with Telenet and its Play Sports channels, securing live coverage of the FIM Motocross World Championship for another five years (2026–2030). This agreement ensures Belgian fans can continue to enjoy every MXGP race and the acclaimed Behind The Gate series through Play Sports’ premium sports offering, which reaches over 1.4 million households and includes rights to the Premier League, Formula 1, ATP & WTA tennis, Bundesliga, and more.

David Luongo, Infront Moto Racing CEO: “This renewal underlines the strength of our collaboration with Telenet and Play Sports. Belgium has always been one of the most important countries for motocross, with legendary riders and a passionate fan base. Having MXGP available on Play Sports for another five years means we can continue to bring all the excitement of this amazing sport to millions of fans in Belgium. We are proud to be part of Play Sports’ premium sports portfolio and to continue growing the passion for motocross together.”

Vincent Stevens, VP Entertainment at Telenet: “We are delighted to bring the MXGP to our customers for another five years. This partnership has always been important to Play Sports, as it is a traditionally well-loved sport in Flanders. With a long-standing tradition of Belgian riders and a bright future ahead, this is the right move to service our loyal and appreciative customer base. MXGP deserves its spot in Play Sports’ rich portfolio of premium sports rights. As such, Play Sports continues to be the ‘Home of Motorsports’.”

Fans can catch all the action live and on-demand through the extensive list of global broadcasters and on MXGP-TV.com, which will stream every race, plus Saturday’s Time Practice sessions, along with the 26-minute Behind The Gate magazine show featuring the best race moments, exclusive interviews, and behind-the-scenes stories.

DAVID LUONGO EDITORIAL | MXGP MAG #140

Dear MXGP Fans,

We are already entering the last part of the season with six Grand Prix and the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations and we can feel that all the championships are getting more and more disputed!

The last events that took place in UK, Finland and Czech Republic have been very exciting in both MXGP and MX2. The fight on top of the MXGP classification between Romain Febvre and Lucas Coenen has intensified and after the victory of the young Belgian in Loket the gap reduced to 10 points only. It was also great to see Glenn Coldenhoff performing so well on the Fantic factory and establishing his third overall position on the classification while Calvin Vlanderen scored his first podium of the season in the sand of Finland.

In MX2, the fight will turn most probably to a trio of great riders with Simon Längenfelder leading the championship with 47 points in front of Andrea Adamo and 59 in front of Kay De Wolf. The MX2 races have been really open since the beginning of the season, showing a fantastic generation of talented riders that we will be see soon in MXGP category. The rookie Valin secured his first podium in MX2 at the occasion of Loket and added his name to the long list of podium awarded riders in this category this year.

Kymi Ring was a new venue on this season calendar and the level of organization was very good. It was a great combination of the great infrastructure that a World class road race circuit could offer with a very typical Finnish motocross track on the natural terrain surrounding the road race circuit. The finish fans answered the call and welcomed very positively the comeback of MXGP in their country. During this Grand Prix, we announced the prolongation of our collaboration with Kegums – Latvia to bring the MXGP to the Baltic country until 2029. We also announced the 2027 Junior World Championship which will take place in Estonia, proving the great dynamic of our sport in this part of Europe.

The Junior World Championship took place in France this year and again it reached new standards in term of organization and sport level. For the very first time, this event has been televised and broadcasted live on MXGP-TV and some National Channel, in France L’Equipe for example. Despite the rain that didn’t help the organizer and the riders, the races were very exciting and crowned France as Nations Winner with two victories in 85cc with Rafael Mennillo and 125cc with Mano Faure. In 65cc, Kannon Zabojnik brought the World Title to United States. Those three names will for sure continue to make noise in the years to come.

The Monster Energy Motocross of Nations is getting closer as well and promises to be one of the most epic of the last years. Team Australia just announced their line up and they will defend their title with the same squad as last year in UK. Jett and Hunter Lawrence will be joined by Kyle Webster to defend their title on American soil. More teams will announce their line up in the upcoming weeks.

Finally our official YouTube Channel just reached 600.000 subscribers, a fantastic milestone for MXGP. It is mainly thanks to the very popular Behind The Gate, our 26 minutes program who reached more than 3 millions views during the 2025 season up to now, one of the greatest and most following Off-Road program in the world.

Now it is the time to prepare yourself for the most demanding and awaited Grand Prix of the season, Lommel is calling for the MXGP of Belgium and you can be sure that it will mark again a turning point in the season. In MXGP and MX2 class but it will also be the finale of the EMX125cc where Mano Faure, the freshly crowned 125cc Junior World Champion is sitting only six points back of the Italian talent, Nicolo Alvisi. It will for sure be exciting and emotional.

See you in Lommel.

HERLINGS BACK IN THE MXGP GATE FOR GRAND PRIX OF FLANDERS THIS WEEKEND

Jeffrey Herlings has recovered sufficiently from a broken right collarbone to return to MXGP action this weekend in the deep sand of Lommel.

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider steered his KTM 450 SX-F through a training session in the Netherlands yesterday (Thursday) and felt fit and happy enough to confirm his attendance this weekend in Limburg, Belgium.

The 30-year-old Dutchman won in Lommel in 2024 and his ability and speed in the sand is world renowned. Herlings was victorious in Germany and Latvia this season (from the nine rounds he has contested) before missing events in Finland and Czechia due to the collarbone injury sustained while training and has been almost a full month in a natural recovery and rehab process.

Joel Smets, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager: “Jeffrey went riding today and felt good and strong enough to enter the GP this weekend in Lommel. We’re happy to have him back but we have to be realistic about what to expect. Jeffrey is the sandmaster but has still missed two races and will have to build-up his feeling again. The team have had some fantastic results recently and we’re focused on both MXGP and MX2 titles. With the #84 also in the gate then we know we can continue to set the pace.”

AMA HALL OF FAMER ROGER DE COSTER RETIRES AS MOTOCROSS OF NATIONS TEAM USA MANAGER

PICKERINGTON (Ohio) 31st July 2025 — AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend Roger De Coster has retired as the manager of the U.S. Motocross of Nations team, capping a 44-year career during which he guided U.S. riders to 25 titles at the annual Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme World Championship event.

“Roger De Coster’s impact on Motocross in America is indelible and without compare,” said AMA President and CEO Rob Dingman. “On behalf of the AMA Board of Directors, AMA staff and AMA members everywhere, I extend our heartfelt gratitude for the decades of leadership, guidance and numerous FIM World Championships. Roger, we couldn’t have done it without you.”

The MXON is the premier motocross race in the world. In 2024, three-rider teams from 36 countries converged on Matterley Basin in Winchester, U.K., to battle for the FIM Chamberlain Cup. This year’s event is at Ironman Raceway USA in Crawfordsville, Ind., Oct. 3-5.

De Coster has managed the MXON Team USA 36 times, four of those in the Trophee des Nations race that prior to 1984 featured 250cc motorcycles. With De Coster at the helm, Team USA has won the MXON 21 times and the Trophee des Nations four times.

“I always wanted our sport to become bigger, more important and more respected around the world,” De Coster said. “This is why I raced in many places around the world besides the GPs — Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Australia — and ended up in the United States for good. For me, the Motocross of Nations became the single biggest race of the year, and I am very thankful to the U.S. riders and all the people who supported this event with their best efforts and gave me the support to fulfill a lot of my dreams. Thank you, all.”

MX Sports Pro Racing, the promoter of the AMA Pro Motocross Championship, and Feld  Motor Sports, the promoter of AMA Supercross, join the AMA in thanking and congratulating De Coster.

“There has not been a more important or popular global ambassador for this entire sport than Roger De Coster,” said Davey Coombs, President of MX Sports Pro Racing. “In the 1960s, Roger helped introduce Americans to professional motocross through the Inter-Am tour, and then showcased the sport to much of the rest of the world during his reign as a five-time FIM 500cc World Champion in the 1970s. After retiring as a racer in 1980, Roger quickly moved to America and helped lead Team USA to the top of the world for the first time in 1981, and he has helped maintain that success ever since. Throughout his time with American Honda, Suzuki, and most recently KTM, Roger De Coster has played a vital role in leading each brand to new heights on the AMA circuit. His influence and leadership contributions will be felt for many years to come.”

Added Feld Motor Sports Vice President - Supercross Dave Prater: “Roger has inspired generations of racers to want to compete in the Motocross of Nations and represent their home countries. Roger is in a class by himself and his success with Team USA is unequaled and will go unmatched. On behalf of Feld Motor Sports and the SMX League, we would like to thank Roger for his enduring commitment and passionate leadership to Team USA.”

Starting this year, in alignment with the approach of most FIM National Federations, the AMA director of racing will lead the team, working closely with the individual riders’ team managers to prepare the riders, develop strategy and take responsibility for key decisions.

“The hardest job in the world might be following in the footsteps of Roger ‘The Man’ De Coster because it should go without saying that no one can fill Roger’s shoes,” said AMA Director of Racing Mike Pelletier. “Of course, that’s not our intention here, but simply to adopt the model that other national teams use with success, allowing ourselves to leverage the contributions and input from our riders and their managers. Team USA almost always includes riders from multiple teams with different ideas and strategic thinking.”

De Coster has one of the most storied careers in the sport. As a racer, he won five 500cc Motocross World Championships, numerous 500cc Motocross Grand Prix victories and four Trans-AMA Motocross Championships.

He also was a member of six winning Belgian MXON teams, 10 winning Trophee des Nations teams, was a Gold Medalist in the International Six Day Trial and earned numerous national championships in his native Belgium, including a national trials title.

De Coster was inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2011, the Hall of Fame recognized De Coster as an AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend, a notoriety bestowed upon Hall of Famers whose contributions have transcended categories.

De Coster remains active in the sport as the motorsports director for KTM North America. Previously, he was the team manager for the KTM factory team in both AMA Supercross and Motocross.

TIME TO DIG DEEP AT LOMMEL FOR THE MXGP OF FLANDERS!

LOMMEL (Flanders, Belgium) 30th July 2025 – The 2025 FIM Motocross World Championships has a quick turnaround for the MXGP of Flanders this weekend, as the harder terrain and the hillsides of Loket make way for the undulating, infamously deep sand of the Stedelijk Motocrossterrein circuit of Lommel, one that even the toughest of competitors dread as one of the most physically demanding venues in the world of Motocross!

Despite Lommel’s historic reputation, established immediately in 1981 when Team USA famously took an upset win in the Trophée des Nations, their first in any team competition but the start of a 13-year unbeaten streak in such events, the first Grand Prix held here wasn’t until 1990, when Finnish rider Pekka Vehkonen took both race wins in the 250cc class.  The venue only gained a regular spot on the calendar from 2008, although it took two years out in 2012, when it hosted the Motocross of Nations for the only time, and in 2013, when the series went to Bastogne instead.  The top winners all-time here are Jeffrey Herlings and Jorge Prado, who have each won four GPs in the deep black Belgian sand!  The most successful rider at Lommel who is racing this weekend is Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP star Jago Geerts, who won for three years running in MX2, from 2021 to 2023.

The MXGP class comes to Flanders with the smallest gap between the top two in the Championship since the very beginning of the season, as the red-plate holder for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP, Romain Febvre, has just ten points over Belgian teenager Lucas Coenen, who comes to his home Grand Prix with a two-round winning streak for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing!  Behind them, Glenn Coldenhoff has had a run of finishing third or fourth overall in each of the last four GPs as he tries to lock down a World Championship bronze medal for the second time in his career, and the first one for Fantic Factory Racing MXGP.

The MX2 World Championship has been full of unpredictable results, with the podium positions only being repeated once all season, but Simon Längenfelder has more than doubled his career GP win tally this year, and holds a 47-point advantage in the Championship over fellow Red Bull KTM Factory Racing star Andrea Adamo. Reigning Champ Kay de Wolf is another 12 points further back for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing, and won overall last year in Flanders, despite Längenfelder winning the second race.  Even with Adamo’s poor record at Lommel, this could see a titanic scrap between the title combatants!

The leading Belgian in the MX2 World Championship is Sacha Coenen, who won his only GP this year in the sand of Latvia for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and will look to improve his relatively modest record at the Lommel circuit.  The other top Belgians – Geerts, JM Racing Honda’s Brent van Doninck, and VNT Racing KTM’s Nicholas Vennekens - will all look to get their home crowd cheering in the GP classes!

The EMX125 European Championship Presented by FMF Racing holds its final round this weekend, and the series is tremendously close between Italian Racestore KTM Factory Juniors rider Nicolò Alvisi and the new FIM Junior World Champion from France, Mano Faure on the MJC Yamaha Europe Official EMX125 squad. They sit just six points apart, and with roughly equal results in the sandy races so far this year, it’s anyone’s guess as to whose nerve will hold to tie down the title!  Filippo Mantovani of the Beddini KTM Racing Team sits in third, while Belgian stars Jarne Bervoets, teammate to Faure, and the Fantic Factory Racing EMX125 rider Douwe van Mechlegen, only just missed the podium in the sand of Finland, so they would dearly love to get up there on home ground!

The EMX Open European Championship has its single round this weekend at Lommel, and Czech rider Jakub Teresak will defend his title for KMP Honda Racing Team by DVAG, although he will have competition again from last year’s runner-up Jere Haavisto on the SILVE Racing KTM, and first race winner from 2024, Micha-Boy de Waal. The 2008 MX2 GP winner Gert Krestinov will also line up in this class, as will early-season EMX250 red plate holder Adrien Petit, who could be a real threat with his beach racing experience in the deep stuff at Lommel!  Latvian Mairis Pumpurs made a strong showing in his home GP earlier this season, so he could also have something to say about the podium places, as could French Tech 32 rider Tom Guyon, who scored the very first points for Triumph in MXGP at Ernée this season.

The MXGP of Flanders will be a gruelling and challenging weekend for everybody that takes to the start line, and the racing could be some of the best this season, with many riders able to challenge on a circuit most of them know extremely well.

It’s coming down to the smallest of margins in MXGP at the top of the Championship table.  Romain Febvre took two wins from the three races at Loket, but a tiny slip in race one on Sunday meant that Lucas Coenen still caught up by five points over the weekend, leaving the gap at just ten between them as they head to Lommel!

In terms of their form in the Belgian sand, as usual it is Febvre who has the strongest history here, with six career podium appearances including two GP wins, in 2021 and 2023, both of them against such sand-masters as Jeffrey Herlings and Jorge Prado.  Third last year even on a comeback from injury, the strong Frenchman is not to be underestimated in the heavy going.  Coenen, meanwhile, had a crash-affected GP last year to score 5-8 finishes for seventh overall. Two seconds behind Jago Geerts in 2023, plus his first ever EMX250 victory in 2022, show that he’s not allergic to the sand, so the question is if the young pretender can cope with the pressure of his home GP to bring the fight to Febvre!

Glenn Coldenhoff took a race win at Lommel in 2022, and has finished third overall here on four occasions over the years. A 6-6 for fifth overall last year shows that he can get the Fantic around Lommel quickly, and his 43-point advantage over Ruben Fernandez in the battle for third is looking healthy. The Honda HRC pilot missed last year’s event and took a best race finish of sixth in 2023.

Although he doesn’t like to be classed as a sand specialist, Calvin Vlaanderen has taken his best results this season in the soft stuff, including his first podium of the season in Finland for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP. He has finished second overall twice at the venue just down the road from the team’s workshop, and for sure he will lift the blue brand’s spirits if he can match or even better that in 2025.

Andrea Bonacorsi has been strong in the sand this year for Fantic Factory Racing MXGP, and an improvement on his ninth position last year is likely. He pushed Coenen to the limit in EMX250 three years ago, and could be a surprise force this weekend as he tries to defend sixth in the series from Maxime Renaux.  The Frenchman is fighting through another injury-affected season, but has twice got on the podium here in MX2, so if the body is strong enough, he could put in a good result, maybe even enough to bridge the two-point gap to Bonacorsi!

Aruba.it Ducati Factory MX Team rider Jeremy Seewer is not a sand specialist, but now up to eighth in the standings he will do all he can to grind out a result. He has climbed the podium twice here in the past, but a return in 2025 would be a surprise. Jago Geerts , who had that winning streak at Lommel from 2021 to 2023 in MX2, needs seven points to move past the injured Kevin Horgmo for 11th in the Championship, and if he gets a start like he did at Lugo in May then he could even be a threat to win again! He will have no shortage of fan support at his home GP.

Ben Watson for MRT Racing Team Beta has happy memories of Lommel after two race wins and three podium finishes in MX2, including the Grand Prix victory at the last of three rounds held here in 2020.  Tenth overall in 2023 is something he will be looking to match or better on the Italian machine.  Brian Bogers took his single career GP victory here in 2022 and could again be strong for Fantic Factory Racing MXGP, while Roan van de Moosdijk has memories of a race win in MX2 and second overall here in 2020 as he continues to campaign for the KTM Kosak Team.

Finally, Brent van Doninck is a sand master himself, with the JM Racing Honda team workshop within sight of the finish line jump, and in a year where he has troubled the top ten on many occasions, he could be a nuisance with a good start this weekend!

The most powerful bikes at the track will be a challenge for the very fittest riders on one of the toughest circuits in the world, and the MXGP elite will be tested to the maximum this weekend, which should make for some amazing racing! Don’t miss this one!

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Romain Febvre (FRA, KAW), 678 Points; 2. Lucas Coenen (BEL, KTM), 668 Pts; 3. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, FAN), 494 Pts; 4. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, HON), 451 Pts; 5. Calvin Vlaanderen (NED, YAM) 392 Pts; 6. Andrea Bonacorsi (ITA, FAN), 370 Pts; 7. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 368 Pts; 8. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, DUC), 327 Pts; 9. Simon Längenfelder comes to Lommel with the red plate and a 47-point lead over Andrea Adamo, as both riders took a race win in Czechia to capitalise on a rough day for reigning World Champion Kay de Wolf.  De Wolf took overall victory here last year with a 1-2 scorecard, and just missed out on the GP win, which would have been his first, with the same scoreline back in 2022.

He must come in as the favourite this weekend, especially as he needs to make up 12 points to catch Adamo before he can even think about Längenfelder. The German is no slouch in the Belgian sand, however, having taken third overall here in each of the last two years, including the second race win in 2024.

Adamo is the one who might not look forward to this weekend, after missing last year’s race due to injuries from Loket, and finishing seventh and eighth here in the two years before that.  His sand form has been better in 2025, and the gritty Italian is likely to dig in for a good result.

Sacha Coenen is another with a less than impressive record around the Flemish circuit, with a best of ninth overall last year, but he is 28 points ahead of Thibault Benistant for fourth in the series and hoping to keep the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 star at bay.  The Frenchman hasn’t lined up here since 2022, when he took sixth overall, although his best of fourth overall came in 2021.  He did take three wins out of four at this circuit in the EMX250 class during the 2020 season, however, so he can still ride in the heavy going!

While Liam Everts is still unable to compete for Nestaan Husqvarna Factroy Racing due to his injuries from Finland, he is still unlikely to be caught by Monster Energy Triumph Racing star Camden McLellan, although the South African likes a bit of sand and was third in the opening race here last year.  His teammate Guillem Farres has moved up to ninth in the series, and last saw Lommel back in 2022 in EMX250, when he finished second in race two to Lucas Coenen! The Spaniard hasn’t had his best results in sand this year, but with good starts he could still be a threat.

Valerio Lata is eighth in the Championship for Honda HRC, and still the top rookie, and he won the EMX250 round here last year with two second places. Van Venrooy KTM Racing’s Cas Valk won the second race that day, and is now tenth in the standings in MX2, hoping that the deep sand can spark a return to top form.  He is the highest-placed rider in the Championship without a win of any kind, and would dearly love to rectify that situation at one of his more local rounds!  Mathis Valin, who completed that 2024 EMX250 podium with a 1-4 scorecard, is coming off his best GP weekend yet for Kawasaki Racing Team MX2, and will be keen to show off his sand skills at a venue where he was also a podium man in EMX125 two years ago!

EMX250 regulars Nico Greutmann, Liam Owens, and Mads Fredsoe of the Cat Moto Bauerschmidt Husqvarna team, Max Werner and Gyan Doensen of Gabriel SS24 KTM Factory Juniors, and Ollie Colmer for Chambers KTM Racing, who becomes the first British rider to race MX2 this year, all help to fill out a 40-rider entry list for one of the toughest GPs of the season!

WMX World Champion Lotte van Drunen will also line up, audaciously all in pink for De Baets Yamaha MX-Team as she prepares for the next WMX round at Arnhem!

It’s time for the sand men to cash in and the rest to make the best of it at the MXGP of Flanders, join us for a dramatic weekend worthy of “Lommelwood” as the deep sand never fails to deliver an exciting Grand Prix!

MX2 - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Simon Längenfelder (GER, KTM), 665 Points; 2. Andrea Adamo (ITA, KTM), 618 Pts;  3. Kay de Wolf (NED, HUS), 606 Pts; 4. Sacha Coenen (BEL, KTM), 520 Pts; 5. Thibault Benistant (FRA, YAM), 492 Pts; 6. Liam Everts (BEL, HUS), 464 Pts; 7. Camden McLellan (RSA, TRI), 417 Pts; 8. Valerio Lata (ITA, HON), 330 Pts; 9. Guillem Farres (ESP, TRI), 306 Pts; 10. Cas Valk (NED, KTM), 299 Pts.
