LOMMEL (Flanders, Belgium), 1st August 2026 – The mercilessly hot summer kept the heat coming today, right when the riders didn’t want it at the equally merciless Stedelijk Motocrossterrain Lommel circuit and its bottomless depths of heavy Benelux sand!  However, the athletes of the MXGP Paddock delivered another fantastic day of action in the Qualifying Races for the 14th round of the FIM Motocross World Championships, the unforgettable MXGP of Flanders!

The MXGP class saw yet another Qualifying Race victory for Jeffrey Herlings, his fifth of the season for Honda HRC Petronas, as he extended his Championship lead over the still-absent Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Lucas Coenen. In second place, for the second time this season, was MXGP class rookie Kay de Wolf, having recently confirmed a three-year extension to his contract with Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.  Andrea Adamo put in a solid ride for third, moving himself up to fifth in the Championship for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

Camden McLellan put in a sand-riding masterclass to take the MX2 Qualifying Race win for Triumph Racing Factory Team, with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s reigning World Champion Simon Längenfelder capitalising on a great start to take second place, ahead of the Triumph Racing Factory Team’s red plate holder Guillem Farres.

Everybody knows that tomorrow’s Grand Prix races will be tortuous, but the top men still did all that was necessary to claim the maximum points possible in today’s races!

A statement of intent was issued in Free Practice, as Jeffrey Herlings put in the fastest time by an amazing 2.3 seconds over Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre. Tim Gajser was third for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP in the morning session.

A late run by Kay de Wolf looked to threaten “The Bullet” in Time Practice, but the red plate holder took pole by a solid 0.867 seconds to lead the Dutch 1-2.  Febvre, Gajser, and the second Honda HRC Petronas machine of Tom Vialle rounded out the top five going to the start line.

In a beautiful retro white livery, the JK Racing Yamaha of Isak Gifting shot into the lead of the Qualifying Race, at a circuit where the Swede has taken his career best GP finishes, but Herlings, De Wolf, and Vialle were right on his tail!  Andrea Adamo made some nice first lap moves, passing Vialle for what would be third after Gifting made a slight mistake to lose the lead halfway around the first full lap!

Vialle would also pass Gifting on lap two, with Gajser giving chase in sixth ahead of Red Bull Ducati Factory MXGP Team’s returning Italian Andrea Bonacorsi, and the third Honda HRC Petronas of Ruben Fernandez. Febvre was next, having stalled at the start of the lap to drop to ninth ahead of the KTM Kosak Team rider Roan van de Moosdijk.

Febvre took his time to get around Fernandez, doing so on lap five on a nice outside line before the Pit Lane straight’s wall jump, then followed up to pass Bonacorsi for seventh a lap later.  Van de Moosdijk would drop out of the points on lap nine of the 12, as Jago Geerts finished as the top home runner in tenth for MRT Racing Team Beta.

De Wolf briefly closed on Herlings, but the series leader put the hammer down to build up a good lead.  Gajser was eventually able to dig in and pass Vialle as the Frenchman ran too close to the edge of the track in the mid-section. He didn’t quite have enough pace to haul in Adamo, who equalled his best of the year in third position, for the fourth time in 2026. 

A frustrated Febvre made a last-lap mistake to drop to seventh behind Vialle and Gifting, giving the Swedish Viking his best Qualifying Race finish since taking fourth at this very circuit last year!  Fernandez was able to outlast Bonacorsi to take eighth, the Italian still matching his best Saturday finish of the year.

Herlings would end up needing that big lead as he made a small mistake to tip over on the final lap, but he still won by an amazing 14 seconds, a margin that will shake up his opposition heading into tomorrow!  For now, his 75th career Qualifying Race win extends his Championship lead to 59 points, guaranteeing that his number plate will stay red for the MXGP of Sweden, but tomorrow is still enough for everyone to think about!

The MXGP riders will all be chasing a good night’s rest for the day of punishment they are all in for tomorrow. This one will test them all!

Jeffrey Herlings: “The crash shouldn’t have happened [about the crash in the last lap], but other than that it was a pretty good day. We had an okay start, I think it was second or third, and managed to come through into the lead after the first lap. From there I could do my own pace and pull away towards the end of the race. Just a silly mistake on the left-hander on the last lap that shouldn’t happen, but we still got the win. Looking forward to racing tomorrow.”

Kay de Wolf: “Definitely, tomorrow’s races are another ten minutes longer, twice over, so I was playing it smart. Then Jeffrey tipped over on the last lap.. no but that was fun! I had a good race, stayed behind Jeffrey and felt really comfortable there, which is what we’ve been doing in the Dutch Masters as well. Hopefully tomorrow, especially in the second race, I can latch onto him for the whole race and he can tow me to the finish line.”

Andrea Adamo: “It was a really decent result. The first two are both from Holland and the third one is from Italy, so I’m really proud and really happy with how I rode. I had a good start, put in some good laps early on, and when I couldn’t follow Jeffrey and Kay I just rode my own race. I’m proud of that, and I can’t wait for tomorrow.”

Perhaps now the brightest remaining Belgian hope for world title success this season, Sacha Coenen, got the hopes of the local fans up with the best time in Free Practice for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, while the Triumph Factory riders packed in behind him. Red plate holder Guillem Farres was marginally faster than Camden McLellan, with two-thirds of a second covering them all. 

For the Qualifying Race gate pick, however, McLellan put in a barn-storming final lap to take the fastest lap in Time Practice by over a second and a third! Simon Längenfelder was a surprise second after changing his rear shock mid-session, with Farres a tiny fraction behind him. Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider Janis Reisulis was next along, and the other big Belgian hope, Liam Everts, was fifth fastest for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.

The Red Bull KTM riders were close into turn one, but Längenfelder edged into the lead ahead of Sacha Coenen, while Kay Karssemakers grabbed third for Dixon Racing Team Kawasaki!  The Young Motion Powered by Risa rider Sandro Sools was briefly fourth until Everts and McLellan led the charge past him, and the Swede was unfortunate to crash out later in the opening lap.

Farres was initially outside the top ten, but recovered well to hold seventh after the first full lap, then inherited sixth as Everts crashed down a short dip, remounting quickly to hold seventh behind the Honda HRC Petronas machine of Valerio Lata.

Both Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 riders, Janis and Karlis Reisulis, had crashed in the first few corners, but Janis was amazingly up to ninth by lap two, then quickly passed Maddi Racing Honda ABF Italia rider Maxime Grau a lap later! Osička KTM MX Team’s Julius Mikula was on the fringe of the top ten, in his last GP as a teenager.

McLellan knew he had the pace, and patiently moved up the order, being slightly gifted second place as Coenen made a mistake on lap four, down the same dip that claimed Everts.  He had a 5.8 second gap to Längenfelder when he took the lead, but again he did not panic and stayed patient. 

The Reisulis brothers continued to both move forward, eventually finishing sixth and seventh, and both will be podium threats if they can start well tomorrow. Karssemakers eventually slipped to eighth, finishing just ahead of Mikula and Lata, who rounded out the top ten.

Everts had another small crash but still held on for fifth, close to Coenen at the finish as the younger Belgian crashed three times through the race, saving Farres the bother of having to pass him!  The Spaniard’s third spot extends his points lead further, now up to 34.

McLellan took five sweet laps to catch Längenfelder, and made a simple but effective pass up the inside into a left-hander to take the lead on lap nine!  From there, the result was inevitable, and the South African took his second Qualifying Race win of the season by over eight seconds!  He closed slightly on Sacha for second in the series, the gap between them also at 34.  The big question is whether or not McLellan can get away with his usual average starts in tomorrow’s GP races, or can he improve on them to make his life all the simpler!  He is the favourite for sure, but with tomorrow’s track likely to become even more gnarly than today, absolutely nothing is guaranteed in either class!

With tomorrow set to be in hot conditions again, the racing should serve up all sorts of surprises as the MXGP and MX2 elite deal with one of the toughest tracks on the entire planet!

Camden McLellan: “I feel good, it’s been a decent day so far. There’s still a little bit to improve for tomorrow, but things are looking good and I’m enjoying my time out here. There are a couple of sections where I’m not totally happy with what I’m doing on the bike, so I need to carry a bit more flow and open up the turns. I was riding a bit tight in the beginning, and if I open it up more it’ll be easier on the body and the bike, hopefully making tomorrow easier too.”

LOMMEL (Belgium) – 31st July 2026 – Infront Moto Racing officially launched the 30 Years Celebration of the FIM Motocross World Championship, (1996 to 2026) on Friday, unveiling a spectacular collection of world champion motorcycles spanning three decades of the series under the leadership of the Giuseppe and David Luongo, from Action Group and Youthstream through to today's Infront Moto Racing.

David Luongo, President and CEO of Infront Moto Racing, took to the stage at the MXGP of Flanders to mark the milestone. He spoke about the last three decades of the championship and the many novelties introduced along the way, including the two-floor pitlane and the Skybox positioned behind the start gate. He described the 30 years as a story built on passion, crediting that passion as the driving force behind the championship's growth. He also pointed to the return of historic venues such as Foxhill and the continuity of Lommel itself as reminders of motocross's roots and heritage.

FIM / CMS Director Antonio Alia looked back over the championship's history and paid tribute to the work put into this championship and the Synergy between Infront Moto Racing, the FIM and of course the riders, Teams and Manufacturers who have been the major actors in building successfully the series over the past 30 years.

Following the official speeches, a number of figures central to the championship's recent history joined the stage. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager Davide De Carli, whose team is among the most successful in MXGP's last 30 years, and nine-time world champion Antonio Cairoli spoke about their experience in the paddock.

Representatives from the championship's manufacturer teams also took part: Alexandre Kowalski for Yamaha, Honda HRC Petronas Team Owner Giacomo Gariboldi for Honda, Kawasaki Racing Team Manager Antti Pyrhönen for Kawasaki, Sylvain Geboers for Suzuki, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing Team Manager Rasmus Jørgensen for Husqvarna, and Dirk Gruebel for KTM.

It was a rare but impressive gathering: team owners, manufacturer bosses and champions spanning three generations of the sport sharing the same stage. Nine-time world champion Antonio Cairoli stood alongside the current generation of title holders such as Kay de Wolf, Simon Längenfelder, Andrea Adamo, Lotte van Drunen, Joel Smets and Kevin Strijbos while the manufacturers who have powered the championship since the 1990s were represented side by side with those competing for titles today. The occasion tied together the championship's past, present and future in a single moment, a reminder of how far the series has come since Action Group and Youthstream first took on its promotion, and of the community of riders, teams and manufacturers that has carried it forward. With many people from the Paddock, media and beyond being present at the event, it showed a genuine celebration of the sport.

At the centre of the celebration is an expo of world championship-winning motorcycles. The full collection covers 22 title-winning machines from MXGP, MX2 and Women's Motocross champions between 1997 and 2025, representing seven manufacturers. Sixteen of these machines were on display in Lommel this weekend, spanning KTM, Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, Husqvarna and Kawasaki:

The collection is open to the public throughout the weekend in Lommel, giving fans at the MXGP of Flanders the chance to see the machines in person.

This was the perfect event to launch an amazing weekend of racing in the Sand temple of motocross in Lommel this weekend.

Husqvarna Factory Racing, Nestaan and MX2 World Champion Kay de Wolf have strengthened their long-standing partnership with new multi-year agreements.

Husqvarna Factory Racing is pleased to announce new multi-year agreements with both Nestaan and MX2 World Champion Kay de Wolf, extending one of the most successful partnerships in modern motocross and reaffirming the brand's long-term commitment to the FIM Motocross World Championship.

The renewed agreements represent the next chapter in a relationship built on trust, shared ambition and sustained success at the highest level of the sport.

De Wolf's story with Husqvarna Factory Racing began eight years ago when he joined the programme as a promising 13-year-old talent. Since then, the Dutchman has progressed through the ranks to become one of the sport's leading riders, culminating in his outstanding 2024 MX2 World Championship title. His new agreement continues a journey built on loyalty, shared ambition and long-term development.

Nestaan's relationship with Husqvarna stretches back to the manufacturer's return to the FIM Motocross World Championship. After initially supporting the factory effort, the Dutch company assumed responsibility for operating the official Husqvarna Factory Racing team in 2020 and has since helped establish one of the benchmark organisations in the paddock.

That partnership reached new heights during a landmark 2024 season, when Husqvarna Factory Racing secured both the MX2 Riders' and Manufacturers' World Championships, claimed victory in 16 of the season's 20 Grands Prix and finished first and second in the final MX2 standings. The renewed agreements build on that success while providing a strong platform for the future.

Looking ahead, Husqvarna Factory Racing enters the next chapter with an exciting and settled rider line-up. Alongside de Wolf in MXGP, Liam Everts races ahead in MX2, and remains under contract through the 2027 season, providing continuity as the team continues its pursuit of Grand Prix victories and World Championship success.

Together, the renewed agreements underline Husqvarna Factory Racing's long-term vision for the future. With Nestaan, Kay de Wolf (MXGP) and Liam Everts (MX2) all committed to the programme, the team enters the coming seasons with a shared ambition to continue fighting for victories and world titles.

LOMMEL (Flanders, Belgium) 31st July 2026 – The 2026 MXGP FIM Motocross World Championships heads to the deep sands of Lommel this weekend, for round 14 of the series which will test the riders and their sand skills harder than they have been for several months on the MXGP tour!

Jeffrey Herlings comes to one of his favourite circuits with the MXGP Championship leader’s red plate on his Honda HRC Petronas machine, for the first time since the second round in March, and he’ll be looking to take an unprecedented fifth GP win at this tortuous venue.  Home hero Lucas Coenen is still second in the standings but after being unable to compete in Czechia last weekend, he is doubtful for this one. Third in the series is defending World Champion Romain Febvre, who has won here twice before and is looking for the hat-trick!

The MX2 class could be wide open for this one as the entire series top five could be considered as contenders, but Spaniard Guillem Farres is on a four-GP winning streak and eager to prove that his sand skills match up to the best! Local favourites Sacha Coenen and Liam Everts will be up for the fight, as will Farres’ Triumph Racing teammate Camden McLellan!

The EMX250 European Motocross Championship returns after a month away, and the EMX Open single-round Championship will pitch some of the sport’s leading veterans and rising stars against each other for a race on each day!

Belgian fans who stay at home will be able to enjoy the action LIVE in Flemish on Play Sports, as they do throughout the year, and RTBF sports channel Tipik will also be broadcasting in French.

To say Nestaan Husqvarna factory rider, Kay de Wolf loves the tough Lommel circuit, would be a huge understatement. It hasn’t been one way traffic in the love affair though, as Lommel also saw him hurt himself at the track in 2023 and miss the Sunday races.

In his first year in Grand Prix racing, de Wolf finished second in the MX2 class 2021, second in MX2 in 2022, although as mentioned, de Wolf had a tough time at the 2023 MXGP of Flanders in Lommel, where an injury forced him to withdraw early and take only five championship points. He did however come back to win in the MX2 class in 2024 and 2025.

Last year, the Dutchman’s perfect 1-1-1 scorecard marked a pivotal moment in his MX2 title campaign-catapulting him back into second in the championship standings and reigniting the chase for the red plate.

“Lommel is a special place for me,” De Wolf said. “It’s one of the most demanding tracks on the calendar, but I felt at home straight away. From the first lap on Saturday, everything just clicked - I found my rhythm early and focused on staying smooth and consistent. From the first lap on Saturday, I felt super comfortable. I found my rhythm and just focused on keeping consistent. The team gave me the perfect bike for this kind of track - I could use my height and style to really ride the sand well. This was exactly the weekend we needed in the championship fight.”

In 2024 and around what is widely regarded as one of the most unforgiving and challenging motocross circuits in the world, de Wolf delivered a superb qualifying win, and a set of 1-2 finishes on Sunday, to secure the overall victory.

De Wolf arrived at what could be considered his alternate home circuit - just 25 km down the road from his hometown of Valkenswaard in the Netherlands - in full confidence; having secured his fifth win of the season just a week earlier at the MXGP of the Czech Republic.

“It was a really positive weekend overall.” De Wolf said after his victory. “I’m happy to finally win Lommel - I can’t thank the team enough; I think the timing is really great too. Having everyone here, just two minutes from the workshop, and with the news on Friday that Husqvarna is staying!”

Now in 2026, the talented sand rider will no doubt be hoping for more success at Lommel, although the tough track will make it a tough task, as he only returned from injury in Loket last weekend, meaning his fitness won’t be at its best and Lommel demands 100% fitness.

No doubt, standing in his way is his hero, Jeffrey Herlings and we all know, Lommel is also a place that Herlings enjoys, with a handful of victories at the circuit over his career. Both live close to Lommel, and a Dutch shootout would be the perfect weekend for the fans crossing the border into Belgium.
