Afyonkarahisar (Türkiye) 4 September 2026 – The 2026 MXGP of Türkiye was officially launched on Friday evening, as a packed Motofest Stage brought together riders, team personnel, federation leaders and national and regional dignitaries for an Opening Ceremony that carried all the energy of the racing to come for the Round 17 of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Welcome remarks were delivered by Mr. David Luongo, President and CEO of Infront Moto Racing, Mr. Antonio Alia Portela, President of the FIM Motocross Commission; Mr. Mehmet Sadık Vefa, President of the Turkish Motorcycle Federation; Mr. Ahmet Ali Temurci, Director General for International Organizations and Foreign Relations at the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Türkiye; Hon. Av. Burcu Köksal, Mayor of Afyonkarahisar; Mr. Mehmet Taytak and Mr. Hasan Arslan, Deputies for Afyonkarahisar; and Dr. Naci Aktaş, Governor of Afyonkarahisar.

Each speaker welcomed the FIM Motocross World Championship paddock to Afyonkarahisar and underlined the pride the region takes in hosting one of the most important rounds of the 2026 season, in front of a crowd whose noise and enthusiasm set the tone for the entire weekend.

Before and throughout the ceremony, riders, officials and team members were invited to discover Turkish delicacies and local specialities, with food and drink served on the Motofest site in a warm and typically Turkish display of hospitality that gave the evening its unmistakably local character.

Once the ceremonial speeches concluded, the riders were invited on stage for the official family photo. Among them were Honda HRC PETRONAS trio Jeffrey Herlings, Tom Vialle and Ruben Fernandez, Triumph Racing Factory Team pair Guillem Farres and Camden Mc Lellan, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing riders Andrea Adamo, Sacha Coenen and Simon Längenfelder, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Liam Everts, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 brothers Janis Reisulis and Karlis Reisulis, Fantic Factory Racing MXGP’s Jörgen Matthias Talviku, Team Honda Motoblouz SR Motul’s Kevin Horgmo, Venrooy KTM Racing’s Noel Zanocz and Venum BUD Racing Kawasaki’s Francisco Garcia.

With the photo taken and the stage lights still on, the MXGP of Türkiye was officially launched. Afyon now hosts what could prove to be one of the defining weekends of the 2026 season, with the MXGP World Championship title on the line for Herlings and the MX2 fight still very much alive between the leading contenders.

Racing gets underway on Saturday, with the MXGP, MX2, EMX250 and EMX125 fields all in action across the weekend.

AFYONKARAHISAR (Türkiye) 04 September 2026 – The 2026 MXGP FIM Motocross World Championships comes to the start of its final three rounds as we cross into Asia for the MXGP of Türkiye this weekend, as round 17 is hosted by the Afyon Motor Sports Center in the mid-western region of this historic nation that bridges two continents!

This GP could have its own historic context, as Jeffrey Herlings has put himself within reach of clinching his sixth Motocross World Championship, and his first for Honda HRC Petronas! The Dutchman has to gain two points on his nearest chaser, defending World Champion Romain Febvre, by the end of race one on Sunday to mathematically make himself impossible to catch. Even if that doesn’t happen, “The Bullet” is looking good to seal the deal by the end of the weekend.  We have a strong chance of seeing him become only the fourth rider to win his sixth world title!

The MX2 class is still very much up for grabs, as Spaniard Guillem Farres has just 25 points between himself and Sacha Coenen, with the Belgian looking strong here last year and fired up to close that gap! Farres’ Triumph Racing teammate Camden McLellan has caught up to both of them as well, so the closing rounds should see a pulsating title battle in the quarter-litre contest!

The EMX250 European Motocross Championship returns for its final round, with a few riders looking to bow out of the class in style before graduating in 2027, and the same can be said for the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing series.  Although those Championships are decided, they should still serve up some awesome racing in the heat of Afyon!

There is no denying, Honda HRC Petronas factory rider, Jeffrey Herlings has been relentless in the search of his sixth Motocross world title. Major injuries have cost him at least four titles, maybe even more, and while nobody wanted to see Lucas Coenen go out injured in England this year, the next man in line, Herlings, not only felt the pain for the Belgian, but understood, you have to be in it, to win it.

Now, as we head to the 18th round of the 2026 MXGP championship at the Afyon Motor Sports Center in Afyonkarahisar, Türkiye, “The Bullet” will be ready to add that sixth world championship to the five he already has.

Of course, a win will see him join the great Joel Robert, who for decades was the holder of the most world motocross championships and most Grand Prix victory, with six titles and 50 GP victories. Stefan Everts broke those records around 25 years ago, and in the last decade, it’s been Herlings who had broken records, with 122 GP wins.

He would become statistically, the third best GP rider of all time, only behind Stefan Everts and Antonio Cairoli, who have ten and nine world championships each. Everts has 101 GP wins and Cairoli 94. For Herlings, 2026 has been very good to him.

“We have won 10 GPs this year, out of 17 right now. Outside the DNFs, I haven’t been outside the top three in Sunday races. I was third twice, otherwise first or second, so I have been very consistent. It does bring some pressure in the team, but nobody spoke about the championship. There is a lot of experience, and we just focus from race to race. Now its time to think about the championship. We are now more than 140 points in front, so only an injury can stop us. We need to be smart, but when you are alive, everything is a risk.”

And while Herlings doesn’t forget how he got into this position, he also knows that those years of broken bones and championships lost, he has had seasons where he has been by far, the fastest man on the planet. His 2018 season is now being compared to this 2026 title fight.

“The second part of the year yes (similar to 2018). I am still ashamed that Lucas got hurt, because I feel like I got something from that. I am not saying I am beating him every single time, but I feel like I can fight with him now. I don’t know if he goes to the next three GPs, because the big rumour is he is going to America next year. It would be a shame not to race him in the near future, because at the beginning of the year, he was the man to beat. I beat him on occasions, but he started better than I was. 2018 I was better, but I feel like the competition wasn’t as strong as it is today. In 2018 I was only fighting a 32/33-year-old Antonio Cairoli, but now I am facing a lot of young guns, facing Lucas Coenen, Kay de Wolf, Tim Gajser. Romain Febvre. It was basically just me and Lucas winning motos. I think Tom won one and Tim won one. If you take away Lucas, I would have won almost all the races. Right now, I feel like 2018, but the beginning of the year, I was not on that level, but I feel like now, I am pretty close and I am almost 10 years older.”

And if he can claim title number six this weekend, he isn’t looking at hanging up the helmet. In fact, he is in deep discussions with HRC to extend his contact for more years and hopefully, with that partnership, also more titles.

“Sometimes, when I wake up in the morning and I am sitting in my garage, its weird, but I still have so much passion for doing it. Yes, I like money, I am not going to lie, but, at the same time, I am not racing for money anymore. I can have a great life if I stop tomorrow. At the same time, I still enjoy the sacrifice. I still want to be at the top. I have nothing to prove. I have won the most Races, the most GPs, without injuries, I probably had the most championships. Many times, I was leading by a big margin, so I have nothing to prove to anyone, but I still wake up every morning with the same desire to be the best I can be. Even now, we are considering extending the contract. I am like an old bulldog that doesn’t want to give up.”

Unlike the Fox Holeshot Award, the 2026 Acerbis Best Lap Competition is still live in MXGP and MX2 alike. One point separates Lucas Coenen and Jeffrey Herlings in the premier class, and Guillem Farrés can still reach Sacha Coenen in MX2. Both trophies are handed over at the MXGP Awards in Darwin.

Sixteen Grands Prix down, three to go, and the Acerbis Best Lap Competition is refusing to settle. In MXGP, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Lucas Coenen holds seven fastest laps to Honda HRC PETRONAS' Jeffrey Herlings' six. In MX2, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Sacha Coenen leads on eight from Monster Energy Triumph Racing Team's Guillem Farrés on five. With one point available at each of Türkiye, China and Australia, neither classification is mathematically closed.

MXGP: a season split in two halves

The MXGP numbers hide a clean narrative break. Lucas Coenen took seven of the first ten Grand Prix fastest laps of the season, a run through Almonte, Frauenfeld, Riola Sardo, Teutschenthal, Kegums, Montevarchi and Agueda that looked like it would decide the award before the summer was out.

Then Herlings arrived. The Dutchman has set the fastest lap at five of the last six Grands Prix, at Johannesburg, Loket, Lommel, Uddevalla and Arnhem, with only Romain Febvre at Foxhills interrupting the sequence. Coenen has not been quickest at a Grand Prix since Agueda. On current form the momentum belongs entirely to Herlings, and he needs to out-score Coenen by two across the last three rounds to take it.

There is history at stake for Coenen. He won the Acerbis Best Lap Award in MX2 in 2024 and again in MXGP in 2025, and a third consecutive title would be an unusual achievement across two classes. He is also the defending winner in the premier class, where he finished 2025 on eight fastest laps ahead of Herlings on four.

MX2: Sacha Coenen cannot be beaten outright, but he can be caught

The MX2 picture mirrors it almost exactly. Sacha Coenen had built a seven to one advantage by Johannesburg, then Farrés reeled off four consecutive Grand Prix fastest laps at Foxhills, Loket, Lommel and Uddevalla before Coenen answered at Arnhem.

The arithmetic is worth stating precisely. Coenen leads by three with three points left, so Farrés cannot pass him, but a clean sweep of Türkiye, China and Darwin would tie the pair on eight. Simon Längenfelder, the reigning MX2 World Champion and the 2025 Acerbis Best Lap winner with six, has managed just two this season.

Number worth knowing

Teutschenthal produced the anomaly of the season. Sacha Coenen's MX2 best lap of 1:57.905 was faster than his twin brother Lucas' MXGP best lap of 1:58.391 at the same Grand Prix, the only round of the sixteen so far where the MX2 field has been quicker than the premier class.

How it works, and where it ends

At the end of each Grand Prix, the rider who records the fastest lap in MXGP and in MX2 earns one point in the Acerbis Best Lap Competition. Nineteen Grands Prix, nineteen points per class, and the rider with the most at the end of the season takes the award.

Both trophies will be presented at the MXGP Awards ceremony in Darwin, at the close of the MXGP of Australia on 20 September, the final round of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship. The ceremony will be staged at Mindil Casino Resort and streamed worldwide on MXGP-TV, YouTube and Facebook.

With three rounds of the 2026 season still to run, one Fox Holeshot Award is already decided and the other could hardly be tighter. Both trophies will be handed over at the MXGP Awards in Darwin.

MXGP: three riders, six races, two holeshots between them

The premier class could not be more different. Honda HRC PETRONAS' Tom Vialle leads the MXGP Fox Holeshot classification on nine, but Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Lucas Coenen is right behind him on seven, and Jeffrey Herlings is a further one back on six. Six races remain. Any of the three can still win it.

Lucas Coenen is the rider with the most to defend. He took the 2025 MXGP Fox Holeshot Award with 13 starts won in his rookie premier class season, and a second straight title would confirm the Coenen brothers as the fastest gate-droppers in the paddock. Vialle, for his part, has been the most consistent starter in the second half of the season, and Herlings has shown at Foxhills and Lommel that he can still take both holeshots in a single day when the gate suits him.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Sacha Coenen has done it again. With 14 Fox Holeshots from the opening 16 Grands Prix of the 2026 season, the Belgian has mathematically secured his third consecutive MX2 Fox Holeshot Award, adding to the titles he claimed in 2024 and 2025. With only six races left on the calendar, nobody can catch him.

The margin tells the story. Coenen's closest rival, team-mate Simon Längenfelder, sits on six, with Monster Energy Triumph Racing Team's Guillem Farrés on five. Coenen has taken more holeshots this season than his three nearest rivals combined, and his run through the European summer was close to untouchable: doubles at Riola Sardo, Pietramurata, Teutschenthal, Kegums and Uddevalla, five Grands Prix in which he led the field out of the first corner in both races.

How it works, and where it ends

The rule is as simple as the moment it rewards. At every MXGP and MX2 Grand Prix, the first rider across the white line painted at the exit of the first corner takes the Fox Holeshot and one point in the classification. Two races per Grand Prix, 19 Grands Prix, 38 chances per class across the season.

Both awards will be presented at the MXGP Awards ceremony in Darwin, at the close of the MXGP of Australia on 20 September, the final round of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship. Last year the Coenen brothers collected both trophies together against the backdrop of Mindil Beach. Sacha has already booked his return to the stage. Whether his brother joins him will be settled in Türkiye, Shanghai and Darwin.

For FIM MXGP/ MX2/ Women’s World Championships and FIM Motocross of Nations: 

• from 2027: the use of a functional/operational airbag system is highly recommended
• from 2028: the use of a functional/operational airbag system is compulsory. 

The airbag system must be either:
- a FIM Homologated Airbag Off-road (FRHPab-01)* or
- one of the Airbag systems declared compliant with FIM Category 3 (Motocross) listed HERE

The equipment must be worn, correctly fastened, at all times during on-track activity (the airbag must be functional/operational at least at the start of each track session). The decision of the FIM Technical Director is final in matters of rider equipment.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing rider will miss the final three MXGP rounds and the Motocross of Nations following a hand injury sustained in a crash on Monday.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing has confirmed that Kay de Wolf will miss the remainder of the 2026 FIM Motocross World Championship season following a crash on Monday.

The 21-year-old sustained an injury to his hand in the incident, ruling him out of the final three Grands Prix of the season in Türkiye, China and Australia. De Wolf will also be unable to represent the Netherlands at the FIM Motocross of Nations at Ernée, France, on October 4.

The setback brings an early end to de Wolf’s rookie MXGP campaign, during which the former MX2 World Champion established himself as a regular contender at the front of the premier class.

De Wolf had already underlined his potential with podium finishes in Sardinia and Latvia before an ankle injury interrupted his season earlier this summer. After returning to racing, the Dutchman quickly rediscovered his front-running pace, with two standout performances coming at the MXGP of Flanders in Lommel and his home Grand Prix in Arnhem. On both occasions, de Wolf delivered 2-2 finishes to secure second overall and further underline his competitiveness in his debut MXGP season.

De Wolf currently sits ninth in the MXGP World Championship standings with 428 points. With his 2026 racing season now concluded, attention will turn fully to recovery. De Wolf is scheduled to undergo surgery later this month to address the ankle injury he has been managing during the second half of the season, before beginning a rehabilitation programme aimed at returning to full fitness for 2027.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing wishes Kay a successful recovery and looks forward to seeing him back at full fitness for the 2027 season.

#74 - Kay de Wolf: “Unfortunately we had a crash on Monday which has ended up bringing my season to an early finish. I picked up another injury to my hand, which means I’ll miss the final rounds of the season and also the Motocross of Nations, which I’m really disappointed about. I would have loved to represent my country at the Nations, but unfortunately that won’t be possible this year. The focus now is on recovery. I’ll have surgery around the middle of the month to fix my ankle, and then we’ll get straight into rehab with the aim of being fully fit for next season. I’m already really excited for 2027 and motivated to start working towards coming back strong.”

Rasmus Jorgensen - Team Manager: “It’s obviously disappointing for Kay and for the whole team to see his season finish this way, especially after the level he showed in recent races. His rookie MXGP season has already demonstrated just how competitive he can be in the premier class, and the performances at Lommel and Arnhem were a real reflection of that. The most important thing now is that he takes the time he needs to recover properly. We’ll support him fully through the surgery and rehabilitation process, and the focus is firmly on getting him back to 100 per cent for 2027. Kay is incredibly motivated, and we’re all looking forward to seeing him come back strong next season.”
