SHANGHAI (China), 12th September 2026 – The intense heat of the Chinese sun beat down onto the Shanghai International Off-Road Circuit today as the Qualifying Races were held for the Oriental Beauty Valley MXGP of China, in front of the immense new grandstand complex and race control buildings at the heavily-developed venue.

Despite a heavy fall in Free Practice that left him nursing a sore knee, newly-crowned World Champion Jeffrey Herlings extended his winning streak to 18 chequered flags in a row for Honda HRC Petronas, but he was chased all the way by the outgoing Champ, Romain Febvre, who is now assured of second place in the series for Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP.  Honda HRC Petronas again secured two of the top three spots, as Tom Vialle took third in his first appearance at this circuit.

The MX2 title chase is still to be decided, but Guillem Farres took a big step towards being able to clinch that title tomorrow for Triumph Racing Factory Team, as he did just enough to take his third Qualifying Race win of the season and extend his points lead still further.

The Spaniard was chased home by his two nearest challengers, however, with Sacha Coenen looking fast in second place for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and the second Triumph Racing Factory Team rider Camden McLellan was hot on their heels as the top three all crossed the line within 1.1 seconds of each other in a thrilling finish!

The Oriental Beauty Valley MXGP of China has only just begun, and has plenty more to offer on Sunday!

Having stayed unbeaten across all race and practice sessions since round 12 at Foxhills, Jeffrey Herlings again topped both Free and Time Practice timesheets, despite being pitched over the handlebars partway through the earlier session! Romain Febvre looked fast in taking second in both sessions, while Jan Pancar claimed third in the morning for TEM JP253 KTM Racing.  Febvre’s Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP stable-mate Pauls Jonass got to third in the Time Practice session, a hundredth of a second ahead of Red Bull Ducati Factory MXGP Team rider Calvin Vlaanderen, with Honda HRC Petronas’ second rider Tom Vialle going to the line in fifth.

As the two factory Kawasaki machines battled it out with the two Hondas down the start straight, it was Febvre who came out with the Holeshot, and although Jonass won out over Vialle, he just clipped the back wheel of Herlings to hit the ground instead of enjoying his good start!

As it was, Vialle was able to emerge in third ahead of Pancar and the MRT Racing Team Beta of Jago Geerts! The Belgian was quickly forced back to seventh, however, as the lone Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine of Andrea Adamo pushed him wide, opening the door for Vlaanderen to lift himself into sixth at the same time.  Jeremy Seewer was next along in eighth for Venrooy KTM Racing, ahead of the KTM Australia wildcard Dylan Walsh.

In the third quarter of the opening lap, Febvre got the right-hand corner wrong after the dragon’s back section, and hit some loose dirt on the outside that enabled Herlings to take a much cleaner inside line and take the lead! Meanwhile, an angry Jonass was blitzing through the wildcard riders to get to tenth by the end of the first full lap!  Of those wildcard riders, it has to be mentioned that Brian Hsu was able to take 12^th on the debut for the first Chinese machine to compete in MXGP, the JHL Factory Racing 350cc effort.

Jonass was able to get around Walsh in the waves on the second lap, and he chased after Seewer and the rest of the pack!  Herlings was unable to shake Febvre, and the #1 Kawasaki was particularly fast around that third sector, as the pair shared fastest lap times until lap nine, when Herlings started to eke away just a touch.  Febvre did fight back to within striking distance, but finally the verdict went to “The Bullet” by just over three seconds.

Vialle was all alone for most of the race in taking third place, but he draws to within 12 points of Adamo in their battle for what will be fourth in the Championship once they pass the absent Lucas Coenen. Adamo himself was unable to get close enough to Pancar to attempt a pass, finishing three and a half seconds down on the Slovenian.  The Italian had his hands full with Vlaanderen for most of the race, but he also had to contend with Geerts, who finished just over a second behind him in seventh.

In the end Jonass was unable to pass Seewer as they finished eighth and ninth, while Walsh scored his first point in the MXGP class for six years in tenth!

Herlings’ streak continues, but Febvre will be with him every step of the way tomorrow, and in a pressure-free situation this could be a very entertaining battle in MXGP!

Jeffrey Herlings: “Yeah, it was good. Considering this morning, I think it was quite good to still top every practice and lead almost every lap, so not too bad. After a good night of sleep I’ll be like new again tomorrow. The track is quite gnarly, it’s a bit easier than last year, last year there was a bit more rain and it was way hotter than this year. But I’m still enjoying it, and I’ll do the same thing tomorrow.”

Romain Febvre: “I felt really good. For once I got the start, and then I knew he was going to push me the first time to try to make the pass. Actually, where he passed me, I didn’t check the line properly on the sighting lap, I went there and I didn’t know where to go, I went outside and it was completely broken up, so he passed me there. But after that I was on it, I was feeling good and riding good. So hopefully the same start tomorrow, and then battle for the win.”

Tom Vialle: “I actually had a pretty bad start, I spun on the gate when it dropped. So that was pretty bad, but I made a good first turn and I was behind Romain the whole time. I made a mistake in one of the turns and then I lost the gap a little bit, and I kind of settled for tomorrow. P3 is okay for today and hopefully tomorrow we can push a little bit more.”

The three Championship contenders in MX2 shared the top three positions in each Practice session, with Sacha Coenen top in the morning session, ahead of the Triumph pairing of Camden McLellan and Guillem Farres. Camden would take the top spot in Time Practice, however, ahead of Guillem and Sacha, while Simon Längenfelder claimed fourth for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, and Liam Everts fifth for Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing.

In a day for fast-starting #1 plates, Längenfelder shot to the lead of the Qualifying Race ahead of Farres and Everts, but the Spaniard again showed his merciless early lap aggression by cutting inside the German to lead out of the second corner! McLellan went through the first few corners battling up into fourth, while Karlis Reisulis started well in fifth for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2!

The young Latvian had issues in the first full lap, however, and dropped to eleventh behind the Dixon Racing Team Kawasaki of Kay Karssemakers.  By the end of the first lap, Coenen had put a good pass on Everts to take third after railing the outside of a corner to enable a double jump that was tough on a 250! He had already put McLellan down to fifth, with the KTM Australia wildcard Byron Dennis a fine sixth ahead of the second Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 of Janis Reisulis!

Maxime Grau was eighth for Maddi Racing Honda ABF Italia, with Julius Mikula ninth for Ošicka KTM MX Team, fighting off the attentions of Karssemakers.

Coenen was his usual wild self as he closed in on Längenfelder, but couldn’t make the pass until lap six, using the same line that he had on Everts to great effect! It was a lap later that McLellan pressured Everts wide onto the start straight and dived to his inside to claim fourth.

Janis Reisulis had pushed to the inside of Dennis to take sixth on lap four, and the teenage Australian lost two places on the penultimate lap to slip to ninth ahead of Karlis Reisulis and Grau, who had fallen on lap seven!

Karssemakers had got the better of Mikula on lap five, and the Dutchman’s fine run of form continued as he finished seventh behind Janis Reisulis.

McLellan was able to use the same line that Coenen had used on Längenfelder to snatch third from the frustrated reigning Champ with four laps to go.  As Farres seemed to be saving energy at the front in the searing heat, his chasing Championship challengers closed in on the final laps!  Into the final corner they were almost one six-wheeled freight train, but the Spaniard held on in front of the Belgian and the South African, in that order, to get himself one step closer to the title chance available tomorrow!

To keep things alive for himself, Coenen needs to gain two points on Farres over the course of tomorrow’s races. If the Belgian doesn’t do that, then the Spaniard can clinch the title by gaining eight points or more on his teammate McLellan.

The trio look evenly matched on pace, so it could all be down to starting prowess and first lap aggression, the attributes you would associate with Coenen and Farres, or even the late race pace and fitness of McLellan!  It’s sure to be a fascinating contest, make sure you join us to find out what transpires!

Guillem Farres: “I’ve been feeling good. Pretty good start in second, made a quick pass in the second turn and from there I just managed it. It got a little bit sketchy at the beginning, but yeah, pretty good, good feeling. The whole team of Triumph Racing Factory is doing an amazing job and you guys can see, one, two in the Championship. Hopefully we can keep it going that way.”

After the Qualifying Races the action moved to the Paddock Show, and the two winners of the day, Jeffrey Herlings and Guillem Farres, were joined on stage by guest riders JHL Factory's Brian Hsu and JK Raicng duo Ivo Monticelli and Yang Jinyu. Full of smoke and music, the show played out in front of a great Chinese audience who left no doubt that they are getting more and more excited by this sport!

SHANGHAI (China) 11 September 2026 – The Oriental Beauty Valley MXGP of China was officially launched on Friday as the riders and teams of the FIM Motocross World Championship gathered at the West Bund Dream Center, set on the banks of the Huangpu River in the heart of Shanghai City, for a media event that captured all the excitement building ahead of the weekend.

The venue has been transformed into a space entirely dedicated to MXGP, with an impressive set up stretching from a practice area and ramp for children to a line of food carts and a spectacular stage, where fans from the area will be able to take part in an MXGP Watch Party throughout the event.

The riders began the event with a tour of the site and smiling and admiring the young children practicing on the electric bike in front of their heroes, before heading towards a signing session, where a crowd of eager fans was already waiting. Among those present were Honda HRC Petronas' 2026 MXGP World Champion Jeffrey Herlings and his teammate Tom Vialle, together with the Triumph Racing Factory duo and current top two in MX2, Guillem Farres and Camden McLellan.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Andrea Adamo and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing's Liam Everts were also in attendance, alongside Red Bull Ducati Factory MXGP's Calvin Vlaanderen and Beddini Racing Ducati Factory MX2's Ferruccio Zanchi. Venrooy KTM Racing's Jeremy Seewer, Team Honda Motoblouz SR Motul's Kevin Horgmo and Osicka MX Team's Julius Mikula completed the European contingent, while the Australian duo of Byron Dennis and Dylan Walsh added their own following to the occasion. Completing the line up were Brian Hsu and Li Yuzhang of JHL Factory Racing, representing the Chinese manufacturer making its debut in MXGP.

Following the signing session, the riders were presented with gifts by the organisers, a set of plush toys offered as a gesture of welcome, before gathering once more for an ultimate family photo.

The atmosphere was joyful throughout and showed once again that China is welcoming MXGP with open arms, delivering amazing structures and a set up designed for the most enjoyable experience possible during media events.

The Chinese round will return in 2027, moving to May and landing inside the Labour Day break, one of the biggest holiday periods of the year in the country. It is a clear sign of how quickly motocross is growing its reach in China, with an increasing number of fans following the championship and taking a genuine interest in the riders themselves.

With the Chinese Grand Prix now officially kicked off, all eyes turn to Saturday's races, which are becoming so important in defining the outcome of the championships. In MXGP, Herlings has already secured the crown, but second and third in the standings are still to be defined, while in MX2 everything remains to be decided as Farres and McLellan prepare to resume their battle.

SHANGHAI (China) 11 September 2026 – The 2026 MXGP FIM Motocross World Championships arrives in the Far East this weekend, as the Shanghai International Off-Road Circuit plays host to the penultimate GP of the season, round 18, The Oriental Beauty Valley MXGP of China, for the fourth event of its kind in this country, and the local fans are expected to pack out the grandstands of this highly-developed, purpose-built facility that is a massive testament to the commitment of the organisers to making this event a success.

Newly crowned MXGP World Champion Jeffrey Herlings is in no mood to let up the pace, as he plans to celebrate his 32nd birthday in style this weekend! He took the GP win here last year, as he did in 2019, so he will be as formidable as ever, but Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser are fighting over second in the series and eager to score their first GP win of the campaign!

There will also be a historic first entry for JHL Factory Racing, as Brian Hsu leads the charge for the first ever Chinese manufacturer to compete in the Motocross World Championships!

The MX2 title could be decided this weekend, as Spaniard Guillem Farres holds a 50-point lead over his Triumph Racing teammate Camden McLellan, with last year's China winner Sacha Coenen now third in the standings. Farres will have to make up points on them both across the three races in order to make history for the British manufacturer with its first world crown!

For Chinese viewers, the development races from H&H Sports will be broadcast LIVE amongst the coverage of the World Championship classes, featuring rising Chinese talent in both the 85cc and 250cc classes.

The entire weekend's races will be broadcast LIVE on MXGP-TV.com, with the Oriental Beauty Valley MXGP of China brought to you by Paul Malin, Lisa Leyland, and Ben Rumbold, while Saturday's Time Practice sessions are also being broadcasted LIVE with Paul and Lisa.

SHANGHAI (China) 10th September 2026 – Infront Moto Racing, together with the FIM, is pleased to announce the provisional calendar of the 2027 FIM Motocross World Championship. Twenty Grands Prix spread across four continents will decide the MXGP and MX2 world titles, with the season opening in Andalucia on 28 February and the year closing at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations at Assen on 10 October.

In the beautiful region of Andalucia, Almonte will open proceedings with the MXGP of Andalucia, the Spanish venue that joined the calendar in 2026 and now takes on the role of season opener for both MXGP and MX2, along with WMX and EMX125 on the programme. Two weeks later the paddock crosses the Atlantic for the MXGP of Argentina on 14 March, as the much-appreciated venue of Bariloche welcomes MXGP for a second consecutive year.

The Paddock then comes back to Europe for a strong spring period. The MXGP of Italy on 28 March at Montevarchi, is directly followed by the MXGP of Sardegna at Riola Sardo on 4 April. Then the MXGP of Spain on 18 April, where the location is also to be announced, and the MXGP of Trentino at Pietramurata on 25 April.

May opens away from Europe. The MXGP of China returns to Shanghai on 2 May, moving from its September date into a spring slot that places one of the fastest growing markets in world motocross at the heart of the season. The Grand Prix also falls within the Labour Day holiday, one of the biggest public holidays in the Chinese calendar and a period of national celebration that brings the country together. To race in Shanghai across that weekend is a great honour for the championship and promises an exceptional atmosphere at the circuit.

The European core of the calendar then runs from late May to the end of June, with the MXGP of Portugal on 23 May at a venue to be announced, the MXGP of France on 30 May returns to Saint Jean d’Angély, the Charente-Maritime venue that last staged a Grand Prix in 2025, the MXGP of Latvia at Kegums on 13 June, the MXGP of Germany at Teutschenthal on 20 June and the MXGP of Great Britain at Foxhills on 27 June. In Foxhills, the presence of EMX250 was an essential part of the discussions around the British round. Adding the class was an important decision and a vital one for the future of British motocross, giving the country’s most talented young riders the opportunity to race at home in front of their own crowd.

A pause in July gives teams and riders a genuine mid season reset, and it is during that period that the FIM Junior Motocross World Championship takes place at Pärnu in Estonia on 18 July. Racing resumes with two of the most demanding weekends of the year, the MXGP of Czech Republic at Loket on 25 July and the MXGP of Flanders at Lommel on 1 August.

The run to the finish opens with the MXGP of Sweden at Uddevalla on 15 August and the MXGP of the Netherlands at Arnhem on 22 August, before the MXGP of Türkiye at Afyonkarahisar on 5 September. A further Grand Prix is scheduled for 12 September, with the host country and venue to be announced, and the MXGP of Australia at Darwin follows on 19 September. The championship then closes back in Europe, the MXGP of Switzerland on 3 October, at a venue to be confirmed, bringing down the curtain on the season one week before the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in The Netherlands at Assen.

THE SUPPORTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship contests six rounds in 2027. WMX opens alongside the MXGP of Andalucia on 28 February and then races at the MXGP of Italy, the MXGP of Germany at Teutschenthal, the MXGP of the Netherlands at Arnhem, the MXGP of Türkiye at Afyonkarahisar and the MXGP of Australia at Darwin, where the title will be settled.

The FIM Europe classes again form the backbone of the support programme. EMX125 presented by FMF Racing opens its campaign alongside MXGP in Andalucia on 28 February and races eleven times, while EMX250 begins in Sardegna on 4 April and races twelve times, both series concluding at the MXGP of Switzerland on 3 October. EMX Open joins in at Lommel on 1 August, and Loket hosts the EMX65, EMX85 and EMX2T classes on 25 July. The Motocross of European Nations is scheduled for 12 September at a venue to be confirmed.

The season is completed by the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations at Assen on 10 October. The Dutch venue last staged the event in 2019, when the Netherlands won on home soil in front of a capacity crowd, and its return is one of the most anticipated dates of the 2027 season. The Yamaha BLU CRU programme will again feature on the Nations weekend.
