Liam Everts and the Monster Energy FIM MXoN

The motocross world got excited on Sunday, with the greatest Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations rider of all time, Stefan Everts heard his son Liam, will represent Team Belgium at this event. For the family it is a third generation of Everts racing for their country, as Harry Everts rode for Team Belgium in the 1970’s and 80’s.

While Liam Everts is just 17 years of age, he has shown in the last month that he is very quickly reaching world level, and last Sunday beat world MX2 champion Tim Vialle in a Belgian international. As for finding out about racing for Team Belgium, the teenager is excited.

“I found out a few days ago,” Everts said. Johan (Boonen - Belgian team manager) called and said Jago (Geerts) couldn’t race. I think it is good for the experience, to also race with the 450s and it is something to look forward to, it is one of the biggest events. I am looking forward to it. We are not the strongest team I know that and that is normal now, I will just go there and race for myself, get some experience and learn some race craft against the GP guys.”

As for his father Stefan, the multiple MXoN winner feels his son is ready for such an event and feels it is a great experience for somebody so young. Stefan actually had his first ever MXoN when he was also 17 back in 1990.

“I felt comfortable with him going, “Everts said. “Ready for a podium I am not sure. The last weeks, he has made big progress. It is nice for Liam that they took him for example Strijbos who has been there many years and for Liam let’s hope he has a big future ahead of him and he can start riding with the best riders out there. We didn’t expect it, when we heard the rumour and then Johan Boonen talked to us a few weeks ago, that in case Jago doesn’t ride, if Liam would like to ride. We said yes, for sure he wants to do that. A few days before last weekend’s race in Belgium, he asked us again. For Liam, it is awesome. I did my first Nations when I was 17 years old in Sweden at the Vimmerby track, and now Liam is 17 and will do his first at Mantova. That is really cool, really cool for our memory.”

So, for the sports purists, the chance to see another Everts at this magnificent event will be one of the highlights and we all know if he is anything like his father and grandfather, Liam will make an impression amongst the best riders in the world.

The Defending Champions: Holland

While this year’s Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations will not be run at the end of the season, the interest from the major teams is still very strong. Already the defending champions, the Netherlands have named their team with Jeffrey Herlings, Glenn Coldenhoff and Roan van De Moosdijk, and while Van De Moosdijk is currently injured, he is expected to be back a month before the Nations, which will give him time to prepare. Even if the Kawasaki rider can’t be ready, the Dutch have 17-year-old Kay de Wolf also in hot form and excited to race for his country.

There is no doubt, Coldenhoff has some pressure as his 1-1-1-1 results from the last two Nations at Redbud and Assen make him the hot favourite to lead Holland to their second victory in the history of the event. Even with a rider like Herlings in the team, that determination to continue to prove his worth at this event never waivers for the always friendly and positive Coldenhoff.

“After my results the last three years,” Coldenhoff said. “In Redbud and Assen, it is very special. To represent your country, that is always special for me. It is a completely different race schedule what we are used to, and I am a very proud Dutchman, and I will always race for my country. I always want to do well for our country, and we are a very small country, so it is a big challenge. I felt it was such a shame we missed out on having that race last year, because we have never had such a strong team with Jeffrey, myself and Roan, or even Kay. We could have had a strong team last year and we will have this year. If I was first in the MXGP championship or 20th, I would go to the Nations. It is a special race format, and I really like that about it. I personally think they should keep it how it is and how it was, and I am really looking forward to this year’s race. Jeffrey is riding and while Roan is injured, we hope he is fit, but we will see, we have a great reserve in Kay if we need him.”

Herlings, like his good friend and countryman Coldenhoff never thought for a second about not competing for his country and trying to regain the Chamberlain Trophy. The rider many say is the fastest in the planet is still looking for his first ever 1-1 at the event and the sand of Mantova seems like a good place to go for the perfect day.

“I mean,” Herlings said. “For some countries, like Slovenia, it is hard for that team to win, so it is difficult, but for Team Holland or Team America, or whatever, we have a chance of winningit. With my team, with Holland, I hope we can win it and I will go. The ultimate goal is the double. With Glenn, Roan and I, there is no weak link. So, it looks promising.”

So now, with teams being selected, and the order of favouritism being handed out, you get a feeling the orange army will be out in force to witness what could be a double victory in this, the toughest and most exciting event in the motocross season.
