MANTOVA (Italy) 25 September 2021 – The 74^th edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations saw the qualifying heats today as 31 nations took to the circuit here in Mantova, Italy.

The qualifying heats today decided which 19 teams will progress into MXoN races and which will have to battle it out in the B final tomorrow morning. While more importantly for the teams chasing the Chamberlain Trophy this year, the sessions today decided the gate pick for tomorrow’s main races.

The start will be vital here in Mantova and defending champions, Team Netherlands will have the advantage tomorrow of lining up first as between all three riders the team scored four points, while Team France will line up second with five and home heroes Team Italy on five points also in third.

While it was Team Netherlands who qualifyied best as a nation, the qualification race wins went to Antonio Cairoli (MXGP), Tom Vialle (MX2) and Jeffrey Herlings (Open).

MXGP was the first qualifying session to take place. As the gate dropped, it was Team Great Britain’s Ben Watson who got out in front from the beginning as he led Team Latvia’s Karlis Sabulis, Benoit Paturel of Team France and David Goosen of the Republic of South Africa.

Antonio Cairoli of Team Italy and Glenn Coldenhoff of Team Netherlands started further down the field in sixth and seventh position. Though Coldenhoff was able to find his way around the Italian to steal his position.

Watson then continued to lead as he stretched out the gap to 5.304 seconds over Sabulis and Paturel, as Dylan Wright from Team Canada found himself in fourth place.

Goosen then dropped down to eighth place as Coldenhoff got Wright for fourth place. The Dutchman then had Sabulis and Paturel right in front of him, as he was able to pass Latvia’s Sabulis for third. Cairoli did the same as he followed the Yamaha rider.

Watson then set the fastest lap of the race as he continued his charge out in front, this time 10.034 seconds in front of Paturel who was doing his best to keep Coldenhoff and Cairoli behind him. Both Coldenhoff and Cairoli struggled to get around the Frenchman for quite a few laps.

After biting his time, Cairoli took third from Coldenhoff and then set his sights on Paturel for second. Not long after he was able to find a way past which sent the Italian crowd wild.

With four minutes plus two laps to go, Watson was 8.117 seconds in front, but that gap quickly came down as Cairoli put on a charge for the win.

With just three laps to go, Cairoli closed in on Watson to take first place from the Brit and go on to win the MXGP qualifying heat. Watson finished second ahead of Coldenhoff who was third.

Antonio Cairoli: “We want to be on the podium, that’s the goal, I was not feeling so well but it’s enough to ride good. I hope to have a better feeling tomorrow, I think tomorrow will be a difficult race, especially the second heat. I feel a little bit stiff now, even today in the qualifying race the pain was there. This race is important but also the world championship is still important for me and I was really happy that I could race here. This comeback was difficult but it was necessary, so I’m really looking forward to tomorrow’s races”.

In the MX2 qualifying race, it was Team Estonia’s Jorgen-Mathias Talviku who led the rest of the field with Team France’s Tom Vialle, Team Austria’s Rene Hofer and Camden Mc Lellan of Team Republic of South Africa just behind.

Team Netherland’s Roan van de Moosdijk was dealt a blow as he went down in the first corner and had to fight back through the pack. As Vialle wasted no time to pass Talviku for first position, while Team Italy’s Mattia Guadagnini was looking to fight back from 17^th place.

The battle for third intensified as Talviku was looking to defend his spot from Mc Lellan, Team Great Britain’s Conrad Mewse and Team Sweden’s Isak Gifting. And it was Mewse the first of the riders to make a pass as he got himself into third after passing both Talviku and Mc Lellan.

Mewse then continued to surprise us lap after lap, as he consistently set the fastest times of the race. Though it was Vialle who was leading the way and was 5.404 seconds ahead of Hofer. But as Mewse made his way around the circuit here in Mantova at great speed his gap to the leaders started to shrink as he got onto the back of Hofer and started to fight for second position.

But also charging through the field was Guadagnini who made some vital passes in the final laps to get up to fourth place, behind Mewse who couldn’t get around Hofer, as Vialle took the win.

Tom Vialle: “I’m feeling pretty good, I have a good felling in the warm-up on the track, this morning was little bit sketchy, so I didn’t get so many risks before the qualification race. Then I had a great start and I was leading, so I was pretty good on the bike, everything was smooth, and now we have a second position for tomorrow, which is really nice, we have a great position and now we are very happy”.

The final qualifying race of the day was of the Open category and maybe the most intense as it was the final shot for the teams to get the best result possible and secure a great spot for tomorrow’s races.

As the gate dropped, it was Team Denmark’s Bastian Boegh Damm who took the holeshot ahead of Mathys Boisrame of Team France and South Africa’s Tristan Purdon. Latvia’s Toms Macuks was third, while Team Netherland’s Jeffrey Herlings started down in 19^th place.

Purdon then crashed out of third, as Team Great Britain’s Shaun Simpson struggled down in around 30^th, eventually managing to get himself back to 20^th.

Team Lithuania’s Arminas Jasikonis found himself battling with Team Portugal’s Hugo Basaula, with the Lithuanian coming out on top to take fifth place. Herlings was also making moves as he was up in sixth by lap four.

Boisrame then took over the lead from Boegh Damm, who was coming under pressure from Macuks and Team Germany’s Henry Jacobi. After finishing his way around the Dane, Macuks was putting on a charge for Boisrame as he was making his intentions of going after the win clear.

And just behind the leaders, Jasikonis was up in fourth with Herlings just behind him as the pair caught onto the back of Macuks. The Latvian was able to hold off the pair for a few moments, but inventively the pair were through to take third and fourth places.

Further down the field, Team Italy’s Alessandro Lupino was having a strong ride in ninth place and eventually finished eighth.

On lap seven we saw a change for the lead as Jacobi was able to find a way past Boisrame and next to do the same were Jasikonis and Herlings. By the following lap Herlings was able to get past the tall Lithuanian and set his sights on the win.

Jacobi really made Herlings work for it and with just four laps to go we saw another change for the lead, with the Dutchman now in the driving seat.

In the end it was Herlings with the win, Jacobi second and Jasikonis taking third which put Team Lithuania through into the MXoN races for the second time in the nation’s history.

Jeffrey Herlings: “We are first for tomorrow so that is good, way better than expected as we had a tough time starting from 29^th position all three of us. The good thing was that our main competition also were on the outside. From my side, I won the qualifying race and with Glenn’s third place we managed four points so overall we are first which is great for us”.

Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations Mantova 

MANTOVA (Italy) 25 September 2021 – After the announcement of Antonio Cairoli’s retirement at the end of the 2021 racing season, a special press conference was held in Mantova, Italy at the 2021 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, to celebrate the incredible achievements of the 9-time World Champion.

Present for the occasion was Infront Moto Racing President Giuseppe Luongo and FIM President Jorge Viegas who presented Cairoli with a Lifetime Award and announced that the number #222 will be retired from the FIM Motocross World Championship, meaning that Cairoli will hold on to this racing number forever.

Over the span of his incredible 18-year racing career, Cairoli has racked up nine world titles, 177 podiums and 93 Grand Prix victories and remains as one of the top title contenders in the 2021 title chase. This weekend the Sicilian will chase his first ever Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations victory with Team Italy.

In honour of his achievements, Infront Moto Racing together with the FIM decided to retire the #222 from competition which Cairoli has worn consistently since 2007.

Infront Moto Racing President Giuseppe Luongo: “Antonio has made the history of MXGP, not only with his numerous titles, but also with his behaviour, with his respect and with his fairness, he is an example for all the young.  We will miss Antonio on the race track, but hopefully we will not miss him in our world where he will continue to offer his experience and knowledge to the next generations. Antonio, thank you for all you have offered and you continue to offer to Motocross.”

FIM President Jorge Viegas: “What else can I say. This kind of champions is what we work for. When Tony, not the rider but the man, is leaving us we are losing a member of the family. But Tony will stay with us for sure, I don’t know what he will do but of course he will stay with us. And I’m pleased to stay, in our hearts, thank you for all that you gave to us and please stay as you are, a great man. Thank you”. 

Pit Beirer, KTM Motorsport Director: “We’ve had the privilege to be part of Tony’s story since 2010. We know how much we value him as a person and as one of the best riders the sport has seen, and it special that the rest of MXGP feel the same way with this retirement of his number. #222 belongs to Tony. He owned MXGP for a time when he changed the game and brought so much dominance to the championship. He raised it to a new level for riders while also showing a passion for racing that allowed him to have such a long and amazing career. Thanks to Infront Motor Racing and to the FIM for making this gesture. It’s not often a remarkable athlete like Tony comes along.”

Antonio Cairoli: “Thank you everybody for this nice press conference, I really didn’t expect it. Here in this paddock, I think I made a lot of friends and I think everybody likes me because I am who I am in and outside of the track. I wish I could stay longer but my body is not recovering as well as in the past race after race. I think it’s time to do something else but to stay of course inside the paddock and help other kids to grow and to follow the same dream I had when I was a kid. Thanks to everybody for this amazing journey, I am really happy to be here, and I hope to continue to help MXGP and all the kids that are dreaming”.

Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations Mantova 

MANTOVA (Italy) 24 September 2021 – The 2021 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations has officially kick-started in Mantova, Italy, with the official press conferences and other media activities.

The world’s most exciting race is finally back after coronavirus complications prevent the event from going ahead in 2020. The 74^th edition promises to be one of the exciting ones to date as Team Netherlands will look to defend their 2019 title, while Team Italy will fight for victory on home soil.

A total of 31 countries are set to compete in this year’s event, so the fight to make it into the B final is bound to be fierce as only 20 nations will line-up for the main races on Sunday.

Friday’s activities officially began with the welcome press conference with Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo and FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela sharing some words about this weekend’s events.

Infront Moto Racing CEO David Luongo: “It’s fantastic to be back at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, I think it was missing for everybody last year. Already the experience of the Motocross of Nations is different as soon as you pass the gate. It’s a different atmosphere, it’s a different tension, the paddock is full of colours and different nationalities. It’s a very special event, the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations is the biggest and most popular off-road event of the year so everybody is very excited. You can see here the trophies, this race has a big history, so it’s fantastic to have it back. I want to thank all of the federations, the teams, the riders that are attending the event. We have fantastic riders such as Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings that are fighting for the title in MXGP, but they still want to fight for their country, and they are very into this event. It’s fantastic for all the fans. I have to thank the FIM and all the federations for the great collaboration. Mantova is a very well-known venue and very compact, the atmosphere this year will be very exciting, so I wish for all of you a great event, good racing and let’s start have it started, thank you”

FIM/CMS Director Antonio Alia Portela: “When you come to an event like this, you can smell it in the air that there is something different. It’s something that you feel in your heart, to support your nation, riders are together as a team, it’s something that makes the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations a very special event. We are back after one year’s break, it was really sad to postpone the event last year and the good thing is that the answer to this event is great, as you can see there are more than 30 nations coming to this race. I wish to thank Infront Moto Racing for all the effort that it has taken to organise this event, the Italian Federation for bringing it to Italy and preparing the good facilities, the track and all the officials are excited to be here and have the event running in a smooth way. We also have to thank all the federations around the globe who have sent their teams to participate here. Having said that, I wish you all the best in these two days of racing”.

Following the welcome of the officials, a special press conference took place to present the top six nations. This included Team Netherlands, Team Italy, Team Belgium, Team Great Britain, Team France and Team Germany who shared their expectations for the weekend.

Glenn Coldenhoff of the defending Champions Team Netherlands will run the #1 plate this weekend as he, together with Jeffrey Herlings and Roan van De Moosdijk will look to defend their title from Assen in 2019.  

Glenn Coldenhoff: “I’m always proud to represent my country and obviously the last couple of years we have had a strong team and we know that and in Assen getting the trophy with Team Netherlands was really special, and we made history. Coming here with the #1, #2 and #3 gives a little more pressure but I feel like for this year there’s only one place that counts and that’s the win”.

Patrice Assendelft Team Netherlands Manager: “I am very proud that we were able to select these three riders. All three are very proud to fight for their country in the middle of a very busy season so I am very grateful for that. We have to put our best foot forward and on Sunday night we will see how the flags are”.

Meanwhile, Team Italy’s Antonio Cairoli, Alessandro Lupino and Mattia Guadagnini are big favourites to take the win here on home soil in Mantova and it is a big motivation for the team to do their best.

Antonio Cairoli: “I’m really happy to be here representing team Italy. I wasn’t sure until two days ago if I could take part in the race because of the hard-hit last week which meant I couldn’t race in Riola which for me was a big bummer for the championship because for me it was something important. But of course, I will never miss the Motocross of Nations and ride if I could and do everything in my power to ride. We are here and of course I am not in my best shape, but I will try to do my best again, to bring Italy on the podium and hopefully win this race which would be very good for me, for the team and everybody in Italy... Of course, that’s why we are here and that’s why I push a lot to be ready for the fight. It’s a team event and we know we are a strong team together. Of course, I would be happier if I could be 100% because one point is for sure better that two or three but we will do our best, we will see how it goes tomorrow. We will start slow tomorrow but I will give everything I have for the race on Sunday” he added.

Then it was time to introduce this year’s teams from the 31 nations that will take part in the battle for the Chamberlain Trophy this weekend, before starting with a special parade of the YZ bLU cRU 65, 85 and 125 riders along with the Junior e-Motocross series participants. Each country showcased the three riders who will represent them at the 74^thMonster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations as they took a tour on the start line in front of an enthusiastic crowd of Italian fans.

The Team Presentation started with the 31^st team which was Team Bulgaria and wrapped up with the defending champions Team Netherlands and concluded with an epic display from Team Italy who were supported by an enthusiastic crowd of Italian fans who hope that the trio of Antonio Cairoli, Alessandro Lupino and Mattia Guadagnini will stand atop the podium at the end of the races on Sunday.

The evening was finished off with the ballot to determine the starting grid for tomorrow’s racing, with Team South Africa taking the first gate pick, while Team Latvia and Team Croatia will line up second and third for the qualifying heats. Meanwhile Team Italy and Team Netherlands will go to the gate 28^th and 29^th respectively.

Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations Mantova 

MANTOVA (Italy) 23 September 2021 – The time has come for the 74^th edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations as the biggest off-road race of the season returns for 2021!

This time, the event heads to Mantova, Italy as the hard sand circuit will have the honour of hosting the prestigious event for the very first time.

The 2021 edition will be special as Team Italy will fight to win the Chamberlain Trophy on home soil, Team Netherlands will look to defend their 2019 title and add a second victory to their name, while Team Great Britain will chase their fourth consecutive podium. But of course, as is usual, the Monster Energy FIM MXoN can deliver the unexpected so you must watch to find out what happens.

TV coverage from the Italian circuit will be broadcasted via MXGP’s traditional TV partners, including RAI Sport HD who will be onside and will provide their own commentary in Italian. Additionally, Sky Sports Italia will also be in Mantova to follow the Italian Team as part of a documentary following the success of the Maglia Azzurra.

Fans in France can enjoy the races on La Chaine l’Equipe from 3pm and also on Automoto TV la Chaine, while fans elsewhere in Europe can catch the action on Eurosport.

Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations Mantova 

MANTOVA (Italy) 22 September 2021 – The biggest off road event of the season is back! This weekend will see the return of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations as Mantova, Italy, will play the host of the 74^th edition of the event.

Last year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, motocross fans all over the world were deprived of the legendary race, but this weekend will be a weekend to celebrate as 33 nations will send their best three riders to Mantova, where they will fight for pride and glory, in the hope of bringing home the coveted Chamberlain Trophy.

Mantova, located in the north of Italy, is a modern take on a sand circuit, featuring a series of man-made jumps, while the sand sits atop a hard base, which makes this track different to other sand circuits.

While Mantova has hosted the FIM Motocross World Championship since the beginning of the 90’s, this will be the first time that the Italian venue will have the honour of holding the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations.

Team Netherlands will line-up in Mantova as the defending champions following their maiden win in Assen back in 2019. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff and F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk will fight to repeat the team’s success and add a second victory for the nation. Herlings is on great form as he currently leads the MXGP World Championship standings, while Coldenhoff has been settling in well with his new team and has plenty of individual overall victories at the event which will no doubt set him up nicely for this year too. For Van De Moosdijk this will be the first Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, with the youngster keen on performing well for the team.

Netherlands are one of the favourites but another team that will be looking to take Chamberlain Trophy are home heroes Team Italy. The team, made up of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, Mattia Guadagnini and Alessandro Lupino of MRT Racing Team KTM is one of the strongest line-ups of the event. Despite a heavy crash during the MXGP of Sardegna, the 9-time world champion will line-up for the races this weekend to represent his nation in the hope of adding another very improtant victory to his already impressive statistics, as Cairoli is yet to win a Monster Energy FIM MXoN with Team Italy. Guadagnini who is battling for the MX2 world title and Lupino who has had some incredible results in MXGP this season perfectly complete the team which has a real chance to go for gold this year.

Team Great Britain headed by SS24 KTM MXGP’s Shaun Simpson, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Ben Watson and Conrad Mewse of Hitachi KTM fuelled by Milwaukee are another strong contender as the squad will aim for a podium finish for the fourth consecutive time after finishing on the box in Matterley Basin, Red Bud and Assen.

There’s also Team France made up of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle, F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Mathys Boisrame and Team Honda SR Motoblouz’s Benoit Paturel as well as Team Germany with Max Nagl, SM Honda Racing’s Henry Jacobi and Simon Längenfelder of DIGA PROCROSS GASGAS FACTORY RACING and Team Denmark with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen, Mikkel Haarup of F&H Kawasaki Racing and WZ Racing KTM’s Bastian Beogh-Damm who are a real threat this year also.

Team Estonia are another notable team to mention with Gert Krestinov, Harri Kullas and Jorgen-Matthias Talviku representing the nation. Both Krestinov and Kullas are experienced Monster Energy MXoN riders who will no doubt use their experience to bring Team Estonia the highest team classification.

While this season Team Belgium will feature some fresh new faces as Liam Everts of Liamski KTM, Brent Van Doninck of Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing and Cyrcil Genot will represent the multi-time Monster Energy MXoN winning team.

A total of 33 teams will take part in the 74^th edition of the event that is set to be more intense than ever before. Meanwhile Saturday will see the YZ bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup 65 and 85 races, as well as the traditional qualifying heats and the brand-new Junior eMotocross session one, while Sunday will see the YZ bLU cRU FIM Europe Cup 125 action followed by the second session of the Junior eMotocross category and of course the MXoN main races that will determine the outcome of the 74th edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations!

Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations Mantova 

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing riders Jeffrey Herlings and Tom Vialle have dominated the sport in the last month, with three Grand Prix victories each from the last three rounds, two each in Turkey and one last weekend in Sardinia.

Now these two super faster riders will direct their attention to the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations where they will try and win the Chamberlain Trophy for their countries. Herlings racing for defending champions The Netherlands and Vialle for the multiple winners from the last decade Team France.

Herlings was as mentioned part of the Dutch team that won the event in 2019, the last time the event was held, and the 26-year-old is excited to try and pick up his countries second win ever at this event. He also knows that several teams will be looking to try and do the same thing.

“Obviously,” Herlings said. “It is Holland vs Italy I think, but many teams could be in with a shot, you never know with this event, which I understand. Every time you go out on a bike it is a risk and for sure this race the risk is a little higher, because you are riding for your country and the honour is high. It is the biggest race of the year normally and I don’t want to miss it.”

There was no place Herlings would rather be than at Mantova in Italy this coming weekend and with two strong team-mates you get the feeling the four-time World motocross champion is pretty confident he can help The Netherlands to the top of the podium come Sunday afternoon. If he is excited to race, isn’t a question.

“Yes, of course I am excited to race, because I have a team that can win. Maybe if I had a team that couldn’t win it would be different. We have Glenn (Coldenhoff) and Roan (Van De Moosdijk), so we can win it, but it is a shame other guys are not racing it.”

As for Vialle, it will be his first appearance for Team France, and despite having a father who raced back in the 1990s, this will only be his second time to be at this event live. The defending MX2 World champion attended the event in 2019 as a young fan, and now, in his first time racing he expects to enjoy the experience.

“I think it is good to race as much as I can and I will fight for this race,” Vialle said. “It is nice to race for the country, with the gear, the helmet, we have some good ideas for this race. It will be less pressure than for a Grand Prix.  My father did it four or five teams with team France and I think they got on the podium once. I never went to watch the race. My father stopped racing before I was born and the only one Nations I have been to, was the one in Assen. I had watched GP many times, but I never watched the Nations live before, just on television.”

So now, as all the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations teams make their way to Mantova in Italy, we can be sure the two hottest riders in MXGP and MX2 will be two of the stars when the races are finished on Sunday. Where they will finish and how their individual results will be we will find out soon enough.

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 14 September 2021 - Infront Moto Racing and the FIM are pleased to share the official entry list for the 2021 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations! Take a look at the official list featuring 33 countries that will be represented in Mantova, Italy on the 24^th, 25^th and 26^th of September.

This year Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff and F&H Kawasaki rider Roan Van De Moosdijk will look to defend Team Netherlands’ title from 2019 and to add to their growing history, while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli together with teammate Mattia Guadagnini and MRT Racing Team KTM’s Alessandro Lupino will look to chase their first joint title for Team Italy in front of their home crowd.

Everybody is waiting for the Motocross of Nations 2021; the last year due to the covid situation the Nations didn’t took place and this season will take place in Mantova the next 26 September. Antonio Cairoli, 9 time World Champion will be the Capitain of the Team Italy: Cairoli is still fighting for the MXGP title in the 2021 season with many consistent races with 1 GP win and many podiums. Mattia Guadagnini already got an important results with the Maglia Azzurra back in 2019 when he won the Junior World Chmpionship and now is in the second position in the MX2 Championship. Alessandro Lupino is having a really good season with solid results and many finish in the top 10 showing a good speed.

I want to thank our riders because even if the Nations is in the middle of the season, they accepted to be part of the team and represent Italy. Watching the MXGP and MX2 Championship we can say that we have one of the best team of the nation and I’m sure that our riders will fight to get the best result as they already showed in the MXGP and MX2 season”

Thomas Traversini, Team Coach FMI: “Our team is really competitive for the Nation. Once again our riders showed how important they feel being part of the Italian Team and wear the Maglia Azzurra being available to represent Italy. Cairoli and Lupino are used to this competition and they ready. Guadagnini is at his first time at the Nation but he did already other International competition with the national team. All the riders have really good relationship and I’m sure the group will be super compact and focus on the main goal.
