Nancy van de Ven Takes First Victory of 2018 at Lombardia

OTTOBIANO (Lombardia, Italy) 17 June 2018 - The Women of Motocross took to the Ottobiano circuit this weekend for the 4th round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship. The racing spanned across both Saturday and Sunday with technical, sandy, and hot conditions. Taking the overall win for her first time this year was Nancy van de Ven.

The Italian fans proudly watched as the defending champion, MXFONTARACING Yamaha’s Kiara Fontanesi, fought her way to the podium at the home race against a handful of strong competitors. The spectator hill alongside the circuit was full of passionate and cheering fans both days adding to the close racing and Championship battles.

Saturday’s Race 1 was led by the first round winner and former red plate holder Larissa Papenmeier but she was closely followed by Fontanesi. Current points leader, Altherm JCR Yamaha’s Courtney Duncan was 3rd and Nancy van de Ven was right behind. At the end of the second lap however it was Fontanesi who took the lead from Papenmeier.

Duncan fell early in the race and had to work her way back forward but by lap 9 was closing on Van de Ven who felt the pressure and pushed to second in an attempt to put Papenmeier as a buffer. Duncan however not only passed Papenmeier but also found her way around Van de Ven.  Duncan then charged up to the lead of Fontanesi and made a pass but Fontanesi was able to retake the spot then take the home race win over Duncan, Van de Ven, and Papenmeier with Shana van der Vlist in 5th.

Sunday’s Race 2 was the first event on the track and while temperatures in general where higher, the earlier timing of the race helped keep the women cool. When the gate fell it was again Papenmeier who rocketed off of the start with all the contenders just behind.

Papenmeier had Duncan chasing her along with Van de Ven and Fontanesi in the top 4 the first lap. The 3 Yamaha riders pursued the Suzuki of Papenmeier for the first 5 laps but all three were able to shift the German back on lap 6.

With Van de Ven in the lead Duncan kept applying the pressure and drove the pair forward creating a gap over Fontanesi and Papenmeier. Duncan was unable to pass Van de Ven in the end as the #85 took the race win with Duncan second, Fontanesi 3rd, and Papenmeier 4th. In the Overall Van de Ven’s 3-1 topped Fontanesi’s 1-3, and Duncan’s 2-2 while Papenmeier’s consistent 4-4 resulted in 4th and Shana van der Vlist’s 5-6 took the final spot in the top 5. Duncan will head to the next round in Assen with a 21 point championship lead.

Courtney Duncan Dominates Deutschland

TEUTSCHENTHAL (Germany) 20 May 2018 - The FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship’s 3rd round of 2018 played out over 2 days on the German circuit of Teutschenthal. Altherm JCR Yamaha’s Courtney Duncan faced tough competition and a challenging track this Saturday and Sunday but provided a masterclass for her competitors taking double race wins.

The WMX round of Germany was held along side the MXGP of Germany’s MXGP and MX2 races on the classic motocross track with tens of thousands of fans witness the action.

Coming into the weekend Courtney Duncan led the Championship with 2 rounds complete and at the drop of gate for Race 1 on Saturday she would take the Holeshot. Duncan battled with her fellow Yamaha mounted competitors such as MXFONTARACING Yamaha’s Kiara Fontanesi.

Fontanesi, who is the defending WMX Champion, took the lead from Duncan before the end of the first complete lap. Duncan chased Fontanesi for 10 laps as Nancy van de Ven was running in third.

The German fan favorite was of course Larissa Papenmeier who maintained 4th position every lap from the start just ahead of fellow German Stephanie Laier. Back at the front the pair of title contenders battled on their way through lapped traffic but when the two lap board came out, Duncan made a pass to win the race almost 7 seconds ahead of Fontanesi.

Race 2 started with Duncan again out front but Fontanesi back slightly further unable to put in an early challenge. Splitting Duncan and Fontanesi on the first lap was Nancy van de Ven while Papenmeier was again 4th.

Fontanesi passed van de Ven for 2nd on lap 2 and 2 laps after that Papenmeier moved into 3rd. The #85 of van de Ven then lost 2 more spots to both Sara Andersen from Denmark and KTM Silver Action’s Amandine Verstappen.

Nancy van de Ven was able to get back two positions but remained unable to pass Papenmeier which would ultimately decide the final spot of the podium. Duncan took her second race win of the weekend this time by more than 15 seconds over Fontanesi. In the overall standings Duncan and Fontanesi clearly went 1-2 after identical race scores but Papenmeier took the final spot on the podium after a tie in points with van de Ven but a better race 2.

Courtney Duncan stated: “Overall the weekend went pretty good, I think when you go 1-1 you have to be happy and I am. I’m also really excited for Ottobiano!”

Duncan Conquers WMX Round of Portugal

AGUEDA (Portugal) 15 April 2018 - The Portuguese Round of the FIM Women’s Motocross Championship is complete with Altherm JCR Yamaha’s Courtney Duncan claiming the WMX victory! This weekend’s FIM Women’s Motocross Championship was played out over 2 days on changing conditions from a rutted and technical track Saturday to a soft and tricky surface Sunday.

Last week’s overall winner and red plate holder coming into the weekend was Larissa Papenmeier who started 3rd but was then passed by the 2017 champion, MXFONTA RACING Yamaha’s Kiara Fontanesi, on lap 2. Only 1 lap after passing Papenmeier the #8 crashed and dropped back to eleventh position.

Papenmeier ended up retaking third after Fontanesi’s fall and KTM Silver Action’s Amandine Verstappen moved to 4th. At the finish of Race 1 Duncan beat van de Ven by 13.9 seconds as Papenmeier took 3rd, Verstappen 4th, and Fontanesi recovered to 7th.

In Race 2 Larissa Papenmeier shot into the lead ahead of Fontanesi, Duncan, Shana van der Vlist, and van de Ven. After the first official lap Duncan made it past Fontanesi for second and van de Ven found her way around van der Vlist.

As van de Ven started to chase down Fontanesi, Duncan had her eyes set on the lead of Papenmeier. On the fifth lap of the ten completed Duncan made a pass stick for first position, nevertheless Papenmeier continued to charge and keep pressure on Duncan who kept nervously looking back.

On the final laps Duncan managed to regain a gap over Papenmeier and the rest crossing the line 8.7 seconds ahead of second. Duncan’s double race wins not only gave her the overall but also the championship leaders red plate.

Papenmeier’s 3-2 finishes secured her second over van de Ven’s 2-4, the struggling Kiara Fontanesi redeemed her Race 1 finish of 7th with 3rd in Race 2 for 4th overall, while Verstappen rounded out the top five. The top five finisher’s championship position is now identical to their overall finish today.
