Suzuki go big at home

The phrase ‘go big or go home’ just became ‘go big at home’ with the Suzuki factory squad pulling out all the stops to impress this weekend at their home grand prix, the Fiat Professional MXGP of Belgium.

Suzuki World MXGP is now owned and managed by Europe’s G.O.A.T, Stefan Everts, the most successful rider ever, with ten FIM Motocross World Championships to his name, one of which he won on a Suzuki RM125 back in 1991. As a tribute to his success more than two decades ago, and to celebrate his, and the teams’ home grand prix (the workshop is only a stone throw away from the paddock here in Lommel), the entire Suzuki World MXGP and MX2 team will be rocking a retro look this weekend inspired by a 1992 RM250.

Stefan and the crew held a presentation earlier this evening where they unveiled the super rad look that the Suzuki Factory riders Kevin Strijbos, Arminas Jasikonis, Jeremy Seewer, Brian Hsu and Bas Vaessen will be rocking this weekend.

Following the presentation the media were able to get some exclusive footage in terms of photo’s and interviews before joining the Suzuki team for dinner.

Lommel looms

LOMMEL (Belgium), 27 July 2016 – Last weekend it was the contrast of riding styles between Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl and Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser that set the tone at the MXGP of Czech Republic, which took place at the heavily elevated, rocky, clay-based track of Loket. Staying in tune with the theme of contrast, this weekend the fourteenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship, the Fiat Professional MXGP of Belgium will take place in Lommel, a facility that has no hills but is made out of bottomless sand.

Ask anyone; ‘out of the eighteen tracks that make up the MXGP series, which one is the gnarliest?’ There is a 90 % chance that their response will be ‘Lommel’ and you’ll see why this weekend especially with the addition of the European Championship where titles can be won in the EMX250, EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and the EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing. The Honda European 150 Championship will also line up for the third round of their series.

Last weekend Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl ‘s performance was epic to see, especially with Tim Gajser being at the top of his game right now. The German, who was a member of Team Germany, the team that won the 2012 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations that took place right here in the brutal pits of Lommel, will be a threat for the podium once again this weekend.

The super flamboyant cat we call ‘Tiga’, Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser, is bound to be a hard beast to tame this weekend. Flashback to his epic performance in the sand of Valkenswaard, another famed sand track that is only 30km away from here, earlier this season where he won the opening race. Tim has been laying the smack down on everyone in MXGP over the last thirteen rounds. He’s yet to finish off the podium and currently leads the championship by 109 points over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli.

In case you missed it Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli switched back to the KTM350SX-F last weekend in Loket and while he didn’t make quite the splash he was hoping for, there’s a good chance he is 100% sure he’s made the right choice for this weekend, even though it’s not his home grand prix, it’s the next closest thing for the Italian who resides in Lommel during the season.

It will be an actual home grand prix for three more podium threats, Team Suzuki World MXGP’s Kevin Strijbos, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek and Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle. All three riders don’t ride Lommel as often as you think, but it is a track that is hard to forget, so they’ll be quick.

Meanwhile another rider you will need to keep an eye on is Wilvo Virus Performance KTM’s Shaun Simpson, last years MXGP of Belgium winner. Simpson has been struggling with bike set-up and injuries this season, but will be feeling home this weekend since he lives only a few minutes up the road.

As for the defending champion Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre, he will be feeling a bit better this weekend with another week of training and testing under his belt.

It’s been said about one hundred million times before; Jeffrey Herlings biggest problem is…Jeffrey Herlings. There is no confirmation just yet, but all fingers and toes are crossed that The Bullet will line up on his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine in Lommel this weekend. If he doesn’t line up then the main candidates for the win in MX2 will be Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Dylan Ferrandis, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Anstie, Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass, if he was going to ride.

Anstie is a ‘coulda-shoulda-woulda’ type of rider. He’s got the skills, as we’ve seen before since he is a two-time grand prix winner here in the sands of Lommel. He has won it for the last two years and is likely to do the same again if Jeffrey is not on the line, although in saying that Ferrandis knows a thing or two about riding sand as well and since he is coming off his first grand prix win of the season, last weekend, he could be a good bet.

While you may not have normally picked Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer as a potential winner in the sand, it will be interesting to see his progression since training under the wing of the ten-time FIM Motocross World Champion Stefan Everts.

As for the super-spoilers… Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Petar Petrov is another “local”, even though he is originally Bulgarian, he has been living in Lommel for what seems like forever. Last year the ‘152’ landed on the podium here for the first time in his career. He’ll be expecting the same or better this weekend.

HSF Logistics Motorsport Team’s Brian Bogers is a killer sand rider as well, as is Kemea Yamaha’s Brent Van Doninck who is rumored to be back this weekend.

Vaessen & Rubini ride to victory

MANTOVA (Lombardia - Italy), 26 June 2016 – The super fun and jumpy sand circuit of Mantova played host to the eighth and sixth rounds of the EMX250 and EMX125 presented by FMF Racing championships where Team Suzuki World MX2’s Bas Vaessen and KTM Silver Action’s Stephen Rubini topped the box in their respective classes.

Not many American riders race the world's number one amateur series, the European Championship EMX250, so when one decides to take the plunge and give it a whirl, it’s exciting to see his progression and what he learns.

American Darian Sanayei took on the challenge this year and has been getting faster and stronger with each and every round. In race one yesterday, the youngster onboard a Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki took the holeshot ahead of the championship leader Bodo Schmidt Motosport’s Thomas Kjer Olsen. Olsen sat behind Sanayei for the first handful of laps before making a move for the lead. Sanayei said, “I got a good start but I wasn’t riding that good, I couldn’t see anyone’s lines so when Thomas passed me I just tried to follow him and see where he’s going.” Which is exactly what he did before finding his own set of good lines, and impressively passed the Red Plate holder back. After taking the lead, the 457 of Sanayei controlled the race for his fourth race win of the season. Olsen was second while Team Suzuki World MX2’s Bas Vaessen was third.

In race two this morning Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei timed the gate perfectly for his second holeshot of the weekend ahead of KTM Factory Juniors Josiah Natzke and Team Suzuki World MX2’s Bas Vaessen. Tip Top MP32 Yamaha’s Mathys Boisrame was in fourth before being knocked back to fifth by the championship leader Bodo Schmidt Motorsports Thomas Kjer Olsen who used him as a berm half of a lap in.

There was some real excitement, as Olsen took no prisoners on his way forward. He muscled Natzke out of the way for third and started chipping away at the 4-second gap of Vaessen who was in second.

Sanayei was looking super fast and super smooth out front before his bike locked up and chucked him off. When he tried to re-start it, it was seized solid, which was a devastating end to what should have been an awesome weekend. In contrast, Vaessen was in his element this weekend and actually pulled away from Kjer Olsen for a massive victory, his first of the season.

The Dutch are renowned for their sand riding skills, so while it was random to see Honda’s Ceriel Klein Kromhof finish third, it possibly wasn’t THAT random. Swede Anton Gole managed to get Natzke on the last lap for fourth while the Kiwi, Natzke managed to hold on for fifth, which was by far his best result of this year.

Happy days for Team Suzuki World MX2’s Bas Vaessen who admitted “I finally was able to cross the line in first, I’m always there or close, but I did it today, so it’s good.” The Dutchman hit two milestones this weekend with his first race win and first overall victory of the season. Bodo Schmidt Motorsport’s Thomas Kjer Olsen has finished on the podium at every single round and kept that podium streak alive with a second place overall, while Anton Gole uncorked his second bottle of bubbles this season in third.

In race one yesterday, it was the little Italian star onboard a De Carli KTM, Gianluca Facchetti, who pulled the holeshot and led the first couple of laps before he got bucked off the pegs in a choppy part of the track and looped out. Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Kim Savaste then inherited the lead and inched away, but was unable to withstand the eventual pressure of KTM Silver Action’s Stephen Rubini who was flying. Rubini passed Savaste with a couple of laps to go and took the checkers for the sixth time this season. Savaste took second, while the championship leader Sahkar KTM’s Jago Geerts overcame some adversity, which included a bit of gymnastics when he cartwheeled it in the latter stages of the race, for third ahead of Facchetti, and Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Brian Strubhart Moreau.

Meanwhile, IceOne Husqvarna’s Mikkel Haarup took the holeshot ahead of De Carli KTM’s Gianluca Facchetti and Italy’s Mattia Guadagnini. Sahkar KTM’s Jago Geerts was in fourth, but not for long as he made light work of Guadagnin for third on lap two.

The two hot shots from Race 1, KTM Silver Actions Stephen Rubini and Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Kim Savaste were buried at the back of the pack and were left with a lot of work to do in order to catch the front-runners.

Facchetti managed to out brake Haarup for the lead on lap three, which was only the start of Haarup’s problems as Geerts started upping the pace in third. After taking chunks out of Haarup’s 4 second advantage, Geerts got close enough to show Haarup a wheel and after a lap of literally trying everything, he took a chance at hammering a berm to the pass the Dane around the outside and it worked.

Geerts was out to cause an upset among the rowdy Italian fans that wanted to see Facchetti win here on home soil, while Haarup sat back and waited for one of them to make a mistake. With 5 minutes to go, the trio of Facchetti, Geerts and Haarup were switching between attack and defense as they swapped positions, which played right into the hands of KTM Silver Action’s race one winner Stephen Rubini.

Eventually Geerts managed to find his rhythm and gapped it for his sixth win of the season with a healthy 10 second lead over his biggest rival in the championship Rubini. Haarup managed to get the better of Facchetti with a few laps to go, which left him with a season best finish of third place while Facchetti chilled back in fourth, 12 seconds clear of Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Brian Strubhart Moreau.

With a 1-2 result, KTM Silver Action’s Stephen Rubini took his fourth round victory of the season while the championship leader Sahkar KTM’s Jago Geerts went 3 – 2 for second. De Carli KTM’s Gianluca Facchetti put a smile on the faces of thousands of fans out here in Mantova with his 4 – 4 for third.

Two Brits & a Frenchman on top at the British round of the European Championship

MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain), 19 June 2016 – Matterley Basin is a track that aspiring racers dream of riding. It hosts only one event per year, the FIM Motocross World Championship, and since the addition of the European Championship to the paddock of MXGP, young guns from all over the world have been able to take advantage of the unique opportunity to race on this world-class circuit.

Why is it so great? The track has an awesome flow, it has great dirt, it also has plenty of cool obstacles such as perfectly sculpted jumps, which for the youngsters are awesome to throw greasy whips over, and it also has a big selection of ruts to lay into and sweeping turns to power slide around.

The fans love it just as much as the riders because they can see the entire track from almost anywhere, which was extra awesome for the British fans today with British riders winning two of the three European Championship classes.

The seventh round of the European Championship EMX250 was won by British wild card, Apico Husqvarna’s Steven Clarke, while the fourth round of the European Championship EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing was won by GL12 Yamaha Racing’s Brit, Brad Anderson.

Meanwhile, KTM Silver Action Stephen Rubini topped the box for the second time on the bounce here at the fifth round of the European Championship EMX125 presented by FMF Racing.

No one had anything for KTM Factory Junior’s hot starter Jorge Prado who took yet another holeshot ahead of the local hero Apico Husqvarna’s Steven Clarke and the most recent round winner, Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei. The championship leader Bodo Scmidt Motorsport’s Thomas Kjer Olsen was also up front in fourth with Suzuki World MX2 star Bas Vaessen hot on his heels.

Sanayei was quick to make a move on Clarke. He pinned it up the inside, but Clarke shut the door, so he switched his lines and threw Clarkey off with a move around the outside. Sanayei got really hard on the brakes heading into the next turn, which saw Clarke run into him. Both riders stayed up and continued to battle hard, but it was Sanayei who crossed the line on lap two with the advantage of second place.

Sanayei won a race here at Matterley Basin last year, on his EMX250 debut, and looked to be feeling it again today as he took massive chunks out of the lead of Prado and nailed it up the inside of the Spaniard on lap four. Although Sanayei was running a fierce pace, the rookie, Prado, looked hungry for a win and remounted an attack. A mistake by the young KTM rider dropped him back and he failed to regain the lost ground.

Meanwhile, Vaessen started hammering it until his bike started cutting out, which forced him to pull into pit-lane.

With two laps to go, Clarke tipped some of the energy from the British fans in his fuel tank and charged past Prado for second despite catching his foot peg on the top of a jump while scrubbing. It looked a bit sketchy but the Brit was able to style it out.

Upping the intensity on the last lap, Thomas Kjer Olsen remembered what his right wrist is good for and started to twist it. The strong Dane caught Prado and Clarke. He managed to get Prado for third but Clarke held on tight for second. Sanayei, on the other hand, took his third consecutive race win while Prado was fourth with Nicolas Dercourt rounding out the top five.

In Race 2, Darian Sanayei got off to an ideal start with a massive holeshot but it wasn’t as smooth sailing as he would have hoped for with Steven Clarke not in the mood for games.

Clarke wasn’t taking any prisoners on his way to the front and went into a turn so hot he made the sun feel cold. It was with that corner speed he took the lead and went on to win the race and his home round of the European Championship.

Meanwhile Jorge Prado was dealing with pressure from Bas Vaessen for half of a lap before the Suzuki rider hucked the quad massively and set the Spaniard up around the next turn to make the pass for third. The next rider to give Prado some grief was the championship leader, Thomas Kjer Olsen, who used his race smarts to take over fourth.

Up front, the fans were bought to their feet as Clarke struggled to shake Sanayei who was holding onto him while Kjer Olsen connected with Vaessen in a battle for third. Vaessen went down but only lost a spot and managed to finish the lap in fifth.

The battle for the lead went down to the wire. At the checkers it was the wild card rider, Apico Husqvarna’s Steven Clarke, who got the job done for the race and overall win here in front of his home crowd. Bud Racing Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei crossed the line in second for second overall with Bodo Schmidt KTM’s Thomas Kjer Olsen finishing third for third. Nicolas Dercourt finished fourth in the final race ahead of Bas Vaessen.

It was a dramatic start to the second race in the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing  class with the race 1 winner and championship leader, Sahkar KTM’s Jago Geerts, getting tangled with another rider on the start straight and going down, while his closest rival, Silver Action KTM’s Stephen Rubini was also well outside of the top 15 after a terrible start.

De Carli KTM’s Gianluca Facchetti, on the other hand, took an awesome holeshot ahead of the French star Pierre Goupillon and the kid who went pole yesterday, Kevin Horgmo. Goupillon and Facchetti battled for the early lead before Horgmo pulled the pin, passed and gapped both of them. In the matter of 2 laps, Horgmo pulled a 7 second lead.

At the 10-minute mark, the two riders leading the championship, Geerts and Rubini, closed in on the top five. It wasn’t long before Rubini was on the hunt for the lead after taking over second place, while Geerts found himself trapped in a battle for fifth with MJC Yamaha’s Zachary Pichon. After a game of cat and mouse, it only took a mistake from Pichon where he stabbed the front end into a tight rut, and Geerts was through for fifth.

Despite coming from dead last, Jago Geerts was the fastest rider on track and it wasn’t long before he had made light work of Facchetti for fourth, while Rubini was putting in an unbelievable performance of his own and with 2 laps to go managed to put an easy pass on Horgmo for the lead. Also in those final 2 laps, Goupillon made a mistake and handed Geerts third.

At the checkers it was KTM Silver Action’s Stephen Rubini who took the win, which combined with his second place in race one was enough for the overall win. Kevin Horgmo finished the race in second ahead of Sahkar KTM’s Jago Geerts who managed to stand on the second step of the podium. Meanwhile Pierre Goupillon went 4 – 4 for third overall.

With Great Britain being the home of motocross, they are one of the most pro-2-stroke nations in the world so it was wicked for them to witness two Brits, Brad Anderson and Lewis Gregory, own the class here at Matterley Basin in Race 1 yesterday afternoon.

In Race 2 this morning, Kras took a massive holeshot on his FMF powered KTM 300 and used his brash attitude to knuckle down and air out a lead right off the bat. Meanwhile, the red plate holder, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Yentel Martens, was in third around turn one and didn’t waste any time in launching past Phil Mercer for second.

Mercer started dropping spots as the likes of Antonio Utrilla and yesterday’s British dominators, Lewis Gregory and Brad Anderson, emerged. Gregory was the fastest in Qualifying and was looking solid again today as he charged past the Spaniard, Utrilla. While Utrilla was dropped back to fourth, it was only the start of the carnage he was about to be faced with as yesterday’s race one winner, Anderson, came-a-knockin’.

Anderson was on a mission to win for his rowdy British fans, and put an aggressive move up the inside of Utrilla. Utrilla tried to respond and put a wheel on Anderson over the next jump. Ando whipped it out, as did Utrilla, but the Spaniard still clipped the Brit and went down like a ton of bricks.

Next on Ando’s hit list was his GL12 Yamaha teammate, Gregory. It was completely obvious there are no team instructions in that team as he threw an elbow at his teammate on the way past. Gregory tried to fight back but didn’t quite have the goods.

Both riders had charged hard from outside the top ten and both blitzed past Martens like he was standing still but couldn’t catch the leader, Kras, who had completely checked out.

Mike Kras took his fourth race win of the season, which was enough for second overall and the championship lead. GL12 Yamaha’s Brad Anderson came home in second to take the overall win here at his home round of the EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing championship. Anderson’s GL12 Yamaha teammate Lewis Gregory came home in third, which was enough for third overall.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Yentel Martens relinquished the red plate after only banking a pair of fourths this weekend. It now belongs to Mike Kras.
