Valk Secures EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing Title as Van Erp, L. Coenen and Krestinov Take Overall Victories

HYVINKÄÄ (Finland) 14 August 2022 – Finland made a memorable comeback to the World and European Championship racing calendar this weekend, with title celebrations from Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cas Valk who after the first race was crowned the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing Champion.

Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC’s Ivano Van Erp was the overall winner of the class, after a perfect 1-1 scorecard, which was also repeated by Lucas Coenen of Jumbo Husqvarna BT Racing in the EMX250 class, while in EMX Open the overall winner was Estonian Gert Krestinov.

In the opening EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing class, it was Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC’s Ivano Van Erp who got himself quickly into the lead ahead of Maximilian Werner of Diga Procross KTM Racing Team. While Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cas Valk started in seventh.

Karlis Alberts Reisulis of Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC started down in around eighth, while his brother Janis Martins Reisulis was 12th. K. Reisulis had a very strong lap and quickly found himself in third before getting around Werner to move into second by the second lap.

Alm dropped to seventh as Valk climbed his way into fourth and was looking to take third from Werner. He managed to do that just a couple of laps later.

Meanwhile, Van Erp was already more than seven seconds ahead of K. Reisulis who also had a steady seven second gap to Valk in third. J. Reisulis was also making good progress as he took away fourth from Werner on the sixth lap.

Werner crashed and finished the race 27th.

In the end, Van Erp took the victory ahead of K. Reisulis and Valk, with Valk celebrating his title victory as he crossed the line! At the beginning of the race, Alexis Fueri of Fantic Factory Team Maddii was his closest rival in terms of the championship but only finished 9th.

In race two it was Werner with the holeshot ahead of Van Erp, Hindersson and Maximilian Ernecker of F4E GasGas Racing Team. Lotte Van Drunen started in fifth ahead of Valk who was seventh.

K. Reisulis started in 13th while his brother J. Reisulis was 15th on the opening lap.

By lap two, Van Erp was in the lead, as K. Reisulis worked his way into fourth after a couple of very strong laps! Valk was in second at the time, as Werner dropped a position.

Further down the order, Julius Mikula got by Ernecker for fifth, while moments later the Austrian dropped to seventh after being passed by J. Reisulis, who was looking to pick up vital championship points!

Fueri then crashed out of ninth, which handed more points to the Reisulis’ brothers who were closing in on him in the championship standings.

Van Erp though was no match for anyone this weekend as he secured his first double race win victory ahead of Valk, K. Reisulis, Mikula and Werner.

A 1-1 result put Van Erp on the top step ahead of Valk and K. Reisulis. Though it was Valk who was awarded the gold plate and medal and was officially declared the 2021 EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing Champion! K. Reisulis finished second in the standings with 314 points, just 13 points ahead of his younger brother J. Reisulis.

Cas Valk: “I pushed hard all season, tried to avoid any big mistakes. I took good points in every race. For sure I was pushing hard in that final race to get the win but came up a little short. But overall, I am super happy and big thanks to my team for all of this, I wouldn’t have been able to do it! I will enjoy this moment”

Ivano Van Erp: “Yes for sure I am happy because it’s my last race in European EMX125, it’s really nice to win this, It’s also my last race with Kenny this year, it’s really nice.. I want to thank all the Yamaha crew for this season… It’s really emotional thank you!”.

In the first EMX250 race, Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Haakon Osterhagen continued to assert himself as a holeshot king in the category after getting off to another strong start, leading the likes of Lucas Coenen of Jumbo Husqvarna BT Racing and Mike Gwerder of WZ Racing Team. Gwerder then tagged L. Coenen on the opening lap which saw him crash out of third.

9MM Energy BUD Racing Kawasaki’s Quentin-Marc Prugnieres was one of the riders who got unlucky at the start and crashed. The Frenchman got going eventually and finished the race in 26th.

By the end of the opening lap, series leader Rick Elzinga of Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing was already third, while L. Coenen took the lead from Osterhagen. The Belgian then clocked the fastest lap of the race to extend his lead.

On lap two, L. Coenen lost the lead as he dropped back to fourth, which meant that Osterhagen was back in first place. Elzinga was promoted to second as TBS Conversion’s Camden McLellan was right there in third, looking to get around the Yamaha rider.

L. Coenen was pushing hard and was keen on making up for his earlier mistake as he got onto the rear wheels of McLellan and Elzinga. He managed to pass Elzinga during lap six, while it took him a few more laps to get around McLellan, but he did eventually on lap 11 as he went straight into the lead. Osterhagen dropped to third.

L. Coenen won the race ahead of McLellan, Osterhagen, Elzinga and Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cornelius Toendel.

In race two, the holeshot went to L. Coenen who was keen on getting out in front early on ahead of Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Andrea Bonacorsi, Team VRT KTM Veritise’s David Braceras, Gwerder, Osterhagen and Toendel, while Elzinga started in 10th.

Elzinga found himself quickly in sixth, while Tondel began to push Braceras for third and eventually managed to take away the position from the Spaniard.

Osterhagen climbed into fourth but was coming under pressure from Prugnieres who was keen on taking away the position from the Norwegian. By lap seven he was able to do just that.

As the race went on, Osterhagen then got caught by McLellan who was trying everything to get around the Fantic rider for fourth. After several attempts he managed to make the pass stick four laps from the end.

L. Coenen was fully in control from start to finish and ended up winning the race an impressive 21.885 seconds ahead of Bonacorsi and Toendel.

There was no doubt about who the winner was as Coenen stood on the top step proudly after winning both races ahead of McLellan who secured his second podium finish on the bounce and Bonacorsi who was third.

With one round to go, Elzinga will take the championship fight to France in one week, with Toendel 40 points behind and Coenen in third a further 20 points behind and still has a chance to go for the silver medal!

Lucas Coenen: “It was a perfect weekend. First place in both races. The track was rough in the second race, but I kept my rhythm, made a big gap and controlled my race. Whereas first race was more difficult because I made a small crash, but I came back to win. Two wins, we will see what happens in St Jean”.

In the first EMX Open of the weekend, the holeshot went to the championship leader Jose Butron of JD Gunnex KTM Racing who got comfortable in first position from the get-go. Second was Michael Ivanov ahead of Pekka Nissinen, Domantas Jazdauskas and Tomas Kohut of Osicka MX Team.

Michael Sandner of Raths Motorsports started in around sixth place and was looking to close the gap down to Kohut but a small mistake saw him drop back to ninth. Gert Krestinov was 10th at that point and was keen to move up the order.

Jazdauskas was second by the second lap but ended up crashing and did not carry on with the rest of the heat.

Butron opened up a steady 10-second gap fairly quickly as Krestinov made progress after getting around Sander and then Juuso Matikainen for fifth. The Estonian then got around John Adamson a few laps later and then Kohut to eventually make his way up to second position by the eighth lap.

By that point, Butron was too far in front for Krestinov to be able to do anything about it and in the end, the Spaniard won the race and extended his championship lead while Krestinov was second ahead of Matikainen, Kohut and Andero Lusbo who worked his way into fifth on the final lap after Erki Kahro dropped two positions.

In race two, it was home hero Matikainen with the holeshot ahead of Krestinov, Butron and Sandner. Kohut started in around sixth place.

Matikainen was looking solid in the lead ahead of Krestinov, with Butron keeping an eye on both in third. Krestinov was able to close the gap after setting the fastest lap of the race. The Estonian was eventually able to get the job done in lap three to take control of the race.

At the same time, Butron was passed by Kohut as Sandner crashed out of sixth. The Spaniard had another mistake a couple of laps later that saw him crash but he managed to get going quickly and stay ahead of John Adamson who was applying the pressure.

In the final few laps, Kohut put in the work to get by Matikainen to second place from the Finnish rider and also solidify his spot on the podium! Krestinov won the race ahead of Kohut, Matikainen, Butron and Adamson.

A 2-1 result gave Krestinov his first overall win in the EMX Open class ahead of Butron who was forced to settle for second ahead of Kohut who joined the pair in third.

The next round of the EMX Open class will take place in Turkey where the title will be decided. Butron heads into the final round of the series with a 26-point lead over Kohut.

Gert Krestinov: “The weekend was really good. It’s a short trip for us to come over. I like the sand tracks which makes it easier. First race, I had a bad start and came through to second. Second race, I got a good start, made a pass and took the lead and made a gap. Thanks to everyone that helped me to get here”.

Crucial Championship Weekend Predicted at the MXGP of Finland!

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 10 August 2022 – With just three rounds remaining on the 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship calendar, it’s crunch time in both the MXGP and MX2 Championships.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser has a chance to secure his fifth world title at the MXGP of Finland this weekend, while Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle remain tight in their title fight and are separated by just 23 points.

The MXGP title is not the only one that could be celebrated this weekend, as the final stop of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing championship is taking place in Hyvinkää, where Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cas Valk is looking good for his first European crown!

The EMX250 and EMX Open riders will also line up for their penultimate rounds with Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Rick Elzinga and WZ Racing’s Jose Butron still heading the standings.

The MXGP of Finland will return to the beloved Hyvinkää circuit that hosted its very first Grand Prix in 1965 which was won by the legend Torsten Hallman. Since then, the Finnish track has hosted a total of 23 GP, with the most recent one which took place in 2014 won by Antonio Cairoli and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser will enter the 16th round of the series just one step from his fifth world title. Though it's not done just yet, to secure the crown in race one, Gajser would need to finish first and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer outside the top five, but either way, Gajser needs to score at least 35 points to leave the Finnish Grand Prix as the 2022 World Champion.

And Seewer is not bound to make this easy as he continues to rack up win after win, his latest being at the MXGP of Sweden where he secured his third overall victory of the season. It’s no secret that the Swiss is having one of his most successful seasons since moving up to the MXGP class, and while the possibility of the title may be out of reach, that doesn’t mean he can’t continue to challenge for race wins and the top step of the podium, which can no doubt be expected again this weekend.

Looking back at the last time we visited Hyvinkää, Gajser finished on the box alongside Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings who was the winner and Jordi Tixier of JT911 Racing Team who occupied the third step.

Other riders to look out for this weekend also includes Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff and Maxime Renaux who alongside Seewer gifted the team an amazing 1-2-3 result in the first race in Uddevalla. Seewer followed that up with his over victory in race two, after Renaux won the first race, while Coldenhoff rounded out the podium to finish third overall. While Seewer and Coldenhoff will be looking to carry on with their podium success, Renaux will be hoping to bounce back after crashing out big in the second MXGP heat.

Team HRC’s Mitch Evans also turned some heads in Sweden after his triumph in the qualifying heat and then an impressive performance in the opening race where he battled from last place to tenth and then a strong fourth in race two. It will be interesting to see if he can bring this intensity to Finland and possibly climb the podium for the first time since his big wrist injury.

iXS Hostettler MXGP Team’s Valentin Guillod was another rider who stood out in the previous round after a 9-12 result that put him 10th overall. Guillod took the Fox Holeshot in race one and was inside the top five for most of the race before a mistake in the final stages cost him some vital positions. Nonetheless, this was hopefully a confidence boost for Guillod who we could see inside the top 10 more regularly as we finish off this season.

Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre came close to his first podium finish since coming back from injury. Febvre has been challenging at the sharp end since his comeback, but consistency is what he will need in the last three GPs to end the year on a high as he begins his focus for the title in 2023. Last time around in 2014, Kevin Strijbos, who is now the team coach at the Kawasaki team, was on the box, so he could give Febvre and Ben Watson some useful tips for this weekend’s GP.

Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Briand Bogers and Pauls Jonass will be looking for a much better race weekend in Finland, as Bogers edges closer to sixth in the championship and is only three points behind Honda 114 Motorsports’ Ruben Fernandez who made his return in Sweden. Meanwhile, Jonass did not have the weekend he had hoped for in Sweden after finishing 12th overall.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado will be looking to put on his best performance this weekend, as he remains solid in third in the championship standings.

In MX2, the Finnish Grand Prix will be yet another critical weekend in the title fight between Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle who remain separated by 23 points after tying on points in Sweden.

Geerts came out on top after securing the win in race two, thus taking the number one trophy and keeping the points levelled. Though the MXGP of Finland will be important as it could be the deciding weekend for the title as Vialle will have the advantage of the home Grand Prix in France the following weekend. For Geerts, it will be important to maximise his points this time around to have a comfortable lead ahead of the trip to St Jean d'Angely.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Simone Längenfelder finished third on the box in Sweden after also leading some laps in the second heat. As it stands Längenfelder has five podiums to his name and could add another one this time around. Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant also has five podiums to his name and will be eager to get back in the mix after a couple of hard weekends.

Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf and Roan van de Moosdijk are another threat for the podium this weekend, as both will be looking to put the struggles of last weekend behind them and deliver some top scores. de Wolf has now passed Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz’ Stephen Rubini in the standings and is eighth, while Moosdijk is riding back to fitness but is keen on a podium by the end of the year – which could be possible in Finland.

JP253 TEM rider Jan Pancar was impressive at the MXGP of Sweden as he ran inside the top three for much of the qualifying race and then delivered a solid result in race two where he placed sixth. Race intensity is still something that he needs to work on, as he said so LIVE on MXGP-TV, but it’s still a very impressive result from the privateer rider.

Toendel and Pezzuto Win EMX250 and EMX Open Rounds in Maggiora

MAGGIORA (Italy) 8 May 2022 – The third and fourth rounds of the EMX250 and EMX Open Championship have concluded in Maggiora for the round of Italy. The weekend saw varying conditions, with rain staying away on Saturday, though with heavy rainfall in the night, the EMX riders were presented with much tougher conditions this morning.

Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cornelius Toendel did not let this affect his performance, as went on to claim his first overall victory in EMX250 as well as the red plate after Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Rick Elzinga did not finish the second race and lost vital championship points.

Meanwhile in the EMX Open class, Stefano Pezzuto claimed his first overall win on home soil as JD Gunnex KTM Racing’s Jose Butron secured the red plate after Rath’s Motorsports Michael Sandner’s struggles in the second heat too.

In the opening EMX250 race yesterday the holeshot went to Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cornelius Toendel as he led Lucas Coenen of Jumbo Husqvarna BT Racing Team and Yago Martinez.

Camden McLellan of TBS Conversions Racing Team crashed as Martinez began to come under pressure from Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Haakon Osterhagen as the two battled for third.

Series leader, Rick Elzinga of Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing started down in around tenth and was doing his best to make some nice passes in the opening laps. He caught onto his teammate Andrea Bonacorsi and passed him to move into ninth before also catching his other teammate, Dave Kooiker.

By that point Toendel was already more than four seconds ahead, as Osterhagen continued his quest for third with Martinez not backing down easily. There was not changed inside the top three until lap seven, when Osterhagen was finally able to fight an opportunity to pass for third place.

Elzinga struggled to fight back further up the field as he managed to make just one more pass before the chequered flag as him and Bonacorsi got by Lorenzo Ciabatti. In the end, Elzinga was forced to settle for seventh.

Toendel went on to win the opening race with a 5.970 second advantage over Coenen who rode a strong and consistent race and finish in second, ahead of Osterhagen who was third.

In the second race, it was Osterhagen who grabbed the holeshot from his teammate Toendel, Wade, David Braceras of Team VRT KTM Veritise and Marcel Stauffer of WZ Racing Team.

Lucas Coenen, who finished second in race one, got unlucky as he crashed on the start straight after the gate dropped, eventually managing to fight back to 15th.

Elzinga started down in around seventh behind Bonacorsi and Braceras, as Camden Mc Lellan of TBS Conversions Racing Team passed the series leader, pushing him down to eighth.

Bonacorsi then passed Braceras as he set his sights on Stauffer who managed to move by Wade for third. All while Elzinga crashed and rapidly dropped down the order. The Dutchman did not carry on with the race and therefore lost valuable points and the red plate.

Toendel set the fastest lap of the race in the early stages, as Osterhagen responded in order to keep a healthy gap at the front. While Wade lost another spot to Bonacorsi and then to Braceras and eventually Mc Lellan.

On lap six, Bonacorsi got himself into third but was too far behind the two Norwegians at the front. Osterhagen was able to maintain a clean and steady race on his way to his first EMX250 race victory, with Toendel second, Bonacorsi third, Braceras third and Mc Lellan fifth.

With a 1-2 result, Toendel celebrated an overall victory at the round of Italy, with his teammate Osterhagen in second and Braceras finishing on the box in third. With Elzinga not picking up any points in the second race due to a DNF, Toendel now leads the series, as Elzinga slips to second and Osterhagen takes the third spot.

The next round of the EMX250 championship heads to Riola Sardo for the round of Sardegna which will take place next weekend.

Cornelius Toendel: “Solid weekend, good starts and good races. The most important thing is to score good championship points and I did that, and we came away with the red plate. I would like to also congratulate my teammate; he had a good second race and it was nice to get a 1-2 for the team”.

In the first EMX Open race of the weekend, it was Rath’s Motorsports Michael Sandner who took the holeshot from JD Gunnex KTM Racing’s Jose Butron. The Spaniard was quick to get himself in the lead as Sandner followed, ahead of Stefano Pezzuto, Tomas Kohut of Osicka MX Team and KTM Beddini MX2 Joakin Furbetta, while Millionair Racing Team’s Giuseppe Tropepe started in around seventh.

Davide De Bortoli and Tropepe got around Furbetta, as Tropepe also made a pass on last year’s EMX Open champion to move into fifth as he set his sights on higher positions. By that point Butron was 3.141 seconds ahead of Sandner as Tropepe made yet another pass to get around Kohut for fourth.

Sandner and Pezzuto were locked in battle for second position as they started to close the gap to Butron who had a train forming behind him as Tropepe also joined the battle after setting some very fast laps.

On lap six Butron lost the lead to Pezzuto as Tropepe also went by. By the following lap the leader changed again, with Tropepe in the driving seat.

The final few laps of the race were full of action as the battle for the win intensified. Butron was able to close down the gap as Tropepe was caught by Pezzuto and in the closing stages of the first race, Butron was able to fight back and take over first place for the second time.

The Spaniard led the final five laps of the race as he took the race win ahead of Tropepe, Pezzuto and Sandner, with Kohut rounding out the top five.

In the second race, it was Tropepe who was the leading rider into the first corner before Simone Croci moved into the lead, all while race one winner, Butron, was down in 19th position.

Quite a few riders struggled with the muddy conditions as the track became stickier, though Croci was able to keep his focus and stretch the lead to 6.549 seconds at the early stages of the race.

Further down the order, Furbetta passed Andrea La Scala for eighth as Butron made good progress despite the tough conditions, to get himself into 11th and then a couple of laps later into 8th as he passed Furbetta.

Tropepe was able to bring down Croci’s lead, as Sandner lost a couple of positions to Jost and then Kohut. Sandner’s race only went from bad to worse as on lap eight he crashed and struggled to pick up his bike which was heavy from all the mud.

Tropepe took over the lead on lap six as Pezzuto got himself into second too, with Croci dropping to third in a matter of corners. De Bortoli was the next rider to pass Croci.

Tropepe led for two laps before going down himself and eventually ended up 21st behind Sandner.

In the final laps, Croci was able to close in on Pezzuto and challenge him for the win. The two battled closely and then it looked like Pezzuto’s bike stopped which gave Croci and easy pass on his way to the race victory. Pezzuto managed to get going in second, with Kohut finishing in third ahead of Jost and Butron who fought back to fifth.

Pezzuto claimed the overall victory with a 3-2 result ahead of Butron who was second and Croci third. In terms of the championship, Butron now leads with 150 points, 21 ahead of Sandner who lost valuable points this weekend, while Kohut is third just two points behind.

The next round of the EMX Open Championship will take place in Finland on the 13th and 14th of August.

Stefano Pezzuto: “Two good races but not really perfect for me as yesterday I was third and today second, but I am happy to get the first overall. Thanks to my team and sponsor”
