MXGP Gets Back to Work in Kegums

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 20 April 2022 – With the Easter break finished and batteries re-charged, it’s time for the FIM Motocross World Championship to get back to work as round six is set to take place in Kegums for the MXGP of Latvia this weekend.

Since 2005, when Kegums first made its FIM Motocross World Championship debut by holding the MX3 World Championship round, the Latvian track has built an impressive portfolio. The first official MXGP race to take place at the Motocenter "Zelta Zirgs" circuit was in 2009, with the inaugural event won by none other than Antonio Cairoli in MX1 and Rui Goncalves in MX2.

In the years that followed, Kegums has hosted 14 GPs, including the first ever triple-header in 2020. Along with hosting some of the best Grand Prix weekends, in 2014 the Latvian venue had the pleasure of holding the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations which was won by Team France.

As it stands, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings holds the record for the most victories in Kegums, with six ahead of Cairoli who has five. Though with Cairoli retired and Herlings still recovering from injury, this leaves the door open for new riders to write their name in the history books of Motocenter "Zelta Zirgs".

This weekend, alongside the regular MXGP and MX2 action, we will see further rounds of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX Open classes, as Latvia’s Karlis Alberts Reisulis of Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC and his brother Janis Martins Reisulis will aim for top positions on home soil in the 125cc class. K. Reisulis was one of the podium finishers in Trentino, alongside Alexis Fueri of Fantic Factory Team Maddii who took away the series lead from his teammate Cas Valk who also finished on the box.

Meanwhile in the EMX Open category, Michael Sandner of Raths Motorsports will look to extend his championship lead over Jose Butron of JD Gunnex KTM Racing Team and Raf Meuwissen of Raths Motorsports.

In MXGP, all eyes will be on the home hero Pauls Jonass of Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing who has been working towards a spot on the podium in the last couple of rounds. Despite set-back in the off-season which then translated in a lack of bike time and a tough first few races, the Latvian did not let this affect him. A win in the qualifying race in Argentina was the boost of confidence he needed and since then has delivered a string of top five finishes. In Trentino, Jonass struggled with illness but here’s to hope that he has had the time to fight that and be on top form for his home GP this weekend.

Meanwhile Team HRC’s Tim Gajser will be the man to beat as he will no doubt be full of confidence following his first 1-1 victory of the season in Trentino. That’s now four GP victories for Gajser out of five, which are very strong stats as he aims for the title this season. Having also won the GP in Latvia last year, he is looking like the favourite for this year too.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado was not on the form he may have expected in Trentino, after his GP victory in Portugal. He finished third on the podium, just two points ahead of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer who was within touching distance of a spot on the box. Though Prado has been good in Latvia in the previous years, getting his first GP win there in 2019 in MX2 and his first MXGP podium in 2020. Last season he was also on the podium, behind Gajser and ahead of Herlings, so another podium finish is on the cards.

As mentioned, Seewer was within touching distance of the podium at the previous round in Trentino and getting back on the box would be a really positive result for the Swiss who had a couple of tough weeks following his crash in Argentina. Seewer has been on the podium in Kegums once before already, as he placed second overall at the MXGP of Riga in 2020 – so he has what it takes to do it again no doubt.

His teammates Glenn Coldenhoff and Maxime Renaux are another pair to watch with Renaux continuing his strong rookie season having secured his third podium just a couple of weeks ago in Trentino, while Coldenhoff has also been on the rise, producing some very good results. Renaux was also the winner in MX2 at the Latvian Grand Prix last year, so he knows how to lead laps at the Zelta Zirgs circuit, but so does Coldenhoff, having previously won in Kegums in 2015 and 2020.

Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis is unfortunately set to miss the MXGP of Latvia due to sustaining two broken ribs a few weeks ago. The Latvian Grand Prix is the closest thing to a home race that Jasikonis has, with many Lithuanian fans always making the trip across the border to Kegums. While the tall Lithuanian will not line-up, he will be present at the race to support his teammate Calvin Vlaanderen who has been building in the last couple of races. The first heat in Trentino saw Vlaanderen fight through to sixth, while the second race ended in tears with a big crash ending his race. Though he looks promising as we head into the races this weekend.

An exciting name on the entry lists though is Tanel Leok who after retiring from Grand Prix racing at the end of 2020 will make his comeback for the Latvian GP.

In MX2, things are starting to get interesting, as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle now leads the MX2 Championship standings after a perfect weekend in Trentino where he went 1-1. Meanwhile Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts had a shocking weekend that ended in a costly DNF following a couple of crashes, with the Belgian no doubt fired up to take back the red plate this weekend.

Vialle has been looking strong and much like his old self that we used to see taking Fox Holeshot’s and winning races, but Geerts has the advantage of more GP wins in Kegums (two in MX2 and one in the EMX250 class) compared to Vialle’s one victory. But that doesn’t mean that Vialle cannot make it happen this weekend as he will aim to pull away from his championship rival.

While in the last couple of races Vialle has been the man to beat, he has been challenged by the likes of Mikkel Haarup of Big Van World MTX Kawasaki and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf. This weekend Haarup will aim for his fourth podium finish on the bounce, as he continues his most successful season in MX2 to date. The last couple of weeks have been important for the Dane who has admitted that his performance during timed practice and Qualifying needs work in order to get that strong starting position for Sunday, which will be vital this weekend with the sharp right first corner.

de Wolf is among the podium favourite for this weekend too, having delivered his second podium of the season in Trentino with a second overall. He fought hard against Vialle and with confidence building since his crash in Argentina, we could see him fight for the top spot this time around.

Kevin Horgmo of F&H Kawasaki Racing is another rider to watch, along with Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini who was on the podium last year in Latvia. Guadagnini needs to deliver some good results as he is yet to make his podium appearance in 2022 – but this weekend could be his weekend.

Looking to represent on home soil will be wildcard rider Mairis Pumpurs who will be the only Latvian set to line-up in MX2 this weekend. There is no doubt that Pumpurs will be more motivated than ever to put on his performance in front of home fans.

Fueri and Tropepe Win Second Round of EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX Open in Trentino

PIETRAMURATA (Trentino) 10 April 2022 – Rounds two of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX Open Championships have concluded in Pietramurata with Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Alexis Fueri and Millionair Racing Team’s Giuseppe Tropepe taking to the top step in their classes for the round of Trentino.

Fueri had the perfect weekend, celebrating a lot of firsts, including first race win, first 1-1 scorecard, first overall victory and first time leading the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing championship. Meanwhile Tropepe enjoyed his own success, winning in front of his home crowd here in Italy as he celebrated his first win in the EMX Open category.

In EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing heat one, it was Alexis Fueri of Fantic Factory Team Maddii who led the way ahead of Julius Mikula, Elias Escandell of RFME GASGAS MX JUNIOR TEAM along with Maximilian Werner of KTM Kosak Team who was right there also.

A few riders went down in the first corner, this included Janis Martins Reisulis. Meanwhile timed practice winner Ferruccio Zanchi of Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC’s started down in seventh, with the championship leader Cas Valk of Fantic Factory Team Maddii also starting outside the top 10.

Though Valk was very impressive in the opening lap as he was quick to make some passes and get himself into third. A lap later he also took second from Mikula as Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC’s Karlis Alberts Reisulis got himself into fifth.

Zanchi then crashed as he showed down in 36th and did not finish the race, which was costly for his championship chase. Ivano Van Erp of Yamaha Europe EMX125 also crashed as he showed down in 31st.

K. Reisulis then passed Elias Auclair for fourth and a lap later the Latvian was ahead of Mikula too as he got himself into third after a nice battle with the rider from Czech Republic. Auclair then dropped to 7th as Escandell and Matteo Luigi Russi of Tech 32 went by. Auclair eventually did not finish the last two laps of the race.

Back at the front, Fueri was looking comfortable as he extended his lead over his teammate Valk. Though further behind them, Mikula crashed out of fourth and got going again in around eighth.

The focused shifted back to the front of the pack in the closing stages, as Fueri made a mistake which cost him previous time and allowed Valk to close right in. In the final few laps, we were treated to a close battle between the teammates for the race victory, with Valk not backing down until the pair crossed the line, as Fueri held on to win the race by just 0.533 seconds! K. Reisulis was third ahead of Escandell and Russi.

In the second race, there was some commotion in the start as a few riders went down in the first corner, this included championship leader Valk along with the likes of J. Reisulis and Mikula. Though it was Holiver Brizio who led the way with Antonio Gallego of RFME GASGAS MX JUNIOR TEAM, Fueri and Vitezslav Marek just behind.

By the beginning of the second lap, Fueri was already in the lead, as K. Reisulis got himself into 10th after passing Jaka Peklaj of SIXTYTWO Motorsport Husqvarna. The Latvian then made two more swift passes as he moved into to 8th and continued his charge to the front.

By the fourth lap, K. Reisulis was already in fourth as he set his sights on Marek and Gallego ahead. Marek was looking faster as he pushed the Spaniard but could not find a way around him until K. Reisulis went by both and only then Marek could find his own opportunity to get around.

Meanwhile Valk was making good progress as he edged closer to the top 10, while Fueri was getting comfortable in the lead as he had more than a 7 second lead over K. Reisulis who was second.

Fueri’s lead only continued to grow and by the chequered flag the Frenchman was 18.556 seconds ahead as he secured another race victory. K. Reisulis was second as Marek held on to third ahead of Van Erp who made a great comeback from the back of the field to fourth. Mikula also made a good recovery as he fought back to fifth. Meanwhile Valk managed to fight back to eighth.

With the perfect 1-1 score, Fueri took to the top step of the podium, ahead of K. Reisulis and Valk. A strong weekend here in Trentino for Fueri also means that he now leads the championship by nine points over Valk who is second, as K. Reisulis sits in third.

Alexis Fueri: “It was a very good weekend. I took the pole position of my group, two holeshots, two wins, it’s amazing. But the season is long and the championship has just started, it’s nice to take the red plate but now I need to keep it and I will work for that”.

In EMX Open race one, it was Michael Sandner of Raths Motorsports who led the way ahead of Stefano Pezzuto, Raf Meuwissen of Raths Motorsports and Giuseppe Tropepe of Millionair Racing Team. Tom Grimshaw of Chambers Racing started well too and was running in fifth behind the leaders.

A couple of riders got caught up in a first turn crash, this included Jose Butron of JD Gunnex KTM Racing Team as well as Marcel Stauffer from Sturm STC Racing Team.

On the opening lap, Sandner crashed out of the lead which gave Pezzuto a FastTrack ticket into first place as Grimshaw snuck past Meuwissen into third.

While Sandner dropped quite a few positions as a result of his crash, he was quick to make some good passes after that, in order to catch-up with Brad Anderson who was fifth at the time. Anderson was defensive, but Sandner was able to get past him by the sixth lap.

Pezzuto led until lap six, as Tropepe was able to close in and make a pass stick. At the same time Sandner and Tomas Kohut of Osicka MX Team closed in on Anderson. Both eventually passed the Brit who dropped down to 13th by the end of the race.

Grimshaw then began to struggle as he was caught and passed by Meuwissen and Sandner, with the Austrian taking over third by the ninth lap.

Tropepe was getting comfortable at the sharp end, as he led Pezzuto by 3.967 seconds. Butron though was edging closer to the top ten and a few laps later the Spaniard, along with Simon Jost of Osicka MX Team and Jens Getteman passed Grimshaw, as the Brit eventually dropped down to 12th.

Butron continued his charge forward as he got by Kohut and then Meuwissen for fifth, as Meuwissen was also passed by Kohut and later Jost to eventually finish the race in 8th.

Tropepe went on to win the opening heat ahead of Pezzuto, Sandner, Stauffer and Butron who were the top five.

In race two, it was Sandner who led into the first corner, Tropepe was second ahead of Kohut and Croci, but Croci was fast to make a pass on Kohut to move into third. Meanwhile, just like in race one, Butron along with Stauffer, Krestinov and Anderson got caught in the first turn crash involving quite a few riders.

Stauffer made some nice passes on the opening laps and was already in 11th by the third lap with Meuwissen just ahead of him. But at the front of the field, Tropepe was closing in on the leader, as he set the fastest lap of the race, though Sandner was quick to respond bettering that time and giving himself some breathing room from the Italian in second.

De Bortoli went out of the second race, as he saw his championship go from bad to worse.

Kohut then started to push Croci for third, as Jost passed Pregel for fifth while Sandner got comfortable in the lead as he stretched it to 7.068 seconds.

In the closing stages of the race the fight for third between Croci and Kohut intensified as the pair made contact, with Kohut diving down the inside of Husqvarna rider to not only take third but solidify his spot on the podium.

Sandner went on to win the race ahead of Tropepe and Kohut. Though the podium looked a little different as Tropepe’s 1-2 result gave him the upper hand and a ticket to the top step of the podium, with Sandner second and Kohut on the third step of the box.

After round two, Sandner continues to lead the EMX Open Championship and is 24 points clear of Butron who remains second ahead of Meuwissen who is third with 60 points.

Giuseppe Tropepe: “Was a really consistent weekend. Yesterday the track was better and today was a bit more slippery, I got a good start in second position and stayed there. I am really happy about my riding after injury. I’m really happy and I want to say thanks to my team, my family and my sponsors for the opportunity”.

New Track Layout Set to Challenge Riders at the MXGP of Trentino

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 6 April 2022 – The FIM Motocross World Championship continues this weekend with the fifth round of the series nestled in the stunning Dolomite Mountains of Pietramurata for the MXGP of Trentino!

The Pietramurata venue made its first appearance in the FIM Motocross World Championship back in 1987, with the inaugural Grand Prix won by Massimo Contini in the 125cc category. Since then, the hard-pack circuit has hosted 16 Grand Prix races, which also includes several triple headers in 2020 and 2021.

Trentino has been home to some incredible races and championship showdowns with the last two MX2 world titles of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle (2020) and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux (2021) celebrated at the spectacular venue, along with Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan’s last two WMX world titles too.

As it stands, Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing are the most successful riders at the Pietramurata venue, with five GP victories each. Though with Cairoli retired and Herlings out with injury, this leaves the door open for Team HRC’s Tim Gajser to level up with the pair, as he sits second with four overall wins.

This weekend, the MXGP of Trentino will be the perfect setting for a great weekend of racing, with a brand-new track layout ready to test the riders. The Crossodromo “il Ciclamino” will run in a different direction this weekend, with minor changes to accommodate the modification, while the essence of the circuit will remain the same.

Alongside the regular MXGP and MX2 action, we will also see rounds of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX Open taking place on Saturday and Sunday.

What will be interesting to see in MXGP this weekend is whether after breaking Gajser’s winning streak in Portugal Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado can start his very own string of victories. Prado admitted that he has been riding with pressure, but now with his first GP win since Loket last year, finally off his back, maybe that will give him the much-needed boost to carry on with this momentum and ride like his usual self.

Though Gajser has been very strong this season so far, winning three GP’s on the bounce, so one weekend without the GP victory doesn’t rule him out straight away. Pietramurata is a good track for the Slovenian, with the added bonus of his home fans and the famous ‘Gajser corner’ which will no doubt give him an extra push during the races.

But of course, there seems to be a growing threat from the likes of Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Brian Bogers and Pauls Jonass who had a very good weekend in Portugal. No doubt the standout performance goes to Bogers, who after dislocating his shoulder in Argentina just two weeks prior, fought back to a podium position for his first ever visit to the box in MXGP and his first podium in general since 2017. It would be nice to see him carry this momentum and motivation into the rest of the season.

There’s also the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing squad to watch out for. Glenn Coldenhoff had a really positive weekend in Agueda, after winning the qualifying race, the Dutchman had a solid scorecard in the races, going 4-3 for fourth overall, just two points off the podium. Coldenhoff has admitted he has struggled with severe arm pump in the first rounds and is looking to put this behind him and focus on the positive results.

Meanwhile his teammates, Maxime Renaux and Jeremy Seewer have also had their share of ups and downs. After winning his first MXGP race, Renaux didn’t seem his usual self in Portugal as he struggled with crashes and could only manage 11th overall. But Trentino is a special place for him, a track where he secured his first world title just last season, so there’s no doubt that he will be fired up for the weekend and keen to make up for last weekend.

Seewer also has his own success in Trentino, having won the Grand Prix there last year, his second in MXGP. While the Swiss hopes for another podium finish, he is also realistic having already made huge steps since Argentina where he picked up a concussion. It was not clear whether he would even start his 150th GP in Portugal, so having delivered a solid result of 6th overall and a few more days rest, it will be interesting to see what he can do this time around.

Another stand-out performance is one from Calvin Vlaanderen of Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing Team. Vlaanderen along with Arminas Jasikonis missed the Argentinian Grand Prix, and while Jasikonis missed the race last weekend too, Vlaanderen was present and delivered a very solid result of 7th overall which is also his best result of the season so far.

Honda 114 Motorsports Ruben Fernandez was another rider to watch last weekend, but that didn’t quite go to plan for the Spaniard. Fernandez posted the fastest time in free and time practice but that did not translate into a good qualifying as he crashed twice, the latter one being the one that left him worse for wear. He did however line-up for the Sunday races, though 8th overall was the best he could deliver. It is clear that his speed is there and hopefully that can translate into a good race too all he needs is the experience and time and now returning to a place where he was on the podium in MX2 last year, should give him an extra bit of motivation too.

Heading into the weekend, focus will be also on the Italian riders, such as Alberto Forato of SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery and Nicholas Lapucci of Fantic Factory Team Maddii  to see what they can do on home soil. Meanwhile Beta SDM Corse rider Alessandro Lupino will miss his home round due to surgery in Portugal last week.

2. Glenn Coldenhoff

3. Tim Gajser

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 186 points; 2. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 165 p.; 3. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 144 p.; 4. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 124 p.; 5. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, YAM), 109 p.; 6. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, HON), 101 p.; 7. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, BET), 99 p.; 8. Brian Bogers (NED, HUS), 97 p.; 9. Alberto Forato (ITA, GAS), 82 p.; 10. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, KTM), 73 p.;

In MX2, all eyes will be on Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle who secured a back-to-back GP victory in Portugal with a 1-2 result over Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts. Coming into this race weekend in Trentino, both riders have the chance to win the GP, having both won there previously. It will be interesting to see if the memories of securing a world title will give Vialle an extra edge or whether Geerts will be able to bounce back and get back on the top spot to maintain a steady championship lead.

While many expect the fight to be between Vialle and Geerts, it’s also important not to rule out other potential threats in the likes of Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup or Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf for example.

Haarup has been on a high in these last two GP’s having score two podiums on the bounce for his best career result. Haarup has what it takes to win, but his lack of experience at the front could be a factor, though he admitted himself that leading in Portugal has already taught him a lot. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see whether the Dane can continue this form into the fifth round as he currently sits third in the championship.

Husqvarna’s de Wolf is another rider capable of getting on the box. At the MXGP of Patagonia-Argentina it seemed like the Dutchman could be another name to add to the injured list in 2022, but his surprise return in Portugal really caught attention. A 3-5 result put him very close to the podium and there’s nothing to stop him doing it again in Trentino this weekend.

Just a further two points behind was F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Kevin Horgmo who finished his weekend with 33 points and a Fox Holeshot. Horgmo has consistently battled at the sharp end and after finishing fifth overall in Portugal, he keeps edging closer to a podium every weekend. Last year, Horgmo went 2-1 to win the EMX250 round in Trentino, so he has what it takes to lead laps and win there.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant made his comeback last weekend and finished his first 2022 GP with 7th overall. It’s a solid building point for the Frenchman and hopefully we see him improve race by race.

Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini and Simon Längenfelder will need a positive result this weekend after a couple of tough races. Guadagnini looked solid out of the gate in race one, though crashed in the second corner, which didn’t set the best tone for the day. He was able to fight back to 12th and finish 5th in race two, but will need a more positive result to stay in the running of a good overall result this season. Längenfelder had troubles of his own managing a 13-9 scorecard which he will no doubt look to improve also.

Local faces to look out for this weekend will be SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery’s Andrea Adamo who will be looking to get back on the box after his first podium in Mantova last month, along with Andrea Bonacorsi of Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing Team who will make another wildcard appearance in MX2.
