TV COVERAGE: HOW TO WATCH THE MXGP OF ITALY

MAGGIORA (Italy) 6 May 2022 – The FIM Motocross World Championship continues with the MXGP of Italy this weekend, as Maggiora Park is set to host its 11th World Championship event since first making an appearance on the racing calendar in 1966.

As it stands, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser leads the MXGP standings with a 66-point advantage and with his closest rival Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado out of the GP with a dislocated shoulder, this weekend will see him extend the lead and get a tighter crip on the title. While in MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle are level on points as they enter the seventh round of the series, which should make for some very interesting racing as the two title hopefuls start again from zero.

Don’t miss the action this weekend and check out the full list of channels below that will air LIVE and delayed action of the MXGP of Italy, along with the 26min Behind-the-Gate magazine, available to enjoy on MXGP-TV.com and via our TV magazine partners following the GP weekend, featuring the best moments from the races and exclusive interviews, plus more!

Maggiora Awaits MXGP Action for Italian Grand Prix

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 4 May 2022 – The seventh round of the FIM Motocross World Championship is heading back to the legendary Maggiora Park this weekend for the MXGP of Italy.

Last season, Maggiora Park made its much-anticipated return to the MXGP calendar, after closing its doors in late 2016. In that time, the well-known Italian circuit was revived and made its World Championship return, re-introducing a beloved old-school traditional circuit with some modernised touches.

The hillside track based in the north of Italy has a rich history having hosted numerous FIM Motocross World Championship events since the late 60’s, including the most memorable 1970, 1986 and 2016 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations.

Maggiora stats & facts:

  • First GP hosted in 1966 and was won by Paul Friedrichs
  • Host of the legendary 1970, 1986 & 2016 Monster Energy FIM MXoN
  • 10 GP’s hosted in total since 1966 – this year will be the 11th!
  • Jeffrey Herlings has won the most GPs in Maggiora than any other rider (3 – 2013, 2014 & 2021)

Joining the MXGP and MX2 riders this weekend will be the EMX categories with rounds three and four of the EMX250 and EMX Open Championships. In EMX250, after two rounds Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Rick Elzinga leads the championship with 93 points over Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cornelius Toendel and Oriol Oliver of WZ Racing. Elzinga has won both of the first two rounds in Lombardia and Portugal, so it will be interesting to see if he can carry on his winning streak, or whether a new rider will rise to the occasion.

Meanwhile in EMX Open, just a point separates Raths Motorsports’ Michael Sandner and Jose Butron from JD Gunnex KTM Racing Team in the championship standings, after Sandner’s DNF in race one at the Latvian round saw him in danger of losing the red plate. Butron will enter the Italian round following his first overall victory of the season, so it will be interesting to see whether he can repeat his success and take control of the series.

As we head into round seven of the series, news broke that defending world champion Jeffrey Herlings of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing will sit out the remainder of the season. Herlings will undergo two corrective surgeries and will instead focus his efforts on being ready for 2023. Meanwhile there is still no news on Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre and his return.

At the moment Team HRC’s Tim Gajser is in the driving season of the championship and after the perfect scorecard in Latvia last weekend and his fifth GP win of the season, the Slovenian will be looking to continue his winning streak and deliver a much more positive result this time around in Maggiora, compared to last year’s 5-6 scorecard for seventh overall.

Gajser has previously won in Maggiora back in 2015 though this was in MX2, and he is yet to win in the MXGP category at the hillside venue. As it stands, Gajser currently leads all of the stats so far in terms of pole positions, laps led, race wins, GP victories and podiums, therefore having him as a top contender for the win this weekend wouldn’t be that surprising.

Of course, his closest title rival and the rider who follows him in all of those stats is Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado. Prado will be looking to bounce back after a disastrous weekend in Kegums. A 12th and 13th in the races saw Prado now drop to 66 points behind Gajser, so maximum points will be needed for the Spaniard in order to not lose grip on his chance to go for his first MXGP championship.

Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass will enter the Italian Grand Prix off the back of a very successful weekend on home soil that saw him battle at the front of the field and challenging Gajser for race wins on his way to his first podium of 2022. In the end Jonass confirmed he needed to “keep his feet on the ground” which was a very mature decision by the Latvian, in order to deliver a solid result rather than risk it all. Now having had a race weekend where he was consistently fighting with the championship leaders, this should give him confidence for the rest of the year and it will be interesting to see how he can follow up with that.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff was among the three riders that were tied on points for the GP victory last season in Maggiora. The Dutchman finished on 40 points alongside Red KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Antonio Cairoli, with Herlings’ race two victory eventually overruling the scores of the other two riders. Having those memories will be a bonus for Coldenhoff who has been building for a podium finish this season and has been looking strong ever since Portugal where he won the qualifying race and has been close to a spot on the box ever since.

His teammates Maxime Renaux and Jeremy Seewer have also been in the mix at the sharp end consistently. Though when it comes to looking at the numbers, Renaux is currently the most successful rider on the team this season, if we measure ‘success’ by podium finishes, which the Frenchman has three under his belt compared to Seewer’s one. Seewer also revealed that he struggled in Latvia, as did Renaux, so it would be good to see the pair back at the top this time around.

Honda 114 Motorsports Ruben Fernandez is a rider to watch this weekend. The Spaniard secured his first MXGP podium of his career in Latvia, going 3-4 for third overall. Now it will be interesting to see if that first podium will change anything for Fernandez and whether he can follow up with more.

Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis is on the entry list for the Italian Grand Prix and will hopefully make his come back after missing the last four GPs. Looking at the current entry list, Beta SDM Corse’s Alessandro Lupino will also return to racing

Making a wildcard appearance for this GP will be David Philippaerts who is a usual regular when it comes to racing the Italian GP’s.

Home rider Alberto Forato of SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery will be looking to put on his best performance on home soil and continue delivering the strong results that he has been showing so far. He currently sits ninth in the championship standings which is pretty impressive. There are quite a few Italians to watch out for in general this weekend including Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Nicholas Lapucci and Filippo Zonta among quite a few others who will wildcard this weekend.

3. Antonio Cairoli (40 pts)

MXGP - World Championship Top 10 Classification: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 286 points; 2. Jorge Prado (ESP, GAS), 220 p.; 3. Maxime Renaux (FRA, YAM), 215 p.; 4. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 187 p.; 5. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, YAM), 177 p.; 6. Ruben Fernandez (ESP, HON), 163 p.; 7. Brian Bogers (NED, HUS), 154 p.; 8. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, BET), 140 p.; 9. Alberto Forato (ITA, GAS), 124 p.; 10. Pauls Jonass (LAT, HUS), 120 p.;

In MX2 things are getting interesting at the top of the championship standings as Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts took back the red plate in Latvia with a clean 1-1 overall victory, though he remains tied on points with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle. So, it’s back to square one for the pair, as they basically start from zero, which should make for some very interesting racing.

In Latvia, Geerts was on top of his game and keen on making up for lost ground in Trentino where a DNF saw him lose the championship lead. Meanwhile, Vialle struggled to find his rhythm all weekend long in Kegums, so will be looking to bring his A game this weekend and take maximum points. Last year the MXGP of Italy was not the best for Vialle, who after getting injured a few weeks prior, only managed a few laps of the races.

What would be nice to see this weekend is something special from Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini. Last season, Guadagnini had a dream weekend in Maggiora, winning a race and then subsequently winning the GP (his very first one and on home soil) as well as taking the red plate! Of course, expectations are going to be high this weekend, as the Italian is yet to finish on the podium this year and this weekend could be his best opportunity to do it.

The second Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing rider Simon Längenfelder is currently third in the championship, sitting on the same points as Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf and Big Van World MTX Kawasaki’s Mikkel Haarup. Since his podium in Great Britain, Längenfelder has come close to the podium, but consistency its what’s letting him down lately. Meanwhile, de Wolf has also had some very solid results this year, he’s been on the podium twice but has also had a couple of races, where consistency was the reason why he narrowly missed out on a spot on the box. Either way both Längenfelder and de Wolf are still a pair to watch out for this weekend.

Meanwhile Haarup had a tough weekend in Latvia after an unavoidable crash, on a landing of a jump where another rider had already fallen, took him out of the running for his fourth consecutive podium. Before that, Haarup was running well and had presented himself as a real threat at the sharp end, so hopefully he can bounce back this weekend and see the beginning of another podium streak.

F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Kevin Horgmo had a near perfect weekend in Kegums and continued the team’s success in Latvia, securing his first podium in MX2 with second overall. Horgmo led an impressive 11 laps of the second race, before getting caught by Geerts, nonetheless, the Norwegian showed that he is fast enough, fit enough and most importantly confident enough to lead races which is a huge confidence boost in itself. It will be interesting to see what the next race has in store and whether the result in Kegums will be like a springboard for Horgmo for the rest of the season.

The Italian GP this weekend will also be a home round for SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery’s Andrea Adamo. Since his podium in Mantova, Adamo has struggled to put together two consistent results. Also not scoring points in race two at the MXGP of Trentino didn’t help his overall standings as he currently sits in 8th behind Guadagnini. A home GP is usually special for any rider, so hopefully that extra boost of motivation to perform well on home soil will see Adamo fighting with the leaders once again.

Gianluca Facchetti of Team Beddini Racing KTM is also on the entry list, along with another local rider Daniel Gimm who will make a wildcard appearance this weekend.

Valk and Butron Top the Box at the Latvian Round of EMX!

KEGUMS (Latvia) 24 April 2022 – The third rounds of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX Open Championship have concluded, with Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cas Valk and JD Gunnex KTM Racing’s Jose Butron taking the overall victories at the round of Latvia.

A victory for Valk has allowed him to take control of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing series lead, while Butron has closed in to Raths Motorsport’s Michael Sandner who lost a tone of points after not finishing the opening race and now leads by just a point.

But it was a dream day for Karlis Alberts Reisulis of Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC and his brother Janis Martins Reisulis as the duo challneged at the sharp end in both races, to end their day second and third on the podium, giving the Latvian fans something to cheer about!

In EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing heat one, it was Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Alexis Fueri who led the way ahead of Maximilian Werner, Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC’s Ivano Van Erp and Laban Alm, as Karlis Alberts Reisulis of Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC got himself into fourth. His brother, Janis Martins Reisulis also started well in sixth and had the leaders well in his sights.

Werner then came under immense pressure, as Van Erp was pushing to get by. The Dutchman managed a very brief pass, before Werner fought back. At the same moment Karlis Reisulis sensed his opportunity and got by Van Erp.

Van Erp then crashed out of third, as Janis Reisulis passed Alm to take fourth. In the meantime, Karlis Reisulis was able to get the better of Werner and put on a charge for the leader, Fueri.

On lap three, Karlis Reisulis was the new race leader, as Fueri suffered a problem with his starting device, which jammed the front of his forks. The Frenchman lost a few positions as Janis Reisulis and Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cas Valk also went by. Luckily for Fueri, the issue managed itself fairly quickly and he was able to get back into the race and try to re-group.

On the fifth lap, we saw Janis Reisulis make a pass on Werner and from then on we were treated to a very interesting brotherly battle as the Reisulis brothers, and local heroes, led the race.

Werner then dropped another spot to Valk by the following lap, as Janis Reisulis put on a charge of his brother. Four laps from the end, Janis Reisulis was able to make a pass stick, which saw him become the new race leader.

In the end, Janis went on to win ahead of his brother Karlis, with Valk crossing the line third ahead of Van Erp who put on a strong performance to fight back to fourth ahead of Ferruccio Zanchi of Yamaha Europe EMX125 MJC’s.

In race two, Valk led the way after getting a good start and was followed by Zanchi, Van Erp, Mathias Valin and the two Reisulis brother, Janis and Karlis.

Van Erp was fired up in the first lap to get around Zanchi though came short in the end. At this point Janis Reisulis was looking to join the battle too, as Valk began to pull away and focus on his own race.

Van Erp then pushed Zanchi wide, and as a result the Italian lost a couple of positions as Janis and Karlis Reisulis went by. Valk then led by around 2.6 seconds, as Karlis began to take a load of time out of his brother Janis ahead.

Fueri didn’t have the best start to the race as he made his way up the order to 10th place. He eventually managed to fight back to seventh.

On lap six, Karlis passed his brother Janis for third and then a lap later took second from Van Erp, who then had Janis all over his case, as also Zanchi looked to close in.

Towards the closing stages of the race, Van Erp looked to get by Karlis Reisulis and as the pair battled on, Zanchi made the most of this opportunity, passing both to come back to second!

Valk ended up winning the race by more than 16 seconds, with Zanchi second and Karlis Reisulis third ahead of Van Erp and Janis Reisulis.

A 2-1 result gave Valk the overall and also allowed him to take back the red plate, while Karlis Reisulis and Janis Reisulis gave the Latvian fans something to cheer about, as they finished second and third on the podium!

Valk now leads the championship by 23 points over Fueri, with Karlis Reisulis a further 6 points behind in third.

The next round of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing will take place in intu Xanadú – Arroyomolinos on the 28th and 29th of May for the Round of Spain.

Cas Valk: “Yesterday I struggled a little bit to get my rhythm but today I finally took the holeshot and just had the perfect race, leading the whole heat and then eventually winning with quite a big gap is really nice. The track was slippery, but I enjoyed it and I'm really happy right now”.

In the first EMX Open race of the weekend, it was Jose Butron of JD Gunnex who grabbed the holeshot and led Nico Koch from Schmicker Racing, Giuseppe Tropepe of Millionair Racing Team, Michael Sandner of Raths Motorsports and Gert Krestinov.

Tropepe then passed Nico Koch to take away second, as Krestinov slid down the inside of the German too, to push him down to fourth.

On lap two, series leader, Sandner crashed out, getting caught up by Erki Kahro with Sandner’s unable to carry on with the race after getting banged up and his bike bent too. Kahro was able to carry on and finished 23rd.

Mico Vettik then made a mistake trying to pass up to 8th, which as a result cost him several positions. Though he was able to recover by the end of the race too, to finish in a solid 5th.

Back with the leaders though, Butron was just 1.231 seconds ahead of Tropepe who was making a charge for the leader after setting the fastest lap of the race. On lap four, Tropepe passed for the lead and started to pull away, with Butron unable to match his pace.

Jere Haavisto was looking strong at the mid-way part of the race, as he passed Jens Getteman of F4E GASGAS Racing Team, as Getteman began to struggle with what looked like arm-pump. Haavisto continued to fight up the order.

Tropepe carried on his triumph at the front, as he continued to escape the grip of Butron, though his pass on the Spaniard was taken under review as it was revealed that the Italian made the move during a waved yellow flag, failing to slow down and then subsequently jumped on this yellow flag too. As a result, Tropepe was docked 10 positions, which put him down in 11th place, while Butron was declared the winner.

Krestinov moved up to second, while Haavisto finished third ahead of Tom Kohut of Osicka MX Team and Vettik.

As the gate dropped for race two on Sunday, it was Vettik who took the holeshot as Haavisto and Tropepe got themselves into second and third. Vettik was looking strong in the lead at the start of the race, though he and Haavisto came together, which put Vettik on the deck and Haavisto into the lead.

Sandner started the race in fourth, with Butron down in around seventh position, as Vettik pished through the field on his way to re-grouping and getting the best result possible.

Krestinov was looking strong in fourth behind Sandner, as the Estonian looked to be on a charge. He briefly got into third, before his bike began to smoke. It looked like it was coming from his radiator which ultimately forced him out of the race and out of the running for a podium finish.

Kohut then passed Koch for fifth, as Vettik began to close in on the pair too. By lap four, Vettik was already in sixth and then two laps later managed to pass Kohut too.

At around half-way mark of the race, Tropepe began to close the gap rapidly to the leader, Haavisto. Within a lap, the Italian managed to take more than a second out of the Finnish rider and on lap 8 took away the lead.

Just behind them, Sandner and Butron were locked in a battle of their own, as not only they battle for top positions but also the championship, as they were separated by just a point.

The pair set their fastest laps of the race in the last lap, though Sandner was able to hold on to third. Tropepe won the race ahead of Haavisto.

A 1-4 result put Butron on the top step of the podium for the first time this season, with Haavisto finishing second and Tropepe third.

After three rounds, Sandner remains the series leader by just 1 point, ahead of Butron and Kohut who is third with 91 points.

The next round of the EMX Open championship will take place in Maggiora in one week for the Round of Italy.

Jose Butron: “I came to this race with one race down in the championship and now I leave closing the gap. In the second race, I didn’t get a good start and with the rain it was more difficult but I’m really happy, we still have three races so we will keep going”.
