Seewer and de Wolf Win Qualifying in Sandy Lommel

LOMMEL (Belgium) 23 July 2022 – The first day of racing at the MXGP of Flanders has concluded with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf victorious in the deep sandy conditions of Lommel.

The riders were tested to a brand-new layout of the very well-known Lommel circuit, that is a popular stomping ground for much of the paddock. One of the biggest changes is the new first corner, which goes right instead of left and the direction of the track which has already made for some interesting racing this weekend so far.

Alongside the main FIM Motocross World Championship action we also saw the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX250 races one, which were won by Julius Mikula and Lucas Coenen of Jumbo Husqvarna BT Racing Team.

In the MXGP category, it was Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer who grabbed the holeshot ahead of Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Harri Kullas, Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre.

Gajser quickly got by Kullas and Prado to move into second place, with his teammate Mitch Evans doing the same to get himself up to third. Kullas then dropped down to seventh.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux started down in around 11th, while Seewer pushed his lead to 2.153 seconds over Gajser, Evans and Prado.

Febvre then flew by Prado as he took over fourth position and began to set his sights on Evans who was having a great race. Though not long after, Evans made a big mistake as he jumped the triple and lost his legs on the take off. The Aussie crashed big and took Febvre down with him who caught his bike.

Prado, Coldenhoff and later Vlaanderen got by Febvre, as Seewer went on to win the qualifying heat for the second weekend on the bounce. Gajser finished second, with Prado third while Vlaanderen passed Coldenhoff for fourth in the final laps.

Beta SDM Corse rider Jeremy Van Horebeek did not line-up for the qualifying race today due to illness, though is planning to do the races tomorrow, depending on his condition, to give his home fans something to cheer about.

Jeremy Seewer: “I really enjoyed the qualifying race and a good start helped. And then I just stayed in my own rhythm, enjoyed the triple, was bouncing around and really felt good on the bike. It’s amazing to go back-to-back with wins on Saturday. The races are tomorrow but at least this gives me a good feeling and confidence and I’m just looking forward to the racing”.

In MX2 qualifying, it was Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf who grabbed the holeshot despite not getting the best jump out of the gate. The Dutchman led the way ahead of SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery’s Andrea Adamo, Team VRT KTM VERITISE’s Tom Guyon and Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Roan van de Moosdijk.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle, along with F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo and Liam Everts of DIGA Procross KTM Racing got unlucky in the first corner, as they went down, with Vialle not carrying on with the rest of the heat.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts was another rider who struggled in the start but made his way up to fifth and then set his focus on Adamo just ahead. Shortly after he was able to get it done and move into fourth.

While de Wolf led the way, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant was the rider in second position who was looking fast after setting the fastest lap of the race. He was however 4.124 seconds down on the leader.

de Wolf stretched his lead out even further, as Geerts took third from Moosdijk and Everts made a stellar recovery to find his way up to 10th. The Belgian finished the race 8th.

In the final stages of the race, the battle for the win intensified, as de Wolf and Benistant set their personal best laps of the race, while Geerts clocked the fastest lap time of the heat.

In the end, de Wolf was unmatched as he won the heat by 8.784 seconds over Benistant and Geerts. Moosdijk was fourth on his first race back from injury, with Adamo finishing in solid fifth.

Kay de Wolf: “I took the holeshot, didn’t actually expect it and I think three or four riders went down in the start. The holeshot wasn’t easy, because my start wasn’t that good but I cut back and got it and led the whole race, just did my own thing, so that felt really good!”.

Roan van de Moosdijk to Return at the MXGP of Flanders

Roan van de Moosdijk of the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing team will return to racing at the fourteenth stop of the 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship, the Grand Prix of Flanders, this weekend. It has been a long road for van de Moosdijk, who bowed out of the campaign with multiple injuries that were sustained at round three in March.

With support from the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing squad, van de Moosdijk took the time necessary to fully recovery from his fall at the Grand Prix of Patagonia-Argentina and climbed back onto his FC 250 a month ago. Now, following some productive test sessions, he is ready to join his teammate on the toughest sand track in the world.

With Roan van de Moosdijk underneath the awning again, Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing will be at full strength at this weekend's Grand Prix. Kay de Wolf is keen to leap into the sand, especially after winning a moto at Lommel one year ago, and Maxime Grau will compete in EMX250.

Roan van de Moosdijk: "It has been a very tough injury, but everything has gone really well and I will be back at Lommel. It has been a good few weeks on my FC 250 and I am looking forward to racing in the FIM Motocross World Championship again. I will head into the sand without any expectations and then try to build for the rest of the season. Thanks to the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing team for sticking behind me."

Deep Sand of Lommel Ready to test the MXGP riders!

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 20 July 2022 – From the hard-pack of Loket, the FIM Motocross World Championship heads to the deep sand of Lommel for this year’s edition of the MXGP of Flanders.

The Belgian Grand Prix has always been iconic, no matter which circuit it took place at, but Lommel is one that any rider hopes to win at some stage of their career. Known to be one of the toughest sand circuits in the world, the Stedelijk Motorcrossterrein Lommel vzw track is a popular playing ground for the FIM Motocross World Championship stars, with many of the teams based close by, meaning that most of the riders know the track inside out which makes the competition this weekend even more fierce!

Alongside the regular MXGP and MX2 action, we will also see rounds seven of the EMX250 and EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing Championships that are currently headed by Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing's Rick Elzinga and Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Cas Valk.

All eyes will be on Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer who will enter the MXGP of Flanders off the back of a second Grand Prix victory this season, which would make it his best GP season in MXGP to date. Despite illness at the Indonesian round, the Swiss has been on top form lately and has five podiums and three race wins to his name so far, including those two GP victories. Though the Yamaha rider is yet to stand on the top step at the GP in Lommel, but maybe this season he could make it happen.

A rider that will no doubt be in the running for the top step is Team HRC’S Tim Gajser who enters the 14th round with a 125-point advantage over Seewer in the championship standings. This is the perfect position for Gajser to be in, meaning that he will not be riding under pressure. Gajser won the GP in Lommel in 2019 and twice in 2022, though last year was beaten by Kawasaki Racing Team MXGP’s Romain Febvre.

Last weekend in Czech Republic, Febvre was among the few riders who were missing on the start gate of the second race. After having a rough couple of days due to an illness, the Frenchman decided to not line up for the second heat and instead give his body some rest. This would be Febvre’s fourth race from injury, so a victory on such a tough sand track may be a lot to expect, but that does not take him out of the running either, as he proved just how strong he was in Lommel last year.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux surprised many with his comeback at the MXGP of Czech Republic as the Frenchman went on to win the second race and stood tall on the second step of the podium. Many did not expect such a turnaround and his strong performance took many by surprise but it will be interesting to see what he can do this weekend and whether he can repeat his success of 2021 and get on the podium once again.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff and Jorge Prado of Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing are also serious podium contenders and have proven to be strong sand riders in previous races. Coldenhoff will be looking to make his return to the box, after missing out in the last three GP’s after building a nice streak in Sardinia, Spain and France. Meanwhile Prado will need to work further on his strength as he struggled in Czech Republic towards the mid-part of the races.

Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing’s Calvin Vlaanderen not doubt earned his seat at the table after his impressive stint in Sardinia, where he not only topped the charts in each practice session, but also won every single race that weekend. Vlaanderen showed that he is one skilled sand rider, which will come in very handy this weekend and it could be another occasion that we see the Yamaha rider finish on the box.

Pauls Jonass of Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing had a tough weekend in Loket, after placing 12th in race one and not finishing the second race due to a crash. Though last year the Latvian finished on the podium in Lommel so another trip to the box could be pending.

Unfortunately, both of the Honda 114 Motorsports riders Ruben Fernandez and Haakon Fredriksen will be missing at the MXGP of Flanders, after picking up injuries at the previous round in Loket. Their return is not yet known.

Home riders Jeremy Van Horebeek of Beta SDM Corse, as well as Brent van Doninck of Riley Racing Yamaha and Cyril Genot of Ship to Cycle Honda SR Motoblouz will be looking to put on their best performance on home soil and another trio to keep an eye out for.

This weekend there is no doubt that all eyes will be on Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts who will line-up at his home Grand Prix with the red plate! After winning the MXGP of Czech Republic last weekend, Geerts now leads the MX2 championship standings by eighth points over his closest rivals Tom Vialle of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing.

Not only is Geerts the championship leader and last weekend’s GP winner, but he is also the MXGP of Flanders victor from last season too, which means there will be only one thing on his mind this weekend, and that is – winning!

Though it will be interesting to see if the desire to win will affect him in any way, as we all know, riding under pressure is never good and could give the upper hand to Vialle if Geerts is not careful. So far in 2022, we have seen the red plate change eight times, which means any minor mistakes cannot be afforded by either one of the title hopefuls.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Thibault Benistant will also be another favourite for the weekend after his success this season so far. The Frenchman has five podiums under his belt, which includes a GP victory and three race wins too. Benistant has proven he has what it takes to run with the leaders, and it will be nice to see what he has in store for us in Belgium.

There is no doubt that among the list of the strongest sand-riders on the grid includes Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay de Wolf who was a podium finisher at the MXGP of Flanders last season. Born in Holland just over the border, de Wolf is no stranger to the deep sand and could challenge Geerts and Vialle for race victories this weekend. Last year a race win helped him onto the second step of the podium, with the Dutchman just two points shy of the GP victory, but maybe he can get it done this time around?

Last weekend’s podium finisher Simon Längenfelder of Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing is also in the running for the podium and the confidence from being on the box in Loket could be the boost he needs to succeed in Lommel. In 2019, Längenfelder was the winner in the EMX125 category which means he has what it takes to win on the sand track. But the competition will be fierce.

Looking at the entry lists there is one name that we did not see for a while and that is Roan Van de Moosdijk of Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing who is set to make his return to racing after picking up an injury in Argentina. Van de Moosdijk is another strong sand rider and it will be interesting to see what results he can deliver on his first world championship outing since recovery.

Diga Procross KTM Racing’s Liam Everts will be looking for some top scores this weekend as he enters his home Grand Prix. This season, Everts has had some very strong races that saw him battle inside the top 10 and the top five on numerous occasions and hopefully he can bring this level of competition this weekend to his home round and give the Belgian fans something more to cheer about.
