Herlings & Prado Victorious in Turkey

AFYON (Turkey) 8 September 2019 – The MXGP of Turkey proved to be brilliant under perfect weather conditions and in front of a large crowd as the best motocross riders in the World performed at their very best. The penultimate round of the FIM Motocross World Championship marked the 85th GP win of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, his first GP win of the season on a hard park track he fitted very well. Herlings won the MXGP of Turkey in the MXGP class with 1-1 results, while second was fellow Dutchman Standing Construct KTM team Glenn Coldenhoff with 3-2 and third Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass with 2-5.

In the MX2 class it was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who once again went 1-1 for his 30th GP win of his career, while Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha MX2’s Jago Geerts was second overall with 2-5 and third was F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk who went 5-3.

In the first MXGP race, it was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass who took his first FOX Holeshot of the season and led from Standing Construct KTM team rider Glenn Coldenhoff, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team’sJeremy Seewer and Team HRC’s Tim Gajser. Further back was Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP Arnaud Tonus, Team HRC’s Brian Bogers, Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki team rider Alessandro Lupino, JWR Yamaha Racing team’s Kevin Strijbos and Honda SR Motoblouz rider Jeremy Van Horebeek.

Herlings quickly moved into second place, and Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin entered the top ten in ninth position. Herlings took the lead as the riders entered the second lap while Gajser moved into fourth place, then went down hard and dropped well back in 14th position.

Three laps in and the lead by Herlings was two seconds from Jonass, followed by Coldenhoff. Seewer was fourth and Bogers in fifth place. While Herlings led, Jonass, Coldenhoff and Seewer were not letting the KTM rider get too far ahead with just three seconds separating the top four.

After seven laps Herlings had opened the lead up to two seconds over Jonass, and Gajser moved back into the top ten as he rounded in 10th place while Tonus moved past Bogers for fifth, and Gajser did the same to move into ninth position. Paulin and Van Horebeek also both passed Bogers.

After 10 laps the lead by Herlings was three seconds over Jonass but Herlings made a mistake and slipped over while Jonass caught right up to his back wheel.

Gajser back into seventh place as he passed both Bogers and Van Horebeek and he managed to finish in 6thposition while Paulin moved into fifth place. Jeffrey Herlings wins his second race of the season from Jonass and Coldenhoff.

The second MXGP gate dropped and Coldenhoff led from Seewer and Herlings, with Gajser in fourth and Bogers in fifth place.  Herlings was quickly past Seewer, who dropped to sixth place, and Gajser moved to third on the first lap.

Seewer crashed hard and dropped to 16thposition and after three laps it was Coldenhoff, Herlings, Gajser, Monticelli, and Bogers rounding up the top five. Standing Construct KTM team’s Ivo Monticelli passed Gajser for third place, as the World MXGP champion crashed and dropped to fifth position.

Herlings was all over the leader Coldenhoff for the lead on lap seven, as the two Dutch riders showed they are in great form for the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in three-week’s time. Bogers and Jonass had battled with Jonass moving into fifth and Bogers dropped back to sixth.

Herlings started reeling in Coldenhoff for the lead and on lap 10 they were locked together while Gajser moved into third place followed by Monticelli and Jonass. Coldenhoff continued to lead, but Herlings was hounding him, and Gajser was 23 seconds further back in third place. A few seconds before the end of the race a sensational pass was made by Herlings as he took the lead on the final lap and took the third race win of the season and the GP overall for the first time in 2019.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team's Tommy Searle after a crash during the warm up on Sunday morning wasn’t able to race this 17th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship and he was forced to withdraw from the race.

Tommy Searle posted the twelfth fastest lap in both practice sessions on Saturday and later qualified in eleventh position for the GP. But during the warm up on Sunday morning Tommy crashed and suffered a shoulder contusion which forced him to withdraws from the GP. Tommy Searle normally will be back on track next weekend in China for the final round of the 2019 championship.

Jeffrey Herlings: “It is getting better and better, in Sweden I wasn’t that prepared, but now just after three weeks on the bike, it is amazing what I can do. It has been a crazy weekend and I am super happy with my win. I had that line and I knew I had to make it perfect. I want to thank my mum the team and everyone who supported me and I wish to congratulate Glenn, he rode amazingly.”

Glenn Coldenhoff: “We are close to the end of the Championship and I really need those points as I still have a chance for third in the standings. I’m pushing hard for that. I don’t like to get passed on the last lap but it’s really amazing to see two Dutch flags on the box so I am really happy.”

Pauls Jonass: “We have been working hard with the team and it’s been a tough year, but finally I am feeling better and better and it’s nice to get back to back podiums. I made some mistakes but I feel good and look forward to the last GP in China.”

Prado won MX2 Race 1 from Geerts and Vlaanderen.

Prado led the second MX2 race, this time from Vialle, Evans, Geerts, Van De Moodsijk, Boisrame, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Sterry and Pichon. After a lap it was Prado, Vialle, Geerts, Renaux, Van De Moosdijk, Evans, Vlaanderen, Pichon and Sterry.

The lead was six seconds on lap six and the top ten was Prado, Vialle, Van De Moosdijk, Renaux, Vlaanderen, Geerts, Evans, Sterry, Forato, and Guadagini in 10th. Sterry worked his way past Evans for seventh place, and on lap nine the lead was 10 seconds.

Vlaanderen made a mistake and lost ground on Van De Moosdijk and Renaux and then he lost a place to Geerts who pushed past the South African. Bike It DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan was crowned Women’s Motocross World Champion with victory in the today’s opening race. In the EMX2T championship presented by FMF Racing it was Team JK Racing Yamaha’s Manuel Iacopi who took the opening race win in the class, but the big story is between Verde Substance KTM team’s Brad Anderson and Ecomaxx Fuels Mike Kras, Anderson finishing second and Kras third, meaning that tomorrow morning’s final race of the year will decide the championship, with Anderson just a couple of points clear of Kras.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser took the lead early in the MXGP qualification race from Standing Construct KTM Glenn Coldenhoff, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team’s Jeremy Seewer, Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki team rider Alessandro Lupino, and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings in fifth. Gajser crashed and handed the lead to Coldenhoff, and Seewer and Herlings also both passed the new MXGP champion as Herlings was all over Seewer for second place. Gajser found himself eventually back in seventh position and dropped back slowly.

Herlings looked brilliant closing on Seewer and Coldenhoff until he moved past Seewer and set out after Coldenhoff on lap eight while Gajser dropped out of the top ten as he continued to struggle.

The two Dutch riders were in a brilliant battle for the top spot as Herlings was closing right up on the back wheel of Coldenhoff. Seewer was third and Monticelli fourth. The pace of MXGP was just incredible with the two leaders colliding but continued their charge up front with only 1 second separating the Dutch riders. Coldenhoff won his first Qualifying race of the season from Herlings and Seewer.

Glenn Coldenhoff: “I had a good start and I was behind Tim, I kept focusing and in some places I was faster. Then he went down and then Herlings was pushing me. It was fun battling with him and I won, which is always good.”

Thanks to the pubic institutions, our President, the Ministry of Sport and the Turkish Federation who gave a significant contribution”

Afyonkarahisar Mayor Mehmet Zeybek: “Afyonkarahisar Motorsports Center has been prepared by both the federation and Afyonkarahisar Municipality to meet the standards of our country's international sports organizations. Our track, built on an area of 250-thousand square meters, received “The Best Infrastructure Award” last year. Here we are happy to have the Motocross World Championship once again. I welcome both riders and teams to come to our city.”

Head Provincial Council of Afyonkarahisar Burhanettin Coban: “I noticed in a race in Belgium that one of the 10 most popular sports branches in the world was motocross and we started to build a world-class motocross track in our province. In 2018, we decided to host the Motocross World Championship in Afyonkarahisar and it was a great race last year. This year we will do our best to make it work even better”

F&H KAWASAKI, RACING IN GREEN

The F&H Racing Team and Kawasaki have claimed their first important title together; the Dutch squad has won the FIM European EMX250 title with Roan van de Moosdijk in only their fifth racing season.

Created five years ago by Harry Fase, the F&H Kawasaki team soon became a respected force in the GP motocross paddock; with the European title and strong performances in the MX2 World Championship they are now established as one of the main teams. “Everything started as my father dreamt of racing motocross when he was young but he never had the opportunity! My brother started riding later and my father’s dream was always to help kids so he started to sponsor several riders when his own F&H business was solidly established; then five years ago he decided to start his own team. We have advanced step-by-step, first in EMX 125, then EMX 250 and finally in the MX2 World Championship two years ago. We already had a couple of good results last year with our first GP podium and this year we have both riders in the top six and Roan van de Moosdijk claimed the European title two weeks ago so we’re very happy,” explained Harry's daughter Nathalie Fase who operates as team manager.

Team F&H has been supported by Kawasaki Europe for several years and the two parties have established a strong relationship. “Since we moved to the 250 class we have always raced Kawasaki; my father has a Green heart and when my brother was racing it was already with a Kawasaki. We develop the bike within the team so we’re sure that all our development and our ideas stay in-house. Our main goal is to battle for the MX2 title and we have shown with Henry Jacobi and Adam Sterry that our bikes are competitive with the other brands,” continued Nathalie. Lining up three riders this season and contesting all rounds of the MX2 World Championship, the team has many sponsors and partners behind them. “We have many sponsors behind us that are not familiar to motocross fans as they are partners of our company F&H Crone, which has been producing boilers for the horticultural industry for fifteen years. We try to develop a mix between these companies and the MX world and it’s working pretty well; many of these sponsors didn’t know what motocross was but they have become real enthusiasts and every year we invite them to the races and even organise a special event in Assen.”

Natalie is one of the few women working in the motocross paddock along with former Kawasaki rider Livia Lancelot. “It’s a man's world, but for me that’s not a problem as everything is very clear if you do your job. I think everybody respects me though for sure at the beginning it was a little strange because I was one of the few women to work in the sport. For me it’s not a hobby but a job and we all work as hard as we need to as a team to reach our goals; I enjoy the challenge very much. I’m pretty busy as I have another job during the week but in our family we have always been working hard as there was not much money in the house; that’s the way our dad has brought us up,” she revealed.

Next season Roan van de Moosdijk will advance to the MX2 World Championship with the team, and they have offered Roan a great opportunity to prepare for the new challenge as he will enter the final two rounds of the series this weekend in Turkey and one week later in China. “Roan is moving up with us to MX2; he already showed us what he is capable of in Portugal and it’s important for him to race these two GPs to prepare for the future and discover what an overseas event is like. He has a huge potential, and for sure it’s important for a Dutch team to have a Dutch rider racing with us as we have many Dutch sponsors.”
