Outstanding End to the 2019 Season in Shanghai

SHANGHAI (China) 15 September 2019 – In front of a packed crowd and under beautiful weather conditions the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship Season comes to the end. The 2019 MXGP season was just epic and the Final Round at the brand new Shanghai Off road circuit represented a milestone for the Motocross history. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings won his second MXGP Overall of the season while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado made a statement winning the last round of the season, both Red Bull KTM Factory racing riders will be remembered as the first to get the Chinese Overall.

Being the last round of the season, the Shanghai off road international circuit also witnessed the conclusion of one of the most spectacular seasons ever. Taking the Top three spots in the final MXGP Championship standings were Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer and Standing Construct KTM’s Glenn Coldenhoff while in MX2 class Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen and Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha’s Jago Geerts finalized the MX2 Championship standings.

In the opening MXGP race it was Standing Construct KTM’s Glenn Coldenhoff who led from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass. Herlings was quickly into third place and relegating the MXGP champion to fourth. After a lap the battle for first place between Coldenhoff and Seewer was intense, with Herlings three seconds back in third.

Seewer had passed Coldenhoff but was repassed and then crashed in a corner as Herlings moved into second place. Seewer again crashed as he dropped to seventh place. Coldenhoff continued to control the race, although after five laps the lead was down to just over two seconds and Gajser was five seconds back in third place while the two Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis and Pauls Jonass filled the remaining top five positions. Seewer was sixth, Standing Construct KTM’s Ivo Monticelli seventh, Honda Motoblouz’Jeremy Van Horebeek eight, Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin ninth and Team VRT’s Jordi Tixier in 10th.

After nine laps Herlings was just over two seconds behind Coldenhoff and made a move for the lead. 11 laps in and Paulin dropped back to eight while Tixier moved into ninth place.

Herlings was suddenly all over Coldenhoff as the race heated up and to make it even more exciting, Gajser joined the party. For a couple of laps the big three battled for the top spot, and the pace clearly went to another gear.

MXGP came alive again as Coldenhoff tried to fight off Herlings and Gajser. Coldenhoff hung in there to win it from Herlings and Gajser.

The second MXGP gate dropped and Seewer took the FOX Holeshot, but got passed by Coldenhoff who lead again, Gajser was in third, then was Van Horebeek, Herlings, Bogers, Jonass, Paulin, Monticelli and Jasikonis who rounded up the top 10. Herlings quickly passed Van Horebeek and was onto Gajser for third.

After a lap Coldenhoff was a second and a half ahead of Seewer who was fighting off Gajser, with Herlings fourth and Van Horebeek fifth. Tixier had worked his way into 10th place as Jasikonis dropped to 12th.

After three laps the lead remained a little over a minute while Gajser miscalculating a jump ran off the track, having to pull the board from his machine and lost places to Herlings, Van Horebeek and Jonass as he dropped to sixth position. On lap nine Gajser passed Jonass for fifth, and Seewer was still a second and a half behind Coldenhoff.

Herlings was all over Seewer for second place as he tried to get an overall victory while Coldenhoff continued to ride in cruise control and at the pace he was comfortable. Herlings made a move to take second place from Seewer and the race of the Dutchman would continue.

Coldenhoff remained calm and continued to lead Herlings, with Seewer third, Van Horebeek fourth and Gajser fifth. After 14 laps Coldenhoff was nearly three-second lead over Herlings and seemingly did enough to win the race and the Grand Prix while Gajser passed Van Horebeek for fourth position. Herlings turned it up in the final three laps and caught Coldenhoff, then he pulled into the lead on the last lap as he won the Grand Prix with 2-1 results.

Red Bull KTM Factory Jeffrey Herlings has won the JUST1 MXGP OF CHINA presented by Hehui Investment Group with a stunning 2-1 result leading his Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations team-mate Standing Construct KTM's Glenn Coldenhoff who scored 1-2 results. Third overall was Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team’s Jeremy Seewer.

While Team HRC’s Tim Gajser climbed again the MXGP Podium to be awarded with the Gold Medal, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer celebrated the 18th round of the Championship with a silver media ensured just after race 1 and Standing Construct KTM’s Glenn Coldenhoff clinched the bronze medal after an unpredictable season.

Tim Gajser: “I am very happy to win my third World championship title. We had a great off-season, the beginning was just amazing and then I won seven rounds in a row which was so special. Now at the end of the season I am struggling and not finding the flow unfortunately. Coming to this weekend I felt good, yesterday I was fast on the track and enjoyed it. In the qualifying race I had the holeshot and then made a mistake and hit my neck and I was sore. From 11th gate pick today I took two solid starts and we were close to Jeffrey and Glenn. Second race I was feeling good but jumped off the track and unfortunately I just missed the podium”

Jeremy Seewer: “I felt really good all weekend on the track, and it was a really nice dirt today. I wasn’t going for the championship but I was pushing in the first race because I felt amazing, but things happen. I got a rock in my eye and then cut my chin when I crashed and I was fighting hard to get third position. I didn’t want to risk too much anymore. That’s amazing to get second in the championship. A big thank to my team for this season.”

Glenn Coldenhoff: “I feel like we did a great job this weekend. It was a solid start in the second race and I was second and led all the races, I started making mistakes and I was looking at the bigger picture that is the bronze medal and I got a podium, which was good. First race was great. I am so pumped, I knew I needed a great gate pick and I was able to hold of Jeffrey (Herlings) and Tim (Gajser).

Overall winner Jeffrey Herlings: “The first race I just couldn’t make to win but I am very thankful to win the last two races of the season and I am looking forward to next year. I wanted to save some energy in the first race, but the second race I missed the start a bit and it was a bit tricky. I managed to win it at the end, and I am pretty happy. I want to thank the team and my personal sponsors.”

The first ever visit of MXGP in China comes in an important year for the country as it celebrates the 70th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China.

At the last qualifying races of the Championship it was Standing Construct KTM’s Glenn Coldenhoff who took his second consecutive MXGP qualifying race win with a solid performance. The Dutch rider led home Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Arminas Jasikonis and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team’s Jeremy Seewer. In the MX2 qualification race it was again Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who took the win from Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle and Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen.

After the Qualifying day at the JUST1 MXGP OF CHINA presented by Hehui Investment Group a special welcome evening was organized by the Government of Shanghai. The whole MXGP Paddock was invited to Nine Trees Future Art Center which hosted a special concert featuring a truly breathtaking performance from the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra where Representatives from the Shanghai Government, Youthstream, FIM, Local Organizer, and MXGP Partners joined the MXGP and MX2 teams for a music show before taking tomorrow’s last round of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser led the MXGP qualifying race from Standing Construct KTM’s Glenn Coldenhoff, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team’s Jeremy Seewer, Red Bull KTM Factory Jeffrey Herlings and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Arminas Jasikonis. Standing Construct KTM’s Ivo Monticelli was sixth, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing Pauls Jonass next, then came Team HRC rider Brian Bogers, Honda SR Motoblouz’ Jeremy Van Horebeek, and Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin in 10th. Herlings dropped back to seventh place, and Gajser then went down hard in the lead and dropped back to ninth position. Gajser went down again as he rounded in 14th place.

Coldenhoff might have had the lead, but Jasikonis wasn’t letting the Dutchman get away. Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus pulled into the mechanics area, and Gajser moved into 11th place.

After four laps Coldenhoff led from Jasikonis by around two seconds, with Seewer third, Jonass fourth and Monticelli fifth. On lap six Jasikonis was all over Coldenhoff, with Seewer also closing on the two leaders. Herlings continued to trail in sixth position, and Gajser was 13th.

On lap nine Herlings passed Monticelli, and Coldenhoff started pulling away from Jasikonis and Seewer. Jasikonis and Seewer closed on Coldenhoff again in the last two laps and those three fought for the lead, with clocking the quickest laps and pulling up on Jonass in fourth. Coldenhoff won his second qualifying heat of the season it from Jasikonis and Seewer.

Glenn Coldenhoff: “I had a good start and it was actually similar to last week, when Gajser had the lead, had a crash and then Jasikonis was behind me. I have a good gate pick for tomorrow and the inside is very good for the start. I am 11 points down on Paulin for third in the championship. I was 22 points down last round, so if I do the same as next week I can get to third in the championship. Wherever I finish we are happy, but I would love to have that medal around my neck.”

After a lap Renaux had moved into second place, but Vialle was quickly back into the second spot after repassing his fellow Frenchman. Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts had moved into fourth place passing both Vlaanderen and Evans while Vlaanderen was up to seventh.

Prado had extended his lead to two seconds over Vialle, with Renaux third. Vialle wasn’t giving up in second place as he hounded Prado, the two KTM riders moving well away from Geerts who had moved into third when he passed Renaux.

Five laps in and Prado and Vialle remained in close combat, with Geerts third, Vlaanderen fourth and Renaux fifth. On lap six Vlaanderen passed Geerts for third place. Prado began to make a gap between himself and Vialle and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team’s Thomas Kjer Olsen moved past Harrison for ninth place. Geerts went down hard and lost a bunch of places, eventually getting up in eight position. Prado eventually took his 14th pole position out of 18 from Vialle and Vlaanderen.

Jorge Prado: "Like Glenn said, the inside gate has an advantage. I took the holeshot and I didn’t push too much in the early laps but then I found the better flow. It is good to train with the 450 and next week I will be back on the big bike. I am enjoying riding the big bike.”
