MXGP onto Turkey for Round 17

AFYON (Turkey) 5 September 2019 – The 17th round of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship heads to Afyonkarahisar for the MXGP of Turkey this coming weekend, before the series takes to China for the final round and while the MXGP and MX2 championships have been decided, this weekend we will find out who the EMX2T Presented by FMF Racing and the WMX champions will be. The FIM Motocross World Championship visited the hard pack circuit of Afyon last year for the first time with a great success.

WMX leader is Bike It DRT Kawasaki’s Courtney Duncan who won the last round in Imola, Italy, with 1-1 scores, she holds a 23-point lead going into Turkey. Second in the championship is Larissa Papenmeier and No Fear Yamaha team’s Nancy Van De Ven is third, both have a shot at beating the New Zealander, but it won’t be easy.

In the EMX2T presented by FMF Racing championship Verde Substance KTM team’s Brad Anderson and Ecomaxx Fuels Mike Kras are equal with 235 points each, so this final round will be exciting to say the least.

In the MXGP class, Standing Construct KTM’s Glenn Coldenhoff is going for his third straight Grand Prix victory, which is rather amazing and perfect preparation to lead into the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations at Assen at the end of September. Coldenhoff finished 7th in Tureky in 2008.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser felt very comfortable in Afyon in 2018 managing to finish second on the brand new track. It looks like the Slovenian continues his road to win GPs, despite already wrapping up his MXGP championship in Imola, so he might have something to say about Coldenhoff getting the triple treat. Gajser, who came close in Sweden for the GP win, wants to head to China for the final round with as much momentum as possible.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP's Jeremy Seewer remains second in the MXGP points standings, but without a GP win in 2019, you can be sure his goal is to stand on the top of the box in Turkey. Seewer had a decent 6th position in Afyon last year and he enters the weekend with 43 points ahead the Yamaha mate Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin who actually appreciated the Turkish tracks a lot finishing 4th in 2018 and second in the 2009 edition in Istanbul in MX2 class.

Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus has had a great season so far and will enjoy the hard surface at this round even if it’s a new challenge for the Swiss who did not attend the MXGP of Turkey in 2018.

While Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass and Arminas Jasikonis are also showing good form at the moment, so don’t be surprised if they battle up front this coming weekend. Jonass, who had his second MXGP Podium in Sweden, enjoyed the Afyon track a lot last year while he was still fighting for the MX2 title, finishing second overall in MX2.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, who was back in the Championship in Sweden, admitted how he loved the Afyon track and he showed with an impressive win in 2018. The Dutch rider might not enter the MXGP of Turkey to increase the points’ gap this year but he is still far from done fighting to give his best and win the penultimate GP of the season.

MXGP - World Championship Top Ten: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 709 points; 2. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 511 p.; 3. Gautier Paulin (FRA, YAM), 468 p.; 4. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), 446 p.; 5. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado scored his second consecutive MX2 championship at the last round in Sweden, but like Gajser, he is still motivated to add to his GP tally. The other Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Tom Vialle is coming off his first ever Grand Prix win in Sweden, and no doubt will want to stop his Spanish teammate the chance to get the win in Turkey. Prado attempted the Afyon track in 2018 finishing 6th while for Vialle this is a new challenge.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen comes to Turkey after having not his best GP in Sweden and he is certainly looking to finish on the podium after his third position last year.

Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts is currently third in the Championship 7 points ahead of Vialle and will use the penultimate and final rounds of the Championship to ensure the bronze medal while his teammate Ben Watson is forced to miss the remainder of the season due to his broken wrist.

Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen has been consistent the whole season and he won his first race of the season at the last GP in Sweden which was enough to ensure another second overall. Vlaanderen crashed hard last year in Afyon but managed to regroup and finish 10th. You can bet he will line up in Turkey with the best expectations.

F&H Racing Kawasaki’s Adam Sterry is also looking to continue his good form as a potential selection for the British MXoN team, which will be announced in this coming week and he wants his name on the team for the Assen event.

At the MXGP of Turkey Team Maddii racing riders Alberto Forato and Mattia Guadagnini will enter as wild cards. Mattia Guadagnini is the current EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing as well as the 125cc Junior Motocross World Champion while Alberto Forato finished third in the EMX250 Championship which concluded in Sweden.

Yamaha Motor Europe N.V. is pleased to confirm that Hutten Metaal Yamaha will operate as the Official Yamaha EMX250 team for the next three years through 2023.

The team based in Beerzerveld, The Netherlands, have already established themselves inside the MXGP and EMX250 paddocks as a Yamaha Supported team this year and are delighted to build on their excellent relationship with Yamaha Motor Europe.

Heading into 2020, Hutten Metaal Yamaha will focus solely on the European EMX250 Championship as the Official EMX250 team with riders Thibault Benistant, Raivo Dankers and Gianluca Facchetti. Equipped with Yamaha's cutting edge GYTR kitted YZ250F machines, all three riders are capable of challenging a place on the top step of the EMX250 podium.

The Yamaha Racing Pyramid starts with a base at the national championships with the bLU cRUand the YZ bLU cRUFIM Europe Cups and is followed by the European Championship's EMX125 and EMX250 Class team. The Hutten Metaal Yamaha EMX250 team will occupy second step on the Yamaha Racing Pyramid as a team that hopes to cultivate and prepare talented young riders for their professional careers in MXGP and MX2.

Between the three riders that will make up the Hutten Metaal Yamaha EMX250 team in 2020, there are two Junior Motocross World Champions and an EMX125 Champion. Raivo Dankers was the Junior 85cc World Champion back in 2015, Gianluca Facchetti was the Junior 125cc World Champion in 2017, while Thibault Benistant has put the Yamaha Racing Pyramid to good use and was the first Official Yamaharider to claim the coveted EMX125 crown onboard a GYTR kitted YZ125 back in 2018.

With three talented riders, Hutten Metaal Yamaha EMX250 looks forward to challenging the EMX250 crown in 2020. Yamaha Motor Europe would also like to thank the SDM Corse Yamaha team for their efforts over the past few years. The SDM Corse Yamaha team will remain inside the Yamaha Family for the 2020 season, receiving support for an EMX250 rider and Ruben Fernandez who will contest the 2020 MX2 World Championship.

Thorsten Lentink, Yamaha Motor Europe Racing Coordinator: We are very delighted to announce this new 3-year cooperation with the Hutten Metaal Team. The team started in 2017 and they caught our attention with their professional way of working. The workshop in Beerzerveld gives our talented riders everything they need to have in order to make the next step in their racing careers. Placing these three talented riders here together with these professional people is our strategy to fight for the top places on the podium in the EMX250 Championship. By signing this team, we strengthen our step-up structure, where we hope to create future MX2 and MXGP World Champions, and of course we would like to thank the SDM Corse Yamaha EMX250 team for their efforts over the last few years. It's nice to see them remain within the Yamaha Family for 2020, where they will also take on a new challenge by supporting Ruben Fernandez in the MX2 World Championship.

Wim Hutten, Hutten Metaal Yamaha EMX250 Team Owner: Two years ago, I founded Hutten Metaal Racing. Together with my team, led by Herjan Brakke and Henk Zanting, we work every day with passion and pleasure to train our riders and get better. After a good conversation with Thorsten Lentink and Alexandre Kowalski at our work-shop in Beerzerveld about the vision of Yamaha and our approach, I am very proud that Yamaha Motor Europe have put their confidence in us for the next three years. Next season we will start in the European Championship EMX250 class. We enjoy the challenge of training talented youngsters and we are able to provide our riders top material with the support of Yamaha. But also, as a team we can use the knowledge and experience that the Yamaha family offers to grow. Next season, our goal is to become European Champion. In addition, we hope to be able to deliver young talents to Yamaha's MX2 Teams.

Monaco (Principality of Monaco) 3 September 2019 - Youthstream is very pleased to announce that Latvia will continue to be part of the FIM Motocross World Championship calendar until 2023.

After the success of the 2019 MXGP of Latvia, the local Organizer and the Latvian Federation have recently extended their multi-year agreement with Youthstream to ensure the MXGP of Latvia will have a place on the FIM Motocross World Championship Calendar until the 2023 included. The renewed agreement shows not only the outstanding cooperation among Youthstream, the local organizers, the Latvian Motorcycle Federation and the Latvian Government, but it also comes as part of a rising interest in Latvia for Motocross. Every year there are more young motocross talents arising and more fans are following our thrilling sport.

Besides, local heroes such as former MX2 World champion Pauls Jonass, who has finished already twice on the MXGP podium in his rookie season and 2019 rising star Edvards Bidzans, who was crowned EMX85 Champion last July 2019, are playing an important role to attract new fans and important media such as Channel Sports Baltic and Play Sport+ that are broadcasting the MXGP series LIVE this season.

The FIM Motocross World Championship made his debut in Latvia in 2009 and Kegums has been in the calendar every year including a successful Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations held in 2014. With such an experience in organizing MXGP and MXoN events, this new agreement represents a culmination of partnership among all the parties.

Youthstream CEO David Luongo: “Youthstream is very proud to annonce the extending of the contract regarding the organization of the MXGP of Latvia in Kegums until 2023. The MXGP World Championship receives every year more demands from all around the world to host a Grand Prix. Kegums’s track has been on the calendar for many years, and it is very well appreciated by the MXGP paddock. We developed a great relationship with the Latvian Motorcycle Federation and Motocross is strongly supported by the national authorities. Finally, I want to thank Kristers Sergis, the organizer, with all his team for the quality of organization and the great relationship we have.”

LAMSF President Mārtiņš Lazdovskis: “Nowdays the Motocross World Championship is expanding very widely thanks to Youthstream and it is a great honour for a small country like Latvia to stay in calendar for other 3 years. The natural track of Kegums every year attracts more and more fans from Baltic countries and rest of Europe. Helding this event is also very essential for development of our sport in Baltics as we have our motocross stars to follow.”

Also, an immense gratitude goes to the fans of our sport, making it a pleasure to welcome the elite of motocross in Kegums for the following 4 years.”

Ivo Monticelli remains with Standing Construct KTM through 2020

Ivo Monticelli and Standing Construct KTM are delighted to have reached an agreement that will see the talented Italian remain with the team where he will contest the 2020 FIM Motocross World Championship onboard a KTM450SX-F. The contract extension comes during his most successful premier class outing where he has put in some highly impressive performances including a milestone top-five finish at his home Grand Prix in Trentino, Italy.

After finishing 23rd in his first full MXGP term in 2018, Monticelli joined the Standing Construct KTM team at the start of 2019 and has astonishingly charged up the leader board. He is currently battling for top 10 in the MXGP World Championship Classification despite being out two rounds with injuries.

Monticelli will continue to focus on the final two rounds of the 2019 MXGP series before shifting his target to the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Assen, The Netherlands, where he has been proudly selected to represent his nation, Italy, at the most prestigious event of the year.

Ivo Monticelli
: "I am very happy to continue with Standing Construct KTM. They believed in me, they gave me a chance and allowed me to make big steps this season. The team is very professional, they give me the best possible material and they are very competent people that feel like a family, which is important for me to perform. This winter I will stay in Belgium again so that I can prepare for the 2020 season in the heart of motocross where together with the team we hope to make another big step."

Tim Mathys: "
When we signed Ivo in 2018 there were a lot of people that had questions with this signing.
I think this year he showed his potential with his 5th place overall at the GP of Trentino and his several top 10 finishes. I am convinced that if he works hard in the winter again like he did last year and with the experiences he had this season, Ivo will be able to be regularly inside the top 5 in 2020."
