Official Representatives and the MXGP Paddock were then treated to a cultural experience including traditional dance and live music for the whole event before a typical Indonesian dinner was offered to the MXGP guests. Following the dinner a typical TANGAI delighted the participants. The Tangai dance is a special show reserved for very special events in Indonesia where dancers wear golden dresses and give special presents to the officials including a taste of the Indonesian delicacy made with bitter ginger.

The great atmosphere at today’s welcome event showed the expectation for what is bound to be an amazing MXGP of Indonesia.

MXGP set for Indonesian Rounds

PALEMBANG (Indonesia) 03 July 2019 – MXGP heads to the beautiful region of Sumatra in Indonesia for the MXGP of Indonesia this upcoming weekend, as the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship takes yet another step around the World.

Round 11th and 12th of the FIM Motocross World Championship will be held in 2 different Indonesian islands, the first stop has Palembang as host city alongside the popular OPI Mall. Palembang, is home to over 1.7 million people and is one of the oldest metropolitan cities in all of Indonesia attracting thousands of fans to attend.

A brand-new track has been created in Palembang with 25,000 cubic metres of soil imported. The clay circuit provides a very unique and challenging experience for riders and teams alike who are looking for the best set-up for the weekend. Asia always brings something different, with its welcoming people and warm atmosphere that make the MXGP of Indonesia one of the most exciting stops of the MXGP calendar.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser looks unstoppable at the moment, winning five GPs in a row and extending his series points lead to 83 points. The two-time World champion will head into Indonesia with his goal remaining the same, racing smooth and increasing his championship lead, until now that strategy has worked well. The Slovenian used to perform very well in the overseas races and he scored 4th and 2nd last year at the Indonesian rounds.

Red Bull KTM Factory rider Antonio Cairoli will not make it to Indonesia after his crash in Latvia three weeks ago where he fell in the second race and dislocated his right shoulder. Initial scans were positive, but the joint continues to be painful and KTM just confirmed is not yet in a condition to return to the MXGP gate.

The battle for third, fourth and fifth places in the MXGP points is an exciting one, with just one point separating three Yamaha riders. Looking to make a stand in Indonesia will be the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team riders Romain Febvre and Jeremy Seewer. Seewer is third in the championship with 289 points and he is keen on lining up on Sunday to stand on the MXGP Podium after his Indonesian win in MX2 class in 2017 in Pangkal Pinang.

Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus and Gautier Paulin both stood on the podium in Germany and with no doubt they’ll be looking to continue their championship chase. They hold down fourth and fifth place in the series points with 288 points and they are both willing to strengthen their positions.

2018 MXGP of Indonesia MXGP Podium:

  2. Antonio Cairoli

In MX2 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado has complete control of the action, with nine GPs wins from nine starts. The Spanish rider will be a heavy favourite in Indonesia, but don’t be surprised if some riders try to put some pressure on him. Having just made the decision to move up to MXGP in 2020 if he wins this year’s MX2 championship, the pressure will start to build as Prado gets closer to his aim to be a double MX2 champion. Prado won the MXGP of Asia in Semarang last year while he only reached the third spot of the podium in Pangkal Pinang.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen might have a GP win to his name in 2019, but that was when Prado didn’t race at the British round of the series at Matterley Basin and he is still keen on beating the Spaniard straight up. Olsen has never reached a podium position during the Indonesian rounds and surely he’ll line up to get this milestone career.

Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts is the only rider who managed to beat Prado in 2019 and you can be sure the Belgian youngster will use all his technical skills to do so around the tight and tricky track in Palembang, while his teammate Ben Watson will return this weekend after his injury during the MXGP of Germany’s practice and will also go into Indonesia with a positive vibe and confidence to improve on his position in the MX2 standings.

For Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle is the first Indonesian trip and he is traveling very confident after his third podium of the season taken in Germany.

Team HRC’s Calvin Vlaanderen is looking forward for this weekend, not only because it sets his comeback after he missed the latest GPs, but with the will to replicate his 2018 results when he won his first GP in MX2 class at the MXGP of Indonesia in Pangkal Pinang.

Antonio Cairoli Injury update

Red Bull KTM will rely on their strong MX2 contingent for rounds eleven and twelve of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship as both Tony Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings recover from their injuries.

For the second Grand Prix in a row the world champions will miss representation in the MXGP premier class as both Tony Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings are unfit to travel east for the Grand Prix of Indonesia this weekend at Palembang and the Grand Prix of Asia next week at Semarang.

MXGP World #1 Herlings is recovering from surgery on his lower right leg and is still not in a position to start riding his KTM 450S X-F. Cairoli tried some laps on his #222 machine yesterday (Tuesday) but the pain and discomfort in his right shoulder confirmed that the nine-times world champion is not yet in a condition to return to the MXGP gate.

Red Bull KTM are flying to Asia this weekend with Jorge Prado unbeaten for GP wins in MX2 this year while rookie Tom Vialle has appeared on the podium three times with his works KTM 250 SX-F.

Robert Jonas, VP of Offroad: “This was not the update we wanted to make but sadly Tony has not recovered enough from his dislocated shoulder to race again in MXGP at the moment and we knew Jeffrey would be needing more time after his bad luck in Latvia. Obviously it is a difficult situation for us and we are constantly assessing the recoveries of Tony and Jeffrey. Thankfully we still have excellent riders in two busy rounds of MXGP in Indonesia and we hope they stay safe and continue to enjoy a successful MX2 season so far.”

TOMMY SEARLE JOINS KRT

Tommy Searle will join the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team for the remainder of the FIM MXGP Motocross World Championship in the wake of injuries to both factory riders.

Being some members of Kawasaki teams injured lately and in a common effort to give the brand its best chances during the second part of the season, BOS GP has agreed to let Tommy Searle move from their team to the Factory rig for the upcoming GPs, starting with the Czech Republic at the end of July. Currently leader of the British championship, Tommy will race the remainder of the series on the same BOS Kawasaki he has been racing since the beginning of the season in the UK.

Tommy Searle: “I’m obviously very happy to have this opportunity to ride for the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team and I want to thank everyone involved for their support. I will work hard with them in the coming weeks to be ready and prepared for the Czech GP, and will also do my best in the British series to claimed this title for Kawasaki and BOS who gave me this opportunity this season.”

Steve Guttridge (Kawasaki Europe Racing Manager): "We started the season with six super-competitive riders on Kawasaki machinery in the MXGP class but unfortunately after Germany we have only one still able to participate. It's a tough sport! The BOS team changed to Kawasaki machinery only this season and have been working very hard to deliver results at the races. Tommy has been able to provide good feedback regards developing their race bike and particularly on the BOS suspension, which is the main goal for the team to compete at the highest level. Proof that he is comfortable on the bike is his current championship lead in the British series. However with the requirement from KHI that our factory team continue to provide feedback from the MXGP races to help develop the KX450 production bike of the future, and with both Clement and Julien now missing through injury, we concluded that Tommy should move to KRT for the remainder of this season. But not immediately, as we feel he needs to be allowed the chance to first get used to the factory bike's characteristics before lining up at the GP again. So the target is for KRT and Tommy to be partnered up from the Czech MXGP. I would like to sincerely thank Olivier Bossard and Jean Jacques Luisetti for their cooperation in this area and wish the BOS team the very best with their next team riders coming into the team structure soon"

François Lemariey (Monster Energy KRT Team manager): “It’s great to see that all the parties involved made this possible, as we need to line up our Factory bike behind the gate as soon as possible again after the injuries to Clément and Julien. Julien underwent successful surgery last Monday to his arm; he is now recovering as well as Clément but we know that both will need time before getting back to racing. Tommy did most of his GP career with Kawasaki and we are pleased to welcome him in the team; several testing sessions are already planned so we can prepare together in good shape at the MXGP of Czech Republic. It was impossible to fly to Indonesia as the crates had to be delivered earlier his week, and we want Tommy to test the bike thoroughly before racing the GPs with us. ”

Olivier Bossard (BOS Owner): “When I saw the crash of Julien Lieber last weekend in Germany I immediately understood that Tommy would join the Factory team who need a top rider to race on the bike. It’s a tough decision for BOS GP as Evgeny is also injured, but we are close to reaching a deal with another rider who had good performances last year in the World Championship. Tommy got some strong results in the MXGP with us and we are very pleased to continue our partnership with him in the British series; he’s leading this important championship for BOS and Kawasaki and we’ll provide him all the necessary support until the end of the series.”

FOX Holeshot Films – MXGP of Germany

MXGP is happy to keep running the FOX Holeshot competition trough the 19 rounds of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship season together with MXGP Partner FOX.

The way it works is that 1 point is awarded per MXGP or MX2 championship race. The first rider who cross the white line painted on the ground at the exit of the first corner will be given a point. At the end of the season, the 2 riders – one per category - with the most FOX Holeshot points will win a mega prize.

At the MXGP of Germany, which was taking place on June the 23rd in Teutschenthal GP winners Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado took the FOX Holeshot in both races in MXGP and MX2 resepctively.

Watch the FOX Holeshots Films HERE below.
