Both MXGP of Latvia Local Organizer Kristers Sergis and LAMSF President Mārtiņš Lazdovski took the microphone later on to thank Youthstream and the FIM to trust Latvia as host of one of the most popular stops of the FIM Motocross World Championship. They both mentioned Latvia has a great history in Motocross and now is home of many young talents who might be seen in MX2 or MXGP in the future.

Before passing the microphone to the riders present at the Opening Press Conference the MXGP of Latvia Local Organizer Kristers Sergis wished to remember the previous organizer of the MXGP of Latvia Salvis Freimanis and wished all riders an excellent racing this weekend especially to local hero and former MX2 World Champion Pauls Jonass, who this year is making his debut in MXGP.

Clement Desalle underwent successful surgery

The Russian round of the FIM Motocross World Championship has been a success for Kawasaki during the past two seasons with overall GP victories for Clément Desalle and the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team in the premier MXGP class. Whilst battling again for a podium result last weekend the Belgian had a pretty big crash in the first race and was back on Monday in his homeland to have surgery with Doctor Claes. He underwent successful surgery to his broken left tibia-fibula but he’s also suffering from a right ankle sprain and is now entering a long recovery programme.

The team will travel this weekend to Latvia with Julien Lieber, who feels more and more comfortable on the bike and is improving his results each weekend; seventh in Portugal, Julien scores a sixth overall in France and again last weekend in Russia, despite a bad gate pick.

François Lemariey (team manager): “We were disappointed last weekend when Clément crashed, but hopefully the surgery went Ok and Clément has now start a long recovery program. We can’t say how long he will be out, but the entire team is of course behind him and wish him a good recovery. Now we stay focus alongside Julien, who show in the past GPs’ big improvements and is coming closer to podium results; we are sure that if he can qualify better that will help him on Sunday, and we’re happy to see that the testing sessions we did with him in the past weeks help him to get better results.”

Gajser & Prado take red plates to Latvia

KEGUMS (Latvia) 12 June 2019 – MXGP will return to the beautiful circuit of Kegums this coming weekend for the MXGP of Latvia and the 9th round of the 2019 FIM Motocross World Championship is really starting to heat up. The Latvian circuit sits nicely in a forest area, 50 kilometres from the city of Riga and it is one of the favourites of the MXGP paddock. Sandy based, with good technical sections, Kegums is the perfect place for the MXGP and MX2 championships to continue the 2019 journey. Last weekend in Russia we saw the dominant performance of Team HRC’s Tim Gajser who managed to grab the MXGP Red Plate 13 points ahead of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado continued his title chase in fashion.

The Latvian round will also host the FIM Europe Motocross Championships of EMX250 and the EMX2T presented by FMF Racing. Last weekend in Russia it was Dutchman F&H Kawasaki rider Roan Van De Moosdijk who took victory, while Stephen Rubini of the Honda Redmoto Assomotor team took the red plate and the lead in the series points. In the EMX2T Presented by FMF Racing Todd Kellett took the round win for the first time and Verde Substance KTM’s Brad Anderson took the red plate out of Russia.

Prior the PATRON MXGP of Russia the MXGP class was dominated by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. However, Team HRC’s Tim Gajser, who went1-1 for third GP in a row, heads now to Latvia with the red plate and a handy points lead over Cairoli, but the Sicilian heads to Kegums, a track where he has won 4 times and has finished second in 4 occasions, determined to keep his momentum. Cairoli finished 2nd last year in Latvia while Gajser ended 5th.

The podium in Russia saw two Yamaha riders in second and third position, Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus and Jeremy Seewer from Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team. The pair of Swiss made history as for the first time two Swiss riders were standing on the podium in the MXGP class. Seewer is now 4th in the MXGP Championship while Tonus, after finishing on the podium at the last three GPs, is now running 7th just 2 points behind Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle, who is obliged to miss the MXGP of Latvia due to injury. Updates on Desalle’s conditions will be given shortly.

A lot of interest was around the comeback of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, who finished fourth overall in Russia and goes into Latvia as a real contender for a GP victory, or at least a podium finish. Jeffrey Herlings won his first ever MXGP overall in Kegums in 2017 and topped the MXGP of Latvia in 2018, too.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass, who obtained two solid second positions in Latvia the previous two years in MX2, is willing to show some good speed this weekend as he will be racing in front of his home crowd for the first time in the MXGP.

Last year’s podium finisher Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin is another rider to watch, as he has never missed the Top 10 in the previous 8 editions of the Latvian GP.  The French rider is sitting now 3rd in the championship standings.

2018 MXGP of Latvia MXGP Podium:

  1. Jeffrey Herlings
  2. Antonio Cairoli
  3. Gautier Paulin

2019 MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 351 points; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 338 p.; 3. Gautier Paulin (FRA, YAM), 231 p.; 4. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, YAM), 220 p.; 5. In the MX2 class it is Red Bull KTM Factory rider Jorge Prado who has shown amazing speed going 1-1 in almost all the races and extending his MX2 championship points lead event after event. Prado raced in Latvia in 2017 and 2018 but he has never reached the MX2 podium. The Spanish will line up for a career first GP win in Kegums.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory rider Thomas Kjer Olsen finished second overall last weekend and looks to be unbeatable on the Kegums track after having won in 2017 and 2018. On the other hand, Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2 team’s Jago Geerts, who had his first MX2 podium in Latvia last year, once again found himself on the podium in Russia and he is getting stronger and stronger as the season rolls on. Both Olsen and Geerts beat Prado in Latvia last year and are heading towards the sandy track of Kegums full of confidence.

Other riders who are looking forward to racing in Kegums this weekend are F&H Kawasaki’s Henry Jacobi, Honda 114 Motorsports team’s Mitchell Evans and Red Bull KTM Factory team’s Tom Vialle who will give their best to impress everybody and finish on the podium. However, everybody will have to watch closely sand specialists Davy Pootjes from DIGA Procross Husqvarna team or Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha rider Ben Watson as they will not leave things easy for the rest of the MX2 contenders.

Winners in Russia

When the MXGP and MX2 championship riders packed their bags and started returning home from the PATRON of Russia, one thing was very clear, Tim Gajser of the HRC Factory team, and Jorge Prado of the Red Bull KTM Factory team were in total control at the moment.

For Gajser his last three Grand Prix’s have handed him 1-1-1-1-1-1 results, and not only he has been able to dominate the fastest motocross riders in the World, but he also knocked off the 40 point deficit that Antonio Cairoli had in the MXGP points standings, and now leads the Italian by 13 points going into Latvia this weekend.

“I’m feeling really good about this weekend,” Gajser said. “It wasn’t easy out there, as both races were tough because Arnaud (Tonus) was really fast and he was always behind me pushing hard. The first race I held him off all race, and then in the second race it was the same again but with 10 minutes to go he made a mistake and that gave me the gap I needed to control the race and take the victory. The track wasn’t so bumpy, but it was still tough. Overall, I’m happy, and a huge thanks to everyone at Honda, as the CRF450RW is amazing and let’s hope we can continue this run of form. Three races ago I was 40 points behind in the championship and now I have the red plate so I’m really happy about these past few weeks have gone and although it’s still early in the season and there is plenty of races ahead of us, it’s still a great feeling and I can’t wait to see the red plate on my bike in Latvia.”

As for Prado, the Spanish teenager, while beaten in a race in France by Jago Geerts, has won every single GP he has ridden this year, and usually with 1-1 results, just as was the case in Russia last weekend.

“It was a very hard weekend,” Prado said. “In the first race I had a good jump out of the gate but collided with a few other riders in the first corner and lost a lot of positions. I had to work my way up to the front and it took all moto! With two laps to go I made the pass for first place: I was really happy afterwards, even if it did mean I had to use a lot of energy. I knew that the FOX Holeshot would be important and concentrated so much for the second race. It made my life much easier. I’m happy to win again. Latvia is a track I like. My first year there I almost made a podium and last year I won the Qualifying race and the second race. I’m looking forward to it and hope to make my gap in the championship a little bigger.”

Now onto the Kegums circuit in Latvia, and another crack at the top step of the podium for both riders. While the red plates are safe for the time being, a long list of riders in both MXGP and MX2 will be hunting down the two front runners, and nothing is assured until the event has been run.
