Van de Moosdijk and Kellett Rally in Russia for First Overall Wins

ORLYONOK (Russia) 9 June 2019 - The Russian round of the FIM Europe Championship classes EMX250 and EMX2T presented by FMF Racing has been decided! Rallying to take their respective overall wins in Russia were F&H Racing Kawasaki’s Roan Van de Moosdijk and Todd Kellett.

Serving as the 4th round of both the EMX250 and EMX2T presented by FMF Racing Championship seasons Orlyonok hosted the future stars of the FIM Motocross World Championship. Warm weather and sunshine tested the physical conditioning of the riders while the challenging surface of the circuit tested their skill.

Saturday’s EMX250 Race 1 began with KTM Junior Racing’s Rene Hofer in the lead with the number 98 MJC Yamaha of Thibault Benistant just behind him. SDMCORSE-Yamaha’s Rick Elzinga was third but the F&H Racing Kawasaki of Roan van de Moosdijk came from fourth to pass both Elzinga and Benistant by lap 2.

Meanwhile Team Maddii Racing Husqvarna’s Alberto Forato crashed trying to come through the pack. Honda Redmoto Assomotor’s Stephen Rubini was one rider to successfully move forward from 7th to 3rd while Van de Moosdijk took the lead from Hofer.

Van de Moosdijk held the lead to the finish winning the race ahead of Hofer and Rubini while Benistant took 4th and the red plate holder Forato took 15th.

Today’s race was led by Rubini from the first lap with Van de Moosdijk giving chase. Elzinga had another good start in 4th behind Hutten Metal Yamaha Racing’s Raivo Dankers but both wer passed by Hofer as the race progressed.

Forato again struggled in the begging and had to try and fight forward with today being much more succefull as he came from 9th up to 4th after taking the spot from Dankers only a few laps before the finish.

Rubini rode to the race win and subsequently took the red plate from Forato while Van de Moosdijk held 2nd to take the overall round of Russia victory. With Rubini second overall and Van de Moosdijk the victor Hofer took the final spot on the podium for his first time in EMX250.

EMX2T presented by FMF Racing saw good jumps off the gate from Team Ecomaxx Fuels’ Mike Kras and A1M Husqvarna’s Andero Lusbo but the pair were beat out by Todd Kellett at the exit of the first turn.

After Kellett took the lead Lusbo and Verde Substance KTM’s Brad Anderson passed Kras. Kellett then refused to let his lead go and held the premier position for each of the 17 laps. Vaclav Kovar had an issue and was unable to finish the race but all eyes were on Kellett as he took the first race win of his career ahead of Lusbo, Anderson, Kras, and Pier Filippo Bertuzzo.

Today the defending EMX300 presented FMF Racing champion and #1 KTM of Anderson led every single lap while Kellett was left to try and find a way past in 2nd. Behind Kellett was again Lusbo, Kras, and Bertuzzo who Kovar managed to take 5th from.

Kellett was right on the back wheel of Anderson and couldn’t find a way by but in the end it didn’t matter because even though Anderson took the race win it was Kellett’s 1-2 scores that beat out his 3-1 for the overall.

The overall win was the first for Kellett and Anderson’s 2nd overall gives him the championship leader's red plate from Kras who finished 4th overall behind Lusbo. The 2 strokes of EMX2T presented by FMF Racing will now head to Latvia for their 5th round in only one week’s time where Kellett will try to hold on to his newly colored front plate.

Gajser and Prado Continue Winning Streak in Russia

ORLYONOK (Russia) 9 June 2019 – The 2019 PATRON MXGP of Russia is in the books and was full of action. The warm Orlyonok weather along with a tricky track demanded the most out of even the world’s best this weekend. Team HRC’s Tim Gajser and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado solidified their MXGP and MX2 prowess as both now hold the Championship leader’s red plates after another weekend at the top step of the podium.

The weekend’s warm weather and blue skies was matched by the blue water of the Black Sea and warm welcome of Russia’s motocross fans. The picturesque location of the venue and the beautiful Russian community of spectators combined with the unexpected results made for an unforgettable weekend of racing.

Following yesterday’s qualifying results Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre lined up to the gate in pole position and when the gate dropped for today’s race 1 the Frenchman scored his second Fox Holeshot of the year. Team HRC’s Tim Gajser shot past the #461 almost immediately after they crossed the chalk and was into the lead as the opening lap kicked off.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle got into second with a pass on Febvre along with Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus. The #84 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine of Jeffrey Herlings was in 5th  while Red Bull KTM's Antonio Cairoli was way back outside the top 15.

BOS Factory’s Evgeny Bobryshev lost control of his Kawasaki on the main downhill section on the opening lap and crashed hard ending not only the race but his home GP. Tonus gained a spot as Desalle fell in a corner while Tonus’ Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP teammate, Gautier Paulin, crashed out of the top ten damaging his front causing him to fall again before making his way into Pit Lane and eventually the paddock.

Herlings then found himself in 4th after the fall of Desalle with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Jeremy Seewer applying pressure. Seewer first passed Jonass but then Desalle surged past both Jonass and Seewer to take over 5th.

Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki’s Alessandro Lupino had a big crash and was unable to continue while fellow Italian and his friend Antonio Cairoli was stuck in 15th for 12 laps before finally making a pass on Team VHR KTM’s Jordi Tixier. Desalle was ejected from his bike at the end of pitlane straight with only four laps to go and was unable to rejoin the racing. Seewer took over the 4th spot while Gajser took the race win ahead of Tonus, Febvre, and Herlings. Cairoli gained 2 more spots in the closing laps to finish 12th.

The second and final race of the MXGP weekend started with a season first Fox Holeshot for Standing Construct KTM’s Glenn Coldenhoff with Gajser and Tixier just behind. Tonus was quick to move past Tixier along with Seewer. Seewer’s teammate Febvre fell in the early portion of the race from 7th costing him 6 positions with his former 7th place spot going to Cairoli.

Jonass passed Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Julien Lieber to get into the top 5 behind his former MX2 rival Seewer. On lap 7 Jonass lost his top 5 spot to Lieber as Cairoli also went by into 6th before making it past Lieber the next lap, at the same Gajser finally made his way around Coldenhoff for the lead.

Coldenhoff lost the 2nd spot to Tonus immediately before losing a handful of other spots in the following laps to Seewer, Cairoli, Lieber, Jonass, Herlings, Paulin, and Febvre. Tonus then closed in right to the back wheel of Gajser and made an attempt to take the lead but clipped a trackside haybale and fell instead.

The fall of Tonus didn’t lose him any positions, only time to Gajser that he could not recover. At the finish Gajser took his 3rd MXGP Overall in 3 rounds via double race wins, the MXGP Championship leader's red plate, and the first ever Russian Overall GP victory for Honda. Tonus took second overall with his 2-2 finishes and Seewer scored his career first MXGP podium overall, best MXGP race finish, and put not only the second Yamaha on the podium but also joined his Swiss compatriot Tonus to make history as the first time two Swiss riders have stood on the podium in the premier category of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

Tim Gajser, “I am feeling really good but both races were really tough because Arnaud was really fast and pushing. Overall, I am happy winning again and thanks to everybody at Honda, the bike is just amazing. Three races ago I was more than 40 points behind Tony and now I have the red plate.”

Arnaud Tonus, “It wasn’t easy to fight for the lead, but I was super happy that I had quite starts so I could fight from the beginning and come quite close to Tim. I went for it and really wanted to pass him but made a small a mistake, it happens. I am happy I went for it anyway and could recover to finish second which is great, I am super thankful and super happy because 3 podiums in a row is amazing.”

Jeremy Seewer, ” It is amazing to make it on the MXGP podium, it just feels a lot harder than even any of MX2 wins. It is a lot of work and a lot of fast guys so it feels really good. It is amazing to have two Swiss guys on the podium it hasn’t happened in the history of motocross in Switzerland and to do it on two Yamahas is even better.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado took pole position into today’s races thanks to his win in Qualifying yesterday but spun off the gate for an uncharacteristic start outside of the top 10. Meanwhile it was BIKE IT DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei taking his first Fox Holeshot of the year.

Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle where in second and third but Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen was on a mission and made it past Vialle quickly.

Not much later Olsen made it into second passing Geerts on the downhill leading up to the finish. Prado has made his way up to 5th by this point and took 4th from his teammate Vialle on the next lap before battling with Geerts over 3rd.

While the pair battled, Olsen took the lead from Sanayei who then was caught by Prado after he made it by Geerts. The next lap Geerts also move forward past Sanayei who continued to lose position to Vialle and Honda 114 Motorsports’ Mitch Evans. With two laps to go Prado took the lead from Olsen as they entered the turn at the bottom of the downhill. Geerts tried to reel in Olsen for a last lap pass but wasn’t quite close enough.

The second MX2 race started with the 10 Fox Holeshot of the season for Prado with Darian Sanayei again getting a good start in 2nd. Olsen was in third just ahead of Marchetti Racing Team KTM’s Iker Larranaga and Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori’s Michele Cervellin.

Geerts didn’t have quite as good of a start as in race 1 but made his way into 5th by lap 2 with a pass on the American Mitchell Harrison from BUD Racing Kawasaki. The other American Sanayei was then passed by Olsen for 2nd as the Dane tried to keep Prado in sight.

Cervellin lost 4th to Geerts but gained it back as both him and Geerts shuffled Sanayei further back. After Vialle joined the top 5 by passing Sanayei on the 10th lap no further changes occurred at the head of the field. Prado passed the checkered flag for his 6th consecutive overall win and 7th of the 8 races so far this season. Olsen took both 2ndin the race and overall while Geerts took third and rounded out the podium.

Jorge Prado, “I felt pretty good this weekend, the track was hard but I felt good getting the Saturday Qualifying Race win and today I was in the back of the pack so I had to make my way up to the front, but I had good speed and fought all the way to the end to get the win. I am happy and looking forward to the next round.”

Thomas Kjer Olsen, “I felt good all weekend. Yesterday in the Qualifying I felt really good then we made some changes on the bike to make it feel really comfortable on the hard pack. Overall, I am happy I got to lead some laps, felt great on the bike, and everything so I am looking forward to Latvia for sure.”

Jago Geerts, “It was a really solid weekend for me, I was really happy with the starts, I had three good starts this weekend which is positive for the rest of the season. Next weekend is Latvia, one of my favorite tracks but the goal is the same, to be on the podium, so we’ll see.”

Febvre and Prado Run Pole in Russia

ORLYONOK (Russia) 8 June 2019 – The first day at the 2019 PATRON MXGP of Russia was a wild one full of action in Orlyonok. The seaside venue and warm weather combined MXGP and MX2 Qualifying action with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado victorious.

The Russian round also included racing from European Championship classes of EMX250 and EMX2T presented by FMF Racing. Today saw the first of the two races in each category and while tomorrow will host the overall deciding results championship points were both gained, and lost, this afternoon.

EMX250 Race 1 was led by the #711 of KTM Junior Racing’s Rene Hofer but the F&H Racing Kawasaki of Roan van de Moosdijk came for around fourth off the start to take the lead and subsequent win. Team Maddii Racing Husqvarna’s Alberto Forato crashed while trying to come through the pack to eventually finish 14th dropping his points lead over Honda Redmoto Assomotor’s Stephen Rubini to only 5 after the Frenchman finished in 3rd. EMX2T presented by FMF Racing on the other hand had a new winner after Todd Kellett took the lead off the start and led all the way the finish for the first win of his career.

With defending MXGP World Champion Jeffrey Herlings returning on his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine interest was high as the gate dropped for today’s qualifying. Herlings was however beat out on the start by another former champion just back from injury, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre. Herlings then fell on the first lap putting him well outside the top 20.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle, who has won this event the past 2 seasons, was in second behind Febvre. Monster Energy Wilvo Yamaha Official MXGP’s Gautier Paulin ran third while Team HRC’s Tim Gajser made it past both Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Team VHR KTM’s Jordi Tixier.

Cairoli and Standing Construct KTM’s Max Anstie also were quick to get by Tixier. By the 6th lap Herlings had made his way up to 19th while his KTM teammate, Cairoli, applied pressure to Gajser for 3rd after they both had passed Desalle. On the next lap Cairoli hit the ground hard just ahead of Desalle who also crashed while trying to miss the wayward KTM. Cairoli was slow to get up but rode back to Pit Lane and is expected to race tomorrow.

Desalle was passed by Anstie and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Jeremy Seewer as a result of the fall but remounted his Kawasaki to hold on to 6th. Gajser took over 2nd from Paulin in the meantime but Febvre scored the win, his 2ndqualifying win of the rounds he has competed in this year.

Herlings managed to get up to 16thwhile Russian MXGP superstar Evgeny Bobryshev took 11thon his BOS Factory bike in front of the home crowd. Cairoli’s fellow Italian, Gebben Van Venrooy Kawasaki Racing’s Alessandro Lupino, also crashed out of today’s qualifying but his status for tomorrow is unknown.

Romain Febvre, “I felt good today, this week I was really sick again, but today I felt much better since the morning. I had a good day, second in time practice, and a really good start which on this kind of track to get a holeshot is really helpful and after I could chose my lines and just ride my lines without risk since I had no one in front of me.”

Clement Desalle, “It was good to win the last two years here. It is a nice race, the first year was in mud last year I won in dry conditions, so it is good. Today a made some mistakes and also Antonio Cairoli crashed big right in front of me and I had to brake hard then I had a big crash as well, I had bent handlebars but I could finish 6th which is a good spot for the start tomorrow.”

Evgeny Bobryshev, “For me it is important to race here, and I am happy that I could make it, especially after Argentina and taking two months rest missing so many races. I am quite happy I finished 11th. It is really nice to be in Russia and I haven’t been here for over 6 months so coming here with my own language, Russian food, and many friends I am really enjoying life and riding.”

Jeffrey Herlings, “I almost took the holeshot but Romain went a bit wide so I was back in 4th place and then going down the hill my front end washed away. It is good to be back racing though and it has been three weeks I have been on the bike. I think it is normal, you can’t expect after such a long time off the bike and then only a short time back on the bike to compete with these guys who are the best in the world. I think it is important to just be smart and take these next three races as training then towards the end of the season be back on the podium and back winning.”

MX2 Qualifying started with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle leading but the young Frenchman made a mistake on the uphill losing momentum and allowing BIKE IT DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei to take over the lead.

The American’s time at the front was short lived however as he tipped over in a rut giving Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Jago Geerts the top spot. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado was in second but before the next lap was complete, he took the spot from Geerts.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen was in third but also moved past Geerts. Sanayei was then caught by a handful of riders first losing 4thto Vialle before Yamaha SM Action MC Migliori’s Michele Cervellin and Honda 114 Motorsports’ Mitch Evans dropped him further back to 7th.

Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha Official MX2’s Ben Watson would have been the next rider to challenge Sanayei but instead lost control of his Yamaha on the takeoff of the finish jump crashing hard and later rejoining the race in 28th.

Sanayei did however lose one more position to Honda Redmoto Assomotor’s Mathys Boisrame 6 laps later. Evans pushed his way past Cervellin and Vialle to take 4th in the late stages of the race while Prado took the win ahead of Olsen and Geerts, Vialle eventually finished 6th, Sanayei 8th, and Watson 25th.

Jorge Prado, “Today was a good day and I felt good already in the Free Practice. I had a good start which was important, a top 5, and then I made my way up to first with a good rhythm so I am looking forward to tomorrow.”
