Cairoli and Jonass Claim the MXGP of Czech Republic

(LOKET) Czech Republic, 23 July 2017 - The 13th round of the 2017 FIM Motocross World Championship hosted in Loket, Czech Republic concluded today. The MXGP of Czech Republic was a challenging one for all the riders but it was the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing riders of Antonio Cairoli and Pauls Jonass who each took their 6th overall win this season and kept the championship lead.

MXGP race 1 roared down Loket start straight to the Fox Holeshot line and it was Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle who was there first. Desalle was followed by HRC’s Tim Gajser who quickly took the pole position away from the Belgian.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin followed Desalle but led Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Wilvo Yamaha MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus. In the 19 lap race 1 the top five held their positions for 17 of them. During the 17th lap Cairoli found a way around Paulin for third.

Meanwhile Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings was quickly progressing forward from a 9th place start. On the final lap Cairoli caught Desalle and Herlings caught Tonus. While Herlings made it by Tonus, Cairoli couldn’t get past Desalle. Gajser took the race win, his first since the second race of Trentino. Gajser in the press conference said, “I’m really happy because the weekend was really positive after many weeks struggling and to be back now on the podium is great.”

After being narrowly beat out on the start of race 1 Tim Gajser responded with the FOX Holeshot in race 2. He then led the first 5 laps before Cairoli cut to the inside and took the spot away. Only one lap later Desalle also found his way past the reigning champ.

With Cairoli leading and Desalle second, Herlings surprised Gajser taking the 3rd position with a quick inside pass. Gajser finished race 2 in 4th to take the 3rd overall.

Gautier Paulin took 5th after he fended off a charge by Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Romain Febvre.

Cairoli took the race win, his 83rd career overall, and later in the press conference said, “I’m really happy to leave this GP with a victory. I want to dedicate this victory to the rider who passed away yesterday, we are all together with his family and hope that they will be ok.”

Desalle consistent 2-2 took second overall to which he said, “It’s a strong a day, it a good result and I’m happy that it was positive today. I had a strong ride, I was focused on myself and I enjoy what I did”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass came back to Loket track with a vengeance. Jonass who had a season ended crash here last year started the day in the top 5 off the start of race 1.

Ahead of Jonass on the first lap was HSF Motorsport Team's Brian Bogers, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing's Thomas Covington, and his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Teammate Jorge Prado.

Covington, who struggled to pass Prado during Saturday's qualifying race, made quick work of the #61 jumping into the lead on 2nd lap. Covington grew his lead to a considerable margin over the field and cruised to the race win.

Meanwhile Jonass first passed Bogers, who dropped to 7th by the finish, and then passed his teammate Prado. The two KTM’s stayed 2nd and 3rd to the checkered flag.

Behind them was another Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing bike belonging to Thomas Kjer Olsen. Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer took the fifth spot after a frustrating start.

In race 2 another Rockstar Energy Husqvarna took the FOX Holeshot but this time it was that of Conrad Mewse. Mewse however would drop to 12th by the finish while his teammate Covington had a bad start and finished 10th. Covington in the press conference said: “I felt really good yesterday in the qualifying race and then again in the first moto this morning. I didn’t think I was going to get on the podium and got lucky after getting back to 10th in race 2."

Prado led the first lap but was again passed by his teammate Jonass who opened a gap. While Prado was second Jeremy Seewer was right on his back wheel. Seewer tried to pass Prado numerous times but was shut out by the young Spaniard.

Seewer eventually came under pressure from Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team’s Benoit Paturel. The pressure created even more urgency for Seewer who eventually clipped the back of Prado and went down. The crash swallowed up Paturel as well and the two HSF Motorsport’s rider of Calvin Vlaanderen and Brian Bogers inherited the positions.

Both Seewer and Paturel rebounded first passing the HSF bikes back and then Prado as well. Seewer in the press conference said: “It was frustrating to not be able to pass Jorge, he is such a smart rider so it is very difficult to pass him. I’m looking forward to Lommel…I feel good there, I do a lot of testing there”.

LRT KTM’s Julien Lieber had an up and down weekend with 18th in race 1 and a 5th in race 2.

Pauls Jonass was the one who claimed the overall with an unbeatable 2-1 result. Jonass in the press conference said: “I felt really good all weekend, starting with qualifying yesterday I really enjoyed it. In the end I just controlled the race and got the win.”

Duncan Takes the WMX Red Plate in Loket

(LOKET) Czech Republic, 23 July 2017 - The Women’s Motocross World Class was the first on the tricky Loket circuit this weekend for the 4th round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship.

The first race of the weekend was Saturday where we saw Shana Van der Vlist lead the early laps but she dropped positions starting on lap 4 to the heavy hitters and title contenders of MX Fonta Racing’s Kiara Fontanesi, Altherm JCR Yamaha’s Courtney Duncan, and Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot.

Courtney Duncan had an incredible race coming 8th position on the first lap to a make well timed pass on Kiara Fontanesi only two corners before the finish and win.

Following the top two was Nancy Van De Ven who briefly ran second after she passed a struggling Livia Lancelot. At the finish Larissa Papenmeier rounded out the top 5 just ahead of KTM Silver Action’s Amandine Verstappen.

Sunday’s race 2 started with a holeshot from Verstappen who was chased by race 1 winner, Duncan. Duncan stayed on the back of Verstappen for the first half of the race before losing traction in a corner and going down, and while she didn’t lose the position she did drop 16 seconds off of the lead.

Behind Duncan and Verstappen, it was Fontanessi charging forward from a 6th on the first lap to the back wheel of Livia Lancelot in 3rd. The two prior champions eventually came together after Fontanesi’s inside line faded to the outside and into Lancelot.

With both Lancelot and Fontanesi going down Nancy Van de Ven and Nine Six Four’s Nicky Van Wordragen capitalized by taking over 3rd and 4th. The #114 and #8 both managed to keep their bikes running and each remounted to finish 5th and 6th with Lancelot ahead of Fontanesi. Up front Amandine Verstappen lead every lap and took her first ever race win good enough for 2nd overall.

Courtney Duncan finished second in race 2 but more importantly grabbed the overall and takes the championship lead with only two rounds remaining this season. The final overall podium spot went to Nancy Van De Ven.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli started qualifying strong, nearly grabbing the holeshot but was just beat out by Team HRC’s Tim Gajser. With Gajser in the lead Cairoli latched on but was surprisingly passes by last years overall winner, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl.

While Cairoli and Nagl battled Gajser pulled a slight gap over the pair. Behind the top three was the other Red Bull KTM Factory Racing riders, Glenn Coldenhoff and Jeffrey Herlings. Coldenhoff started the in 5th but moved into fourth after Suzuki World MXGP’s Arminas Jasikonis fell out of the position. Jasikonis would remount but only make it back to 18th.

Herlings didn’t have quite the start as Coldenhoff but made up for it with a late charge. Herlings managed to pass for three positions in the last three laps  first on Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team’s Romain Febvre, then Rockstar Energy Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin, and finally Coldenhoff for 4th.

Back at the front Cairoli found a way around Nagl on lap 7 and quickly closed on Gajser. Gajser eventually left the door open and Cairoli took the lead on lap 9 which he would grow to over 5 second by the finish 5 laps later. Cairoli in the press conference said : “ Today was better than years before there were more berms and you could make some different lines. It’s nice to have a good start and it’s also really important on this track. We are starting to the look at the championship so it is really important to get good points and we know it is not always possible to win, but will try to take as many points as possible tomorrow."

Team Suzuki World MXGP’s Kevin Strijbos is back in action after suffering some injuries recently. The injuries however didn’t show as he had a strong start and finished 10th. Strijbos in the press conference said: “It was not easy but I got a good start in the qualifying race, I was in 6th and ended in the top ten. Jonass in the qualifying press conference said, : “Last year I had a big crash here, but overall I enjoy this track, I like riding here. Feeling was good today, I just could ride my own lines and was able to try some new lines for passing tomorrow.

While Jonass led, his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Teammate Jorge Prado Garcia was right in tow and fending off the relentless Rockstar Energy Husqvar Factory Racing rider, Thomas Covington.

The American, Covington wasn’t alone either at first it was his fellow countryman, Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei.

In his first race back since Ottobiano, Sanayei had a strong performance even after being passed by Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team’s Benoit Paturel.

Across the finish and past the checkered it was Prado who withstood the charges of Covington to finish 2nd followed by the American, Paturel, and Sanayei.

LRT KTM’s Julien Lieber was initially battling in the top three but made a mistake and went off track and he finished 15th.

MXoN_Excitement

While the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations is still 12 weeks away, a lot of teams and riders are starting to get excited for the event. While defending champions Team France are the big favourites, teams like Team USA, Team Great Britain and Team Australian are a good shot at a top three result.

Another interesting aspect is the chance that Team Puerto Rico look like they will have a very strong line-up, with Grand Prix based American, Thomas Covington leading the team into action.

“As far as Team America goes, I haven’t thought about it. They will probably go with Zach Osborne anyway, and he will be good at Matterley Basin as he has ridden it a lot. I will actually ride for Puerto Rico on the 450, that is what we have been talking about. It’s a little bit lame that they don’t think about a GP rider (for Team USA), but I would be stoked to ride an event like that and it’s a track I like and I am looking forward to it.”

Australian Dean Ferris, who has been in great form of late, and put two strong results together in the MXoN last year in Italy, is looking forward to try and help the Aussies get on the podium.

“I think we (Team Australia) will be strong. We have needed a good MX2 guy for a while now. I rode in 2013, but it seems it is hard for Australia to get three good riders together. Hopefully Hunter (Lawrence) and I are healthy in October and Kirk Gibbs is rock solid, he has a lot of speed here. There are a few others, Todd Waters and Brett Metcalfe, but its awesome Hunter is doing well.

As for Hunter Lawrence, the young Aussie, who finished on the podium at the Grand Prix in Germany a month or so ago, is currently injured, but will be back in time for the MXoN. He, like Ferris is excited to get the chance to race for his country.

“It would be cool going to the Nations. It is still a long way away, but if I can go there, it would be awesome and Matterley Basin looks like an awesome track. I hope I can ride there this year.”

A rider who hopes to be in the line-up for the home team is Shaun Simpson. Having ridden for his country on a handful of occasions the Yamaha rider can’t wait to put in some good performances when he is back from injury and get selected for Team Great Britain.

“I would love to ride at Matterley. I didn’t ride there in 2006 because I wasn’t good enough, and looking at my career, this might be the last chance to race at home at this event. I would be really disappointed if I wasn’t involved. If we could pull something out of the hat and grab a podium, that would be nice. That is why I want to make a push and I hope Dean, Tommy, Max and I are all riding great around that time and it’s a hard decision for Mark Chamberlain (team manager).”
