Career Firsts for Herlings and Olsen in Latvia

(KEGUMS) Latvia, 7 May 2017 - The second day of the MXGP of Latvia roared to life with the start of the points paying races today. The MXGP of Latvia in Kegums will be forever etched into the minds of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen as each recorded their first career overall wins in their respective classes. Meanwhile Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and local hero Pauls Jonass will go to the MXGP of Germany in 2 weeks time holding the Red Plate.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings had a weekend of first, first in Saturday’s Qualifying Race, first in Race 1, and first in Race 2, which when combined gave him his first career overall victory in the premier MXGP class. Herlings literally could not have had better results, from the fastest in each practice to the last checkered flag he dominated. Herlings in the press conference said, “This is the cherry on the cake, I’m very happy being up here! I felt good all weekend and I’m always fast on this track, we’ve won here a couple times now.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli will leave Latvia with new addition to his KTM, the red plate. Cairoli’s consistent ability to charge toward the front, after not the best of starts, is proving crucial in the competitive MXGP championship. While Cairoli may not have had the weekend he was looking for second overall and the points lead is nothing but impressive. Cairoli in the press conference said, “I’m ok, I’m not satisfied with my result…but it is good for the championship. I would fight for the win every weekend but I am happy with the weekend as a whole.”

Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev returned to the podium this weekend with a 3-4 for 3rd overall in front of several Russian fans who made the trip. Bobryshev has been looking like he has podium speed lately but he has faded in the later stages of racing. He explained in the press conference, “In Valkenswaard I had some health problems and the week before Kegums I was recovering. Overall the result is good, I’m just looking forward to getting my health and physical fitness back.” Bobryshev now looks to the future and continuing to improve during the week off.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle had a spectacular Race 1 where he grabbed the FOX Holeshot and he lost out only to the unstoppable #84. Desalle was also passed by Bobryshev in race one but the Belgian showed some fight and returned the favor only one lap later. In race 2 he finished 5th for 4th overall.

Last GP’s winner, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin put together a top 5 finish after placing 7th in both races. Paulin did fall in race 2 but will most likely be disappointed with the result of the weekend.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser came into the weekend with the points lead and battled from the back of the pack in Race 1 going from 36th up to 14th. In race 2 Gajser was running second before a mistake took him out of the race. The 14th and DNF has taken Gajser out the points lead he has worked so hard to achieve. Gajser was evaluated by medical staff onsite, he is reportedly unscathed and in good spirits.

Suzuki World MXGP’s Arminas Jasikonis has been impressive lately and is noticeably improving. The Lithuanian rider took his first Fox Holeshot in MXGP Race 2 today then he led the first 4 laps. Jasikonis finished a strong 3rd in Race 2 and finished 10th overall.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen was on a mission this weekend. Olsen started the GP by winning the Qualifying Race and Race 1 in an impressive display. Race 2 was more of a challenge as Olsen started in 8th place and with Pauls Jonass out front he knew he needed 2nd to claim the overall a feat he accomplished. Olsen in the press conference said, “I worked my way up through the pack and I’m pretty happy with my riding, I just stayed consistent all moto. It was so tough out there so I was trying to make no mistakes and ride smooth. I’m so happy with how things turned out. Last year I won here in the European Championship, it is pretty crazy that I win the GP this year.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass grew his points lead once again this weekend. In race one Jonass looked as if he was going to finish 2nd but on the last lap he was passed by the #91 Suzuki. In race 2 the determination of Jonass to win in front of his home fans was evident as he charged throughout. Jonass went 3-1 for second overall and in the press conference said, “My second race was really good…I just wanted to stay on 2 wheels and make no mistakes this weekend and I accomplished that.”

HSF Logistics Motorsport’s Calvin Vlaanderen nabbed the final spot on the overall podium with his 5-4 finishes. Vlaanderen made a pass on during the last lap which was for the podium. Vlaanderen in the press conference stated, “I can’t really explain the feeling, it is so nice. Actually since I crossed the finish line I can’t remember the podium it has all just been a blur for me. It’s been an unbelievable feeling getting my first podium.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado Garcia just missed the podium as he was the rider which Vlaanderen passed on the final lap of Race 2. Prado took the FOX Holeshot in both MX2 races and he lead each briefly before falling back. Prado scored the same points as Vlaanderen but his 4-5 put him 4th overall.

The final spot among the top 5 overall belongs to Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Conrad Mewse. Mewse has really started to turn his season around after struggling to score any points in the first three rounds of the championship to now a top five overall with a 3rd in Race 2.

Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer had a gritty performance in Race 1 after falling while trying to catch Jonass, he somehow regrouped and charged up to the #41’s back wheel again. Seewer was going inside to outside trying to find a way past Jonass and finally did on the last lap with only 2 corners remaining. However in Race 2 Seewer slid out in the first turn and then crashed again not long after causing his bike to become unrideable.

LRT’s Julien Lieber is another rider who crashed in race 2 while he was running second. Even though Lieber’s crash was quite spectacular he managed to collect himself quickly and still finish in 8th for a 7th overall.

Herlings and Olsen Strike First in Latvia

(KEGUMS) Latvia, 6 May 2017 - The MXGP of Latvia kicked off today in Kegums for the 7th round of the 2017 FIM Motocross World Championship. The beautiful Kegums circuit is set among pine trees and soft sandy soil and it is where the #84 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen had the first victory of the weekend.

In addition the EMX250 Championship had the first race of the 3rd round in which Josiah Natzke led every lap and cruised to a comfortable race win. Finishing behind Natzke was the Italian Morgan Lesiardo and F&H Racing Team’s Ruben Fernandez.

To finish out the day we had the first race of the second round of the EMX125 Championship Presented by FMF Racing. With a massive list of entries two qualifying groups were narrowed to one full gate and BUD Racing Monster Energy’s Brian Strubhart Moreau was the fastest after he went by Gianluca Facchetti for the win on lap 6. Facchetti eventually finished 3rd behind Kevin Horgmo.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings scored his first MXGP Qualifying Race win today after lining up on the inside of the start getting himself into second on the first lap. Herlings was over 3 seconds off the leader Max Nagl for the majority of the race but came on strong during the final laps eventually making the pass for the win with one lap remaining. In the press conference Herlings stated: “It’s been a while since I’ve won, it feels very good to be up here again… It will help me out tomorrow because at this track it is key to get a good start. I’m just going for race wins now”

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Maximilian Nagl had his best showing of the season today. The German rider grabbed the holeshot and led every lap until he was past on the last by Herlings. Nagl had some of the fastest laps and sector time of the day and he will certainly be a podium competitor in tomorrow’s racing.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek knows how to ride in the sand and for the second week in a row he is proving it qualifying 3rd. 5th on lap one Van Horebeek showed some impressive riding on his way past his competitors; he is a threat for the win this weekend without a doubt.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser started 3rd and he was under pressure the entire race by one rider or another as the top 7 were all quite close. Gajser kept his composure and lost only one position to Van Horebeek, ending qualifying 4th.

The other Team HRC rider Evgeny Bobryshev stayed right in line with his teammate starting one spot back of Gajser and finishing 5th.

Team Suzuki World MXGP’s Arminas Jasikonis came into Latvia positive after scoring his best overall result at the prior GP in Valkenswaard. Jasikonis has kept the good performances coming with a 6th in the Qualifying Race. Jasikonis in the qualifying press conference said: “I like the Kegums track, it’s nice and it feels almost like a home GP even if its not my in home country it's nice to race here. I’m not going to put pressure on myself, I’m just trying to get more and more experience.”

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli started qualifying on the back end of the top ten. Cairoli did however battle his way past Paulin and Jasikonis. On the next to last corner Cairoli tried to muscle his way by the Russian Evgeny Bobryshev but instead he fell, losing a position back to Jasikonis, he ended qualifying in 7th place.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin, the overall victor of the last GP, had a decent start and was 7th on lap one, however the Frenchman would this time drop 2 positions. After battling the first half of the race, the 9th place will leave Paulin looking for more.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jordi Tixier returned from injury today though still in some pain he managed to qualify in 15th place. Tixier was invited in the qualifying press conference today and he sais: “So far I’m just taking it easy. We just have to take things race by race and go from there. I’m really happy to be back racing.”

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 24:13.369; 2. Maximilian Nagl (GER, Husqvarna), +0:02.519; 3. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:12.188; 4. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:14.811; 5. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, Honda), +0:18.903; 6. Arminas Jasikonis (LTU, Suzuki), +0:23.419; 7. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:24.546; 8. Clement Desalle (BEL, Kawasaki), +0:31.002; 9. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Husqvarna), +0:32.197; 10. Shaun Simpson (GBR, Yamaha), +0:33.297

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen was the best of the MX2 class today, getting the best timing in practice and winning the qualifying race for the second time this season. Olsen showed patience as he started in third and progressed his way forward. Olsen in the press conference stated: “I’m really happy with this race, I took my time in the beginning and I felt really good on my bike. I felt like I was riding good, I was riding like myself and had no small mistakes this time. We are getting better and better in the qualifying races, now we just need to do the same in the races tomorrow.”

Thomas Covington positioned his Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing machine right behind his teammate for second in an impressive effort coming from 6th on the first lap. Covington seems to be feeling good here in Latvia and as we saw in Leon when Covington is feeling good he is contender for the overall.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass is the local hero in Latvia as it is his home GP. Jonass was looking for a top five in qualifying and accomplished 3rd setting himself up well to win at home. Jonass in the press conference said: “I feels good to be back home, I haven’t been home in a long time so I spent some time with family this week. It’s nice to see the many Latvian flags in the crowd… I really enjoy the fans cheering me on!"

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado Garcia grabbed the holeshot and then lead the first 7 laps. Prado battled for the lead and had a near fall and impressive save before dropping to 4th position. Prado will be focused on minimizing mistakes and riding smooth when the gate drops tomorrow.

HSF Logistics Motorsport’s Calvin Vlaanderen finished a rather uneventful 5th place by starting 7th and then capitalizing on the mistakes of others.

Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer was off to a promising start to the weekend as he battled for the qualifying race lead against Prado. Seewer did eventually find his way by Prado but only a few seconds later he went down and dropped a handful of positions. Another error hindered him once again and in the end he finished 8th.

LRT KTM’s Julien Lieber will try to focus on anything but his 24th place finish in qualifying which was a result of a fall.

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, Husqvarna), 24:21.659; 2. Thomas Covington (USA, Husqvarna), +0:04.022; 3. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), +0:05.997; 4. MXGP of Latvia secures future

(KEGUMS) Latvia, 6 May 2017 - Youthstream is proud to announce an agreement for the MXGP of Latvia to continue its place on the FIM Motocross World Championship Calendar for the next 3 years. The renewed agreement is a culmination of work among Youthstream, the local organizers, the Latvian Motorcycle Federation and the Latvian government.

Today marked the signing of the agreement by Youthstream’s Vice President, David Luongo, MXGP of Latvia local Organizer Kristers Sergis and the new President of the Latvian Motorcycle Federation Martins Lazdovskis, which assures that the MXGP of Latvia will take place in 2018, 2019, and 2020.

Youthstream Vice President and Head of operations David Luongo said: “It is a great pleasure to continue to bring the MXGP World Championship to Latvia for the next 3 years. Every year MXGP is becoming more and more popular and the requests to organize a Grand Prix from all around the world are exploding. On the other hand it is very important for Youthstream to strengthen our relationships with historically best Organizers, and the Grand Prix of Latvia, here in Kegums, is one of them. The venue, the track, the facilities and the quality of the organization are simply great. The collaboration with the Organizer Kristers Sergis and the President of the Latvian Motorcycle Federation Martins Lazdovkis are also very good. On last Thursday we were invited for a meeting by the Prime Minister of the country, Mr. Maris Kucinskis which showed the high level of interest of Latvia to continue to host such an event. When the National Government, the National Federation and the Organizer are so happy and positive to receive the opportunity to organize an MXGP World Championship event, the MXGP World Championship feels proud of the work accomplished!”

MXGP of Latvia local Organizer Kristers Sergis stated: “We are really happy that Youthstream is renewing the contract with us. For me the new challenge started 3 years ago and we do our best to improve the facilities every year. I also hope people enjoy staying in Latvia, for a small country it is very important to host such a great event like the FIM Motocross World Championship. I also wish to say thank you to Martins, the new President of the Latvian Federation for his support on this event”

President of the Latvian Motorcycle Federation Martins Lazdovskis concludes: "First I wish to thank Youthstream for trusting that such event could happen here in Kegums and Krister Sergis for the efforts that he put into the improvement of the facilities. This shows the great cooperation between Youthstream and the local Organizers. Many countries now wish to be part of the Motocross World Championship calendar and we are very proud to be included for the next 3 years."
