Cairoli in Germany

For Antonio Cairoli, who leads the MXGP points standings, this weekend’s Grand Prix of Germany marks a special stop in his season. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider has been winning at this circuit for more than ten years, and his record is unequalled by this year’s current competitors.

The Italian legend won for the first time a decade ago in 2007, and he would win again two years later in his debut season in the 450class winning in 2009. He finished second to Russian charger Evgeny Bobryshev in 2011, then he won again in 2012.

While the 2012 GP in Germany didn’t stop at Teutschenthal due to the Monster Energy MXoN being run there. Cairoli capped off his brilliant performances at the hard pack in Germany, having won for the fourth time in Teutschenthal in 2016. Thus entering this year’s event as possibly the favourite for victory.

“I like Teutschenthal a lot,” Cairoli said. “I like it because it’s rough, and technical, and not wide open like some other tracks. We will see, I look forward to every weekend, because my condition and speed are good, but I am frustrated about my starts, when I get a bad start I don’t like that at all. I get holeshots or outside the top 10, sometimes outside the top 20 and I will work on that before Germany.”

As for his last round in Latvia, it wasn’t the perfect performance, but he still made the podium, and once again showed lightning speed.

“I was not completely satisfied about how my weekend went, from a Championship point of view I’m happy, because my closest rival did worse than me and I've got the red plate back. What I’m not happy with, were my starts, that made my races way more difficult than they should have been. In race one I was outside of the top 15 from the start but luckily clawed my way back to 5th, which is not bad but I want to be fighting for the victory every race. In the second race I was feeling ok, I almost got the FOX Holeshot but I went off of the track and down to sixth. Fortunately, my speed was good and I made some decent passes back up to third place, just before Gajser had a big crash in front of me. I was a bit shocked because it was a big one but I just kept riding till the end, finishing second and luckily they told me that Tim didn't suffered any consequences.”

Now onto one of his favourite tracks, a track that needs experience, and good concentration. As we have seen in the past, this is where Cairoli has it over his rivals. If you want to bet against the Italian, then it might be best not to put too much of a wager down. In good form, and with the red plate, you can be sure Cairoli will want to leave Germany with an even handier points lead, and another victory at the beautiful German facility.

Time for Teutschenthal and the MXGP of Germany

TEUTSCHENTHAL (Germany), 17 May 2017 - It is time for the 8th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship on the hard surface of Teutschenthal for the 2017 MXGP of Germany.

After taking a weekend off the MXGP paddock is ready to race again. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen come to Germany with their first career wins in their respective classes.

In addition to MXGP and MX2 the paddock will include some new faces coming from the European championships of EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing and Honda EMX150. The two championships will race for the first time this season here in Germany.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli came in second at the MXGP of Latvia and now he holds the red plate and points lead. Cairoli won in Germany last year in addition to the other three times prior in his career. After a strong performance in Latvia and his past results here Cairoli is favorite for this weekends win.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings seems to have found his rhythm on the 450 after finishing 2nd in Valkenswaard and winning for the first time in his MXGP career in Latvia. Herlings won the MX2 class here last year and looking to create a winning streak this weekend.

Though Team HRC’s Tim Gajser is battered and bruised from a vicious wreck in Latvia, he is expected to race. Gajser knows how it feels to win in Germany, he did so in 2015 while in the MX2 class. Gajser lost his red plate after Latvia but the Slovenian is definitely not going to give up without a fight. Expect the Gajser show some true grit in Germany.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin didn’t have the weekend he expected in Latvia, especially after winning the prior GP. Paulin has never won in Germany but he was close in 2015 with a 2nd overall.

Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev reached the podium for the second time this season at the last GP and he has been recovering from health issues. The long time Honda rider finished on the MXGP of Germany podium in 2016 and he won here in 2011. With improving health and improving results this weekend may see him added to the list of first time winners in 2017.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle had a strong race in Latvia with 2-5 results. Desalle historically does well at Teutschenthal winning the last time he raced the circuit in 2014 and reaching the podium the 4 years prior.

Team Suzuki World MXGP’s Arminas Jasikonis has had his best results of his career the past 2 races. However after the sand of the last 2 this hard circuit in Germany will be a different challenge for the Lithuanian.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl will race at his home GP. Nagl has raced in the World Championship at the MXGP of Germany 6 time and 5 of which he finished in the top 5.

Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer struggles continued in Latvia, after a hard fight in race 1 Seewer crashed and he was unable to finish race 2. The Swiss rider is used to hard pack circuits and finished 3rd overall here last year. Seewer has seen Jonass slipping away with points lead and is due for a change of luck in Germany.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen won the first overall of his career in Latvia and is continuing to improve and gain experience week after week. Olsen is now 3rd in the  MX2 points chase and is a podium favorite this weekend.

Paturel finished 5th here last year and is now fifth in the championship, If the french rider can get off of the grid well this weekend he is a threat for the podium.

Morgan Lesiardo joins Kawasaki

Since the beginning of the season the team has been hit by unfortunate injuries; three weeks ago in Valkenswaard, Adam Sterry damaged knee ligaments and will now miss the remainder of the season. The British rider underwent successful surgery, but he will not be able to ride his Kawasaki KX250F-SR before the end of the FIM Motocross World Championship so the team was looking for a rider to jump on the bike for the remainder of 2017.

Young Italian Morgan Lesiardo, only eighteen years old in mid-April and leader of the European MX2 series with three podiums during the first three rounds, has been selected to join the team and will compete in the MX2 Grand Prix of Germany as there is no round of the EMX that he normally competes in that weekend.

Further good news is the return of Stephen Rubini in Germany; the young Frenchman recovered from an ankle injury sustained a few days before the European GP in Valkenswaard. After successful tests this week he will line up alongside Petar Petrov and Morgan Lesiardo under the Monster Energy Kawasaki awning in Teutschenthal.

Morgan Lesiardo: “I'm so glad about this opportunity with the Monster Energy Kawasaki MX2 team! I showed good speed in the first three rounds of EMX with the Italian privateer team Maggiora Park and I want to thank them so much because it's also to their credit that I'm here now. I will continue to race the European championship, try to gain experience and also achieve good results in MX2 GP class, so I want to thank so much all the people that work in this fantastic team, Kawasaki, Monster Energy plus all the sponsors of the team and all my sponsors that have believed in me! It was my dream when I was a kid and now it's reality; I want to take this opportunity with both hands and show how much I can do across the remainder of the season!”

Jean Jacques Luisetti: “So far we have been pretty unlucky with injuries, and as Adam will not be back racing this season we needed to sign another rider to respect our responsibilities to Kawasaki and our sponsors. First of all, I want to wish Adam a speedy recovery. Then there were several options but, as soon as the Maggiora Park team let Morgan Lesiardo become available, we expressed an instant interest in him. He is young, has been really strong in the European MX2 series, and we’ll start working with him next weekend in the World MX2. I really want to thank his former team Maggiora Park; they understood the situation and the chance offered to Morgan. For us it will be a pleasure to have the red plate on our Monster Kawasaki for the next round of the European MX2 in France, and of course we continue to work for the future of the team.”

Adam Sterry: “I’m really gutted about this injury as at the moment it seems there is a black cloud hanging over my head. I felt we had just sorted a few things out then a small dab of my leg and this happens. Everyone worked really hard and I didn’t manage to show what we were capable of yet. I had surgery last week on my ACL and it went very well! This week I start my physio to get my knee back to 100%.”

Honda 150 European Championship to use Mitas tyres in 2017

For the 2017 season, the Honda 150 European Championship will use motocross tyres provided by Mitas, the leading European motorcycle tyre manufacturer.

The 11-14 year old riders will compete on identical Honda CRF150R machinery with Mitas tyres, which the 30 selected riders had the chance to familiarise themselves with at the lovemytraining pre-season training camp in Boves, Italy (28-30 April).

The Honda 150 European Championship, as the youth support series to MXGP, will be present at five grand prix rounds in 2017 starting this weekend in Germany, then Portugal, Belgium, Sweden and The Netherlands.

Gordon Crockard, Honda Motor Europe Off-Road Manager: “It gives me great pleasure to introduce Mitas to the Honda 150 European Championship as our tyre partner for 2017. The collaboration of these two leading companies working together is exciting and carries a high level of potential. The young riders of the series will benefit on track with the traction performance of the Mitas tyres and I believe the commitment from Mitas, to move forward together with the series, will accelerate progression in tyre technology for youth sized motorcycles.”

Luka Mežan, Mitas Moto Racing & Sponsorship Manager: “I believe that the partnership with the Honda 150 European Championship shows the enthusiasm and determined commitment Mitas has to off-road racing and that it creates a solid basis for further development of motocross.

“Cooperation with such a respected and highly renowned partner as Honda is a high recognition for Mitas and proves the top quality of our tyres. We are really keen to support all these young riders on their way to higher MX classes and we are proud that we play an important role in this story. As a specialist in off-road tyres, Mitas is keen to help nurture the motocross talent of tomorrow.”

Mitas is one of Europe’s leading motorcycle tyre manufacturers, and its sports roots go back to 1947 when it first started producing motorcycle tyres for speedway. Mitas motorcycle tyres and tubes are manufactured in production facilities in the Czech Republic and Slovenia. The range includes on-road, trail, off-road, scooter, moped and kart tyres.
