Standouts Pre-Season

With the opening round of the 2016 FIM Motocross World Championship set to take place at the end of the month, the pre-season performances of some of its competitors is making the expectations go to another level.

Of course the two favorites for the MXGP championship are defending champion Romain Febvre of the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory team, and multiple world champion Antonio Cairoli of the Red Bull KTM Factory team.

Both riders have suffered minor injuries in the last two weeks, leaving their preparation for the opener in Qatar a little underdone. Both will be fit for Qatar, there is no doubt about that at this point.

With a series as long as the MXGP series is nobody is too worried that these two champions won’t be at their best at the pointy end of the championship in September.

Febvre might have picked up a slight arm injury last weekend, but his performance a week earlier showed that the speed of 2015 is still there and his race craft is looking Cairoli like. The Frenchman must go into Qatar as the favorite, as the title belongs to him until somebody else edges him away from the biggest prize in the sport.

What has also been shown in the two weekends of pre-season, is that a handful of riders are looking sharp going into Qatar.

Clement Desalle who moved to the Monster Energy Kawasaki factory team in the winter looked brilliant last weekend at an International event in England. The Belgian won the opening moto, and finished a consistent 1-3-4 from his three races, and from all accounts looked comfortable in his new green colors.

It’s been many years that Desalle has been a serious contender for the MXGP championship, but has always come up short, sometimes due to injury, sometimes just bad luck. Is the 2016 version of the tough Belgian strong enough to end the year on top of the point’s race?

Another shining light from the pre-season races is New Zealand’s Ben Townley. Under the watchful eye of his team manager Stefan Everts, the former MX2 world champion scored a strong second place finish in a moto last weekend, and looked really well rounded. Much like Ryan Villopoto in 2015 the world will be watching on February 27 when Townley lines up for the opening GP of the season.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory rider Jeremy Van Horebeek, who had a shocker of a season in 2015, is also looking likely to return to his runner-up form of 2014. The Belgian has already scored a moto win this year and his consistency has been impressive, going 2-3-2-1 for the four moto’s he has competed in.

Of course in the MX2 ranks, Red Bull KTM Factory rider Jeffrey Herlings stands head and shoulders above his rivals. With a good winter preparation, and complete fitness, he has finished with 1-4-1-1-1, two of those results (4-1) coming in super finals against the 450 machines.

These are just a handful of riders who are showing good form, but there are a long list of others, Shaun Simpson, Evgeny Bobryshev, Max Nagl, Kevin Strijbos and Gautier Paulin have also looked fast so far this year.

Bring on the Grand Prix of Qatar, it looks like it’s going to be another classic.

MXGP welcomes Wössner

MONACO, (Principality of Monaco) 4 February 2016 – Youthstream are pleased to announce that Wössner, a leading manufacturer of forged pistons, will be an advertising partner for the 2016 FIM Motocross World Championship season. As a partner of MXGP, the brand Wössner will be visible to the public and MXGP’s extensive television audience.

The brand ‘Wössner’ has a long history in motorsport, Eckart Wössner, the company owner and CEO, was a keen motorcycle racer himself and takes pride in his countless number of wins at national level.

Business began for Mr. Wössner in the 1980’s, in Weil am Rhein, Germany, when he became an exclusive importer of pistons from America, which he distributed across the country. It wasn’t until the 1990’s before he started the in-house production of his own high-performance forged pistons which ever-since have become increasingly popular worldwide.

In 2003 Wössner increased their production area in Germany by four times its former size and continued to expand with the establishment of Wössner USA in 2005, and Wössner Italia Srl in 2011.

Alpinestars extends FIM MXGP partnership with multi-year agreement

MONACO (Principality of Monaco), 2 February, 2016 – Youthstream is announcing today a new multi-year agreement with Alpinestars, the world’s leading motorsport performance footwear, protection and apparel company.

The agreement sees Alpinestars continue as the ‘Official Protective Footwear and Apparel Partner’ of the FIM Motocross World Championship, which this year commences on February 27 with the MXGP of Qatar and will visit Thailand, Argentina, Mexico, the US and Europe.

Alpinestars has been at the very heart of motocross for over five decades, innovating and developing class-leading off-road performance products and material technologies for its professional riders and customers in one of the most demanding forms of motorsport.

The agreement, which builds on decades of cooperation with Youthstream, means Alpinestars will have visibility throughout the entire 2016 MXGP season, with premium track-side branding as well as paddock promotions and GP activations.

At the heart of its involvement in MXGP, Alpinestars’ racing program continues to focus on its core objectives of giving world-class athletes – such as MXGP champions Romain Febvre, Tim Gajser and Jeffrey Herlings – improved protection, performance and comfort, while developing and testing new technologies to ensure its customers receive the same performance innovations as those of the world’s best professional off-road riders.

Mario Marini, Youthstream’s Director of Corporate Relations, said: “The last two years of partnership between the MXGPs and Alpinestars have been like a smooth first class journey for two companies that share vision and relentless desire for improvement and growth. Literally, it took minutes to formalize our continuing partnership and we are very glad that Alpinestars is part of our program as they do not only bring along their incredible history, quality, design and reputation, they are also extremely proactive and committed in promoting our sport and supporting in every way possible the MXGPs all around the world”.

“Alpinestars has been developing technology for motocross racers for over 50 years,” said Gabriele Mazzarolo, President of Alpinestars. “We are continuously pushing the boundaries of innovation and ensuring that both top class athletes and customers enjoy the benefits of our world class products. The MXGP Championship, where so many Alpinestars riders have won titles, is an important part of our drive to prove new riding performance technologies at the highest level and the continuing partnership with Youthstream, who have contributed greatly to the development of world motocross, is a natural and mutually beneficial relationship in helping to promote enjoyment and safety for the sport”.

Flying Away

For many inside the Grand Prix paddock the trips to places like Qatar, Thailand, Argentina, Mexico and America makes the FIM Motocross World Championship just that little bit more special. The 2016 season is filled with exotic stops and amazing cultures.

Not every rider is a fan of flying, and Russian charger Evgeny Bobryshev is one that would rather drive to the races, than fly. Despite this the HRC factory rider does enjoy the far-away places.

“It is a lot of flying,” Bobryshev said. “I hate flying, but I still really like the Qatar/Thailand trip. I enjoy those two rounds and Argentina is also nice, but it’s such a long way and everyone is in the same position. The travel is tough, with the time difference, the weather is different, it makes it really tough, but we have to get used to that.”

Two times World MX2 champion Jeffrey Herlings feels the overseas races are important for the growth of the sport. He also find the whole experience at times tough, but worthwhile.

“It’s a nice calendar,” Herlings said. “It is also nice to go overseas, and to give people in those countries the chance to see us. So going to places like Thailand and Argentina is really cool, they hardly get to see riders of our level. It is tough on the body, and I do my best with that part of it.”

Suzuki factory rider Ben Townley who started his career in GP when there were not any fly away races is looking forward to getting to some of the countries he still hasn’t visited.

“I am looking forward to the culture and experience,” Townley said. “I think a lot of people in the paddock might not like the travel, but I am used to it, I come from the furthest away point on the planet to be here, so I don’t mind the travel and at the age I am I am really looking forward to soaking it up. When I was young I didn’t care about the old buildings and the food. It comes with age I guess.”

Stefan Everts the owner of the Suzuki factory set-up has travelled to maybe more countries than any of the current day riders, and obviously heading to the opening round in Qatar this year means a lot to him.

“I mean, I am very excited to go to Qatar,” Everts said. “We have already made some changes with our overseas set-up, but to do the first GP in the new colors and the new team it’s exciting. Most of the team will be there, also Sylvain, because it’s my first one and he shouldn’t miss that. I am happy we don’t have three overseas in a row, and now the schedule is a lot better. The tracks are good and very different and my personal preference is to end the season in Europe, but we end it in USA, but I am ok and we accept it.”

All in all the long flights, and different foods and changing temperatures might not be for everyone, but for those that enjoy the experience of something new, then the 2016 FIM Motocross World Championship calendar is perfect for you.
