MXGP Academy's first training camp in Malaga

Great success for MX-B certification, in the first training camp of the MXGP Academy for Motocross riders in Malaga (Spain).
Malaga was the venue of the second training camp for Motocross riders from all over Europe. In total there where riders from 8 nationalities, most between 10 and 18 years old, for a successful event.

Eight young riders took part to MX-A, fifteen riders to MX-B. The whole program was in combination with JB training school (John vd Berk) as an application in his programme in Malaga, in the South of Spain. Training track, accommodation, weather and hotel where perfect as usual and tracks were in good conditions. It was the second edition of this training camp and all participants are already looking forward to the next year, with the pilot MX-C proof.

A particular note for Switzerland, which was well represented in this training camp. Katja Zund, from Switzerland, has been the first female MX rider to succeed in the MX-B proof and she was, for sure, one of the best in the group. Michelle and Nina Zund, sisters of Katja, succeeded as well in the MX-A proof.  So the Motocross Training Camp is no longer only chosen by young male riders but from now on the female MX participants are coming up as well.

Next Summer the Motocross Academy will visit the Swiss GP, looking forward to a training session on that track.
The next training camp will be held in Tartu (Estonia), for the Northern region of Europe, next Summer. Further information will follow.

David Herbreteau to complete Honda Gariboldi's MX2 line-up

Young Frenchman David Herbreteau will race in the MX2 class of the FIM Motocross World Championship in 2016, contesting all rounds with the exception of the first four overseas races.

The 2014 French 125 Junior Champion was originally planned to compete in the EMX250 series when he joined the team in December 2015, but instead will make his Honda MX2 debut on the CRF250R at the GP of the Netherlands on 27-28 March.

Honda Gariboldi Racing has always focused on finding and developing new young talent, as best demonstrated with taking Tim Gajser to the MX2 title last season, and the commitment to Herbreteau continues this attitude.

To aid his development, the team has also contracted the services of Frenchman Bruno Losito, the former manager and trainer of Marvin Musquin, to train Herbreteau on a daily basis and at every GP of the season.

Herbreteau will race as teammate to both Gajser, who makes his MXGP debut this season, and Spaniard Jorge Zaragoza who will again contest the MX2 class aboard the CRF250RW.

Giacomo Gariboldi, Team Principal

“We’re very excited to announce that this year David will join us and compete in MX2. He’s a very promising young talent and multiple French junior champion, so for us the decision for him to race in MX2 on the CRF250R was quite an easy one – it’s where we are very strong as reigning World Champions, and it allows David to race straight away with the best guys in an environment where he will learn and develop very quickly. We’re confident that we have a very strong team this season with three young and talented guys: Tim in MXGP and David joining Jorge in MX2. Official testing will start at the end of January, and we’re ready to go and looking forward to the challenges and opportunities this new season will bring.”

David Herbreteau

“I’m really happy to join the Honda Gariboldi Team for this season and I’m so grateful to Giacomo for his trust and support. It was a nice present for Christmas to join the team, and now it’s a big opportunity to race almost a full season in MX2. For the first I have all the materials in place for full training and preparation for the season, so I will take this chance and work so hard for it. It’s also a great honour to be able to join Tim and Jorge in the same team so I’m really motivated for 2016 with Honda.”

David Herbreteau in brief:

Season Opener

When I think of the Grand Prix of Qatar I think of fresh air, warm weather and a really exciting feeling in the paddock. Not to mention racing that always brings something of the unknown. With just seven weeks to go before the MXGP series kicks off in the middle-east, the motocross media are starting to focus on this race.

There can be no doubt the excitement for the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championships continues to be massive. Last year it was the entry of American legend Ryan Villopoto into the MXGP class, and this year there are a number of reasons to get excited.

Take your pick from the new breed of MX2 riders who moved up to the MXGP class, MX2 world champion Tim Gajser, Valentin Guillod, and last year’s MX2 champion Jordi Tixier. Three very solid riders, all with a great chance of doing something special in their debut season in the big bike class.

2004 MX2 world champion Ben Townley returning to race against his former rival Antonio Cairoli will be one to watch, as will the performance of defending MXGP champion Romain Febvre. All in all he racing won’t disappoint.

What makes this round of the series so special though is more than just the racing. It’s the whole experience that really gives a special feeling for the riders, mechanics, team managers, media, and Youthstream.

A race held in the middle of a desert, at night, and in temperatures that really make for an enjoyable stop for the world championships.

Lavish hotels, spotless paddock area, the organizers of this event always give 100% to make it one of the best rounds of the season.

QMMF President Mr. Nasser Khalifa Al Attiyah has always been confident his race would be something special, and in 2016 he expects another classic.

“I am sure we make a good start to the season. I would like to congratulate Youthstream on what they have achieved with their media success of this event, and we are very proud to have the first GP again in 2016. It is amazing for us to be able to present this race to the world and we always look forward to working with Youthstream and the riders involved.”

Youthstream President Mr. Giuseppe Luongo has long been a fan of racing the FIM Motocross World Championships outside Europe, giving the sport a real world championship feel.

“This opening round of the series is very important, places like Losail, and the organizers of this event give the MXGP series a very special feel. We have managed to make motocross a worldwide sport. We have also managed to receive worldwide television coverage which is very important.”

When the riders jump from their plane at Doha airport, you can expect that the fresh air, the warm weather and the exciting circuit will give them everything they need to make this the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championship a very special event.

Standing Construct and Wilvo to join forces

Tim Mathys (Standing Construct) and Louis Vosters (Wilvo) will form the official Yamaha World Championship MX2 team to contest the 2016 FIM Motocross World Championship and other selected events. Both will manage the Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha team as equal partners.

With the line-up of Russian Aleksandr Tonkov and Belgian Julien Lieber the team has two riders with the potential to win silverware and achieve top finishes in the highly competitive MX2 class.

Amplification to the team’s workshop was facilitated by the transfer into one of the Wilvo plants in Bergeijk, in the Netherlands close to the Belgian border. An even more professional infrastructure has been created in order to expand the growing performance and status of the racing operation that owned three Grands Prix in 2015.

In 2016 Wilvo Standing Construct Yamaha will once again be responsible for the further development of the YZ250F.

Experience versus youth

The 2016 MXGP class is without question one of youth versus experience. While names like David Philippaerts, Antonio Cairoli, Shaun Simpson, Ken De Dycker, Ben Townley, Tommy Searle, Clement Desalle and Kevin Strijbos represent the experienced riders of this era, the names of Romain Febvre, Tim Gajser, Valentin Guillod and Jordi Tixier bring in the fresh blood to the big bike class.

Sure Febvre as a rookie was crowned 2015 MXGP champion, but he’s still very much a youngster in a class loaded with former world champions and GP winners. Many riders who have ridden nearly their whole lives in the Grand Prix series.

Experience counts for little though when these young rookies have little fear and a lot of motivation. Winning in the MXGP class is the pinnacle of the sport. MXoN winners come out of this class and it’s been proven time and time again the strongest most determined competitors are racing in the FIM Motocross World Championship.

2015 MX2 world champion Tim Gajser knows that nothing comes without hard work and pain. The HRC factory rider goes into the 2016 season with momentum on his side after blitzing to his first world title, but one title isn’t enough.

“It has always been my dream to win a world championship,” Tim Gajser told after his MX2 title this year. “I just didn’t want to win it in the MX2 class though, my goal was to move to the MXGP class and try and win it there. Now I have that MX2 championship I have to work even harder to be competitive in the MXGP class. I am excited for 2016.”

It isn’t hard to forget how Gajser came to win the MX2 championship. In a tough battle with Pauls Jonass, Valentin Guillod and Jordi Tixier he came out in front. Guillod and Tixier follow the Honda rider to the MXGP class next year, and they would like nothing more than putting pressure on the older brigade and make their own mark in the 450cc class.

“It won’t be easy,” Guillod said. “But you know the 250 doesn’t really match my riding style, the 450 is really smooth and my first goal is to arrive ready for Qatar and I will try and improve race by race and see where we are at the middle of the season, but the first goal is to be around top seven.”

So the big question is can the young guns of 2016 make their mark against the old guard of Cairoli, Desalle, Townley, and Strijbos? If 2015 is anything to go by, then the answer is simple. Anyone coming out of the top five in the MX2 class is capable of battling the leading MXGP riders, and that makes for a very special 2016 season.
