MXGP MAG #102 - David Luongo Editorial

Dear MXGP Friends,

Here we are, in a few days, the gates will drop for the opening Grand Prix of the 2022 MXGP season at the beautiful track of Matterley Basin in Great Britain.

The winter break has flown by very fast this year as we were finally catching up the classic time frame of the calendar and the format of the Grand Prix that we were missing for two years. This season will see the comeback of the two day format that made the essence of the MXGP for the last decades. The fans will have the pleasure to have the return of the Saturday qualification race and the European classes will race their second heat also on Sunday.

The last months gave to all of us a much better situation in regard to the covid-19 restrictions and the Grand Prix of Great Britain will allow the maximum public attendance to the race. The festivities will start on Friday with the usual Opening Press Conference to present the novelties of the championship and the top riders and their teams.

This season promises to be more open than ever. The defending champion, Jeffrey Herlings will probably miss some Grand Prix before he will be fully recovered from his injury. The motivation of the other favourites and top guns of the MXGP class will be at the highest! Tim Gajser, Jorge Prado, Romain Febvre, and the MX2 World Champion, Maxime Renaux, for his rookie season in MXGP will be full gas to gain the maximum points! In MX2, Tom Vialle, Jago Geerts, Mattia Guadagnini, De Wolf will probably be in position to lead but here again, every year bring new talents and it will be very  interesting to see Liam Everts on his rookie year. Kawasaki will start a new journey with Ice One as Husqvarna with Standing Construct, both are very professional structures.

With 20 Grand Prix taking place in 15 different countries, the season will be long and full of surprises as every year. We will welcome back countries that were missing the MXGP for two years as Argentina, Portugal, Indonesia, Sweden, Finland. They will bring back a lot of different kind of tracks, that the riders will have to master to be crowned World Champion.

The last two years we were missing the public for many events, but we put all our efforts to keep the fans close to the actions with our TV coverage and our different social networks. We continued to grow. In 2022, we will continue our investments to promote MXGP and to increase its popularity worldwide with the same energy. You will be able to follow all the actions on our OTT platform, MXGP-TV.com and our TV broadcasters grid will be unveil very soon.

Most of the ticketing pre-sales are open for the upcoming Grand Prix, as for the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations. I can tell you that the demand is huge for normal and VIP Package tickets especially for our come back to USA!

We cannot wait to finally celebrate this season that could mark the beginning of our new normality!

Finally, I would like to thank FIM, FIM Europe, all our organizers, the MXGP partners, the teams and the riders, for their collaboration.

See you in Matterley!

David Luongo, CEO of Infront Moto Racing

A new chapter for F&H Kawasaki

F&H Kawasaki enters a new chapter this season as, for the first time since its creation seven years ago, the team will contest both MX2 and MXGP classes of the FIM Motocross World Championship.

The Dutch-based team has enjoyed success in the MX2 class, claiming the European title in 2019 and GP podiums every year since they entered the World Championship in 2018. For the first time this season the team will have one rider in each of the MX2 and the MXGP series, a new development which is welcomed by everyone in the team. Norwegian Kevin Horgmo joins the team for the first time in MX2, while Australian Jed Beaton returns for his rookie year in MXGP.

“The entire family took the decision to race two classes; we feel it will bring a fresh wind and new opportunities and we are really looking forward to the challenge. We had a great off-season; Jed is back with us and we are very optimistic, together with Kawasaki, that we can give him the opportunity to race up-front on the KX450 because he is a very talented rider. We achieved MX2 podiums with him, and we are happy to give him this chance,” explained team manager Nathalie Fase, who runs the team alongside her father Harry and is enthusiastic after the short winter break.

“With riders in two classes it will be different. We will need a new approach but we have less riders, going from three to two, so we can still focus on both; maybe it will be even better than with all riders in one class,” she added.

Marc de Reuver, a former GP winner who has been coach to the F&H team riders for several seasons, is happy about the preparation with both riders: “It’s going well; it’s even been a little less hectic than in previous years because we now have one MX2 and one MXGP rider so the focus is a little different. When we came back from Turkey last year we had a team meeting, and Harry the team owner suggested the idea to have one MXGP rider and one MX2 rider in 2022. We have had several really good years in the MX2 class and achieved good results but I prefer this solution; it’s a lot less stress.” Marc has already been acquainted with both riders for several years: “I have known Kevin already for a long time; in 2016 he was racing the EMX125 while I was also involved in a team racing that series so I saw him riding. Like most of the guys who are racing at the front in the EMX classes he has the talent to get good results and just needs everything around him to be in the right place. I’m confident for him; it’s coming, as we could see in the pre-season races. I like to work with riders who deserve a chance, and he really deserves it.” Marc is also enjoying working again with Jed Beaton, the man who secured the team’s first GP podium in 2018. “Me and Jed are good friends and I like to work with him. He has a good character; he never complains, he’s a hard worker and it’s good to have him back with us. I’m really happy.”

For Harry and Nathalie Fase, who have both been highly enthusiastic about motocross for many years and who also run their own business outside the sport, a new exciting era commences this weekend when the gate drops at Matterley Basin for the first of twenty rounds of the 2022 FIM World Motocross Championship. After two tough seasons due to the pandemic GP racing returns to the two-day schedule this year and the F&H Kawasaki Racing Team will be present with all of their long-term partners. “We keep the same partners; we have a strong and solid base which we have built since day one of the team. We have so many loyal partners and we don’t like to change; If it clicks it clicks and, even with the obstacles created by Covid, everybody continued to have faith in us and everyone has been really loyal on both sides during this difficult time. Now we can’t wait for the new season to start; to meet and work again with our partners at the races,” concluded Nathalie, who was pleased to see both of her riders battling for podiums during the pre-season races.

Kevin Horgmo: “It was a short offseason this year, but we had 4 good weeks on Sardinia and 2 preseason races which was good. It’s a good group of people working together in the team, and made me comfy on the Kawasaki already after some weeks of riding. Really eager to get to the GP’s!”

Jed Beaton: “The off season went well; we headed to Sardinia which was a first for me. I really enjoyed it there was a nice little island with many tracks, its feels good to be back on the F&H Kawasaki. I think the bike suits me really well and I’m adapting to the 450 nicely, I’m looking forward to the season ahead with goals of improving every round on my results and staying healthy all year!”

MXGP Fired-Up for Season Opener in Matterley Basin This Weekend

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 16 February 2022 – The 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship is ready for the season opener this weekend in Matterley Basin for the start of another intense season of racing.

The sweeping hard-pack circuit of Matterley Basin based in Winchester, England has been the home of the British Grand Prix for over a decade and this weekend will host the fastest riders in the world for the 12th time!

Each year, Matterley Basin is one of the best venues in Europe and often voted by the riders as one of the favourites on the MXGP racing calendar. It is not only a great circuit for the best riders in the world but also great for the fans who always get to enjoy some of the best racing action with the bonus of unobstructed views.

This season sees the FIM Motocross World Championship return to normality following two tough seasons of restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which means the return of fans at the circuit as well as the normal two-day format which means the return of the qualifying races on Saturday!

Alongside the MXGP and MX2 action, we will also witness the opening rounds of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX Open Championship.

There have been many changes that have taken place in the off-season, with riders moving teams and teams changing manufacturers making the first round even more exciting as we get to see everyone line-up in their new colours!

Home hero Ben Watson of Kawasaki Factory Racing Team will look to make his debut with the new team a memorable one and doing so in front of his home fans will sure be an added boost of motivation and confidence. Watson has had some strong results in the pre-season races making him a real podium threat.

His new teammate and championship contender Romain Febvre will unfortunately not get to line-up at the first race as he continues to recover from an injury sustained at the end of last year. This will be a huge blow for Febvre who is hoping to go for the title again this season after narrowly missing out on the top spot last season to Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings.

Herlings will be another name missing on the entry list for the MXGP of Great Britain as he also recovers from a heel injury that he picked up in Spain. There is no confirmed timeline of when both Herlings and Febvre can be expected to make their return, either way the points that they will miss out on will be costly for the title hopes.

This of course leaves the door open for Team HRC’s Tim Gajser to make the most of this opportunity and pick up the maximum points possible if we are likely to see a repeat of the 2021 title showdown. Every point is very crucial, as we witnessed last year, therefore Gajser will no doubt be aiming for the win this weekend and he has a big chance to do just that. Matterley Basin is one of his favourite tracks and a place where he has pretty consistently been on the podium. He has only managed to win a GP once (2016) in Matterley Basin, not including his win at the round of EMX125 in 2012 but will no doubt push for a second this time around.

For the first time in one year we’ll see the full Team HRC line-up as Mitch Evans will finally make his return to the FIM Motocross World Championship. The Aussie missed last year’s championship due to an injury sustained in 2020 which presented him some complications and healing took longer than expected. But now back in Europe, Evans will look to put in some solid results and make up for lost time.

Other podium contenders for this weekend include Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer and Glenn Coldenhoff. Both of the riders had a strong end to the 2021 season with a win for Seewer in Trentino and a podium for Coldenhoff at the same venue. If the pair have managed to carry that momentum throughout the off-season, there is no doubt that we could see them both fighting for a spot on the box.

There’s also Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado who will help the team with their transition from KTM to GasGas. The team management will remain the same with the only change being from orange to red.

With the retirement of Antonio Cairoli in 2021, Jorge Prado will now be the only MXGP rider for Red Bull GasGas Factory Racing as the Spaniard can be expected to be fighting for race wins and podiums once again. It will be interesting to see whether his famous starts remain unmatched by the rest of the field or whether he will hold on to that advantage.

In 2022, the MXGP class is stacked with talent this season and adding to that is the rookie class including the likes of Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux, Honda 114 Motorsports’ Ruben Fernandez and F&H Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jed Beaton.

All eyes will be on Renaux who has made the choice to move up to the premiere class after securing his first world title in MX2 last year. Already Renaux has shown great promise, with some strong pre-season races and Matterley Basin is a track he knows how to be fast and win at. He was victorious at the British Grand Prix last year so that will no doubt add some confidence as he enters his first MXGP race this weekend.

Then there’s Fernandez who after doing a few races on the 450 last season decided to make the move up as well. The Spaniard was impressive in Mantova last year, but it will be interesting to see whether his success last season can translate into something similar this year.

And last but not least there’s also Beaton. Beaton is back on the F&H Kawasaki squad, a set-up he is familiar with having been part of the team in 2018. For his rookie season in the top class he’ll no doubt find the familiarity of the team to his advantage as he will look to learn and deliver some solid results that he is very capable of.

Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing crew are among the few teams making the change to a different manufacturer for 2022 as they will move from GasGas to Husqvarna – to become Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing. The team’s riders Pauls Jonass and Brian Bogers will take to the gate in Matterley Basin looking to deliver some top results for the manufacturer.

Another team changing colours is DIGA PROCROSS KTM RACING. Now the squad will consist of Thomas Kjer Olsen who had some impressive moments last season during his first year in MXGP, while Liam Everts is set to make the move up to MX2 for his first full season in the category.

Meanwhile BETA-SDM Corse MX Team will also welcome a new addition for the 2022 season as Alessandro Lupino will join Jeremy Van Horebeek as the pair continue to work together with Beta to develop a strong motocross bike for the brand. Lupino delivered some strong results last year and it will be interesting to see if he can build upon that together with Van Horebeek.

Team Gebben Van Venrooy Yamaha Racing will also welcome a new face in the form of a tall Lithuanian, Arminas Jasikonis who will contest for the Yamaha team alongside Calvin Vlaanderen. The pair both have some pre-season races under their belts so it will be interesting to see what they can bring to Great Britain.

Finally, Nicholas Lapucci of Fantic Factory Team Maddii will take on the challenge of racing a two-stroke against the 450cc machines in the premiere class. This is an interesting move for Lapucci who was very comfortable on the two-stroke last season as he clinched the EMX250 title.

While things are set to be exciting in MXGP, the MX2 class is bound to deliver just as much action.

Red Bull KTM factory Racing’s Tom Vialle will look to claim back the MX2 world title after an injury took him out of the running for his second championship last year. Now Vialle will arrive in Matterley Basin healthy which will of course be a much better start to his season compared to 2021.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts will be among his biggest rivals as he will go for gold for the third year in a row. Geerts came short last season as Renaux’s consistency gave him the upper hand, but having podiumed at the British Grand Prix previously, there’s a big chance we could see the Belgian on the box this weekend.

Big podium threats this season will be Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay De Wolf and Roan Van de Moosdijk. De Wolf has been gained a lot of confidence in the last year, having podiumed several times in MX2, he now has what it takes to make this a regular occurrence. Meanwhile Van de Moosdijk is in a very similar position, but it will be interesting to see how well he has settled into the factory Husqvarna team after making the switch from F&H Kawasaki.

Conrad Mewse is an obvious name to look out for this weekend, as he will look to put his best foot forward at his home Grand Prix. Mewse has often had some nice performances on home soil in Matterley Basin and this season will be no exception.

Also looking to put on a show for the home fans will be Taylor Hammal of DRT Kawasaki alongside his new teammate Mikkel Haarup. The pair will no doubt be aiming for top results for the team’s home race and with that being the GP organised by the team owner Steve Dixon. For Haarup, this could be a nice opportunity to solidify his intentions for this year and a podium could be the perfect way to do it. The Dane has podiumed in Matterley Basin before, finishing third overall in 2020 during his first official season in MX2.

Of course, Red Bull GASGAS Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini and Simon Längenfelder are another pair to look out for as Guadagnini will make his debut with GASGAS and Längenfelder as part of the factory De Carli team. For Guadagnini, the British GP could be an opportunity to start his season with a bang, having secured his first ever MX2 podium there just a year ago.

This year’s MX2 championship will welcome some new faces including Liam Everts of the DIGA PROCROSS KTM RACING team. Having previously won in Matterley Basin during his EMX days, Everts will of course be motivated to follow in the footsteps of his father who was a regular winner at the British Grand Prix. But that aside, this year will be a learning curve for the young Belgian and it will be interesting to see what he can deliver.

Hakon Fredriksen is another newcomer to MX2 as he will represent Honda 114 Motorsports in 2022. A multi-time podium finisher in the EMX250 class, it will be interesting to see how he will manage the transition from EMX to MX2 this year. Hitachi KTM Fuelled by Milwaukee’s newest addition Kay Karssemakers will be in a similar situation as he will be making the move up from EMX as well.

In 2022, we will also see the return of Kevin Horgmo in the world championship, after the Norwegian stepped back to EMX250 last year, where he finished as runner up. Now part of the F&H Kawasaki Racing Team, Horgmo will no doubt be keen for a superb performance this weekend to get the ball rolling.

Finally, another name to look out for this season is Andrea Adamo of SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery. The Italian had some good top 10 results, especially in the second half of the season. So, it would be good to see him build upon that this year.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP & MX2 Teams Look Fast & Furious in 2022

When the gate drops, the talking stops and with the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championship fast approaching, the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP and MX2 teams are revved up and ready to get the new season underway. Back with a familiar yet strong line-up in 2022, both teams are looking fit, fast and motivated for the new MXGP season, which will kick off at the spectacular Matterley Basin venue in Winchester, England, next weekend.

As announced in 2021, the reigning MX2 World Champion Maxime Renaux has moved up from the 250cc class, MX2, to the 450cc class, MXGP. The 21-year-old 'Power Rookie' was drafted into the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team at the end of 2021 and is poised to race a YZ450FM inside the premier class alongside his new teammates Jeremy Seewer and Glenn Coldenhoff.

Seewer will again spearhead the charge in MXGP. The five-time FIM Motocross World Championship silver medalist hopes to build on the same Grand Prix winning form he showed at the end of last season. "The MXGP class will be super tough again this year as well, so my goal for 2022 is to get the best out of myself at every single race to be on the podium as much as possible" he explained, "I feel like I'm on a level at the moment I've never really been before so this sounds yeah good to me, but you know after, we will see the competition because nobody ever sleeps they all improve!"

Seewer's search for World Championship glory will not come without a challenge from his highly acclaimed teammate Coldenhoff, who is also motivated to collect more pieces of podium silverware. "The ultimate goal has always been the same," the Dutchman said, "I live to win. For sure it's difficult, I mean if you look at the field you know it's very very competitive, but I think the most important thing is to stay consistent be all the time up there every single weekend that's with only one goal, and that's to win."

As for the rookie, Renaux has quickly become the posterchild of Yamaha's strong strategy to develop the next generation of MXGP champions from within its own ranks. The young Frenchman has been with Yamaha for more than a decade and has secured two world titles on his way up to the very top of the Yamaha Racing pyramid. "It's really nice to be a Factory rider in my rookie season in 450," he smiled, "I really love the bike and the behavior of the engine really suits my style so I can be more clean and more safe and secure on the bike. I think I'm going to make a big step and I will make a big improvement this season again."

Last year was one for the history books for the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team, as they enter their 25th year in blue this season. The team won their first-ever MX2 World Championship with Maxime Renaux in 2021 and became the first-ever Yamaha team to secure the gold and silver medals inside the MX2 World Championship in the same season. As a result, Yamaha also successfully defended the Manufacturers' world title.

Back for more in 2022, the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team has retained its young stars Jago Geerts and Thibault Benistant. As one of the most decorated riders in the lower capacity class, MX2, with 53 top-three race finishes, 20 races wins and 27 podiums to his credit, Geerts enters his fifth season with Yamaha and the team determined to achieve the goal of winning the World Championship. "I'm really determined to do well this season," he reaffirmed, "I'm in really good shape physically and I feel good on the bike, so I'm looking forward to the new season. I was second in 2020 and second in 2021, so for sure, I want a little bit more this year and hopefully I can make it happen."

Completing Yamaha's Factory line-up after an impressive rookie season where he celebrated a maiden podium finish and two race wins, Benistant is excited to keep progressing up the ranks in MX2. "I feel really good on the YZ250FM" he expressed, "the more I ride with this bike more I feel good so it's nice. In 2022, my goal for this season is to be more consistent, more on the box and to take some good starts."

Motocross fans don't have long to wait for racing action to commence; the MXGP and MX2 riders will line up for the first Grand Prix of 2022 next weekend. Each class will have two practice sessions and a qualifying race on Saturday 19th February, followed by two championship races on Sunday 20th.
