LIQUI MOLY Becomes Lubricant Partner of MXGP

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 12 January 2022– LIQUI MOLY enters the FIM Motocross World Championship (MXGP). From the upcoming season, the German oil and additive specialist will be the exclusive lubricant partner for the series as well as the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations (MXoN) and the FIM Snowcross World Championship (SNX). “Both technology and riders can also rely on us off road,” says Peter Baumann, Marketing Director at LIQUI MOLY.

The company offers an extensive range of chemicals for two-wheel machines: from motor oils to gear oils, fork oils, additives, greases, service sprays and cleaning products to brake fluids, chain oils and leather care products. In total, there are over 100 products specifically for motorcycles, including some developments especially for the off-road sector.

“This makes LIQUI MOLY a strong partner who will also provide us with important technological support,” says David Luongo, CEO of Infront Moto Racing, who is responsible for promoting the racing series. “We look forward to benefiting from the expertise of this oil specialist.”

LIQUI MOLY will also be the title sponsor for the MXGP races in Germany. "Motorbike fans already know us from MotoGP, where we have been the official oil supplier for all teams in Moto2 and Moto3 for many years. Enduro fans also know who we are from our cooperation with Betamotors," says Peter Baumann, Marketing Director at LIQUI MOLY. “By showing our commitment to MXGP, MXoN and SNX, we want to specifically target the off-road sector and make them curious about our tailor-made products.”

LIQUI MOLY has not only continuously expanded its motorcycle range in recent years. Sales also increased more in this segment than the company's total sales. “This year we will generate three times the turnover than we did five years ago,” says Peter Baumann. “This shows that more and more motorbikers are convinced of our quality.”

About LIQUI MOLY

With around 4,000 items, LIQUI MOLY offers a global, uniquely broad range of automotive chemicals: Motor oils and additives, greases and pastes, sprays and car care, glues and sealants. Founded in 1957, LIQUI MOLY develops and produces exclusively in Germany. There it is repeatedly voted the best oil brand. The company sells its products in more than 150 countries and generated € 611 million in sales in 2020.

Herlings and Racing the Number One in 2022

For the first time in 20 years, the premier class in motocross will have a racer running the number one for a full season. MXGP champion Jeffrey Herlings mentioned on his social media yesterday that he will in fact run number one on his Red Bull KTM Factory Racing machine in 2022.

Back a month or so ago we asked Herlings if the comments he was making on his social media about racing with the number one in 2022 was just his own hype, or he really wanted to run the number one on his bike for the first time ever.

“I haven’t decided yet, “Herlings told us back in December. “If I race with the number one, I feel a little bit arrogant or cocky, but then again, I have never run with the number one plate before. Maybe this is my last chance, you never know. I would be gutted if I never run the number one, but then again, the 84 is like the 94 for Marquez or the 44 for Hamilton. 84 is my number and everyone knows 84 is Herlings, but I haven’t decided yet. Of course, I put stuff on social media to fire everyone up and I haven’t decided yet if I wear the number in 2022, but I have to decide pretty quickly. For now, I don’t know, but I did wear the number one in the beach race last weekend.”

Then this week, “The Bullet” told the world that he will in fact run number one. I for one am pretty excited to see this number in the premier class for the first time since I think Mickeal Pichon back in 2003.

“After 5 world championships,” Herlings said. “I will finally run the big #1 in 2022. I never had the nerve to do so before, but at this point of my career, it could be the last chance I could ever run it who knows. I want to take the opportunity while its there. It’s a little change for everyone after all those years on #84 but I will be super excited to do so. And after the #1 I will definitely go back to #84 as #84 is my real number.”

So, while we have some riders changing teams, which is always cool to see riders in different colours in the new season, we also have the World Champion racing with the number that shows you are “The Man” in the class.

I can’t wait for when he comes out in practice for round one at the Matterley Basin circuit on February 19 and 20 carrying a number all the old school racers rode with back in the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and in the era of Pichon back in 2003. Be it De Coster, Robert, Aberg, Thorpe or so many others, this will be a special moment for the toughest championship in the World of motocross.

Jeffrey Herlings: Defending in 2022

Jeffrey Herlings of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team is as tough as they come. Having fought through one injury after another, the Dutchman never gave up his chase for a fifth Motocross World Championship, and having already won titles in 2012, 2013, 2016 and 2018, he felt the past two years of injury in 2019 and 2020 had to stop.

While he did get landed on in the Grand Prix at the Oss circuit and busted his shoulder, he recovered quickly and set about making up a bunch of points he has lost due to missing the second race in Oss and the Grand Prix of Czech Republic at the Loket circuit. Still, the mind set has been never give-up, no matter what.

“I kept saying to myself,” Herlings said. “After all the bad luck, all the injuries, I just kept saying to myself, I have come too far this year to not make it happen and I told myself that over and over again. I just knew I would do it and I did it.”

While the KTM rider crashed three times during the triple header in Trentino, Italy, he found his mojo and rattled off two GP victories in the final two rounds of the championship in Mantova and it was when the pressure was really on full beam, that he came through with flying colours.

“The pressure was on and Tim was the first to crack with the start thing and entering the track in the wrong place and due to that he lost a lot of points and he didn’t win a race the last four races when it counted, because he made some slight mistakes, so he was out of the championship battle first. Then Romain, I wouldn’t say he cracked, but he also made a mistake in the last race when it was all about the championship. So, I was the guy who didn’t make a mistake when it really counted. It was tough, because none of us were in that position before, well I was in 2014 in Mexico when I rode with a broken femur, but that was a totally different situation where I was riding to survive more than battle for the championship. I think it was tough for all of us and I came out on top. The season is hardly finished, and we look forward to next year.”

And now with that MXGP title in his pocket, Herlings has already started to prepare for 2022 and with a new bike from KTM, he is working over-time to get it sorted for the opening round of the championship at Matterley Basin on February 20.

“Obviously with Tony retiring, he is not on a full program anymore. Jorge isn’t riding so much anymore, but I believe he is back on the bike now, but I am not sure and the American guys riding the new bike, but preparing for supercross, so basically, I am the only guy riding the new bike outdoors. I put in a lot of hours to try and get the bike better, doing a lot of laps. It is a new bike and needs time to have it fully how we want it.”

“We will only know the improvements when we are actually racing, because when you are riding alone and just clicking off laps, nobody is matching your speed or battling. The new bike seems to have better handling, I think it will give more traction on tracks like Turkey, or Arco, I believe it will be better there. It is something we have to see next year, but the feeling is that is the area where it has improved. Until now it is good on every single track we have ridden, and the older bike was from 2018, so we have four years of feedback on that bike. We made minor changes throughout the years on that older bike, but now we need to figure it all out again on the new one.”

With two pre-season races to run for the Dutchman, in France and England, he will come into the opening MXGP round with confidence and a bike that might just make his job in 2022 a little easier. For now, though, it is the cold winter days at Lommel, and other tracks around Europe where you can find the World MXGP champion.

Honda 114 Motorsports Reveal 2022 Line-Up

After a very successful 2021 season highlighted by the 5 podiums of the rising Spanish talent, Ruben Fernandez in the MX2 World Championship, Team Honda 114 Motorsports will be even stronger for the new 2022 campaign!

After a stunning debut in Mantova this year in the MXGP class Ruben Fernandez will step up to MXGP World Championship for 2022 on board his new CRF450RW ready to fight for the top positions of the most competitive class on the planet.

Besides Fernandez in MXGP, Team 114 Motorsports will line up in the MX2 class the young, Norwegian talent, Hakon Fredriksen who impressed this year securing 2 wins and 4 podiums in the EMX250 despite being only 19 years old.

Again, for the 2022 season Team 114 Motorsports will line up two ladies in the WMX World Championship with the confirmation of the Aussie, Tahlia O’Hare who finished in the top 10 in the championship this year and looking for more in 2022 and the new recruit, the very young Norwegian Martine Hughes who will make her debut in this class in 2022.

Ruben: “I will be riding for 114 motorsports for the 2022 season. Considering the good results, we got last year and how good I felt with everyone on the team I am happy I am able to work with them for another year. Looking forward to this upcoming new season”.

Hakon: I’’m really excited about the new team and the new challenge stepping up to MX2. I really appreciate the opportunity! Everyone is super nice and motivated so I think we can do great things together. Also having Ruben and TJ as teammates is going to be good, I think we can push each other to a higher level. It’s cool going back to the roots riding Honda again, it’s where my racing career started. The new bike feels amazing, I’ve ridden it a few times now and already from the first test I felt comfortable! Looking forward to make it even better over the winter with the crew. Can’t wait to go racing!”

TJ: “I’m excited for the second year together with the team to keep making progress and putting some nice races together. I like how everyone in the team works together and am happy to have the opportunity to continue”.

Livia Lancelot Team Manager: “After a successful season in 2021 , I’m really happy to line up next season with Ruben again but on the 450cc this time. I’m sure that this class will suit him better. I’m also really happy to keep working with Tahlia, she didn’t have the time to show all her potential yet so I’m happy that we have more time. Then we have Two new riders in the Team with Hakon and Martine, I can’t wait to start working with all of them”.

Gordon Crockard: “With the 2021 season concluded only some weeks ago and the 2022 season set to start racing soon, the off season is minimal and the team have little time to rest and recharge. We have confidence that the team will be ready and give our riders their best opportunity to maximise their potential entering into the up-shift of categories for both Ruben to MXGP and Hakon to MX2. Ruben has the task of mastering the mighty 450 class and showed us already he has the minerals necessary, however this is his rookie year and with such a short off season we have to act with patience and take steps respectfully. Hakon returns to the Honda family onboard the all new CRF250R, colours I fondly remember him representing as an EMX150 race winner in the Honda 150 European Championship. MX2 is a step up for Hakon, but with the new CRF250R and the team structure, I think he has his best opportunity to showcase himself well”.
