Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing to Officially Represent Husqvarna Motorcycles in MXGP

Husqvarna Motorcycles is pleased to announce that Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing will officially represent the brand in the MXGP World Championship in 2022. Joining forces with the prestigious team will see both racers, Pauls Jonass and Brian Bogers, compete aboard proven FC 450 machinery with the highly talented duo excited for the new season to begin later this month on February 2022.

With Standing Construct Husqvarna retaining the services of former MX2 World Champion Pauls Jonass alongside the very capable Dutch racer Brian Bogers, the team looks to build upon its highly positive 2021 term in the MXGP World Championship which brought multiple podiums and top-five results for both riders.

Beginning with the MXGP of Great Britain on February 20, the 20-round MXGP series is scheduled to return to a traditional calendar with a two-day racing format and travel the globe to ensure a true world championship. With both Pauls and Brian excited for the new season after a positive pre-season period spent testing and training, the stage is set for both riders to accomplish their goals in 2022.

Pauls Jonass: “We’re not far away from the new season which is really exciting and moving over to race on Husqvarna machinery again, I really feel that 2022 will be a great season for myself and the whole team. Being able to stay with the Standing Construct team is perfect for me as we put in a lot of hard work before last season, and I know that this will give us a solid foundation going into 2022. We have goals to achieve together and I think that what we have built up over the last year will make a big difference this year. This off season has been really short and a lot of hard work has been done in preparation for the first round. With the team we have been really busy adjusting to the new bike and so far, everything has been positive and I felt comfortable on the FC 450 right away. Overall, I’m super excited for 2022 and I can’t wait to get started.”

Brian Bogers: “I’m really excited for the new season. The move over to Husqvarna machinery has not been a big change and the Standing Construct Husqvarna team has provided me with an amazing bike, just like they did last year. We’re going back to a two-day format for GP weekends in 2022 which is another positive change for me as there will be a lot more track time to really dial in the bike for each round. It’s not too long until the new season starts and I'm really excited for round one at Matterley Basin. The Standing Construct team is amazing and feels like a family to me, so this will for sure help me to achieve my goals. In 2021 I claimed many top-five results so my goal for 2022 will be to be up front and inside the top five more consistently. With this team and my new bike I’ve no doubt that I can achieve this.”

Tim Mathys – Standing Construct Husqvarna Factory Racing Team Manager: “We are really proud that we have the confidence of Husqvarna Motorcycles to officially represent the brand in MXGP. As they are one of the pioneers of offroad bikes with such a great history and reputation, it’s a really exciting new chapter for the team. We have enjoyed a great two years running the GASGAS program in MXGP and I think we did a good job with winning an MXGP round and getting several podiums, but now being responsible to represent Husqvarna in the biggest motocross championship in the world is another huge honour. With Pauls Jonass and Brian Bogers, we have two riders who have proven to be able to ride inside top five in MXGP, and with their age I think the extra experience from the past season will make them even stronger in 2022. Both riders feel very comfortable within the team and we are very happy with their professionalism, so that’s a good base to keep working from. We will keep the same crew for the new season. Everyone is very experienced, and they have all been working together for many years. With Wim van Hoof overseeing the team I am convinced we have one of the most capable teams in the paddock so I look forward to 2022 with lots of confidence.”

Robert Jonas – VP Motorsports Offroad: “Moving Husqvarna Motorcycles’ MXGP racing efforts over to the Standing Construct team was an easy decision because of their achievements on track, and their professionalism and work ethic away from it. They have done an incredible job to raise the profile of the GASGAS brand over the last two seasons in MXGP, and I strongly believe that they will do the same for Husqvarna Motorcycles in 2022. The team clearly has a great atmosphere and a really strong bond, which creates the perfect environment for both Pauls and Brian to achieve their goals. I wish them both, and the whole team, the greatest of success in 2022."

Managing Matterley Basin 2022

There is no doubt, a bunch of riders in the MXGP class will arrive at the Matterley Basin circuit in less than two weeks’ time with the goal to get through the weekend, but also gain some momentum and confidence for the future rounds of the 2022 MXGP championship.

With two of the 2021 major players out of the picture in round one (Jeffrey Herlings and Romain Febvre both recovering from injury), that does open the door for others, names like MXGP rookie and 2021 MX2 World champion Maxine Renaux, new Kawasaki factory signing Ben Watson and of course, the young and sensational Jorge Prado of the Red Bull GasGas Factory team.

While these riders are all preparing for battle, the team personnel are all looking at what they can do the make sure their riders have success in England, and in fact, for the whole 2022 season.

Of course, the big favourite in England will be four-time World motocross champion Tim Gajser and with Herlings and Febvre out of the running for a GP win, Gajser and his HRC team expect big things early in 2022. Marcus Pereira de Freitas the HRC General Manager can’t wait to get up and running.

“It is great to have both Tim and Mitch under the awning this year,” Pereira de Freitas said. “They are both working really hard to be ready again for the new season. The break was very short from the end of the 2021 campaign so it has been a very busy period and I must thank everyone in Team HRC for continuing to work hard to make sure we are all set for the first gate drop. Tim always does the work necessary, both with bike testing and his own physical training so I always trust him to do exactly what he needs to do. Mitch has been back in Europe for a little bit now and all the reports have been positive and now we get to test with him before the first MXGP and that will give us an idea of where he is. We know it won’t be easy as the level has risen since he last raced but he is very determined, and we will make sure he has everything he needs to get back to top of the class. It sounds like we are going back to a two-day format, which I think is good for the sport, so we need to be ready for that, but overall, I think Team HRC is in a strong position for 2022.”

Antti Pyrhönen of the Kawasaki factory team is excited for his rider, Ben Watson, who will enter Matterley Basin with some pressure as the leading British rider in 2022. Pyrhonen though knows that with the right support Watson can be a force at the top end of the MXGP class, as he showed last weekend in a French International.

“Ben was riding well all day,” Pyrhonen said. “Especially in the last race he showed what he can do, and we are really happy with a good feeling. These races are really important as we acquire more knowledge of both the bike and Ben, and it’s important that he can build his confidence with good results. The mind-set has to be that these pre-season races are part of the training programme. We knew from the past that Lacapelle is quite tacky at this time of the year, so it was good training for the first GP at Matterley; the track there also has many ruts and is very technical. “

While Jeffrey Herlings will miss the opening round of the series, he could be back soon after, or at least that is what we all hope. His team’s technical man Dirk Gruebel is excited for that return, because KTM have done a lot of work on the bikes for 2022.

“It’s all change for this season,” Gruebel said. “Not only with the rider line-up for Red Bull KTM but also the new SX-Fs. We are also still dealing with the situation of Rene’s loss and having two racers instead of three. However, the goals remain the same and when we look at the potential of both Jeffrey and Tom and the work, they have done in the off-season then we are confident. MXGP gets going pretty early in the year and we should have the flyaways again after missing out for two years. We know it will be a long season, but it will be good to get back to a normal way of racing.”

After the injury to Herlings, Red Bull KTM team manager Joel Smets was bitterly disappointed and just hopes his rider can come back when 100% fit and continue his work from the 2021 season, when he picked up his fifth World motocross championship.

“Of course, this is very disappointing for Jeffrey,” Smets said. “Also, for the team and the championship. Trying to look at the positive side the injury is not as complicated as his foot problem in 2019. The operation took some time, but everything went well, and we hope Jeffrey can be out of a cast in less than two weeks and can even start some light training such as swimming and some other activities. Then we’ll have to see how he recovers to plan his GP return.”

So now with just 10 or so days before the team trucks roll into Matterley Basin, you just know all the riders, mechanics, team managers and team personnel are working over-time to give their riders the upper hand.

Jeffrey Herlings Undergoes Successful Foot Surgery

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings has completed a surgical process to fix a broken heel bone in his left foot due to a mishap while riding in Spain on Monday 31st of January.

The reigning MXGP World Champion, who claimed victory in the opening round of the Spanish national championship the day beforehand as part of his warm-up preparations for the forthcoming 2022 MXGP season, was unseated on a small and routine jump section of the former Grand Prix site RedSand MX complex near Castellon.

Herlings, 27, hit his left heel in the resulting crash. The Dutchman organised travel back to his home in Belgium and after consultation, underwent surgery performed by Dr Stefaan Verfaillie (who worked on his previous ailment in 2019) to insert several screws and a supporting plate to fix the damage.

Jeffrey, his medical advisers and the Red Bull KTM team will now oversee his recovery for a return to action when fully fit and ready to race.

Jeffrey Herlings: “We’re paying the price for a ‘nothing’ crash. I think I might have hit a small stone on the take-off and that put me over the bars. The impact was pretty big on my left foot and we needed to get it fixed the best we could. Big thanks to the medical staff for looking after me and getting my foot repaired, again! Also to the whole Red Bull KTM team: we’d worked hard for this 2022 season and the goal now is to be back and winning as soon as we can.”

Joel Smets, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team Manager: “Of course this is very disappointing for Jeffrey, the team and the championship. Trying to look at the positive side the injury is not as complicated as his foot problem in 2019. The operation took some time but everything went well and we hope Jeffrey can be out of a cast in less than two weeks and can even start some light training such as swimming and some other activities. Then we’ll have to see how he recovers to plan his GP return.”
