Romain Febvre Injury Update

Romain Febvre underwent successful surgery on his right leg that he broke last weekend; the factory Kawasaki rider will rest for a few weeks before starting preparation for the 2022 season.

After being transferred to the hospital Ambroise Pare at Boulogne Billancourt where he had further examinations, Romain underwent surgery and was treated for a double fracture of the tibia and fibula of the right leg. Following successful surgery Romain remains positive for his full recovery.

Romain Febvre: “Not the way I wanted to finish the season for sure! I was happy with my riding, didn’t took any risks, and I felt more and more comfortable with the track when I had this crash. In my career I already recover from injuries, I know what that means and for sure I will be back stronger.”

MXGP wishes Romain a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the bike soon!

Maxime Renaux Signs for Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team on Two Year Deal

Yamaha Motor Europe is delighted to confirm that reigning FIM MX2 Motocross World Champion Maxime Renaux will make the step up to the premier MXGP class in 2022. The 21-year-old Frenchman will join the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team, where he will campaign a YZ450FM in the FIM Motocross World Championship for the next two years, at least until the end of the 2023 season.

Renaux has been with Yamaha for more than a decade and has worked his way up the Yamaha Racing pyramid, ever since he was a young star-on-the-rise on a YZ85.

In 2015, the young talent celebrated three EMX125 wins aboard a GYTR kitted YZ125 and eventually won his first World Title with an impressive victory at the Junior 125cc World Championship in El Molar, Spain, in that same year. After the 2016 and 2017 seasons were marred by injury, the determined Frenchman entered the lower capacity premier class, MX2, as a wild card in 2018 and instantly showed great potential.

At the tender age of 18, Renaux completed his first full-term in MX2 in 2019 where he managed to steer his YZ250F to a maiden podium finish on his way to seventh overall in the final classification. The following year, in 2020, the Yamaha ace quickly established himself as a title threat. He eventually finished third in the MX2 World Championship after celebrating his first-ever Grand Prix race and overall win at the MXGP of Italy in Faenza.

After many notable performances throughout his first two years in MX2, Renaux was drafted into the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 team and substantially improved his riding and racecraft. In his debut season as a ‘Factory’ Yamaha rider, the ‘959’ took his YZ250FM to 24 top-three finishes, 10 race wins, 14 podium finishes and five Grand Prix wins on his way to title glory in the 2021 FIM MX2 World Championship.

For 2022, Renaux is ready for the next chapter and challenge in his career. After the Paris Supercross at the end of November, the French star will step up to the premier class, where he will join seasoned MXGP riders Jeremy Seewer and Glenn Coldenhoff under the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP awning.

Maxime Renaux - Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Rider

“I’m really excited for the new challenge and the next chapter, to move to MXGP. I know it’s going to be an all-new challenge, and it is the most important part of my career because once you reach MXGP you are at the top, there is no class to move forward. I feel ready for it, and I am really looking forward to making this experience a good one, and a long one. I have tested the bike, and I feel already really good and really comfortable. I’ve been riding a 450 in the past, so it’s not a new bike for me, but it is the first time on a Factory YZ450FM, and I already feel super ready for it, so now we will spend the winter testing and developing the bike to suit me as best it can, so that we are ready for next season. I’m looking forward to everything.”

Louis Vosters - Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP Team Owner

“We are very pleased to be welcoming Maxime into the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team alongside Jeremy and Glenn. The MXGP World Championship is hugely competitive, but Maxime has the speed and skills to have a promising rookie season. He has spent all of his career inside the Yamaha family and Maxime is an example of the successful Yamaha pyramid, which focuses on bringing a rider through the junior ranks to the pinnacle of motocross racing. I look forward to a great collaboration.”

Alexandre Kowalski - Yamaha Motor Europe Off-Road Racing Manager

“Maxime has been with Yamaha since he was very young. He is very much a part of the Yamaha Family and with us since he was racing an 85cc. He won the Junior 125cc World Championship on a YZ125 and has progressed nicely up the Yamaha Racing pyramid to reach the Factory MX2 team in 2021, where he won the MX2 World Title. After winning the MX2 World Championship this year, Maxime is ready for a new challenge and to move up to MXGP. He already has quite some experience on the YZ450F and has already won some big beach races in France. Yamaha Motor Europe is looking forward to the new challenge with Maxime, and we are extremely happy to continue with him for another two years, or more. We will fully support him in his first two years inside the premier class, where we look forward to writing another nice chapter, this time against the big guns of MXGP.”

David Luongo – MXGP Mag Editorial – November 2021

Dear MXGP Friends,

Epic! This is the word that comes to my mind to recap the last month and the end of the 2021 MXGP World Championship!

This season has definitively entered the history of the MXGP as one of the most disputed, spectacular and exciting of its kind. Before MXGP of Spain, Jeffrey Herlings, Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser were separated by just 10 points. More than 20,000 fans came to the Madrid’s track to support Jorge Prado and be spectators of this amazing racing! The organizer of the MXGP of Spain won the Award of the Best Organizer of the season and I can say that they really put the level of welcoming the MX fans to a very high level!

But coming back to the last sprint of the season, with 5 races in a row in Italy in 20 days on two very different tracks of Pietramurata and Mantova. Nobody could really predict what would happen! And race after race the pressure and the show continued to reach new highs. The MXGP of Pietramurata (Trentino 2) has been probably the most beautiful race of the last 30 years with the battle between the 3 top guns of our championship. The Grand Finale in Mantova with the famous “Winner take it all” during the last race will be in the minds of everybody forever! Romain and Jeffrey started the last gate drop of the year tied on points, something that has never happened in our sport (after 875 points distributed!). I would like to congratulate Jeffrey Herlings for the win but also Romain Febvre and Tim Gajser for their fantastic season!

The last Grand Prix of the season was also very emotional because it was the end of the MXGP career of Antonio Cairoli. Tony is a fantastic champion, but also a fantastic person. He has been racing in the World Championship for 18 years and has been part of the development of the MXGP championship and its entry into the modern era! He won 9 World Titles but the most important thing, he always has been a fantastic ambassador for our sport! On behalf of all the Infront Moto Racing team, I would like to thank him for all that he did for our sport!

Maxime Renaux won his very first MX2 World Championship after a very strong season and performance, putting him on the top of the hierarchy of the MX2 category. It will be very interesting to see next season as the level of MX2 is getting compact again with Vialle and Geerts!

This fantastic conclusion of the MXGP World Championship is the best reward for all the organizers, partners and workers that never stopped believing and investing in the MXGP despite the Covid-19 crisis and all the challenges that it brought the last 2 years. This last month and all the emotions that our favorite sport created to our fans worldwide is the biggest reward for all of us. The last two years have been very difficult to allow us to deliver a complete championship, but we managed to make 18 Grand Prix and the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations. We are on the right path back to normality! The answer from the public was fantastic. From the MXGP of Germany we were able to host more public and we saw the attendance growing up until the end of the season.

I would like to thank the FIM, FIM Europe, all our organizers, our partners, the manufacturers for their great support and all the riders, from the EMX65cc to the MXGP, for the great show they gave to all of us this season!

We cannot wait to arrive in February 2022 to start again the engines!

All-Time Top Ten

When Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider Jeffrey Herlings captured his fifth FIM Motocross World Championship title and his 99th Grand Prix victory, the Dutchman joined a very elite group of legends from the past. Three MX2 titles and two in the premier class saw Herlings move from eight in the all-time list to number four and you could even place him at number three just behind Stefan Everts and Antonio Cairoli.

Of course, the two leaders in the group, Everts and Cairoli have 10 and 9 world titles each and 101 and 94 GP wins. Amazing to think that their statistics are so close and that their careers followed each other so closely. When Everts retired in 2006, the sport needed a leader and Cairoli took that role with both hands and would of course eventually nearly pass the King on the all-time list.

Belgian legend Joel Robert, who passed away this year was THE MAN for 30 years with his six world titles and 50 GP wins and one of the highlights of Everts career was watching him break the long-standing records of Robert, who had won his GP and titles in the 1960s and 1970s.

While Roberts numbers came from the 250 class, which was not the premier class in his era, his statistics have always been respected and his place in our sport always been right at the very top.

Now, some 50 years after Robert was the king of the 250 class, “The Bullet” closes in on the Belgians world title number and has doubled his GP win tally. For that reason, it is hard to really know which rider belongs at number three on the all-time list, but for me, it is Herlings.

What is also exciting about the all-time list is the fact Team HRC factory rider Tim Gajser is also climbing the ladder. His four world titles and 33 GP wins place him at number nine in the list, but another title and a handful of GP wins, and he too would pass four of the all-time greats in Roger De Coster, Eric Geboers, Georges Jobe and Joel Smets. Do I think he can do it? I am nearly positive he will.

Imagine, three riders from the class of 2021 would end up second, third and fourth in the all-time list. We already knew this year’s legends will be remembered forever, but to have three inside the top five is something very special.

All-time Top Ten (Going by Statistics)

1.Stefan Everts 10 World titles 101 GP wins

2.Antonio Cairoli 9 World titles 94 GP wins

3.Joel Robert 6 World titles 50 GP wins

4.Jeffrey Herlings 5 World titles 99 GP wins

5.Joel Smets 5 World titles 57 GP wins

6.Eric Geboers 5 World titles 39 GP wins

7.Roger De Coster 5 World titles 36 GP wins

8.Georges Jobe 5 World titles 28 GP wins

9.Torsten Hallman 4 titles 37 GP wins

10.Tim Gajser 4 titles 33 GP wins
