Much more to Motocross than racing

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 11 June 2020 - With the current pause in the FIM Motocross World Championships due to the ongoing Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the FIM and MXGP Promoter Infront Moto Racing have taken the opportunity to create a series of informative videos that shares important information and provides a unique behind the scenes insight to the sport. The short films showcase the role of the FIM Motocross Commission and the national federations, plus illustrate how FIM volunteers can progress to becoming FIM Officials with the correct training and experience. Whilst often unseen, the team of technical and administrative staff play a key part in ensuring the safety of riders, and in maintaining the integrity of fairness of the championship. Watch and learn as the riders go through the relevant processes before being allowed to head out on track.

David Luongo – Infront Moto Racing CEO: “Safety has always been our top priority and through the past years, the FIM MXGP Motocross World Championship has always been a pioneer in this subject. Alongside our colleagues at the FIM and the national federations, our staff take safety as their main focus, starting from the track design and preparation of the event and ensuring that all the administration and technical procedures are completed correct. The second video will provide an in-depth insight into rider safety equipment. We have been pleased to collaborate with the FIM to produce these informative films.”

Antonio Alia Portela – Director of the FIM Motocross Commission (CMS): “As we all prepare to go racing again in the coming months, we felt it was a good moment to show the work of the FIM, the national federations, Infront Moto Racing staff, FIM Officials and volunteers and the important role that they play in delivering our sport at the highest level. Safety has become a critical focus for the FIM in more recent years and especially in motocross where the riders are pushing themselves to the limit. We are sure that riders both amateur and professional can learn something from these short films. We would like to thank our promoter Infront Moto Racing for producing and supporting us with these educational videos.”

#82 MXGP Magazine: Going Solo

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 11th June 2020 – Motocross is not the easiest sport in the world. For any rider to be able to compete at a World Championship level, usually requires a world championship level budget to match. Being part of a team is great, though the majority of the grid is made-up of privateer riders, who essentially go at it alone, with the vital help of sponsors.

In this month’s MXGP Magazine we caught up with three ex-factory riders, Shaun Simpson, Kevin Strijbos and Tanel Leok, who have recently taken the leap of faith and set-up their very own teams, SS24 KTM MXGP, KSRT MX and A1 Motorsport Husqvarna.

To find out more about their decision to take this step, as well as what it takes to make the dream work, read the full feature HERE!

Don’t forget you can download the latest issue of MXGP Mag for FREE on Apple Store or Google Play.

Prado undergoes successful collarbone surgery after training crash

Two-time FIM MX2 Motocross World Champion Jorge Prado is recovering from a procedure to fix his right collarbone after a fall while training in Belgium on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old MXGP class rookie for 2020 suffered a clean break in the wake of his tumble at a circuit in Olmen, Belgium. He was transported to hospital in Herentals for examination and x-rays and entered corrective surgery the same day, performed by Dr Tom Claes, who inserted a plate to help re-join and support the bone. A scan late Tuesday evening showed the operation had been a success and Prado is expected to be back at his residence today [Wednesday]. Early indications point to a four-week rehabilitation phase if the injury heals well and the Spaniard can ride his KTM 450 SX-F once more.

Prado defied a short winter of preparation to make his MXGP debut at Matterley Basin and the British Grand Prix at end of February for the first round of the 2020 series. He has been training and working at his base in Belgium in readiness for the resumption of the FIM World Championship that is provisionally scheduled to begin again with the Grand Prix of Russia on August 2nd.

Jorge Prado: “It’s disappointing to be dealing with another injury but I’m really happy with how the operation went and how the collarbone is looking. I was riding through a fast corner and there was a rider ahead of me; I just misjudged the line. I lost the front end and went over the handlebars. At first I wasn’t sure if I’d broken anything but after about thirty minutes it was clear that something was wrong. Anyway, we are on the recovery path again and I hope to be able to do some training again after about a week and we’ll wait another three to be back on the bike. Luckily we have some time before the races start again.”

2020 FIM Junior World Championship Cancelled

(MONACO) Principality of Monaco 4th June 2020 – It is with great regret that Infront Moto Racing and the FIM must inform the 2020 FIM Junior Motocross World Championship, originally scheduled to take place on the 8th – 9th of August in Megalopolis, Greece, will not be taking place this year.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the global restrictions put in place for safety reasons, many of the 2020 events have been forced to be rescheduled to a later date.

Regarding the FIM 85cc and 125cc Junior Motocross World Championships and the FIM 65cc Junior Motocross World Cup organised for young riders from all over the world, the event could not be rescheduled beyond the end of August, as many of the riders aged between 10-17 years old will be back at school / college, and it was considered that their education remains the absolute priority.

We look forward to 2021 when we will see the return of the highly anticipated youth event. We would like to thank the FIM, the local organiser, as well as all participants and our fans for their continued support during this difficult period.

MXGP: awaiting the return of racing

As countries continue to come out of lockdown, borders opening, motocross tracks again ridden on by the best motocross riders in the World, we all begin to feel positive about seeing our sport alive again in 2020. We all get the feeling it won’t be long before we all can start booking flights and hotels and once again venture to some of the most beautiful motocross circuits in the World.

After two sensational rounds of MXGP and MX2 in England and Holland, coronavirus closed the World down, and we just waited, waited to see what the next step was, and we continued to wait until just recently when the lockdown was eased up.

For the MXGP points leader Jeffrey Herlings of the Red Bull KTM Factory team, a rider who has spent enough time on the side-lines with injury, not being able to ride when fit was a tough pill to swallow.

"It was really a nightmare," Herlings said. "I felt great. I had won the first two GPs and could not wait to travel to Argentina. But then suddenly the call came up with 'cancel it but close your agenda for the next few months. "

For our motocross riders simple things like going to their favourite practice track, or training with friends was put on hold, but now, as we have seen throughout Europe and the World things are a lot more normal than they were a month or two months ago.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Team rider Gautier Paulin was quickly into safety mode as he joined his partner and baby in their family home.

“You know,” Paulin said. “The first thing to do after they postponed Argentina was to be safe. I have my family and I am happy to be close to them and see the little one growing, so I am very grateful for this. At the beginning I was watching on the news, Yamaha also gave me advice not to ride and it wasn’t a crazy obligation, but I decided myself to put the bike in the work-shop, because it was tough for the hospitals and it wasn’t the time to go riding. I just wanted to be safe and they had enough trouble with the coronavirus.”

So now we start to wonder when the MXGP and MX2 championships will commence again. Now it is Russia and Latvia in early August, and with two months before those events are scheduled, there is some excitement for what is to come as far as news in the coming weeks.
