Horgmo and Krestinov Top the Podium in Latvia

KEGUMS (Latvia) 7 August 2021 – The European Championship races have concluded the first day of racing in Kegums, as Kevin Horgmo of SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery took an overall victory in EMX250 to edge closer to the series leader Nicholas Lapucci of Fantic Factory Team Maddii. While KMP Honda Racing’s Gert Krestinov made a perfect wildcard appearance in the EMX Open class to go 1-1 and take the overall win.

In the first EMX250 race it was Maxime Grau of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing who was the leading rider as he headed into the first and second corner. There were a few riders caught up in some crashes during the first two laps, this included Tom Guyon of Team VHR KTM Racing and Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Andrea Bonacorsi.

Grau’s time in the lead didn’t last long as Liam Everts of Liamski KTM jumped into the lead, as Kevin Horgmo of SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery battled with Federico Tuani of Fantic Factory Team Maddii for second place.

Yago Martinez, the rider of Team VRT Nordpesca Holland got a good start in the race and was running fourth ahead of Rick Elzinga of TBS Conversions Racing Team and Filip Olsson of SIXTYTWO Motorsport Husqvarna Team.

Everts then dropped from the lead down to seventh after crashing, which meant that Horgmo was the new race leader ahead of Elzinga and Lapucci who made their way up the order.

Elzinga looked like he was going to challenge Horgmo for the race win, though after a few laps the Norwegian was able to edge out to secure his first EMX250 victory, with Elzinga securing second position and Lapucci finishing what was a lonely race in third.

In race two, it was Martinez who led Lapucci, Horgmo and Mike Gwerder of WZ Racing Team. While once again a couple of riders came together and it looked like Bonacorsi was involved once again.

Lapucci though took the lead on lap four as Elzinga was making his way through the field after starting the race in around 10th and was up in 5th at that moment. It also didn’t take long for him to get around Gwerder who was trying his best to keep the Dutchman behind him.

Horgmo then also passed Martinez to move into second as Everts was having a tough race after starting down the order and then crashing to drop outside of the points after working hard to get inside the top 20. He eventually finished the race in 28th.

Lapucci then stretched his lead to 3.407 seconds over Horgmo as Martinez lost third place to Elzinga who was keen on picking up some important points for the title chase.

Lapucci then checked out of the race and won with a 9.583 as Horgmo brought it home in second and Elzinga crossing the line in third.

With a race win and a second place today in the races, Kevin Horgmo secured his first ever EMX250 overall victory as he took to the top step of the podium, while Nicholas Lapucci continued his 100% podium record with second overall and Rick Elzinga making his third consecutive podium appearance to finished on the third step.

Lapucci continues to lead the championship with a 27-point advantage over Horgmo and Elzinga who is further behind in third.

Kevin Horgmo: “Actually, it's one of the first races where I didn’t get too stressed; in both races I did quite good I had really good flow even in the rough sections of the track. I was pushing really hard in the second race because I wanted to get the maximum points for the championship; when I started thinking about the overall I made some mistakes, I got stressed and I saw that Nicholas was riding really good so I tried to calm down and be focused on the overall. The last lap was really hard because I was feeling the pressure. To win the overall has always been my dream and is always nice, I had already other chances in the past but I threw them away because of mistakes so I’m really proud of this result”.

Nicholas Lapucci: “It was a good day because I finish second overall but I’m not 100% satisfied because I didn’t’ win in the first race and my riding style wasn’t on point. In the second race I was super focused, and I really wanted the win. Now my focus is to keep the red plate until the end of the season. Next GP will be different but I’m quite confident because next round will be on hard pack track that is my favourite kind of track and I’ll do my best to win also there”.

Rick Elzinga: “I’m not completely satisfied but I’m happy that I’m being consistent; today I wasn’t feeling super comfortable and then I struggled a lot with the track especially in the first race. For me the second race was better, I had a good start, but some riders crashed in front of me and I hurt my leg so was kind of difficult to keep the flow back. Overall, I’m quite satisfied about the day because I show my potential. After Matterley Basin I changed my approach and I see what I can get race by race and do the best I can”.

The first EMX Open race saw Gert Krestinov of KMP Honda Racing and No Fear / BT Jumbo Racing Team’s Micha-Boy De Waal get a flying start as the pair were close into the first corner. Though De Waal quickly dropped to third as Jere Haavisto went through on the Dutchman.

The series leader, Davide De Bortoli started the first race in around fifth position, though by the following lap the Italian got around Dovydas Karka to move into fourth.

De Waal then got Haavisto back to move into second place as De Bortoli was making good progress to edge closer to the leaders. Lithuanian, Karka, was keeping close with De Bortoli but eventually made a mistake and lost some ground on the Italian, which allowed Simone Croci, Tim Koch and Emil Berggren to close in. In the next few laps Karka lost a few positions and eventually finished the race in 12th.

Back at the top end of the field though, Krestinov continued the lead as De Waal was pushing hard to get closer to the Estonian. A lap later De Waal lost his rear brake and went on straight as he entered the corner near the start straight and as a result, he dropped to fourth as Haavisto and De Bortoli made the most of his mistake.

Krestinov then rode his own race as he led by over 12 seconds with Haavisto failing to get any closer to the race leader. Meanwhile De Waal was making a good recovery and with two laps to go had De Bortoli in his sights for third though could not make a big enough impact to gain a position by the chequered flag. Krestinov was the race winner, Haavisto was second and De Bortoli remained third.

In the second heat it was De Bortoli who got a strong start as De Waal and Haavisto were involved in a crash.

Krestinov then took the lead from the championship leader, though made a mistake soon after which put him back to square one. Despite the mistake, the Estonian was able to fight back immediately and get out in front once again.

Karka was having a good start to his race as he was riding in third, before Honda SR Motoblouz rider Nicolas Dercourt was able to pass the Lithuanian to take his position. The pair then went after De Bortoli, though Karka was unable to stick with the two riders ahead of him as he dropped a few positions which allowed Koch and Emil Silander gain a position.

After crashing in the start of the race and having to make his way back from last, De Waal was making good progress as by lap five he was already up in seventh.

Dercourt continued his chase of De Bortoli, with the Frenchman parking the Italian to move himself into second place.

De Waal was pushing hard in the second part of the race as he managed to get around the likes of Silander and Koch, who retired from the race due to what looked like a bike issue. But for De Waal his race had just began as he got himself into fourth and was five seconds down on De Bortoli with three minutes and two laps to go.

In those next seven minutes or so, De Waal put the hammer down to pass both De Bortoli and Dercourt to finish the race in second behind Krestinov who the race winner was. Dercourt placed third in the race.

With two race victories, Gert Krestinov was the overall winner, with Micha-Boy De Waal standing in the second step of the podium, while Davide De Bortoli had a consistent day to finish on the podium once again.

De Bortoli continues to lead the championship just seven points ahead of Dercourt and De Waal who is third. Next up the EMX Open riders will head to Turkey for the final two races of the season where the 2021 championship will be decided.

Gert Krestinov: "It’s always nice to get some wins here. It’s good for me to do the European races and I got two wins. The first race to hold first position was easier, I could get a gap and easily control it whereas the second race was a little tougher and in the last two laps I saw Micha-Boy was coming so I had to wake up again and get going. It’s really good to be back in the MXGP paddock. Of course, I would like to be here all the time, but I need to see what’s best for me. I enjoyed the day, the track was really nice and my fitness was good”.

Micha-Boy De Waal: “The first race was pretty good, the start was good, I was behind Gert. After two laps my rear brake was gone and that’s why I ended up in the fence. I needed to slow down so I finished fourth which I was not too happy about. The second race the start was also good, but I crashed with two other riders and was completely last. In the first ten minutes I had no rhythm and didn’t feel good, but I knew the championship leader was a long way from me, so I needed to go to keep close, so I pushed hard and that’s what I did in the last fifteen minutes and that was pretty okay”

“I will try. 29 points in two races that will be difficult, but I will give it my all. I just hope to stay on the bike at least, that’s the main goal, I didn’t do that today, but I will go to Turkey to fight with the guys, and I hope we have some good battles”.

Davide De Bortoli: “Another decent day today. For me it was a positive day because last week I had a big crash in training, and I didn’t feel so good during the day but I tried to do my best and I am happy to be on the podium and get some points”.

“I have never seen the track in Turkey but I know it’s hard pack and I’m happy about that but there are two more races and I hope to keep the red plate for the end of the championship”.

MXGP heads to Kegums for Latvian Grand Prix

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 4 August 2021 – The FIM Motocross World Championship carries momentum into the seventh round of the series with the MXGP of Latvia this weekend at the technical sand circuit of Kegums.

The Latvian Grand Prix will conclude a four-week stint of races before we head into a three week break ahead of the Turkish double-header.

Last season Kegums hosted the very first, in the history of motocross, triple-header which kick-started the 2020 season after a long break due to a worldwide lockdown. The three races were incredibly successful and saw victories from Glenn Coldenhoff, Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings in MXGP, while in MX2 it was Tom Vialle who won the first GP, while Jago Geerts dominated the last two.

The first race to take place at the Latvian venue was back in 2005 with Sven Breugelmans winning in the MX3 category, while Marcus Norlen was victorious in the 125cc class. The first official Grand Prix to be held in Kegums was in 2009, with Antonio Cairoli winning the then MX1 class and Rui Goncalves victorious in MX2.

This year we return to Kegums for the 11th year, 12 counting the 2014 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, for what will be another interesting Grand Prix as things get more intense in the MXGP and MX2 championships.

This weekend’s races will also the fourth round of the EMX250 and EMX Open Championships. In EMX250, Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Nicholas Lapucci will look to continue his podium streak and extended his 26-point lead over SM Action YUASA Battery Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo and TBS Coversions Racing Rick Elzinga.

In EMX Open, Davide De Bortoli enters the fourth round of six, as the championship leader over Honda SR Motoblouz rider Nicolas Dercourt who is four points behind and Simon Croci who is third a further 15 points adrift.

In MXGP, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Romain Febvre will enter the Latvian race with a big confidence boost from his first ever Grand Prix victory in Lommel last weekend. Not only that, but last year Febvre got his first podium of the season in Kegums during the MXGP of Latvia on his first outing since injury, therefore big things can be expected of the Frenchman who is now second in the championship standings. Febvre has been pushing hard this season for race wins and an overall victory and in Belgium he got both, so maybe now he will be more relaxed knowing that he had achieved these things last week and will have less pressure going forward.

While the current MXGP championship leader, Tim Gajser of Team HRC will look to bounce back after two tough races in Czech Republic and Belgium where he lost some vital championship points. Last year’s Latvian triple-header was also not the easiest for the Slovenian who suffered two DNF’s, but hopefully this time around will be different, and he will be able to pick himself up and get back to winning ways.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli will no doubt be looking to get himself back on the podium in Latvia after breaking his four GP podium streak in Lommel. Last year Cairoli won the second of the three events in Kegums, so clearly, he has what it takes to win races on the hard sand circuit. His teammate Jorge Prado will also be pushing for another podium finish after a fourth-place finish in Belgium, as Jeffrey Herlings will continue his shock return to racing and no doubt will deliver some more impressive results, after a race victory in Lommel just two weeks after breaking his shoulder blade.

While the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP riders will no doubt gather in force as they will look to put the unlucky Belgian Grand Prix behind them. For Glenn Coldenhoff the MXGP of Latvia holds some special memories as back in 2015 he secured his first ever MXGP race and overall wins, while last season he added to that giving GasGas their first overall victory in MXGP, as he was victorious at the first event of three. Meanwhile Jeremy Seewer will look to take back some points and get back into contention after a slow start to his 2021 campaign, as Ben Watson continues to adapt to the competitive class and hope for more strong finishes inside the top 10.

This weekend will be special for Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonas who will head into his home Grand Prix following his first podium finish a week earlier in Belgium. Jonass has been looking strong this season so far and it was only a matter of time before we were going to see him on the podium as he consistently pushed inside the top five and thereabouts. With his first podium of the 2021 season under his belt, let’s see if he can do this on home soil or even win in Kegums for the first time ever.

For Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Arminas Jasikonis the Latvian race is the closest thing to a home GP, with Lithuanian fans always making the short trip across the border to support the tall Lithuanian. Jasikonis continues his comeback from a traumatic brain injury and has shown some great results this season so far, with some top 10 finishes. Last season Jasikonis won his first ever GP race in Kegums, so let’s see if he can deliver some more top results this time around.

In MX2, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Maxime Renaux continues to lead championship with a healthy 26-point advantage over Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Mattia Guadagnini. Renaux had a solid weekend in Belgium going 2-3 for third overall, while Guadagnini’s weekend was difficult. The Italian 14-10 after a nasty start crash in race one, with the rest of the weekend snowballing from there.

This weekend Renaux will aim for another good weekend with consistent results to extend his lead, while Guadagnini will want to put the troubles of Lommel behind him and collect some vital championship points in Kegums as he’s got Honda 114 Motorsports Ruben Fernandez breathing down his neck in the standings as he is just one point adrift of the Italian. Fernandez finished 6th overall in Belgium and has not been on the podium since Matterley Basin, so he is well overdue some strong races.

Also edging closer in the championship is Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jago Geerts who had a stellar weekend at his home race last weekend. He went 1-2 to take the overall win and make up for lost ground last season during the Belgian triple-header. Those 47 points that he picked up in Lommel have done wonders for his title chase as he moves to fourth in the standings and just two points from second place. This weekend the Belgian will no doubt be looking for some more solid points to get back into title contention as he was one of the favourites to win as we entered the season.

F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Mathys Boisrame is another rider to look out for in Latvia as he will want to bounce back from Lommel and get back on the podium. Last season in Latvia, the Frenchman got two consecutive podiums, as he was third overall in the first two GP’s therefore, he is one of the favourites for the weekend, meanwhile his teammate Roan Van De Moosdijk who also had a strong run in Kegums last year will miss out on the Latvian race due to injury.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay De Wolf will continue his successful rookie season after his race win and second overall in Lommel, as he will enter the Latvian GP more confident than ever. The young Dutchman has had some good races with his teammate Jed Beaton with the pair often running inside the top five and top 10 and it would be good to see both on the podium again, as De Wolf finished on the podium in Latvia last season in the EMX250 class.

Of course, this weekend we will also see Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle continue his return to racing after finishing seventh overall in Lommel, with P4 in race 1. It is clear that Vialle is still getting back up to speed, but he is already running well with the leaders and just needs two consistent races. Meanwhile his teammate Rene Hofer has also had some good races this season and will hope to continue this run and hopefully battle inside the top five again this weekend.

Jost and Spies take victories in the EMX races in Czech Republic

LOKET (Czech Republic) 24 July 2021 – The first part of the weekend’s races in Loket have concluded with victories by Simon Jost in the EMX Open category and Maximilian Spies of Fantic Factory Team Maddii in EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing.

In EMX Open race one, it was Joel Van Mechelen who got a good start, with Filippo Zonta and Simone Croci right there as well. The championship leader (at the time) Nicolas Dercourt of Honda SR Motoblouz meanwhile was down in around tenth.

Zonta then took the lead, with Croci following as well, as Dercourt dropped to 14th.

Croci then closed in on the race leader, as Davide De Bortoli and Simon Jost battled for third, with the pair exchanging positions several times over the course of the lap.

Jost then dropped to fifth as De Bortoli and Micha-Boy De Waal of No Fear/Jumbo BT Racing Team both went through on the Slovakian rider.

Croci then briefly took the lead from Zonta, as De Bortoli and De Waal closed in on the leaders with just over 3 seconds separating the top four.

De Bortoli then passed Croci on lap eight and was able to get Zonta as well to become the new race leader. Zonta then crashed and re-joined in fifth to eventually finish the race in fifth place ahead of Jost.

De Bortoli took the win, with De Waal and Croci second and third, as Dercourt struggled to make his way up the field and ended the race ninth.

As the gate dropped for race two, it was Zonta who led the way, as De Waal had a big crash in the second corner. Zonta carried on out front, with De Bortoli wasting no time applying the pressure onto the leader.

By lap two, De Bortoli was the new race leader, Jost started to close in on Zonta as he set his sights on second place. Meanwhile Dercourt was having a much better start to the race as he battled in 6th.

De Waal did pick himself up after the crash in the start and managed to get up and carried on for 10 laps until deciding to pull out of the race.

The attention quickly moved to the front as Zonta and Jost went at it for second. The pair had a nice battle that saw Jost go through, for Zonta to fight back immediately but eventually it was the Slovakian rider who came out on top.

With 8 minutes and 2 laps to go, the gap between De Bortoli and Jost was 3.134 seconds, but a couple of laps later we saw some drama as De Bortoli crashed out of the lead.

Jost then inherited first place, with Tim Koch second and Zonta third, as De Bortoli dropped to fourth position.

De Bortoli then crashed again to finish the race 10th, while Jost took his first ever EMX race win, with Koch second and Zonta third.

In terms of the podium, it was Simon Jost who secured the top step of the podium, with Filippo Zonta placing second and Davide De Bortoli second.

Just two rounds remain of the EMX Open Championship as the series heads to Kegums with De Bortoli leading the championship by four points over Dercourt, with Simon Croci third on 97 points.

Simon Jost: “I wasn’t expecting this result but anyway I’m feeling really good about it. I felt good the whole day. In time practice, I was fourth and in race one I had a little crash, I wasn’t able to finish where I wanted because I was only fifth. In race two, I was really struggling with my knee that is still not 100% and especially at the end of the race was hard to ride in this condition”.

Filippo Zonta: “Today I struggled a bit to find a good rhythm with my bike. In race one, I started really well with the holeshot but while I was second another rider hit me and I crashed. Anyway, I managed to come back to fourth position. In race two, I did another great start, took the holsehot, but anyway I did some mistakes and two riders passed me; despite that I was able to be third at the end of the race. Overall I’m happy because I did just two races and I’ve been both times on the podium”.

Davide De Bortoli: “I’m upset about the mistake I did in race two because I lost so many points in the championship. Today I was feeling really confident with the bike and also the speed was good so I’m happy also because I still have the red plate that I want to keep as long as I can. Latvia will not be that easy for me because is a sand track but anyway I’ll try to do my best, be there and fight for the win”.

In the first heat of the EMX2t Presented by FMF Racing it was Fantic Factory Team Maddii’s Federico Tuani who got a great start though immediately crashed which allowed the defending champion, Brad Anderson of Verde Substance KTM to take the lead.

Anderson was the rider in front, as Maximilian Spies of Fantic Factory Team Maddii got around Jonas Nedved for second, while Tuani was fighting back from the back.

Spies then caught up with Anderson and was looking faster than the leader. The German made several attempts to pass the Brit, though Anderson was quick to shut the door. The Verde Substance KTM rider did a good job to defend the lead for eight laps, until Spies was able to get the drive and pass for the lead.

Spies then opened a gap to Anderson, as Tuani was making great progress through the field to get into fifth.

By the end of the race Anderson was looking like he got second wind as he picked up the pace, but a mistake with a few laps to go put him out of contention for the race win as Spies crossed the finish line to take his first race win. Anderson was second and Nedved third with Tuani making a recovery up to fourth.

The second race saw Nedved out in front into the first corner, though Spies was quick to jump into first place. Anderson then took third from Putnam, as Tuani moved into fourth place.

Anderson then made a swift move into second place, as Tuani made the most of this opportunity himself, to catch Nedved off-guard and get himself into third.

Tuani then set his sights on Anderson, passing the Brit on lap three. As he then looked for an opportunity to close in on his teammate for the win.

Spies led the way until the end of the race, edging out lap by lap, but towards the later stages of the race Tuani was able to get the gap down to 2.238 seconds as Spies won, Tuani was second and Anderson third.

The podium saw Spies take his first EMX victory, with Anderson finishing second overall and Tuani third. This is exactly how the championship standings look right now, with Spies leading on 50 points, with Anderson second with 41 and Tuani with 40.

Maximilian Spies: “Finally I feel confident again after the injury I had in the last race of 2020 season in Trentino and now finally I feel confident and fast again. In race one I had a nice fight with Anderson, he’s really experienced so fighting with him was hard but in the end, I was able to pass him, get my speed and go for the win. Race two was easier and I was able to win without too much pressure. Now I’ll focus only on the EMX2T Presented by FMF racing Championship. I’m really looking forward to racing in Lommel and I hope to win again also there”.

Brad Anderson: “It has been a really difficult weekend, I struggled with the track for all day, luckily we’ll be in Lommel next week and I’m really looking forward to go there and fight in the sand with those guys. I want to thank all my sponsors and Verde Substance KTM for the support”.

Federico Tuani: “Overall it was a good day for me because I’m on the podium. In the first race I got the holeshot but then I had a big crash, and it was not easy to re-group because I was last and in the end, I was able to finish fourth. In race two I was feeling more confident and after a good race I was able to finish second. I’m happy to go to Lommel next week because I really love the track and I hope to fight soon with the fastest guys. I want to thank my family, my sponsors, and my team for helping me to make it possible”.

The Dutch rule in Oss as Elzinga and De Waal win in EMX

OSS (The Netherlands) 17 July 2021 – Saturday’s race action in Oss is done and dusted with Dutch riders Rick Elzinga from TBS Conversions KTM Racing Team and Micha-Boy De Waal of No Fear/Jumbo BT Racing Team victorious in the EMX250 and EMX Open categories.

Both riders were met by an eager Dutch crowd who urged them on from start to finish as they craved their way through the sand on their way to victory.

In the opening EMX250 race it was SM Action Racing Team YUASA Battery’s Kevin Horgmo who was the early race leader before crashing, which allowed Fantic Factory Team Maddii's Nicholas Lapucci, Jorgen-Mathias Talviku of No Fear/Jumbo BT Racing Team, Yago Martinez from Team VRT Nordpesca Holland, Elzinga and Dave Kooiker of Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing through, among others, as the Norwegian dropped to 8th.

Talviku and Elzinga then had a close battle for second, as the Dutchman went through on the Estonian and then the Husqvarna rider came under more pressure this time from Martinez who was also able to pass him. Talviku later crashed in the race a couple of times to finish the race ninth.

Everts was having a good ride as he made his way into the top five, though after an unlucky crash dropped down the order but was eventually to pick himself back up and finish the race inside the top five.

On lap 7 Elzinga was able to get around Lapucci for the lead as Kooiker lost quite a few positions and dropped down to sixth, allowing the likes of Horgmo, Martinez, Hutten Metaal Yamaha Racing’s Andrea Bonacorsi and Liam Everts of KTM Liamski through.

While it looked like Elzinga was on track to take a race win, Lapucci caught him out on the final lap to take back first position and go on to win the race ahead of the Dutchman, with Horgmo finishing third.

In race two, it was Lapucci who took the holeshot as Talviku quickly took the lead away from the Italian. The Estonian then crashed out of first place, with Lapucci forced off track due to the incident, and as a result lost valuable positions as he re-joined in 7th.

Team VRT Nordpesca Holland’s Davide Braceras then assumed first place, as Everts sensed the perfect opportunity to go after his first EMX250 race win. By lap three Everts was the new race leader, as Elzinga and Lapucci made their way back up to the leaders.

Elzinga then passed Lapucci, Bonacorsi and Braceras in one lap as Everts extended his lead to 4 seconds over Kooiker and Elzinga. Elzinga then got himself into second, as Lapucci worked his way up to third and then it was game on as Elzinga and Lapucci battled it out.

In the final laps of the race the pair caught onto the back of Everts who started to make mistakes under pressure and on the final lap, Elzinga was able to take the lead, as Everts successfully defended second place from Lapucci.

Elzinga was the race winner, with Everts second and Lapucci third. The same three riders took to the podium, with Elzinga taking the victory on home soil, with Lapucci second overall and Everts making his first EMX250 podium appearance in third.

Lapucci now leads the championship with a 17-point advantage over Horgmo, as Bonacorsi sits third.

Rick Elzinga: “To win at your home round is amazing and with the home crowd finally back at the races. I was sick for a long time so 25-minute race was not an easy thing to do and then my starts I was around tenth or fifteenth, so coming back from the mid-pack was really hard, I’m just really happy about the win”

“Lommel will be the team's home GP, so I hope to get another podium. I train there a lot, I am familiar with the track, and I think I can do some good things there”.

Nicholas Lapucci: “In the end it was not a bad day. A part of me is happy but also a part of me is a little bit upset but this is part of the races. The second race I had a problem when Talviku crashed and I went off the track, so I needed to work a lot to come back and take second overall. The important thing is to save the points position and go to Lommel pumped to maybe take the overall in the sand”.

“We work pretty hard in the sand, and I have enjoyed riding and today I showed good things and I will take away the positives. I got the race win in race one and showed good speed in race two, I did everything I could to try to take the guys in front, but they were fast too, and this is a part of racing”.

Liam Everts: “In the first race it was quite tough for me as I had a little crash, I was going too fast and made another mistake going in the uphill but still managed to get fifth. In the second race I got a good start and I was fourth, I almost had a crash myself but then I saw Nicholas and Kevin off, so I took advantage of this and made the most of it to get around leader and then go one more lap, and leave them behind. Then two laps from the end I made a little mistake which I think cost me the win, it was quite close in the end which is a shame but nonetheless I am very happy”.

“Home GP next where I grew up and learned to ride. I’m really looking forward to that, but this is already one goal achieved this year, the podium and to have the fans back is great. I saw and heard many fans cheering. I’m really looking forward to Lommel”.

As the gate dropped for the first EMX Open race, it was De Waal who took the lead from the get-go, as Nicholas Dercourt of Honda ST Motoblouz followed behind.

Former MXGP rider, Ken De Dycker got a good start and was inside the top five, before getting himself into second behind De Waal. The race leader, De Waal, then continued to stretch out his lead lap-by-lap, setting consistent lap times throughout the entire race.

Dercourt then pushed De Dycker to third, as De Waal extended his lead to 9.484 seconds and remained the fastest rider on track by almost 2 seconds compared to the riders behind him.

Davide De Bortoli was fighting his way through the field as he got around Joel Van Mechelen for fourth place. In the end De Waal was the race winner with Dercourt second and De Dycker finishing third.

In race two it was once again De Waal who took the holeshot after the race was re-started due to a false start. De Waal led the way with De Bortoli, Dercourt, Simeo Ubach of 137 KTM Motorsport and Simone Croci rounding out the top five on the opening lap.

De Dycker was down in 10th and had to work hard to make his way through the field, but eventually fell down to 12th where he finished the second heat.

Much like the first race, De Waal led from start to finish, while De Bortoli worked hard to keep Dercourt behind him, as the pair finished the race second and third. In the end it was De Waal who was the overall round winner in front of his home crowd, securing his team their first overall win, as Dercourt placed second overall and De Bortoli was third on the podium.

De Court now takes the championship lead, with De Bortoli four points behind him in second and De Waal sitting in third.

Micha-Boy De Waal: “Today was really good. My goal was to find a way to stay on the bike and today I managed to do that. I liked the track, it’s sand of course and I managed to take two race wins and two holeshots, so it was a good day definitely. For me it’s the first time I win two races and the overall and at the home round so it’s really special, for the team as well as it’s their first win also, but we are far away from the lead so we need to think of some way to get close”

Nicholas Dercourt: “I’m super happy with my weekend. I did not think it would unfold like that. It was tough and technical, especially since I was not familiar with the track. But I had a lot of fun with the team. We are building the foundations and we are trying to evolve little by little and not miss any steps. So, it is really great. I am happy to have had two good races and get the red plate. Thank you to everyone, sponsors and my team, Joss and Seb”.

Davide De Bortoli: “For me it’s a surprise to be on the podium today because this type of track is not my favourite. I don’t feel so confident in the sand but today I felt good to finish in third position and now the championship is interesting. I am happy to be second in the championship and I hope to do better in Loket on a track terrain that is my favourite”.

MXGP is off to Oss!

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 14 July 2021 – The FIM Motocross World Championship returns to the Netherlands this weekend for this year’s Dutch Grand Prix in Oss!

Over the years venues such as Lierop, Assen and Valkenswaard have all hosted the Dutch Motocross Grand Prix, though this season the MXGP of the Netherlands will take place somewhere different as it will celebrate the return of a former World Championship venue of the 80’s, that is Oss.

The Dutch track, located in the south of the country and less than 50km from Eindhoven, first opened its doors in 1980 and was then better known as ‘Witte Ruysheuve’. Five years later, in 1985 the track presented the Motocross World Championship Grand Prix, which saw home rider and former 125cc World Champion, Dave Strijbos victorious.

The club then organised another two GP’s in Oss in 1989 and 1998 which were dominated by American Mike Healey and Italian Alessio Chiodi. Now 23 years later Oss will make a comeback to the FIM Motocross World Championship to host what is bound to be an exciting race weekend!

Alongside the usual MXGP and MX2 races, the MXGP of the Netherlands will also see rounds of the EMX250 and EMX Open Championships. In the European 250 category Fantic Factory Team Maddii rider Nicholas Lapucci leads the championship over SM Action Racing Team’s Kevin Horgmo and Cornelius Toendel from Riley Racing Yamaha. Meanwhile in EMX Open, after an incredible performance in Maggiora two weeks ago, Filippo Zonta leads over Nicholas Dercourt and Davide De Bortoli. With both championships tight on points, it will be interesting to see who will come out on top this weekend.

As we enter the first sand race of the season, there’s no doubt that all eyes will be on Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings. As many of us know, Herlings is very strong in the sand and has won the Dutch Grand Prix a total of 14 times since 2010, including 10 wins in MX2 and 4 in the MXGP category.

Coming off the back of a GP victory in Maggiora two weeks ago, Herlings will enter his home round with a nice confident boost after three GP’s on a hardpack base, he will be back on a terrain he prefers a lot more and has been dominant on in the past, so a win for the Bullet is highly likely.

A rider who could challenge him for the win is Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff. For Coldenhoff the races in Oss will be a true home GP as the Dutchman grew up in the area. With the confidence of a podium finish in Italy, where he was tied on points with Herlings for the GP win, as well as the support of the home crowd, Coldenhoff will be strong and a real threat.

Meanwhile Team HRC’s Tim Gajser will be looking to claw back as many championship points as he can with a solid weekend. In Maggiora Gajser failed to place on the podium, though his chances of a podium this weekend are pretty high. Last year in Valkenswaard the Slovenian put on an incredible performance to go 1-2 for second overall. He also won twice in Lommel during the Belgian triple-header so there’s no question that Gajser can ride in the sand and will be one to look out for.

There’s also Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli who has been in incredible shape lately. After failing to score points in the second race in Orlyonok, Cairoli came back fighting in Matterley Basin to take his first GP win of the season and the followed that up with another strong performance in Maggiora going 3-3 to tie on points with Herlings and Coldenhoff. Cairoli has always been a good sand rider having won the Dutch and Belgian GP’s more than a handful times, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him on the top step once again.

Of course, there’s also Romain Febvre of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team who managed his first race win in Maggiora, though the second heat was much tougher and cost the Frenchman a podium and championship points. Despite that he is still third, just two points ahead of Cairoli, so of course he will be keen to pick up as many points as he can to keep his spot.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Seewer and Ben Watson will also be looking for more this time around, with both riders getting top 10 results in Maggiora. The pair are also known to be good in the sand so it could be another GP that we see all three factory Yamaha riders inside the top 10 again.

Last season, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing's Arminas Jasikonis finished third overall in Valkenswaard during the Dutch Grand Prix after two solid third place finishes. This season, Jasikonis is yet to pick up points after making his return from injury, but with the first sand race of the year taking place this weekend, we could see the Lithuanian climb up the order as he gets another race under his belt and becomes more confident.

Local riders Calvin Vlaanderen of Gebben Van Venrooy Racing and Standing Construct GasGas Factory Racing’s Brian Bogers will be keen to perform well during their home GP and so will wildcard riders Lars van Berkel, Rene De Jong and Sven Van der Mierden.

In MX2, F&H Kawasaki Racing’s Roan Van De Moosdijk is bound to be one of the main protagonists for the podium in Oss. After coming close to a top three overall finish in Orlyonok and Matterley Basin, Van De Moosdijk will be pushing for his first podium of the 2021 season and racing at home will for sure give him some sort of advantage. His teammates Mathys Boisrame and Mikkel Haarup cannot be ruled out either, with Boisrame showing huge improvements in the sand last season and so far this year he has been consistently fighting at the top end of the field.

Another one of the biggest threats for the win will be the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MX2 squad. All three riders, Jago Geerts, Maxime Renaux and Thibault Benistant have what it takes to lead races. Belgian born Geerts of course has the biggest advantage being a very strong sand rider, but Renaux can perform on the soft stuff too, as he proved it in Valkenswaard last season where he finished second on the podium. And of course, Benistant will be full of confidence after his race one victory in Maggiora. So, all three riders could put on a show this weekend.

One of the biggest questions coming into the Dutch Grand Prix was whether or not we will see Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tom Vialle make his return. Unfortunately, Vialle will sit out the races in Oss after two difficult GP's due to a broken hand. The broken bone in his hand is almost healed but anymore stress could be a setback for the defending World Champion, therefore the Frenchman made the decisions to not take part in this weekends races. At the moment Vialle is down in 11th in the championship standings, 63 points down on the leader Mattia Guadagnini.

For Guadagnini the upcoming races will be a real test to see if the Italian can perform just as well on sand as he had in the hard pack races so far this season, as well as to see whether having the red plate add any extra pressure or whether the rookie will be able to keep it together and put in another two solid races and continue his podium success.

Of course, Honda 114 Motorsport’s Ruben Fernandez will also want to get in on the action and stay within the top three in the championship. Fernandez has shown his fierce side these past few races, getting involved in some strong battles for top positions in every race that he has lined-up for. The races in Oss will be another opportunity for the Spaniard to solidify himself as a title contender this season after some very good races so far.

Another rider who will be looking to put on his best performance will be Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Kay De Wolf, who will enter his home Grand Prix in the MX2 World Championship class for the first time. Two weeks ago, both De Wolf and Beaton had some good races, both finishing inside the top 10 and battling within the top 5 together at one stage too. For the De Wolf this will be an opportunity to shine and show what can be expected later in the season as he gets more confident.

Osterhagen and Zonta dominate the EMX categories in Maggiora!

MAGGIORA (Italy) 3 July 2021 – The first day of racing here in Maggiora has concluded with the opening round of the EMX Open, as well as round two of the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing championship.

Haakon Osterhagen of Fantic Factory Racing Team Maddii continued his winning streak to secure his first 1-1 in the EMX championship, meanwhile Filippo Zonta celebrated a victory on home soil in the same fashion, winning both races.

In the EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing category it was Fantic Factory Racing Team Maddii’s Haakon Osterhagen who continued his winning streak, adding two more race wins to his scorecard as he dominated the class once again. Joining him on the podium was Italian Valerio Lata of MRT Racing Team KTM and Kay Karssemakers of Husqvarna SKS Racing.

In the opening race it was ASA United GasGas rider Bobby Bruce who jumped into an early, though his time in first place was cut short as he made a mistake and fell down to last. Scott Smulders of No Fear/Jumbo BT Racing was the race leader for a lap, though by lap 3 Osterhagen was back in the driving seat as he led the way.

Smulders then lost out to Sacha Coenen of 9MM Energy Drink BUD Racing and Lata, with the pair going through into second and third, and then it was game on as Coenen and Lata were part of an intense battle for second place. The fight carried on for four laps, with Lata keeping Coenen extremely close, before making a pass stick on lap 9.

Towards the latter stages of the race Osterhagen had extended his lead to 10.332 seconds, as Lata and Coenen remained 2nd and 3rd, until Coenen crashed out with just 3 laps to go. Osterhagen was the race winner, with Lata second and Karssemakers third after making his way through the field from 7th place.

In the second race, it was Lata who grabbed the holeshot, followed by Osterhagen, Sacha Coenen and Bruce. Osterhagen was looking impatient as he worked hard to find a way past Lata, which he did very quickly as he led the race from lap 2.

Coenen was next to go through on Lata, with the young Belgian pushing hard to keep Osterhagen in his sights, though much like in race 1, the Kawasaki rider crashed once more on lap 7, though was able to recover and finish the race in P8.

The remainder of the second race saw Osterhagen lead Lata, Bruce, Andrea Rossi and Karssemakers who worked his way up to 5th.

Osterhagen made it a perfect day to go 1-1, while Lata placed P2 and Bruce was able to have a good race to take a solid P3.

In terms of the podium, it was Osterhagen who took to the top step of the podium, with Lata finishing second and Karssemakers getting shot at the podium in third. Fantic’s Osterhagen continues to lead the championship with 95 points, while Lata and Karssemakers move to second and third in the standings.

Haakon Osterhagen: “Yes it’s been super racing. I feel really satisfied about my riding and also about the bike, I’m super happy to get the 1-1 and make it happen. In the future this is our goal, and we’ll always work to get those results”.

Valerio Lata: “Yes it was a good day and nice to finish on the podium. I really enjoyed riding here because the track was also good. Thank you to my team and those who support me”

Kay Karssemakers: “First of all I’m happy about the result, the first race was good for me but in the second I had a small crash, and I wasn’t able to reach the results I wanted because I had to fight for 5th place. Finally, I’m super happy because is my first podium and I want to thank my team for the great support the gave me this weekend”.

In the EMX Open class it was Filippo Zonta who started the championship with a perfect score of 1-1 to take the round victory on home soil. Joining him on the podium was Frenchman Nicolas Dercourt of Honda SR Motoblouz who placed second with Davide De Bortoli third overall.

In race one, it was Dercourt who grabbed an early lead and was followed by De Bortoli, Zonta and Adrien Escoffier of Honda SR Motoblouz. De Bortoli was keen to get the win and pushed Dercourt from early on in the race, as less than a second separated the two.

De Bortoli moved into the lead on lap 3, before making a mistake on lap 5, which pushed him down to 7th. With Dercourt back in the driving seat, Zonta was the next rider to catch up to the race leader as he put on a charge.

By lap 7, Zonta was the new race leader, while Micha-Boy De Waal of No\Fear Jumbo BT Racing Team and Escoffier had a big one, with Escoffier not finishing the race, whereas De Waal was able to push on and finish the race in 17th position.

As Zonta and Dercourt pulled a safe gap to the rest of the field, a nice battle was forming between Alessandro D’Angelo and Simone Croci with the pair fighting hard for third. Eventually Croci was able to find a way through as he upped his pace and even set the fastest lap of the race.

In the end Zonta was the race winner, with Dercourt second and Croci third.

In race two it was Jeff Oxelmark of JWR Honda Racing who was the early race leader, with Escoffier and Matej Jaros just behind. Escoffier was quick to start applying the pressure and by the second lap was leading the race.

Race 1 winner, Zonta was further down the field in 6th, though by the third lap was already up in the top three.

Escoffier led until lap 5, as Dercourt took the lead away. Zonta was also not looking to waste any time as he squeezed past the number #137 of Escoffier, on the same lap. Then it was a three-rider race as Dercourt, Zonta and Escoffier kept things close.

By lap 8 Zonta was out in front once again, as De Bortoli closed in on Dercourt. The pair fought for a few more laps before the Italian was able to pass the Frenchman and even close back in on the race leader.

In the end it was Zonta with the race win, De Bortoli second and Dercourt third. The podium was quite similar with Zonta occupying the top step of the podium and taking the red plate, while Dercourt placed second and De Bortoli third.

Filippo Zonta: “It feels great to be there, the first race was perfect while in the second one I started really good as well but in the first corner I almost crashed. Anyway, I managed to stay on the bike and get the concentration back to the race, I managed to gain back the lead and win also this race. I’m super happy because last period has been really hard for me, I didn’t give up and I continued to work really hard day by day and after such a big effort everybody can see the results”

Nicolas Dercourt: “The first race I had a really good start while in the second I wasn’t able to start as I wanted, it took me a couple of laps to be back. At the end I’m quite happy about the result because I decided to come to the race only Wednesday”.

Davide De Bortoli: “Today it was a solid day for me, I’m super happy to be on the podium because this means that my speed is really good; now I hope to be better in the next races and step on the top of the podium”.
