Swiss Duo Tonus and Seewer win first at the MXGP of Russia

(ORLYONOK) Russia, 10 June 2017 - After a 5 year hiatus, MXGP and the FIM Motocross World Championship returned to Russia today. In the qualifying day it was the pair of Swiss riders, Wilvo Yamaha MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus and Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer, who claim the pole position for Sunday.

In addition to MXGP and MX2 the MXGP of Russia hosted the European Motocross Championship classes of EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX250. In the 300cc 2-Stroke class Brad Anderson took the race win in convincing fashion, holding off the reigning champ Mike Kras, who eventually finished 3rd behind Kenny Vandueren. For the EMX250 class Mathys Boisrame out performed Simone Furlotti under pressure who was followed by the American, BUD Racing’s Marshal Weltin.

Wilvo Yamaha MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus put himself in great position for Sunday by winning today’s qualifying race. The #4 came into the first corner in the 4th spot and worked his way forward by making an early pass on 3rd and capitalizing on the mistakes of others. Tonus in the press conference said: ““I had fun in practice, I felt pretty good on the track, it is similar conditions here to what we can find in Switzerland or near where I live, it is definitely something I fell comfortable on. After winning the qualifying race I’m expecting a good Sunday.”

One of the riders fighting for the lead early on was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin. Paulin was bar to bar with his Rockstar Husqvarna Factory Racing teammate Max Nagl as they battled for the lead. Eventually Paulin made it past with an inside line into a corner. Nagl remained second for several laps before falling just in front of Tonus. Paulin’s lead lasted for 6 laps until he slid out which allowed the quick approaching Tonus an easy way by.

Just outside of the battle for the lead was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. Cairoli had a third place start but he was quickly passed by Tonus. The veteran wisely latched on to the back of Tonus and by the finish worked his way back into the third position. For Sunday Cairoli will look to grab the Holeshot that he has become accustom from the past few races.

Last GP’s winner, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle followed up his French victory with another good race today, the Belgian was consistent on lap after another resulting in fourth. Desalle looks comfortable and motivated to continue to challenge for race wins and he is definitely one to watch closely tomorrow.

Two weeks after his home GP Monster Energy Yamaha’s Romain Febvre is riding with a renewed energy. The 2015 Champion has struggled lately but today was another step in the right direction. Febvre moved from 7th to take 5th on what is a harder surface. The experience of similar soiled French circuits may help the #461 to reach the podium here in Orlyonok.

Russian motocross hero, Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev, returned from injury to race what is his home GP today and only 3 weeks after surgery showed impressive speed. Starting in the top five the #777 fell  during the later stages dropping him to 11th across the finish. Bobryshev in the qualifying press conference said: ““The race and this Russian event I wouldn’t miss it even if I couldn’t race I would come here anyway because it is a special event in Russia. I’m really happy to be here with all the crowd and support. I think tomorrow will be a really good day.”

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Arnaud Tonus (SUI, Yamaha), 24:05.209; 2. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Husqvarna), +0:04.444; 3. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:12.765; 4. Clement Desalle (BEL, Kawasaki), +0:14.521; 5. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:19.755; 6. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), +0:27.693; 7. Arminas Jasikonis (LTU, Suzuki), +0:34.183; 8. Max Anstie (GBR, Husqvarna), +0:44.208; 9. Alessandro Lupino (ITA, Honda), +0:47.145; 10. Jose Butron (ESP, KTM), +0:54.633.

Though it is the MXGP of Russia the Swiss have been impressive, and in MX2 it was no different as Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer launched of the starting grid ahead of the competition. Running in second the first 3 laps of the race Seewer looked comfortable and smooth on the new circuit. After a bike issue took the once leader Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Pauls Jonass out of contention on lap 4 Seewer inherited the position and kept it through to the finish. Jonass on the other hand would pull into pit lane resolve the issue and rejoin the race in 23rd but work his back to 17th. Seewer later in the press conference said, “I feel pretty good here in Russia, we didn’t know what to expect but we have a good hotel and good food so I’m happy with that. The track is cool pretty natural. I feel good I had good start and Pauls had some technical problem and I took over the lead. It is finally a good Saturday.”

After a successful home GP in France, Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team’s Benoit Paturel matched his previous result in qualifying today, scoring 2nd. Paturel had a first race win and Holeshot in France and his 2nd gate pick sets him up well to do the same tomorrow.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington has shown he is winning speed but has only been able to put the #64 on the top step of the podium once this season. Traditionally when Covington does well it’s on the heels of a strong qualifying race. If today’s 3rd place qualifying finish is any indication of tomorrow you can expect the American to be fighting for the podium if not the win.

Another rider who is capable of producing a win is LRT KTM’s Julien Lieber. The lone privateer in the top 5 of today’s qualifying showed some impressive speed. Lieber ran in the 2nd position for 8 laps before an issue resulted in him dropping to 4th. Lieber has yet to place higher than 3rd overall this season and will strive to do so at the inaugural MXGP of Russia in Orlyonok.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen rounded out the top five in MX2 qualifying today with 5th. Olsen started in 8th but battled his way forward swapping between 5th and 6th position with HSF Logistics’ Brian Bogers on his way to the finish.

Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Vsevolod Brylyakov sat out today’s racing at his home GP with injury and the press conference said: “It is great to be here and we don’t have a lot of Russian GPs, it is really nice that we have one here in this special place next to the Black Sea. Me and my team made the decision to just stay focused on my recovery. I actually built myself up in this region and I grew up on these tracks. This is a happy moment for me to be at the races and watch them at least.”

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), 24:11.292; 2. Benoit Paturel (FRA, Yamaha), +0:01.846; 3. Thomas Covington (USA, Husqvarna), +0:10.003; 4. Julien Lieber (BEL, KTM), +0:19.766; 5. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, Husqvarna), +0:23.689; 6. Brian Bogers (NED, KTM), +0:27.026; 7. Hunter Lawrence (AUS, Suzuki), +0:27.629; 8. David Herbreteau (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:38.581; 9. Alvin Östlund (SWE, Yamaha), +0:39.577; 10. Petar Petrov (BUL, Kawasaki), +0:40.902

Unforgettable Opening Ceremony kicks off the MXGP of Russia

(ORLYONOK) Russia, 9 June 2017 - The largest children’s center in the world, Orlyonok, nicknamed the town of childhood, held the MXGP of Russia welcome event including an autograph signing and opening ceremony today. The extraordinary venue includes a theatre, gym, planetarium, and more hosting almost 6,000 children, around 100 of which are from abroad.

The event started with a signing session held at the 1986 monument of peace where the children of Orlyonok once wrote their peace wishes on a scroll which they sent into the Black Sea, in 1992 one such scroll made it all the way to the shores of Japan. The children of the Orlyonok Summer Camp started the event by showing Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Jorge Prado, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing’s Team Clement Desalle, Peter Petrov and Morgan Lesiardo, Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Vsevolod Brylyakov and Darian Sanayei, Rockstar Energy Husqvqrna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl, Max Anstie and Thomas Covington, Team Suzuki World’s Arminas Jasikonis, Jeremy Seewer, Hunter Lawrence and Bas Vaessen, Wilvo Yamaha MXGP’s Arnaud Tonus, HRC MX2’s Michele Cervellin, along with Honda Red Moto Assomotor’s Alessandro Lupino and Alberto Forato how to create Origami where the riders wrote their own peace wishes on. The Origami, a symbol of peace, was then placed on the stones around the monument and afterwards the riders autographed posters for over 200 children.

Directly after, an opening ceremony took place where Youthstream President Giuseppe Luongo, FIM Europe President Wolfgang Srb and FIM CMS/Director Tony Skillington emphasized their appreciation for the work that the organizers, government, and Russian motorcycle federation have put forth to make this event a reality and local representatives Vladimir Permyakov, Deputy Minister of Ministry of Sport of Krasnodar region, Alexander Dzheus, President of the Motorcycle Federation of Russia, and Anton Antonov, Russian Ministry of Sport Deputy all expressed their excitement and gratitude for hosting such an event and wished their best to the riders for this race weekend. All of which was in front of a crowd of nearly 6,000 children. Many of the children then performed to provide a full opening ceremony with traditional dancing, music, and more creating an unforgettable experience!

With such an amazing start to the MXGP of Russia the anticipation is building for the weekend’s racing in what is bound to be just as epic GP.

Boby and Seva head to Russia

For Russian riders Evgeny Bobryshev and Seva Brylyakov it’s been a hard road to their home Grand Prix of Russia, set for the Orlyonok circuit, this coming weekend.

Both local riders have suffered injury leading in the weekend. Brylyakov, who has tried to ride in Latvia and Germany, just couldn’t keep the pace and sat out the Grand Prix of France and SDR Kawasaki team manager, Steve Dixon is hoping his charge will be able to race this weekend.

“He is having treatment in Russia for his nerve, so we have the bike there and make a decision Friday” Dixon said.

Brylyakov is a frustrated man as he looks at trying to return to the MX2 class and build on his series points.

Since Valkenswaard we had never stopped working.” Brylyakov said. “I did all the work I could have done but at the beginning the muscles were completely weak and paralysed. We got a lot of feeling back, a lot of power back. In Latvia, it was a flat track and the pain was not so bad but as soon as we were on the rough track I immediately felt that my shoulder was not protected enough. I still had two muscles in my shoulder paralysed and I decided not to race (in Latvia). I was effectively riding with one hand, as some nerves and muscles in my shoulder are still paralysed. We have done a lot of checks and I have spent a lot of time with the doctors.”

Bobryshev was forced to sit out the French GP, after his crash in Germany resulted in a broken collarbone. After undergoing an operation to plate his collarbone, Bobryshev has been able to do light training exercises and physiotherapy. This has allowed him to make a return to racing in front of his home crowd this weekend.

“I am really pleased to be able to come back this weekend to ride at my home GP in Russia. It has only been three weeks since my accident but I am feeling OK. I haven't had much time on the bike as I have been letting the collarbone heal, so although I am coming back this weekend, I know I may not be 100% back at my usual pace. I want to make up points for the championship and I am excited to see the Russian fans. I look forward to it!”

As we all know, Russian are tough men, and both will do everything possible to put in a strong performance. Both the SDR Kawasaki team, and the HRC Factory team have been ravaged with injuries, as both Tommy Searle and Tim Gajser wait in the side-lines, both hoping to be back for the FIAT Professional FULLBACK MXGP of Lombardia, in Italy on a couple of weeks’ time.

Road 2 Recovery for Steven Lenoir

Steven Lenoir died on Monday, June 5, after crashing at a French Internatianal motocross race at Cassel in his native France. He was 25.

Steven Lenoir first shot to fame at an international level after claiming the EMX250 title in 2010. The series, which acts as a proving ground for rising stars, was hotly contested that year, as Lenoir duked it out with stars like Valentin Guillod and Julien Lieber. ‘685’ won five motos across the season and eventually established an incredible advantage of fifty points.

It was after that that Lenoir first arrived in Britain, as he landed a deal with the Samsung Yamaha team in 2012. Four moto podiums were acquired in his maiden season in the Maxxis British Championship and then in the years that followed he emerged as a title contender. Lenoir claimed the prestigious MX2 title in the Maxxis British Championship in 2015, following an incredible season with the Dyer and Butler KTM team that included seventeen finishes inside of the top three. A championship in the Michelin MX Nationals was also captured that season.

An MX1 title was the next achievement that Lenoir was closing in on, as he was just four points out of the series lead in the Maxxis British Championship. Consistency was once again his greatest strength through the first four rounds of this year; he did not drop out of the top five at all.

Steven Lenoir won the hearts of everyone within the paddock with his smooth style, easy-going nature and fierce work ethic both in the United Kingdom and MXGP, and achieved what most can only dream of in his illustrious career. A substantial hole will be left in the paddock from this day on.

Now we need your help to support Steven’s family in their time of need as they come to terms with this dreadful tragedy.

You can help support Steven Lenoir’s family by donating to his cause by following Road2Recovery Foundation HERE. All donations are in USD. If you are unable to financial support his cause, please help by sharing on your social sites. You can also help by leaving a positive message on Road2Recovery page.

MXGP heads to Russia

(ORLYONOK) Russia, 7 June 2017 - After a weekend off the MXGP field is ready to race once again. The 10th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship will be held for the first time ever at the circuit of Orlyonok in Russia. Orlyonok did however prove itself as a worthy host after holding the 2016 FIM Junior World Motocross Championship.

The last MXGP visit to the country was in 2012. The venue is a 98 Mile drive from Sochi, Russia, host of the 2014 Winter Olympics with the track located on the eastern edge of the black see in a coastal setting.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass have momentum on their side after winning the last stop in France with Desalle claiming his first of win of season.

In addition to MXGP and MX2 the weekend will include European championship racing in the form of EMX300 Presented by FMF Racing and EMX250. Brad Anderson leads EMX 300 Presented by FMF Racing’s Championship after winning the opening round in Germany while Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Morgan Lesiardo leads EMX250 4 rounds into the series.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli is the current points leader, he won the last visit to Russia and with no previous MXGP race held in Orlyonok and the reigning champion Team HRC’s Tim Gajser out with injury the podium is wide open for new history to be made. The #222 will look to go 2 for 2 on Russian soil this weekend.

Frenchman and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin has made a habit of racing up front the past few races, after his win at the MXGP of Europe and podium in France he is hungry for more. The last visit to Russia provided Paulin with a 7th overall, a result he will want to better.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle is coming off the best racing performance of his season, winning the overall in France. Desalle will strive to keep the momentum after the weekend off. Finishing second overall at the 2012 MXGP of Russia a podium if not another win is well within the Belgian’s reach.

Fifth in points but tied with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings is Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek. Both riders raced the MXGP of Russia but in 2012 they were in the MX2 category. Herlings claimed the 2012 overall but Van Horebeek was not far behind with third overall.

Russian native and HRC rider Evgeny Bobryshev has confirmed he will race his home GP after his broken collar bone in Germany. The #777 is motivated to come back as he is 7th in the points and HRC’s only rider for the weekend as Tim Gajser was recently diagnosed with a fractured shoulder blade and an unknown return date.

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre had some of his best races at the previous GP in his home country of France. The 2015 Champion has been struggling this season but will use his improved french weekend as something build on.

MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 347 points; 2. Gautier Paulin (FRA, HUS), 297 p.; 3. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 289 p.; 4. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 261 p.; 5. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 261 p.; 6. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 253 p.; 7. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, HON), 214 p.; 8. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 209 p.; 9. Maximilian Nagl (GER, HUS), 200 p.; 10. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), 176 p.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass is continuing to perform at the level of a champion now half way through the 2017 season. Jonass took the overall in France 2 weeks ago and now has a 42 point lead over the second in the championship.

Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer is the closest to Jonass and his main title competitor. 42 points behind Seewer’s performances are improving and in France he finished 3rd overall but most importantly he minimized the mistakes which have been his foe thus far. Seewer is on a mission and is certainly one to watch this GP.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen comes into Russia looking for the podium after missing it in France. The Danish rider has impressed in his rookie MX2 season and will most likely continue to do so in Russia. Olsen is sitting 3rd in the points but only 9 ahead of 4th.

LRT KTM’s Julien Lieber started the season strong with multiple podium finishes but lately he has struggled with mistakes. Now on his last year in the MX2 class Lieber is the only privateer in the top 5 of the points. The #33 is looking to impress the 450 teams and a strong Russian GP after some unfortunate rounds would do just that.

Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team’s Benoit Paturel is coming off his best performance of the season at his home GP in France. While most of the season has been filled with lackluster starts and battling through the pack, France saw a different Paturel, one who grabbed a career first FOX Holeshot and race win on the way to second overall. Paturel is turning his season around and will hope to continue moving in the winning direction for Russia.

MX2’s “Beast from the East”, Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Vsevolod Brylakov will unfortunately sit out this weekends racing due to injury but will be in attendance of what is his home GP.

MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), 372 points; 2. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, SUZ), 330 p.; 3. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 291 p.; 4. Julien Lieber (BEL, KTM), 282 p.; 5.
