INTO THE FIRE!!!

Are we entering the greatest GP season in the history of the sport? It’s been said now for the last five or so years and the MXGP series just continues to produce special racing.

Competitive is a word that might describe the 2017 MXGP class. Amazingly 18 of the field have won Grand Prix’s in their career. While the MX2 class is very much a class of youth, and only one single rider, Thomas Covington, has won a GP in that class. There are going to be some happy teenagers in the MX2 class in 2017.

Dunlop commit to FIM MXGP World Championship with new Partnership contract

MONACO (Principality of Monaco) 13 February 2017 - Dunlop have announced an increased commitment to the FIM MXGP World Championship by signing a new three year partnership agreement to be an Official Tyre Supplier of the series.

MXGP not only highlights the intense competition between riders and motorcycle manufacturers, but it also provides a battle of the tyre manufacturers. The classes feature open tyre competition, encouraging manufacturers to develop winning tyres across the championship’s wide range of terrain.

Dunlop enter the new contract riding a crest of the wave, with the tyre brand being used by the winning rider in each of the last three MXGP events of 2016.

Xavier Fraipont, Managing Director, Dunlop Motorsport and Motorcycle stated: “MXGP allows us to prove our tyre performance and durability in this most demanding and gruelling World Championship. With a mixture of sand, mud and rocky terrain on the calendar we give our riders confidence to perform at the limit all season long”

Dunlop’s range of MXGP tyres, including the MX3S for soft to medium terrain, MX52 for harder ground and MX11 for soft and sandy conditions are commercially available from Dunlop Dealers. The demands of the championship have also allowed Dunlop to introduce new technologies such as Progressive Cornering Block Technology (PCBT) which provides tighter control in corners.

The increasing audiences and fan interaction were another reason for Dunlop committing to MXGP. “The MXGP promoters, Youthstream, are pioneers when it comes to fan engagement. With live streaming of each event, open paddock access for fans and a strong social media following, MXGP is really connecting with riders and spectators” added Fraipont.

David Luongo, Youthstream Director, added: “It is a pleasure to renew this partnership with a brand as prestigious as Dunlop. The MXGP World Championship takes place in all kind of tracks that are very demanding for the tyres, it is the best place to develop new technologies and products. On top of that Youthstream’s objective is to continue developing our media coverage with traditional broadcasters, our digital platform MXGP-TV.com and our various social media networks. Having all the MXGP, MX2, WMX and European Championships races broadcasted live through MXGP-TV.com is giving an impressive exposure to all our partners, teams and riders.”

The FIM MXGP World Championship begins in Qatar on 25 February.

MXGP & Dunlop Deal

An International Beginning

With around 10 days before we all head down to Doha, Qatar for the opening round of the FIM Motocross World Championships, riders, mechanics, team owners and managers, the media and a big crew from Youthstream will be packing their bags for what is expected to once again be a special event.

Travel is different for everyone. Riders like Antonio Cairoli or Tommy Searle seem to love the experience of other countries, and enjoying every moment of the experience, while some, like Jeffrey Herlings would prefer to be back home, in the comfort of their own bed.

“Last year I flew home on Sunday morning (after Qatar)” Herlings said. “I was home on Sunday at 1pm, so I could spend four days at home riding, while I can do my normal food, sleep in my normal bed and that’s best for me. The travelling is hard on your body. We do a lot of training and after two motos last year in Thailand, yes, I was tired, but it’s kind of normal. It shows I did what I had to do and that’s work hard.”

Adventure and the unknown though is something that most enjoy, and the higher temperature in Qatar and Indonesia will be welcomed by everyone coming from this cold winter in Europe.

The opening round at Losail circuit on the outskirts of Doha is the perfect start to the Grand Prix season. One of the best motorsport facilities in the world, combined with the night race, gives it a special atmosphere, and one everyone seems in good spirits.

We had the arrival of Ryan Villopoto in 2015, and the surprise victory by Tim Gajser last year, but this year with the likes of Jeffrey Herlings, Tim Gajser, Romain Febvre and Antonio Cairoli going head to head, we will see fireworks in the darkness of night of Qatar. Not to mention a very competitive MX2 class.

A week after Qatar we will return to Indonesia, a place we haven’t been to since 1997, when Alessio Chiodi won the 125cc Grand Prix at the Yogyakarta circuit, and Yves Demaria won the 250 GP at Bandung. This year it’s the small Island of Bangka that will give us a taste of Asian hospitality. An unknown circuit in Pangkal Pinang and a bit of a mystery for the GP paddock.

Of course Patagonia in Argentina follows. For those who have visited this circuit, it’s known as a special place. A brilliant circuit and breath-taking scenery. It’s pretty much all you need to make a motocross event perfect.

Closing down the overseas start to the 2017 season is Leon in Mexico, a place that has fond memories for young American Thomas Covington who won there in 2015. It was Jeffrey Herlings in MX2 and Tim Gajser in MXGP who won last year, and you can be sure both those riders will want to continue their love affair with Mexico this year.

Can’t wait to start another classic MXGP series.

Stefan Everts Blog

Suzuki World MXGP Team Manager Stefan Everts talks Winter Training, the new Factory RM-Z450WS, World Team Launch and preparation for this year’s FIM Motocross World Championships.

This winter was very different than last winter because we started working with a new bike. In October we received the new RM-Z450WS from Japan and we did four days of testing. This was necessary because in the Winter we couldn’t test anything due to the fact that we had to send the two test bikes to our suppliers in order to make exhausts, carbon tanks and carbon subframes; so at that time the bike was still a prototype and everything had to be done in a very secret way. Besides the arrival of the new bike, this Winter was also different than the year before because there were some internal changes at GRP; new mechanics and new riders, so a lot of new faces and people to work with.

So we had a brand new bike, for the first time in eight years actually. When something like this happens, you just have to make something special about it. In December I went to Japan and proposed to SMC how we would do the bike launch and they gave us the permission to go for it. We wanted to do the launch as early as possible, because once this was done, we could unveil the bike to the public and could test it everywhere we wanted to. This was important, because it’s difficult to do good tests if nobody is allowed to see the bike on normal public tracks. This new RMZ-450WS is a new beginning, a milestone for Suzuki; and for me it comes at the right moment, because I’m running the team now. Everything falls a bit more into place and everyone is very motivated to lift Suzuki to a higher level.

So last week, on Friday the 3rd of February, the big moment had finally come; the team and bike launch at our HQ in Lommel, Belgium. Although there are always points where one can improve, everything went really well, especially since it was the first time we’ve done something like this. For me it was also important to include the Suzuki dealers, so we invited a lot of them for the bike launch. But of course, we didn’t forget our fans either. That’s why we organised a contest on Facebook where they could win a pair of tickets to come to the event and that’s also why we decided to go for SMC’s idea to livestream the event on Facebook. It was nice that we could give all our fans the opportunity to follow the presentation, even if they could not be there with us in Lommel.

I’m looking forward to the start of the season in Qatar!
