MX2

Little wheels have been set in motion

ORLYONOK (Russia), 13 August 2016 - The future of motocross will be exposed this weekend at the fabulous track and venue here in Orlyonok, Russia, where the 2016 FIM Junior Motocross World Championship has just got underway with the practice sessions out on track now, as we speak.

Yesterday evening, thousands of kids came out to see their peers, friends and idols, and the rest of the world’s fastest dirtbike riders under the age of 17 years old, at the welcoming ceremony, which took place at the Russian Children Centre Orlyonok, the educational center well known for accommodating more than 3500 children from all regions of Russia.

The vibe at the ceremony was something special. Russian dancers set the event in motion while a series of great music tracks had the kids clapping in time. MXGP-TV Presenter, Lisa Leyland and Russian representative and translator, Vladimir Vitalin did the honors and got the event underway by welcoming some of the most important faces to the stage, Mr. Alexander Dzheus, President of the Motorcycle Federation of Russia, Mr. Anton Antonov, Russian Ministry of Sport representative, Mr. Dirk De Neve, FIM Representative, Mr. Eddie Herd, FIM Europe Motocross Commission President and Ms. Patricia Maskarova, Youthstream Representative who all remained true to the Russian tradition where official guests whet their appetites with a bit of bread and salt.

Following the introductions, fifteen nations were bought out and saluted one-by-one, which got everyone pumped up for this extraordinary weekend. In those teams are a few names that might sound familiar, such as Jago Geerts, the 2016 European EMX125 Champion, and Roan Van de Moosdijk, another top contender in the EMX125 series. Australian Caleb Grothues has also made his mark internationally and could be a threat to the 125cc crown as well.

In addition, both of the EMX85 and EMX65 champions are also here, Rene Hofer and Edvards Bidzans who will be lining up against an array of Russian talents who could come along and spoil the party.

One of the coolest things about winning a FIM Junior Motocross World title or the European Open 65cc Cup title is that the winner will also receive a Scott Voltage mountain bike courtesy of our sponsor Scott Sports. Scott Sports representative Diego Clement presented the bikes that the three fastest juniors will be taking home and also invited everyone to a bike race that will take place here at the circuit in Orlyonok today at 5:30pm at the finish line.

With that said, it’s now crunch time for these young athletes with the qualifying sessions set to take place later this afternoon. For LIVE updates from Orlyonok, Russia, follow us on www.mxgp.com, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and visit our Youtube channel: www.youtube.com/mxgptv for FREE video content.

In the meantime click HERE to watch the postcard from Orlyonok and HERE to enjoy the welcome message by our Presenter Lisa Leyland.

Assen - a special stop

There is no doubt, last year’s Grand Prix of the Netherlands, held at the Assen TT circuit was more than just a little special. Perfect weather, a huge crowd, great racing and an exciting circuit gave us just what we wanted.

In a sport that has created so much history, around so many beautiful old school, hard pack circuits, a little extra was added last year as one of the best MotoGP facilities in the world enjoyed a little off-road action.

I’ve been lucky enough in my 55 years to visit some pretty impressive motocross events, from Carlsbad and the USGP in the 1980’s, to AMA Supercross events in the 1970’s, 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. Facilities like Daytona, Indianapolis, Road America, Spa, Namur, Monza, and Le Man. Watched GP riders perform at Unadilla, Budds Creek, Hollister Hills, and Glen Helen, and visited 100’s of GP circuits in Europe and around the rest of the world.

Last year in Assen had something a little different, sure as Romain Febvre said old school is always better and I agree 100%. Maggiora, Trento, Kegums, Matterley Basin, Valkenswaard, or Lommel have something special for the real motocross fan, but what Assen brought to the table was another level.

It was well noticed that wealthy company CEO’s were at Assen. From bankers to boardroom executives, people who had money to spend and were looking for their next hobby. The whole place was just what you would want to show to a future sponsor or event organizer. Unlike some of the rough and tumble of our beloved old school circuits, this was something to be really proud of, if showing another side of the sport, to a non-motocross fan.

The sport took a turn for the better in Assen last year, and to Youthstream and the Assen promotional team, to Greg Atkins who put this circuit together in just a few days, it was time to celebrate. I seriously think we have found a special place for the sport for many years to come.

Money was made by the local promoters who needed to have around 10,000 spectators to break event, but probably had more than 20,000. The whole village of Assen was excited about the MXGP event and welcomed the series with open arms. The local council was excited and involved and the hotels, restaurants and bars also picked up some extra business.

Assen, we look forward to returning in two weeks’ time, and once again celebrate a new era in Grand Prix motocross.

The revival of Switzerland revives the fire that burns within Cairoli & Anstie

FRAUENFELD-GACHNANG (Switzerland), 07 August 2016 – The revival of the Swiss grand prix was completely off the hook as thousands upon thousands of fanatical MXGP fans packed into the grand stands that surrounded the track to witness the fifteenth round of the FIM Motocross World Championship where Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s number one tactician Antonio Cairoli made his return to the top step of the podium, while Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Anstie poured more life into his MX2 campaign with a pair of race wins for the victory in MX2.

Picking the right lines is all in the mind, and with no former knowledge of this track and venue, no videos to watch over and over, no hills that cater to a good engine with great gearing or horse power, it was all down to the riders to work out which lines were the fastest, and that made the MXGP of Switzerland presented by iXS the great equalizer.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli put in a breakout ride just when he needed it most, at least in race one, which was enough for his third grand prix win of the season. The second race didn’t go as smooth for the Italian legend and he was absolutely livid at the end of it, which is a good indication he still has a fire in his belly for winning races. In his post race interview he mentioned that he is going to use the three-week break to test both bikes, the 350cc and the 450cc, which is a sure sign he is on a mission to find the extra edge.

Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser’s is not afraid to let it all hang loose, but riding like that almost always comes at a price. Gajser learned all about the risk and reward on his way to THIRD overall today. In race one, the risk slammed him to the ground, bent his bars and destroyed his front brake. A truly gritty ride saw him charge from outside of the top twenty to ninth. In Race 2, the risk rewarded him with his fifteenth race win of the season, which was enough to land him on podium for the fourteenth time this year.

At the moment, with the incredible depth of talent in the MXGP class, no one is good enough to get on the podium while holding something back. Febvre knows better than anyone, and threw his heart on the table once again, as he always does, except this weekend the track demanded a lot of respect and anyone who pushed too hard paid the price. Febvre’s price was eighth place in Race 1, but he came back strong in race two with a second place for third overall.

If you thought Team HRC’s Gautier Paulin seemed out of character over the last couple of rounds, you’ll be pleased to know the real Gautier Paulin was back in the opening moto, with the assistance of a good start. A podium was on the cards for the Honda ace today, but because of his cruddy start in the final race, he fell short by 3 points and had to settle for fourth.

Meanwhile, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff finally cracked the top five, in overall results, when he passed his teammate, Tony Cairoli, on the last lap in the second race. The pass saw him cross the line in third place, which is the first time he’s finished inside the top three this year.

Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Tommy Searle also achieved a season best, sixth.

It’s better late than never. Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Anstie looks as though he has finally got his stuff together. This weekend Max proved he’s got the skill set, fitness and mental edge to win races. He won Race 1 with ease thanks to Seewer’s bad start, but in race two, Seewer got off the line equally as good and made him work hard to get the job done. Despite being thrown in the pressure cooker, Anstie handled it and was able to stand on the top step of the podium for the second time in a row. “That was one of the tightest races I’ve had,” he said, “it felt like the whole of Switzerland was behind Jeremy. Going through the waves I couldn’t even hear the bike.”

Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer set his dotting home fans ablaze with his fine display of dirtbike racing this weekend. The Swiss native dusted off the motocross playbook in Race 1 when he found himself buried mid-pack at turn one. If anyone said the track here in Frauenfeld was difficult to pass on, then they need to go and get some tips on how to pass from the ‘91’, because he blitzed past a ton of guys on his way to second place in the opening moto.

A better start in race two saw the hometown hero blast to the front of the field. The crowd erupted like you wouldn’t believe, even Anstie felt as though all of Switzerland was here egging the Suzuki star on. In the end, Max Anstie took the win after battling to the flag, but the down-to-earth kid from just up the road was still pretty satisfied with his 2 – 2 result for second overall, “I’m so so happy, I can’t find any words.” He said, “The spectators were so crazy and I am so happy to ride here at home in front of them. It’s an incredible feeling and I just can’t thank them and the people around me enough.”

Kemea Yamaha MX Official Team’s Benoit Paturel is MX2’s unsung hero. The French kid has been running a fever pitch pace all year although his results have been a little bit higgledy-piggledy despite his speed. Nevertheless, the Yamaha star on the rise has been constantly improving and authenticated his potential today with a 3 – 3 for third overall. He has also moved into third place in the championship standings.

Last but not least, the battle for fourth was tight between two unusual suspects. TM Factory Racing’s Samuele Bernardini and HSF Logistics Motorsports Calvin Vlaanderen were on fire today as they both charged into the top five. While we did say ‘unusual’, perhaps Bernardini doesn’t fall in that category as he has put in some blistering hot performances this year. Anyway, the Italian youngster was fourth; while the South African rookie that rides with a Dutch license, Vlaanderen, scored his first ever top five finish, fifth.

MX2 Race 1 Top Ten: 1. Max Anstie (GBR, Husqvarna), 35:18.680; 2. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), +0:10.590; 3. Benoit Paturel (FRA, Yamaha), +0:32.037; 4. Samuele Bernardini (ITA, TM), +0:47.010; 5. The glasses are available for purchase at all of the bars here in Frauenfeld-Gachnang, as well as at the MXGP merchandising Store, inside the paddock restaurant, and inside the VIP restaurant. MXGP and IRP wish to cooperate with such initiative until the end of the season, therefore 5,000 cups have been produced.

IRP is a foundation that boosts the research in paraplegia by providing researchers with the resources needed to fund their work. In addition, Team Suzuki World MX2’s Swiss sensation Jeremy Seewer was on stage to present his limited edition iXS race shirt, which has a traditional Swiss farmer’s influence. Only 91 copies were made.

Jeremy has donated one of his limited edition jersey, the number 91, which was signed by him personally at the press conference, to the IRP charity to be auctioned off inside the Organiser VIP Restaurant here at his home grand prix, the MXGP of Switzerland presented by iXS, where the 100% of the winning auction will be donated to charity.
