YAMAHA EXTENDS THANKS TO CALVIN VLAANDEREN AFTER FIVE SEASONS

Yamaha Motor Europe extends its sincere thanks to Calvin Vlaanderen as the South African concludes his five-year tenure with Yamaha following the natural completion of his contract.

Vlaanderen joined the Yamaha family in 2020, immediately taking the fight to the MXGP class aboard the YZ450F. A rider renowned for his technical prowess and determination, he quickly proved his potential by charging to a stunning Grand Prix victory in the demanding sand of Sardinia in 2022. After three impressive seasons showcasing his talent with a Yamaha-supported outfit, his relentless drive and consistent podium-challenging speed earned him a well-deserved seat on the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team for the 2024 and 2025 campaigns.

The last two seasons have been a testament to Vlaanderen's work ethic and fighting spirit. In 2024, he charged to two podium finishes and climbed to an impressive fourth in the world standings before a late-season injury halted his momentum. Bouncing back with trademark resilience in 2025, he returned with fire, adding three more hard-fought podiums to his tally.

Everyone at Yamaha Motor Europe wishes Calvin the very best in the next chapter of his career.

Yamaha Motor Europe Off-Road Racing Manager Alexandre Kowalski states: "On behalf of everyone at Yamaha Motor Europe, I would like to thank Calvin for his dedication, professionalism, and the many incredible moments we’ve shared throughout the past five years. Aside from his undeniable ability on a motorcycle, he is a great example of a top athlete - very humble, respectful and polite. It has been a genuine pleasure working with him. We wish him every success in the next chapter of his career."

ANTTI PYRHÖNEN AND KAWASAKI

When Frenchman, Romain Febvre crossed the finish line in the Australian Grand Prix last September and was crowned MXGP champion of 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship, one man wasn’t just happy, but he also felt a huge load come from his shoulders.

Former world number three (in MX3) and a man who has put more into the sport than most, Antti Pyrhönen celebrated as he should after the Febvre win. A loyal man, with a strong connection with Kawasaki, Pyrhönen knew that this world title wasn’t just a victory on the track, but a victory against all the tough luck over the years.

His relationship with Formula One legend, Kimi Räikkönen ads something of a Hollywood theme to the team and these two former Finnish sportsmen, have earnt themselves a world motocross championship. Räikkönen a former F1 world champion has been the backbone of the efforts of the team and remains a huge motocross fan.

“It is incredible,“ Pyrhonen said. “With Kimi, we started this team 14 years ago, so we have been together for 13 seasons. We have had our ups and downs, but one thing is for sure, we never gave up. Are target being once to win a world title and mission accomplished. I am extremely happy and proud of this. You know, we just kept working, kept trying. Getting through severe rider injuries or some years not having a rider with the capacity to battle for a title and now we did it. This is also a moment that I felt a big stone has rolled out of my heart, that after so many years of trying, I was able to reward Kimi and Kawasaki. Also, a big relief.”

The 2025 title though also meant a lot to Kawasaki, who hadn’t won in the premier class since Sebastien Tortelli won the 250 championship from Stefan Everts, in Greece, in 1998. It was Jan De Groot, the legendary Dutchman who managed that Tortelli effort, some 27 years ago, and to be honest, Pyrhönen is starting to make his own legacy in a sport that isn’t always kind. For Pyrhönen though, the win for Kawasaki means more to him than anything else.

“It is very important for Kawasaki and Romain is a guy with a big heart and he is a big champion and that is why I support that we carry the number one plate on his bike in 2026. Kawasaki’s last major title was 27 years ago with Sebastien Tortelli in 1998, and they deserve that title. Kawasaki, all the people there who supported this and they have given us the maximum support, and I am happy and proud to give them this title. Our Japanese colleges, they would fly in fly out and also because of the new regulations, everyone needed to work super hard. I can say else but my humble thank you, to Romain, to our team, ever staff member and of course Kawasaki. This has been team work at its very finest.”

Now, the Kawasaki factory team will enter 2026, with not only a number one plate on their bike, but also a huge pressure to defend the title, something Kawasaki have not done in the premier class or the MX2 class, in the sports history.

THE FIRST RIDER IN THE NEW MX BETA RIDER LINE-UP FOR THE 2026 SEASON HAS BEEN UNVEILED

Dutchman Rick Elzinga will take to the track in the 2026 MXGP Motocross World Championship with the Beta RX450 of Team Beta MRT Racing: an agreement has been reached between Team Beta and the 23-year-old rider born in Zenderen.

EMX 250 European Champion in 2022, Rick finished in the top ten, coming seventh, in the 2024 MX2 World Championship season, securing his first world championship podium in Portugal and another second place in the legendary Lommel.

In the 2025 season, which has just ended, Rick confirmed his qualities in the MX2 World Championship with consistent top ten finishes and thirteenth place in the final standings despite missing four GPs due to a collarbone injury. He returned to racing in good physical condition at the end of the season, narrowly missing out on the podium in the final GP in Australia, where he was third for most of Race 2.

Elio Marchetti: “We are proud to continue our relationship with Beta for the 2026 MXGP Motocross World Championship season, and we are already working on the first tests with the new RX450s. We would like to thank Ben Watson and Tom Koch for their hard work in 2025; for 2026, our team will still consist of two riders. Confirming our strategy of having a more experienced rider in the premier class and a young rookie to develop, we are pleased to announce the arrival of 22-year-old Rick Elzinga, who is already physically suited to the 450 and has an impressive track record that we will seek to enhance in his first year in the top category. We will soon announce the name of the other rider, as negotiations are currently underway. “

Rick Elzinga: “I would like to thank Betamotor and Elio Marchetti for this opportunity! I had the chance to try out the bike and I immediately liked it a lot. We will soon start working together and I confess that I am very excited about my first season riding a 450, an important “rookie season” for me! The team guys are very helpful and the goal now is to prepare as best as possible to arrive at the first stages of the World Championship with a good feeling with the bike and in good physical condition.”

While the team and the Dutch rider are working hard to prepare for the start of the season, anticipation for the 2026 MXGP World Championship is growing, and the name of the other rider who will complete the Beta line-up for the 2026 season will be revealed shortly.

FEBVRE AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP

Kawasaki Factory rider, Romain Febvre really showed in 2025, that he is more than capable of adding more world titles to his name and he will enter the 2026 season, confident that a third world MXGP championship is very confident.

Already with two, his first in 2015 and this years championships, he also has 26 Grand Prix wins, that puts him level in the all-time GP winners list with legendary Italian Alessio Chiodi, and not far behind Heikki Mikkola on 32, Gaston Rahier 30, Georges Jobe 28, Andre Malherbe 28, Paul Friedrichs 28 and Dave Strijbos 27. A solid 2026 and he should easily pass Strijbos, Friedrichs, Malherbe and Jobe, which is not mean feat.

Returning from the 2025 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, Febvre is ready for a busy winter, as he deals with sponsors, fans and friends, in his role as the current MXGP world champion.

“It feels good,” Febvre said on his return to Europe. “And now to come back to Europe I need to meet a lot of sponsors and friends. After the Nations, I forgot that a little bit and when I see people now, they all remind me I am a two-time world champion. Whenever somebody tells me that, it means a lot. It is a really good feeling.”

As for the season, it was a long and hard road to victory, but he showed time and time again, that winning a world motocross championship comes with being patient and confident.

“I am pretty sure I was the most consistent and I was always there. Even if I had one bad Race, I could cool down and then the next one and keep the championship points gap, it was always there. I could always keep some points. With Coenen, he is young and from the middle of the season, he had proved everything and anything after that was his job done and after it was a bonus. I think he was trying to win and beat me every time, even if he had to take some risk. He showed everything as a rookie and then, after, it was harder for me. I could not manage the gap, but I also needed to go for it and at some GPs I really needed to go for it and not make a mistake. In Sweden for example, I felt like if I get the holeshot, I really needed to win and that is what I did, and he then had a bad GP at that time.”

As for that visit to the Ironman circuit in America, for the Nations, the experience and was happy with making the podium with Team France. Always a tough event after a long season, Febvre looks back on Ironman with the knowledge that he ticked off a bucket list experience.

“Motivation is always there, but the travel was heavy, Turkiye, China, Australia, back to US, so the biggest challenge was the travel, and it was getting heavy going to the Nations. I was happy to ride there, a track that I wanted to ride once in my life, because it’s a nice track and also, Nations in US, is always special and I was happy to be there. Maybe I wasn’t feeling on my best level, because of the travel and after the championship. I had a vibe, that the stress and everything was low, and I was tired after a long season. I found I rode well and the European riders, we were okay against them. Maybe Australian won with Jett and Hunter, but some European riders, like Tim, or Lucas or myself, we were sometimes close to them. It was nice to see where we are compared to them.”

Now, with some rest, time with his little family and obligations as the world champion, he will return in 2026 as a 34 year old and with that little bit extra experience to make the defence of his MXGP championship, that little bit easier.

YAMAHA & JAGO GEERTS PART COMPANY AFTER EIGHT SUCCESSFUL SEASONS

Following the conclusion of the 2025 FIM Motocross World Championship, Yamaha Motor Europe announces the departure of Jago Geerts after a successful eight-year partnership.

Geerts began his professional motocross career with the Hans Corvers led Kemea Yamaha team in 2018. In his debut MX2 season, the talented young Belgian finished eighth overall and was awarded ‘Rookie of the Year’. In 2019, he stood on the podium seven times, was one of only three race winners that season and secured the MX2 World Championship bronze medal at the final round.

Across the next four seasons (2020–2023), Geerts consistently fought for the MX2 world title aboard a Factory YZ250FM. During that period, the 93 celebrated 45 race wins and 55 podium finishes, culminating in four MX2 championship silver medals. Upon reaching MX2’s age ceiling in 2023, Geerts moved up to the premier MXGP class alongside the Kemea outfit as it transitioned to the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP team.

Geerts’s rookie campaign in MXGP in 2024 was unfortunately interrupted by a complex elbow injury sustained at the season opener in March. Determined to return, Geerts lined up and completed his first full season aboard a 450cc in the premier class in 2025, demonstrating his resilience. Highlights of his season included his first MXGP Qualifying Race win at the MXGP of Spain in Lugo and his best Grand Prix results — a fourth in a race and a sixth overall — both achieved at the MXGP of Latvia, in Kegums.

Over eight seasons with Yamaha, Geerts amassed an impressive record: 105 top‑three race finishes, 55 podiums, 24 Grand Prix wins and five MX2 championship medals — a clear reflection of his ability.

Yamaha Motor Europe extends its sincere gratitude to Jago for his immense contribution to the Yamaha family over the years and wishes him every success in his future endeavours.

Alexandre Kowalski

Yamaha Motor Europe Off-Road Racing Manager,

“It has been a pleasure to have worked with Jago over the past eight years. After joining the Yamaha Family as a rookie in MX2, we have watched Jago grow into an incredible force. Together, we celebrated many big and memorable moments, including 24 GP wins and five championship medals. At the end of 2022, Jago showed what he was capable of on a YZ450FM with his impressive debut ride at the Monster Energy Motocross of Nations in Red Bud, USA, where he beat some of the biggest names in the sport. After that performance, Jago’s move to the 450 has been challenged by a series of unfortunate injuries. Throughout it all, we remained firmly committed to supporting him. Now, our journey together has reached its natural conclusion. We thank Jago for his dedication and tremendous contributions, and we sincerely wish him the very best in the next chapter of his career."
