Full throttle Friday in Kegums

KEGUMS (Latvia), 26 September 2014 - The excitement has really started to mount here in Kegums, Latvia for the 68th edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations. While the climate is feeling very winter-like, cool and damp, there is still a warm ambience as the teams set up and prepare for what is the most exciting and paramount event of the year.

While the teams sorted their pit areas out and got the bikes off to technical control, the riders were out feasting their eyes on the battlefield known to the locals as ‘Zelta Zirgs’ before the first ‘Media Opportunities’ of the weekend took place.

Just after lunch, the official Monster Energy athletes such as Gautier Paulin, Tommy Searle, Dean Wilson, Arnaud Tonus, and a few others attended the Monster Energy media opportunity, which took place in the Monster Energy rig. It was a unique opportunity for the press to get last minute interviews, videos and pictures with the starts before race day cracks on and nerves creep in.

Around mid-afternoon, Youthstream President Mr. Giuseppe Luongo, FIM Europe President Dr. Wolfgang Srb and FIM/CMS Director Tony Skillington held the ‘welcome press conference’ where each of them expressed their excitement for this weekend. Mr. Giuseppe Luongo said, “Welcome to another fantastic edition of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, I want to welcome all the teams present, it’s very good with thirty-four nations here it just confirms the MXoN is the biggest, most interesting motocross event in the world. You can see the preparation of the entire venue and the track is fantastic and our partner here in Latvia has done a great job!” Mr. Luongo then went on to confirm the next three editions of the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations will take place in Ernèe, France in 2015, Maggiora, Italy in 2016 and USA in 2017 with the location not yet confirmed.

Directly after the press conference the official team presentation for the highest ranked teams took place, teeing off with the defending champions, Team Belgium. Team USA followed as last years runners up, with the 2013 bronze medalist, Team Italy being the third team to take the stage. Other teams in attendance were Team Australia, Team France, Team Great Britain, Team Germany, Team Switzerland, Team Russia and the local heroes Team Latvia. Some of the coolest and most interesting quotes were:

“I feel really good, I am not stressed to ride with the number one plate. I like this track, I have ridden here a lot. I have won moto’s in the past here too so I feel really comfortable. Let the games begin!” Team Belgium’s Jeremy Van Horebeek said.

“I just have fun racing my dirtbike. I have never been over seas and I get to experience here riding with a bunch of new riders and learn and have fun so it’s gonna be awesome” American rookie Jeremy Martin told.

Team Italy’s Antonio Cairoli said, “The coincidence that I can come here and race with number eight is amazing just when I have got my eighth FIM Motocross World title. I have to say it’s not so easy to go back to the MX2 bike because the gearing and everything is completely different, but I feel comfortable and my goal is to get on the podium with Team Italy.

“We have a very strong team and the decision to pick Ferrandis over Tixier was made in June before Jordi (Tixier) was crowned world champion. But there are many fast riders in France but I think this is the right team, like I said, we have a very strong team.” Olivier Robert, the French Team Manager stated.

The other surprise MX2 rider, Team Great Britain’s Tommy Searle said, “I got back on a 250 after Mexico, I enjoy riding it and I feel like I’ve prepared well.”

MXoN History

There is no event like it in the world, the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations. As far back as 1947 when a British team won the event at the Wassenaar circuit in The Netherlands this race has grown into a massive celebration of the best riders in the World. Each year the many nations come together for what is our Olympics of motocross.

Back in the 1950’s and 60s it was Sweden and Great Britain who dominated this event, before the Belgians started their amazing run of victories. Winning their first in 1948 and their last in 2013 the Belgian team have won 15 times.

Of course after the Belgium era of domination came the might of Team USA, as the American took the event by storm in 1981 and in the last 31 years have won 22 times.

Riders like Ricky Johnson, David Bailey, Jeff Ward, Johnny O’Mara, Mike Kiedrowski, Jeff Emig, Jeremy McGrath, Jeff Stanton and many more made this event their own. Then came the era of Ricky Carmichael, Ryan Villopoto, James Stewart and Ryan Dungey, it was an unstoppable force that was not often broken.

It has been the American team that has really brought glamour to this event, as they came in their numbers, huge budgets and total professionalism. The rest of the world have to look on with respect, take their beating and then hope for some luck the following year.

Of course in recent years the tide has turned a little, with Team USA not winning in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2012 and 2013.

Carmichael rounds up his troops and won in 2005. Since that 2005 victory America have lost just twice, that being of course the last two years.

The win by Team USA at the Ernee circuit in 2005 also saw the event move to another level. The brilliance of RC, plus a solid performance by New Zealander Ben Townley brought added interest to the event and each year bigger crowds, larger facilities and more media attention has seen this race grow at an alarming rate.

Now comes 2014, set for the Kegums circuit in Latvia. Team USA will come to take what they feel is theirs. That defeat at the hands of Belgium in last year’s classic was a bitter pill for the very proud nation.

Ryan Dungey, Eli Tomac and Jeremy Martin will be heavy favorites, with only Team Belgium and Team France really having a chance of matching the American juggernaut, although for many it isn’t always about who wins the team event, but who wins the boasting rights.

10 years of moto winners

2004 Everts-Everts-Pichon

2005 RC-RC- Townley

2006 Everts-Cairoli-Everts

2007 Villopoto-RC-Villopoto

2010 Dungey-Dungey-Townley

2011 Paulin-Villopoto-Reed

2012 Cairoli-Cairoli-Herlings

The riders with the most moto wins from the last 8 years are Antonio Cairoli with 6, Ryan Villopoto with 4, Ryan Dungey and Ricky Carmichael 3 each, and Ben Townley and Gautier Paulin 2 each.

Whatever happens in Latvia on the soft sand of Kegums this weekend, you can count on riders like Dungey, Martin, Cairoli, Tomac, Paulin, Nagl, and many others giving 100%.

MXoN fever takes over Kegums

KEGUMS (Latvia), 24 September 2014 – It’s that time of year again! In just a few days, the event every motocross enthusiast awaits, the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations will burst into life for the 68th year in succession. After touching down in the Baltic region of Europe, we can already feel the intense buzz surrounding the event. It has been a life-long dream for the tiny nation of Latvia, home to around two million people, to host the mega-prestigious Motocross of Nations, now they have it and they are doing their utmost to make it as spectacular as years before.

The circuit, known to the locals as ‘Zelta Zirgs’, nestled in Kegums, is one of the most visually attractive circuits in the world. But while it looks super sweet with its caramel colored sand, perfectly formed jumps and lovely rolling wave sections, it has proven in the past to be anything but! As its hard base and soft surface becomes increasingly choppy and extremely deceiving throughout the course of the day.

It is certain the track will test the best, which is what is required to ensure that the best team from the staggering thirty-four nations entered will win. Speaking of teams, starting with the defending champions Team Belgium. If the three representing the land of beer and chocolate, Jeremy Van Horebeek - MXGP vice world champion, Kevin Strijbos - MXGP bronze medalist, and young gun Julien Lieber, who recently changed teams and throttled his way to an outstanding fourth place in the final MX2 world championship race of the year, ride to their potential, there is every chance they can retain the coveted Chamberlain Trophy. If they do so, they will match Great Britain who sits second in terms of ‘the most’ MXoN victories with a new total of 16.

Meanwhile, last year’s runners up, Team USA is quite possibly more eager than ever to snatch back the MXoN title. Each and every year, Team USA carries the weight of the world on their shoulders, as the most successful team in the history of ‘The Nations’ with a whopping 22 victories over the last 67 years, and by far the most populated country in attendance; they are almost always expected to win. This years’ soldiers, all armed and set to stand on the front line and proudly represent the stars and stripes, Ryan Dungey, Eli Tomac and America’s latest 250 sensation, Jeremy Martin. Dungey will be out to fire-back at the harsh criticism he has received over his recent MXoN outings, while it is expected Tomac will be lethal and should enjoy the soft surface as he is said to be an avid sand rider. The dark horse of the team is the rookie, Jeremy Martin. All we know about Martin is that he carved up in the AMA 250 championship this year winning seven of the twelve rounds!

One of the most intriguing aspects of MXoN 2014 will be Team Italy’s eight-time FIM Motocross World Champion Antonio Cairoli lining up in MX2! While Cairoli hasn’t raced an MX2 bike in a very long time, there is no doubt he still has the potential to win. With the support of fellow MXGP stars, the former FIM MX1 World Champion David Philippaerts and Davide Guarneri, Team Italy could in fact find themselves uncorking bottles of bubbly on the box for the second year in succession.

Germany and Australia are two teams that have taken a couple of blows to their ‘A’ teams, which means both will attend with less experienced, yet strong plan B squads. Starting with Australia, last year’s fourth place finishers. The Aussies are coming in this year with a completely different team to last year. Last year’s team of Brett Metcalfe, Dean Ferris and Todd Waters, who blew everyone away when they qualified on pole at what was the biggest and greatest MXoN ever, fell to pieces with Waters and Ferris out with injuries and Metty experiencing some other problems. Meanwhile, word on the street is Germany’s twenty-year old motocross sensation Ken Roczen couldn’t make it due to visa issues, and then their MX2 rider Marcus Schiffer had a gnarly crash last weekend while racing his national championship, sustaining severe injuries to his neck, collarbone and hand.

Although both Australia and Germany have caught a tough break, both teams have one thing going for them. They both are led by legends of today. Australia, made up of Matt Moss and MXoN rookie Luke Clout, will be led by none other than Chad Reed, while Team Germany’s Dennis Ullrich and MXoN rookie Henry Jacobi will be led by MXGP’s most recent dominating force, Max Nagl.

When the selection was made for Team France, a few eyebrows were undoubtedly raised with the newly crowned FIM MX2 World Champion Jordi Tixier off the list. While there are people who don’t understand this choice, the selection that has been made is still just as good. What’s going for the team of Gautier Paulin, Steven Frossard and Dylan Ferrandis is the team dynamic. These three riders are all good buddies off the track. They ride together, train together and laugh together, which will mean they will be lining up in good spirits with a plan and tactic to help each other get France to the top step of the podium.

Last but not least, Team Great Britain. What a team they have this year! A lot of hype is surrounding the Brits with the trio of Tommy Searle, Shaun Simpson and Dean Wilson being pegged to steal back the Chamberlain Cup, which hasn’t seen British soil since 1994. Although it is bizarre that Searle will race MX2 after racing the entire season in MXGP, and vice versa for Wilson who will race Open, they are confident they know what they are doing and that’s all that matters.
