It’s all about the 80’s

MAGGIORA (Italy), 14 June 2014 – The venue made most famous for the 1986 FIM Motocross of Nations was brought back to life for the second time this decade with Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek onboard his number 89 YZ450FM and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings onboard his number 84 KTM250SX-F toping the charts in today’s qualifying heat races.

While the paddock buzz screamed “pack your umbrellas it’s gonna be a mudder” the weather gods in Maggiora had other ideas bringing forth reasonably clear skies with cloud cover only creeping in mid-afternoon to supply the hard-pack surface of Maggiora with small amount of natural watering.

Thanks to the drizzle, the tracks’ condition was near perfect with no dust or mud in site. In the first races of round four of the European Championships EMX250 and EMX300, which also took place today, Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Sullivan Jaulin and Italian two stroke star TM Racing Team’s Samuele Bernardini dominated their respective classes for race one glory.

MXGP

Thousands of screaming fans hugged the fence line all set to watch their hero Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli take on the qualifying heat challenge. When the gates dropped, it was Hitachi Construction Machinery UK KTM’s Shaun Simpson who led a long train of works riders for the first half of lap one. While Cairoli was initially in second, he was quickly pushed back to fourth as two of the fastest from timed training, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Steven Frossard and Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek, wasted no time in moving forward.

After finding a way around Simpson who eventually dropped back to ninth, Frossard took over the lead followed by Van Horebeek and Cairoli. With the trio riding close enough for any error to be costly, Frossard was the first to crack under the pressure having a sketchy moment down a hill and over shooting a 180 turn at the bottom. Van Horebeek was quick to take advantage of the error of the Frenchman who fortunately was able to quickly re-enter the circuit in second just ahead of Cairoli.

The fans were on their feet, horns were blowing and fists were pumping as their star Cairoli charged up the inside of Frossard in front of pit lane. Once in second, the Italian went to work on Van Horebeek who was showing experience beyond his years up front. Despite the huge effort laid out today, Cairoli pushed Van Horebeek to the finish but didn’t have it in him to take the win, giving the friendly Belgian Van Horebeek his first qualifying heat win of the season.

Frossard rode home for a solid third while Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev should be applauded for his solid fourth only five seconds back from the winner Van Horebeek. Rounding out the top five a further two seconds back from ‘Bobby’ was Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Kevin Strijbos.

As for the other Italian stars DP19 Racing’s David Philippaerts and TM Ricci Racing’s Davide Guarneri, they came home in eleventh and twelfth respectively.

MXGP star Joel Roelants had a serious accident today three laps into MXGP’s timed practice. The young Belgian was air lifted to a hospital in Torino, Italy.

MXGP Qualifying Race top ten: 1. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), 24:02.932; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:02.571; 3. Steven Frossard (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:04.533; 4. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, Honda), +0:05.447; 5. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, Suzuki), +0:07.621; 6. Clement Desalle (BEL, Suzuki), +0:08.533; 7. Tommy Searle (GBR, Kawasaki), +0:16.343; 8. Ken de Dycker (BEL, KTM), +0:27.807; 9. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), +0:29.674; 10. David Philippaerts (ITA, Yamaha), +0:31.162

MX2

There is something in the air of Maggiora for Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Aleksandr Tonkov as he, just like last year, hauled off the line to claim the MX2 qualifying heat holeshot. While in 2013 Tonkov went on to claim his first ever qualifying heat win, today’s bid for pole was soon brought to a halt by KTM Silver Action’s Jose Butron who bravely jumped the double right out of the first turn to take over the lead.

After soaking up half a lap of fame, the duo Butrón and Tonkov’s time to shine was cut short as ‘The Bullet’ Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings was quick to move through.

With Herlings going on to win in typical Herlings style, the battle for second was scorching. Butrón held second for the first few laps looking super hungry for a good result but appeared to have exerted too much energy maintaining the position and eventually dropped all the way back to ninth.

With Tonkov taking over second, the next weapon in Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s arsenal, Jordi Tixier, was starting to close in. Inside outside, outside inside, jump long, jump short, Tixier was trying everything to push past Tonkov. After a good ten minutes of relentless pressure he finally made a pass that stuck.

Meanwhile back in fourth another intense battle was shaping up. Last year’s EMX250 vice-champion Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Jeremy Seewer was putting in a phenomenal ride constraining the likes of CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Dylan Ferrandis, Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre and old rival EMX250 Champion Standing Construct KTM’s Valentin Guillod.

With all four riding of the heels of each other, a mistake from Tonkov who was riding third, moved all four up one spot. Ferrandis eventually cracked the young Swiss Seewer, who a few laps later lost out to Febvre, too. Nevertheless, the Swiss star held off his fellow countryman Guillod to take home his best qualifying race result of the year.

Crossing the line, Herlings took the win twenty-two seconds ahead of Tixier, Ferrandis and Febvre with Seewer rounding out the top five ahead of Guillod and the holeshotter Tonkov. Marchetti Racing’s young Italian star Ivo Monticelli came home in a respectable eighth.

MX2 Qualifying Race top ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 24:14.040; 2. Jordi Tixier (FRA, KTM), +0:22.702; 3. Dylan Ferrandis (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:23.573; 4. Romain Febvre (FRA, Husqvarna), +0:25.869; 5. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), +0:28.624; 6. Valentin Guillod (SUI, KTM), +0:28.910; 7. Aleksandr Tonkov (RUS, Husqvarna), +0:36.397; 8. Ivo Monticelli (ITA, KTM), +0:41.321; 9. Jose Butron (ESP, KTM), +0:46.515; 10. Damon Graulus (BEL, KTM), +0:48.597.

New school, old school

FUNCHAL (Portugal), 11 June 2014 – Italian fans redefine the word passion year after year, which is what is to be expected during MXGP of Italy which is set to take place at the recently upgraded Maggiora circuit this weekend.

Marking round ten of the FIM Motocross World Championship, last year’s MX2 winner Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings has the chance to take a step towards yet another record this weekend, with only one rider in history to have won two Grand Prix’ at the circuit of Maggiora. That rider was Italian legend Alessandro Puzar, and now Dutch prodigy Herlings has the chance to tie with Puzar as the rider with the most Grand Prix victories in Maggiora.

Meanwhile in the MXGP class Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s local legend Antonio Cairoli narrowly lost out to Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Gautier Paulin last year in one of the most memorable battles in the history of our sport. This season the Frenchman, Paulin, is unfortunately still on the mend after breaking his collar bone and thumb during MXGP of The Netherlands, which has left MXGP of Italy in the palms of MXGP fan favorite Antonio Cairoli.

Joining the paddock of MXGP and MX2 this weekend, rounds four of the European Championships EMX300 and EMX250 will take place with British CNC Racing KTM’s Steven Clarke leading the EMX250 and Italian two-stroke star TM Racing Team’s Samuele Bernardini leading the EMX300.

As for upgrades to the track and venue, the roads and streets leading into the circuit have been widened for better traffic flow and access, while new lighting systems have been put in place for better nighttime visibility. Alterations have been made to the track to make it a little more technically challenging. New obstacles have been introduced with the idea of providing a wider selection of lines and options to overtake while the spectating zones that surround the track have been developed to offer the public better visibility to improve their overall MXGP experience.

MXGP

Known to his fans as MX Panda, Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Clement Desalle is looking like he has reached his peak in physical and mental condition over the last few rounds of MXGP as he continues to quietly chomp away at the lead of Italian favorite Antonio Cairoli.

With the Yamaha Factory Racing team being based in Italy, it’s almost like a home GP for their star Jeremy Van Horebeek who has openly said he believes he will bag at least one MXGP overall win this year.

Meanwhile, with more than 376K likes on Facebook, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli is one of Italy’s biggest stars and this weekend there is sure to be tens of thousands of raging ‘TC222’ fans rooting for their hero as he looks to take home the victory at his home Grand Prix.

All of Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s eggs are in the basket of Steven Frossard since their other super fast Frenchman Gautier Paulin is still out with injury. Frossard has been showing good form lately and after winning the qualifying race at MXGP of Trentino back in April, there is no counting the Frenchman out on a hilly Italian style circuit such as Maggiora.

Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev nailed his best MXGP round finish this season at MXGP of France in Saint Jean d’Angely. The Russian came away with fifth overall which could be a good sign things are looking up.

Keeping those green, white and red Italian flags waving, the 2008 FIM Motocross World Champion David Philippaerts on board his DP19 Racing Yamaha and TM Ricci Racing’s Davide Guarneri will be keeping the fans pumped as both battle for their best MXGP finish of the season.

MXGP Championship Classification Top 10: 1. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 393 points; 2. Clement Desalle (BEL, SUZ), 373 p.; 3. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 358 p.; 4. MX2

With Herlings being the hot favorite for the MX2 title, the next best challenger is more often than not CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Arnaud Tonus. Tonus said at MXGP of France he is working towards being able to win against Herlings this year, which has got MX2 fans on their feet as they anxiously await this great duel.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jordi Tixier is still trying to redeem himself after a rough start to the year. The Frenchman is steadily climbing the charts and is now fourth in the overall standings only six points shy of fellow Frenchman Romain Febvre.

Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre is hungry to hold on to that podium spot in the overall standings. While the challenge is going to be tough, Febvre has proved time and time again that he is a fighter and he never backs down.

Meanwhile Standing Construct KTM’s Valentin Guillod has been so close, yet so far, but has still proved the speed is there which leaves promise for the Swiss sensation to stand on the podium at least once before the season comes to a close.

MX2 Championship Classification Top 10: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 394 points; 2. Arnaud Tonus (SUI, KAW), 349 p.; 3. Romain Febvre (FRA, HUS), 297 p.; 4. Jordi Tixier (FRA, KTM), 291 p.; 5. While in other events, the organizers of MXGP of Italy have arranged a mountain bike show with ramps and a pump track as well as a giant air-bag trampoline which is 9 meters long for people to jump on.

On Friday 13 June, the charity Road2Recovery is hosting a charity dinner in the Balmone restaurant which is located onsite. The dinner will feature special guest, American legend Johnny O’mara who was one of the victors for team USA during the 1986 FIM Motocross of Nations, which took place at this very circuit in Maggiora. The dinner begins at 20:00, for more information click here.

Also the following night, Saturday 14 June, there will be a massive party with Virgin Radio which will be followed by Team Italy playing Football on the Maxi screen over in Brazil for the Football World Cup.

Maggiora presented to national media

Last Thursday 05 June MXGP of Italy, which is set to place in Maggiora this weekend, was presented to the national media.

With over twenty-five of Italy’s top media representatives in attendance Maggiora Park Organizer’s Mr. Paolo Schneider and Mr. Stefano Avandero, Mayor of Maggiora Mr. Giuseppe Fasola, Marketing Manager of Performance in Lighting Miss Alessia Usuelli along with the 2008 FIM Motocross World Champion and Italian star David Philippaerts presented to the national media all improvements that have been made to the venue in order to make MXGP of Italy one of the best of the season.

This year the historic circuit of Maggiora has undergone a slight make over. Alterations have been made to some areas of the track to increase the skill level required to ride. New lines should be formed throughout the weekend offering more options for riders to overtake. As for the jumps, they have been restored and cleaned up ready for the Grand Prix.

Surrounding the track, spectating zones have been developed to offer the public better visibility and improve their overall MXGP experience. The streets leading to the track have been widened and new low energy lighting systems have been put in place thanks to the company ‘Performance in lighting’.

Last Monday the defending seven-time world champ, Antonio Cairoli stopped by to check out the improvements to the circuit and venue as well as catch up with the MXGP of Italy organizers Mr. Schneider and Mr. Avandero.

As of now, MXGP of Italy is ready to go in Maggiora and is set to be a showstopper with a chain of activities put in place. Spectators can expect to enjoy all the action of MXGP and MX2 as well as support classes EMX250 and EMX300. In addition to the racing, there will be a mountain bike show with ramps and a pump track in place, as well as a giant air-bag trampoline which is 9 meters long for people to jump on.

The ninth issue of the MXGP Mag is Online

ST.JEAN D’ANGELY (France), 29 May 2014 - Youthstream presents the ninth issue of the MXGP Mag with the best moments of the MXGP of the Netherlands, Spain and Great Britain, and a special feature on former tennis world number 1, Kim Clijsters and her visit to the MXGP of the Netherlands. In this new issue you will also find a special feature on Jeremy Van Horebeek and we will go back in time remembering the achievements of MX Legend Dave Thorpe.

Click here to read the ninth issue of MXGP Mag or download it for FREE on Apple Store or Google Play. The iOs and Android versions contain exclusive videos and several photo galleries, and once the MXGP Mag has been downloaded, the reader does not need to be connected on the Internet to go through the content.

Those users who have already downloaded the other issues on their iOs device can automatically download the ninth issue by opening the News Stand and clicking on the cover of the MXGP Mag. Whereas those readers using an Android device will be able to download the magazine for free thanks to this new app: http://bit.ly/IssuuOnAndroid
