MXGP mad in Matterley

MATTERLEY BASIN (Great Britain), 20 May 2015 - Riders and fans alike couldn’t be more excited for the MXGP of Great Britain, round seven of the FIM Motocross World Championship, which set to take place at the glorious track Matterely Basin this weekend.

As always, the ambience in and around the paddock will be epic with thousands of fans expected to flock to the venue to witness what is one of the greatest and most spectator friendly grand prix on the calendar.

The first MXGP to take place on the wide, flowing and grippy natured Matterley Basin was back in 2006 where Stefan Everts won the premier class and David Philippaerts won in MX2. Since 2006, the British Grand Prix has been held at Matterley Basin a total of six times with its most recent grand prix being last year, in 2014, where Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli won the MXGP while his teammate Jeffrey Herlings won MX2.

Also joining in on the action this weekend, the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship will return after a long break to take on the third round of their championship. As it stands, the defending WMX world champion FontaMX Yamaha Racing’s Kiara Fontanesi has the red plate but is tied for points with former WMX world champion Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot.

Meanwhile the fourth rounds of EMX125 and EMX250 will also take place with KTM Factory Juniors Jorge Prado leading the 125’s by nineteen points over Kemea Yamalube Yamaha’s Maxime Renaux, while J-Tech Honda’s Nick Kouwenberg leads the EMX250 by five points of Bud Racing Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Maxime Desprey.

The Honda European Championship EMX150 will also be hosting its second round with Swede Albin Larsen narrowly leading the championship by one point over Fin Emil Weckman.

.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli decided to switch things up last weekend when he rocked out with an extra 100cc, due to the swap from the KTM350SX-F to the KTM450SX-F, and a new color scheme in his choice of AXO race wear. With the change attracting a lot of attention, it was a move that panned out for the Italian who won his first grand prix since August 2014. This weekend in Matterley, the eight-times FIM Motocross World Champion will be the likely bet for the win having won here last year and if he does so, he will claim his sixth British Grand Prix victory which will make him the most successful MXGP rider on British soil.

Again, Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl cannot be counted out. With so much hype surrounding Tony and his random choices at MXGP of Spain, it has shadowed the fact that Max did tie with Tony on forty-five points for the grand prix win. Of course the victory was awarded to Tony who had the better result in the final race, but we can expect to see Max eager to be back on top this weekend.

It’s hard to believe Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre is still a MXGP rookie. We are getting so used to see him running up front, it almost wouldn’t come as much of a surprise if he bags a race win or even an overall before the season is out. The little Frenchman landed on the podium for the first time in his premier class career at MXGP of Spain and is bound to be hungry to do it again.

Meanwhile in 2013 Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle edged out TC222 for the Grand Prix of Great Britain victory. TC retaliated last year and edged Desalle out for it, so as always, we can expect to see the MX Panda, who has admitted he loves the track in Matterley, at the sharp end of the field, possibly vying for his first MXGP overall of the year.

Both of Team HRC’s talents Evgeny Bobryshev & Gautier Paulin are always potential podiumers. Seven rounds in to the MXGP series, we’ve learnt that if these two get off the start up front, that’s where they remain. So it’s up to them to notch some of those FOX Holeshots to their belts and bank some valuable championship points.

Another hot topic is the presence of American Mike Alessi. Alessi will race his Smartop MotoConcepts Racing Suzuki this weekend, which will add a little more flare and excitement to the already stacked MXGP class. The last time Alessi raced the FIM Motocross World Championship was back in 2010 at the US Grand Prix in Glen Helen where he finished second overall to Antonio Cairoli.

There is sure to be a ton of hype surrounding Hitachi Construction Machinery Revo KTM’s Shaun Simpson. Okay, so we know Shaun is actually Scottish, but this is the closest grand prix he has and as the multi-time British champion he is bound to have loads of support. As for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Tommy Searle, it appears that he will not be lining up after breaking his collar-bone in the crash he had in Spain.

Unfortunately the number two machine of Ryan Villopoto won't be on the line this weekend which was confirmed in a press release from his team Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing, "The specialist medical team working with the four time US Supercross champion have confirmed Ryan’s coccyx injury and have also discovered an L4 compression in Ryan’s lower spine. Upon close examination, X-rays indicated that the injured bone material is healing but not at the speed either the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team rider or his advisors would hope."

It has already been a pretty crazy year for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s MX2 phenomenon Jeffrey Herlings. Jeffrey has had some pretty massive get offs this season, of which he has been very lucky to come away unscathed. Despite each of those uncharacteristic occasions, the twenty-year old knows how lucky he has been and is just happy to retain the red plate.

How amazing would it be if Standing Construct Yamaha Yamalube’s Valentin Guillod took another race win this weekend. Let’s face it, the kid from Switzerland has insane speed and style and he brings another dimension to MX2 racing. Now that he had a taste of what it is like to stand on top of the box, we are sure he is confident he can do it again and we look forward to seeing what he will bring to the table this weekend.

The defending champion Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jordi Tixier will be hoping he can minimize his errors this weekend and throw together two solid results. Meanwhile a lot of the attention within the team will be placed on their latest import Bulgarian Petar Petrov who will be filling in for the injured Dylan Ferrandis who underwent a knee operation last week.

Rounding out this weekend’s preview, two riders who could set Matterley on fire are Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser and the local hero Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Max Anstie. While Gajser proved he is capable with his race and overall win at MXGP of Trentino, he will need to keep the bike rubber side down if he is to be of any genuine threat to Jeffrey this weekend. The same can be said for Max.

Desprey, Prado & Martens win in Talavera

TALAVERA DE LA REINA (Spain), 10 May 2015 – The third round of the European Championships EMX250 and EMX125 and the second round of the EMX300 championship took place in Talavera de la Reina, Spain this weekend where Bud Racing Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Maxime Desprey and Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Racing’s Yentel Martens took their second round victories in the EMX250 and EMX300 while the local hero KTM Factory Juniors’ Jorge Prado made his nation proud with his first ever EMX overall victory in the EMX125.

Bud Racing Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Maxime Desprey was in a league of his own this weekend. The Frenchman took the holeshot in both races to wrap up his second EMX round overall with a perfect fifty points score.

With Desprey checking out in race two, the battle to watch was between Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s David Herbreteau and Kemea Yamaha Yamalube’s Damon Graulus. Graulus stayed hot on the heels of Herbreteau and patiently awaited an error, but the error never came. Instead Graulus needed to make something happen and with a sense of urgency pinned it around an inside rut which ran into the line of Herbreteau. Herbreteau went down and didn’t manage to start his bike again, which was devastating for the young Frenchman who sat second for fourteen of fifteen laps.

Graulus then secured second place and the second step of the podium while Bodo Schmidt Motorsport’s Thomas Kjer Olsen rode to a solid third despite a brief challenge from Mafi Yamaha MX Team’s Alvin Ostlund. Kjer Olsen’s third place in race two combined with his fourth in race one landed him on the third step of the podium.

Ostlund came home in fourth in race two with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Davy Pootjes rounding out the top five.

The day couldn’t have got off to a better start for the thousands of rowdy Spanish fans who came out to support their future star KTM Factory Juniors’ Jorge Prado who pulled the holeshot and led every lap for the race two victory and his first ever EMX125 round win. Meanwhile, hats off to his KTM Factory Juniors’ teammate, race one winner Josiah Natzke who was only fifth around turn one but charged hard to be in second before the end of lap two.

In race two, Natzke slowly chipped away at Prado’s lead which made the last lap super intense as the fans urged their countryman on. While the race was cut close, it was Prado who held on to win by less than a second over Natzke meaning the duo would tie for the win with the winner being determined by the final race result.

The day went from good to better for the KTM Factory Junior team with their third rider Conrad Mewse also putting in an impressive performance to finish third in race two.

Italian Davide Cislaghi sealed the deal on fourth place which was identical to the result he received in the first race yesterday. Two fourth positions landed Cislaghi on the podium which is an impressive improvement on his overall finishes from the previous two rounds.

Rounding out the top five in race two was the early season red plate holder Kemea Yamaha Yamalube’s Maxime Renaux.

Yet another flawless performance for Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Racing’s Yentel Martens who, just as he did in race 1, chased Marco Maddii around the first turn followed by GL12 Racing’s Lewis Gregory. After following Maddii for a lap, Martens dropped the hammer and swung around the outside of the Italian, Maddii, in an awesome pass that was sealed by a scrub over the next jump.

With Martens moving into the lead, yesterdays race one runner-up, Gregory knew he had to act fast, and did so with an easy pass on the Italian Marco Maddii a few turns later.

Britain’s Matthew Moffat controlled fourth from start to finish although he did have his work cut out for him on the final lap with South African Damon Strydom laying in a late race charge.

At the end of the weekend, the podium clearly belonged to Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Racing’s Yentel Martens with his double race victory. GL12 Racing’s Lewis Gregory put in a pair of seconds for second while Marco Maddii rounded out the top three with two thirds.

Cairoli & Herlings on pole for MXGP of Spain

TALAVERA DE LA REINA (Spain), 09 May 2015 – The historic clay based track in the hills of Talavera de le Reina set the scene for round six of the FIM Motocross World Championship which saw the eight-time FIM Motocross World Champion, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli come out all guns blazing, as predicted, for his third qualifying heat victory of the year. Meanwhile in MX2, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings put in a last lap charge for his sixth consecutive heat race victory, to remain un-beaten in qualifying this year.

Rounds two and three of the European Championships EMX125, EMX250 and EMX300 also kicked off with KTM Factory Junior’s Josiah Natzke winning his first ever EMX125 race while Bud Racing Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Maxime Desprey took his third race victory of the season in the EMX250. In the EMX300, Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna’s Yentel Martens keeps his perfect season in tact with his third race win.

Before the gates had even dropped most eyes were on Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli as he opted to line up here at the MXGP of Spain on a KTM 450 rather than his usual weapon of choice, the KTM 350.

After whipping out a holeshot, which allowed him to control the race from start to finish for his third qualifying heat win of the season, the Italian proved that his decision could potentially be a big step in the right direction.

Meanwhile, the race did in fact get off to a decent start with last year’s winner here in Talavera, Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle chasing the champ around turn one. Despite pushing hard to match the fierce pace the eight-time world champ was setting, it proved difficult for the Belgian, which left him to finish a respectable second.

Back in third, Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev barged his way through the pack after having an average jump off the gate. Miraculously the Russian emerged from turn two in third where he remained for the entire race.

Rounding out the top five, the MXGP championship leader, RedBull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl lasted in the pressure cooker for fourth, while Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Romain Febvre was on a relentless mission through the field which saw him eventually wrap up the race hard on the heels of Nagl for fifth.

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 25:16.852; 2. Clement Desalle (BEL, Suzuki), +0:01.877; 3. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, Honda), +0:12.839; 4. Maximilian Nagl (GER, Husqvarna), +0:13.833; 5. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:14.368; 6. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Honda), +0:22.953; 7. Steven Frossard (FRA, KTM), +0:24.680; 8. Tommy Searle (GBR, KTM), +0:37.093; 9. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, Suzuki), +0:39.460; 10. David Philippaerts (ITA, Yamaha), +0:47.124

It appeared Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Thomas Covington had caught fire here in the scorching heat of Spain as he nailed the holeshot and went on to lead the entire MX2 qualifier except for the last two laps, which happen to be the ones that count.

What was so impressive about Covington’s performance was the fact that Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings actually chased him around turn one and despite mixing up his lines and riding aggressive, yet clean, just struggled to find a way to make a pass stick.

Meanwhile Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jordi Tixier kept the leading duo in check with the occupation of third, while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass and Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Max Anstie battled for fourth.

As the top five struggled to find new lines and ways to pass on the hard and slick circuit, when the last lap board came out, it caused complete pandemonium. Herlings managed to pin it around the outside of Covington and finally put the lead on lock, while Tixier edged out his teammate to take over second half of a lap later.

Herlings managed to sneak away while Tixier threw away his hard fought second place when he lost the front end going into a corner on the backside of the circuit. Both Max Anstie and Pauls Jonass were quick to take advantage of Tixier’s fault and both moved up a spot.

With time running out fast, Anstie who had pushed his way into third was all over Covington for second, which he claimed in dramatic fashion on the final turn. With ‘T-Cov’ being forced back to third, Jonass wrapped up a solid fourth while Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser rounded out the top five.

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 23:57.577; 2. Max Anstie (GBR, Kawasaki), +0:04.366; 3. Thomas Covington (USA, Kawasaki), +0:04.614; 4. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), +0:05.874; 5. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:06.962; 6. Petar Petrov (BUL, KTM), +0:17.326; 7. Julien Lieber (BEL, Yamaha), +0:19.135; 8. Dylan Ferrandis (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:21.175; 9. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), +0:21.725; 10. Jordi Tixier (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:28.492

Round six set to tear up Talavera

TALAVERA DE LA REINA (Spain), 06 May 2015 - Judging by previous rounds of MXGP, MXGP of Spain, round six of the FIM Motocross World Championship that will take place in Talavera de la Reina this weekend, is set to be a scorcher. That pun was by all means intended with unclouded skies forecasted and the championship running hotter than ever as Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl leads for the second time this year, five points over Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle.

As for the track facts, the first time a round of the FIM Motocross World Championship took place in Talavera de la Reina was back in 1994 where American Donny Schmit won the formerly titled ‘FIM 250cc Motocross World Championship’, now known as ‘MXGP’. Since 1994, there have only been nine rounds of the FIM Motocross World Championship to have taken place on the hilly clay based circuit, seven of which were consecutive, from 1994 through to 2000.

After a slight hiatus, MXGP returned to Talavera last year where Clement Desalle was victorious in the premier class, while Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings won in MX2. There has only ever been one two-time winner at the circuit of Talavera and that was none other than the ten-times FIM Motocross World Champion Stefan Everts. Both Desalle and Herlings will be looking to equal that stat this weekend.

Meanwhile, Spanish fans will be excited to know Honda Gariboldi’s young Spanish sensation Jorge Zaragoza will make his return to MX2 after sustaining a broken back earlier this year, while Marchetti Racing KTM’s Jose Butron will fly the flag for Spain in the premier class.

In addition to the two FIM Motocross World Championship Spaniards, KTM Factory Junior’s super talent Jorge Prado is leading the European Championship EMX125, a class which will line up for their third round this weekend along with the third round of the EMX250 and second round of the EMX300 championships.

Team HRC’s Gautier Paulin should be radiating confidence this weekend after getting the monkey off of his back in dominating style at MXGP of Europe. While the flamboyant Frenchman destroyed the competition in the sand of Valkenswaard, he is known to be just as fast on hard packed surfaces so it’s going to be interesting to see what kind of momentum the number 21 will be carrying.

2015’s surprise performer Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl has already got three overalls to his name and will be aiming for a fourth this weekend. The German holds the red plate for the second time this year and is looking as solid as a rock. It is getting pretty hard to bet against him.

As for Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle, the Belgian is hungrier than ever for an overall victory and will definitely be a hot pick for this weekend, especially since he is the 2014 MXGP of Spain victor.

Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev has also embarked on his journey up the ladder. Bad luck tends to stalk the super determined Russian, but after his impressive performance in Trentino where he won the qualifier and wound out the grand prix in sixth followed by a fourth overall in Valkenswaard, the next obvious step is the podium.

Meanwhile Yamaha Factory Racing Yamalube’s Romain Febvre will fly the Yamaha factory flag solo again this weekend as teammate and last year’s runner-up Jeremy Van Horebeek remains sidelined with a broken foot. In spite of Jere’s absence, the Yamaha squad still have a good shot at the podium with the pace Febvre has proved his is capable of running this year. .

And then there are Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto. Both champions haven’t had the ideal start to the year, RV cracked his coccyx at MXGP of Trentino and was forced to sit, or stand, out in Valkenswaard while Tony crashed out of race one at MXGP of Europe and fractured his hand.

Tony, being the true champion that he is, managed to grind out the second race at MXGP of Europe for seventh place and eleventh over all. After loosing 25 points in the first race and only claiming a handful in the second, the defending champ is now thirty points down on the MXGP points lead. Nonetheless, we are only five rounds in to our eighteen round haul, and we’ve seen Tony bounce back from similar situations to win the championship before, so regardless, there is no counting the Italian legend out.

Meanwhile, it has just been confirmed that Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto will not race this weekend, the American has said, “My goal is to be back racing as soon as possible, but to have a chance to fight for MXGP wins you must be 100% fit. Together with the Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team we did our best for a prompt recovery, but unfortunately we have to wait a few more days before we'll be back racing.”

In other news, both Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Kevin Strijbos and Wilvo Forkrent KTM’s Jake Nicholls were out racing last weekend, which shows promise that both riders could line up here in Talavera.

While Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings hasn’t been flawless this season, when he is on it, there is not catching him. So as always, The Bullet will be the safest bet for the win.

Meanwhile, the battle for second place in the MX2 championship continues to rage on. Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser didn’t have the best day in the office at MXGP of Europe, but was lucky to even race after he catapulted himself off of his CRF250 in the qualifying heat which only got worse when he took a dip in the fountain at the start of MX2 race one. Nevertheless, the Slovenian is the only rider to have beat Herlings fair and square in a very long time and since the surface in Spain is on the opposite end of the spectrum to Valkenswaard, it will be mega to see him challenge for the win.

The defending MX2 world champion, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Jordi Tixier should also be solid on the natural clay based track in Talavera as will his teammate Dylan Ferrandis.

As for other contenders, you never know when Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Aleksandr Tonkov will catch fire and pull a podium out of the bag and the same can be said for Standing Construct Yamaha Factory Racing’s super Swiss Valentin Guillod.
