Herlings & Covington top the Monster Energy MXGP of USA Qualifying

WW Motocross Park, Jacksonville (USA), 2 September 2017 - The world class racing has begun at the Monster Energy MXGP of USA in Jacksonville, Florida. The WW Motocross Park hosted the first of the weekend’s epic race days where the best riders in the world are coming together for MXGP racing. In what was only a sample of the epic battles expected to take place tomorrow, the moist sand of the circuit played well into the hands of Qualifying Race winners Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and the Belgium based American rider, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington.

MXGP Qualifying shot out of the Monster Energy starting gates and down the long start straight and sweeping left turn. Leading the field was Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP’s Romain Febvre. Febvre carried slightly to much speed through the sweeping rollers however and faded out to the edge of the track allowing Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings past.

Cairoli took the premier position to start the race with Herlings behind. Cairoli faced an early challenge from the #84 but a mistake from Herlings allowed him to pull a gap. Behind the front three was Autotrader/JGR/Suzuki Team’s Justin Barcia and Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP’s Jeremy Van Horebeek.

Barcia led the Yamaha rider for the first four laps but was eventually passed and shortly after came together with Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin as both where trying to slow down for a down lapped rider. Paulin remounted to finish 8th but Barcia would pull off and take 34th.

Meanwhile Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Eli Tomac was battling his way back from a poor start. While the #3 had a good jump off the grid, into the first corner he got caught up in a bottle neck. Coming across the finish line for the first time Tomac was 14th. The Kawasaki rider tried to push forward but to little avail finishing in 12th.

One rider who was able to move forward after the start was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl. Nagl started the race in 8th but had a strong lap 5 where he passed four riders to move into 4th position which he held to the finish.

Back at the front Herlings closed back in Cairoli and the battle between the two title contender was on! Eventually on lap 5 Jeffrey Herlings and Cairoli were split by a lapped rider but when they had both made it by him Herlings was the new leader out braking Cairoli into a corner. Herlings not only held the lead but grew it to over 19 and a half seconds at the finish. Herlings in the press conference said: “We had a good Qualifying Race obviously, the start was really good actually I was second or third and I managed to pass both Febvre and Cairoli on the first lap, but I made a little mistake and Tony jumped back by. I was very excited about today, we were fastest in both practices and then I won the qualifying race, I feel physically strong, mentally strong, and I can’t wait for the gate to drop tomorrow.”

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 25:03.186; 2. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:19.666; 3. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:45.593; 4. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:49.042; 5. Maximilian Nagl (GER, Husqvarna), +0:52.239; 6. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), +0:54.709; 7. Arminas Jasikonis (LTU, Suzuki), +1:00.729; 8. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Husqvarna), +1:03.989; 9. Clement Desalle (BEL, Kawasaki), +1:05.332; 10. Shaun Simpson (GBR, Yamaha), +1:07.446.

In MX2 the American MX2 rider, Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington, stole the show at his home GP. Covington started the race with a holeshot and never looked back continually growing his lead and then maintaining it even mentioning that he conserved energy in his 6 second victory over the rest of the field.

Racing into the second position in surprising fashion was the American professional rookie, Yamalube Star Racing Yamaha's Justin Cooper. Cooper held the position from the first lap with standing charges from several competitors while at the same time managing to keep Covington honest.

Behind Cooper in the beginning stages of the race was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado Garcia. Olsen made a few stabs at Cooper while at the same time Prado challenged Olsen but all attempts fell short.

Instead the successful charge came from the teammate of Prado, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass. Jonass ran 5th the first 7 laps and at times was quite far back from Prado but on lap 8 he made it by the younger Spaniard. 2 laps later Jonass came out ahead of a wheel to wheel battle with Olsen for third.

In the end Prado took fifth led by Olsen, Jonass, Cooper, and the race winner Thomas Covington. Covington in the post race press conference said: “I feel really good, today went pretty much perfect, I had a little issue in the Free Practice but then for the Timed Practice I came out there and set in a good time right at the beginning of the practice. In the qualifying race I just pulled a holeshot, which I think was really important and I just tried to save some energy for tomorrow, just ride smooth and not make any mistakes.”

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Thomas Covington (USA, Husqvarna), 25:25.861; 2. Justin Cooper (USA, Yamaha), +0:06.233; 3. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), +0:10.104; 4. Season Ending Injury for Benoit Paturel

Kemea Yamaha Official MX2's Benoit Paturel will miss the remainder of the FIM MX2 World Championship season following an accident while training.

Benoit Paturel crashed on Wednesday 30th of September while training at Villars-sous-Ecot, the same venue that will host the final round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in three-week's time. Following a medical examination soon after the accident, it was confirmed that the twenty-two year-old had lacerated his liver. He remains in hospital under observation.

Due to this unfortunate injury Benoit Paturel - who is currently third place in the MX2 Championship Standings - will miss the remaining three rounds of the FIM MX2 World Championship.

Hans Corvers, Kemea Yamaha Official MX2: "It's a shame to end the season this way. Before the season had even started we made a plan to fight for the championship and the podium and we did. I am so happy he was able to win his first Grand Prix with us, but it's really sad that he won't be able to end the season the way he deserves. Benoit is a true fighter, he works his butt off every single day, and this is what makes it a disappointing end to what was an incredible three-year relationship between Benoit Paturel and Kemea Yamaha Official MX2. On behalf of the team, and especially from me personally, I would like to say thanks to him for the incredible three years and all that he gave us over the last three seasons. I want to wish him the best for the future of his career."

Erik Eggens, Yamaha Motor Europe MX Racing Manager: "It's a real pity to end the season like this, for Benoit, the team and Yamaha. It was clear to see that everything was going well for Benoit especially after he took his first win not so long ago at the MXGP in Switzerland. His speed was evident, as was his skill and talent. He is currently third in the MX2 World Championship although it is unlikely that he will end in this position after this news. His end result now won't reflect his speed and ability, but now the most important thing for Benoit is to make a full recovery, especially with such a dangerous injury such as a lacerated liver. I am sure that once he has fully recovered that he will come back stronger than ever."

The Monster Energy MXGP of USA Rockets to a start at NASA

WW Motocross Park, Jacksonville (USA), 1 September 2017 - The Monster Energy MXGP of USA kicks off tomorrow morning but today the MXGP paddock took a trip South of Jacksonville to the NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Orlando.

Quite possibly the most unique media event of the year set the tone for the unique Monster Energy MXGP of USA where the Motocross World Champions will face off some of the top American riders.

The trip started with a drive along the Florida coast toward Cape Canaveral. The road trip brought along Suzuki World MXGP’s Arminas Jasikonis, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Stephen Rubini, HRC MX2’s Michele Cervellin, TM Factory Racing's Anton Gole and KTM Motocross Sports Director and former Motocross World Champion Joel Smets, in addition to representatives from the MXGP Paddock and international media.

All the guest started out the tour by sampling astronaut ice cream, which to the surprise of everyone tasted identical to real ice cream. Following a few welcome photos with the tour guide and the NASA globe, the riders and guests walked through the Rocket Garden on the way to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex where the attention turned to the space shuttle Atlantis, America’s 4th space shuttle and the last space shuttle to complete a mission.

The riders were treated to a presentation about the shuttle, its construction and purpose before seeing it first hand and taking photos with the craft. The media event wrapped up with the riders and guest interacting with displays, testing out a replica cockpit and space station, plus a trip down the Kennedy Space Center slide. All in all the riders and guests loved the lighthearted and fun event giving them a chance to unwind before this weekend’s action packed racing.

The 2017 Motocross of European Nations is good to go in Poland

(GDANSK) Poland, 1st September 2017 - Bikes and riders are revving up for the 2017 Motocross of European Nations held in Gdansk, Poland, one of the oldest Polish cities. With a history in Europe going back over a thousand years, Gdansk makes the perfect event host.

The city of Gdansk is located on the Baltic coast and it is the Polish maritime capital with a population of half a million bringing in many spectators to see the best European riders competing for national pride.

The Gdansk Circuit has been around since 2004 hosting numerous National, European Junior, Quad, and FIM World Sidecar Championships but It was in 2005 that the racetrack in Gdansk last hosted the Motocross of European Nations. Authorities of the city are very supportive of the motocross events, including the Major of Gdansk Mr. Pawel Adamowicz.

The Motocross of European Nations is composed of 3 classes, 250cc, 125cc and 85cc, and each team has four riders: one 250cc rider, one 125cc rider, and two 85cc riders. The teams are planned to be presented Saturday at 18:00 to fans and media but many eyes will be on reigning champions, Team Italy. The 2017 Italian team will led by Alberto Forato and Gianluca Facchetti.

Forato has been racing the EMX250 championship all season scoring a race win in France and sits third in the points championship. Meanwhile Facchetti was an EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing title contender before a crash took his chance away in Sweden plus he took the 2017 125cc Junior World Champion title with impressive double victories.

Rounding out the team is the two 85cc riders of Pietro Razzini and Andrea Roncoli Plus the strong women’s team of 4 time Women’s Motocross World Champion Kiara Fontanesi who is also a 2017 title contender and Francesca Nocera who is in the top ten of the 2017 championship.

Other top riders to watch for are EMX250 riders France’s Mathys Boisrame and Latvia’s Karlis Sabulis plus 125cc rider Mikkel Harrup from Team Denmark. Boisrame has shown serious speed so far this season in EMX250 with 2 race wins and 1 overall. The Frenchman missed the early part of the season but he has come back with a vengeance and holds down 9th in the point even with 3 scoreless rounds. Sabulis has also had top 5 results in EMX250 but missed the middle of the season. Coming back not long ago he will be looking to prove that he is still fit and ready to compete. The 125cc rider from Denmark, Mikkel Harrup, is a likely winner of his division. Harrup has taken 7 EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing race wins this season including 3 overall wins via a 1-1 score.

A combined 16 nations will head to the starting gate this weekend on the track of Gdansk each with the goal of winning the 2017 MXoEN crown and in addition the 2017 Women’s Motocross of European Nations will also take place.
