MXGP is across the Atlantic and into the USA

WW Motocross Park, Jacksonville (USA), 30 August 2017 - MXGP is ready for the 17th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship as it crosses the Atlantic in a visit to the United States and the sunshine state of Florida. The Monster Energy MXGP of USA will take place this weekend, 2nd and 3rd September at the WW Motocross Park in Jacksonville, Florida for the first time ever.

The circuit known as the best in Florida is ready and excited to host its first world class event. The 1,675 meter track was built by Dream Traxx on 149 acres and opened November 2013. While Florida has a long motocross history, WW Motocross park is ready to make its own this weekend.

Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli has claimed 8 World Championships in career and his 9th is reachable this weekend. Cairoli has a 101 point advantage on MXGP rookie and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing teammate Jeffrey Herlings.

All that is need from Cairoli this weekend is to place better than Herlings in the overall standings and he will secure his 9th title. Herlings does however come off a triumphant first American motocross appearance in the MXGP off weekend and he won the MX2 at the 2016 Monster Energy MXGP of USA. The pair will be joined by not only their weekly advisories but also the newly crowned American Motocross Champion, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Eli Tomac, who is also the winner of the last Monster Energy MXGP of USA at Glen Helen in 2016 and the Monster Energy MXGP of Americas.

Tomac’s World Championship counterpart Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle is 4rd in the MXGP championship. Statistically either Desalle or 3rd place holder Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin could still win the title but the odds are against then as they essentially would need Herlings and Cairoli to have multiple scoreless races. Nevertheless both are always hard charger and potential overall winners.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser may be out the championship chase but the 2016 champ is looking to take the momentum of his last overall win in Sweden with him into the US. Now 178 points off the lead Gajser is simply searching for race wins and a strong finish to the season.

While the American rider Monster Energy Yamalube Chaparall Factory Yamaha’s Cooper Webb’s last world championship race was in MX2 at the Monster Energy MXGP of Americas where he took the overall, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre, the 2015 MXGP Champion, has had a challenging season but made a return to the podium at the MXGP of Sweden, his first in 2017. Febvre who won the MXGP of USA in 2015 is striving to stand on the box once again.

MXGP Championship Top Ten: 1. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 631 points; 2. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 530 p.; 3. Gautier Paulin (FRA, HUS), 526 p.; 4. Clement Desalle (BEL, KAW), 519 p.; 5. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 453 p.; 6. Romain Febvre (FRA, YAM), 441 p.; 7. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 377 p.; 8. Maximilian Nagl (GER, HUS), 364 p.; 9. Glenn Coldenhoff (NED, KTM), 352 p.; 10. Evgeny Bobryshev (RUS, HON), 344 p.

  2. Antonio Cairoli
  3. Tim Gajser

In MX2 points leader Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass is still fighting Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer for the title. Seewer won the last stop 2 weeks ago in Sweden but will need some luck to recover from his points deficit if he wants to claim the MX2 World Championship.

American MX2 riders Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei and Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington will be ones to keep an eye on at was it the only home GP this season. Both Sanayei and Covington were impressive at the last MXGP in Sweden. The pair of world championship riders will be joined by fellow American motocross racers from the Monster Energy Kawasaki Pro Circuit Racing team Justin Hill, Adam Cianciarulo, and Joey Savatgy.

Frenchman and Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team’s Benoit Paturel holds down third in the Championship and is not one to underestimate, especially if he can get solid starts. It is also important to not forget that this is the first of his final few races in MX2.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Kjer Olsen continues his strong rookie season sitting fourth in the championship only 7 points back of Paturel. Olsen hasn’t seen the same success as earlier in the season lately but perhaps this trip across the Atlantic may inspire another top result.

The final rider to mention is LRT KTM’s Julien Lieber, the Belgian has struggled the last rounds with crashes but was running well before each. Signed to the Monster Energy Kawasaki MXGP team for 2018 his future is bright but right now he remains focused on the task at hand, this weekend Monster Energy MXGP of USA.

MX2 Championship Top Ten: 1. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), 669 points; 2. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, SUZ), 624 p.; 3. Benoit Paturel (FRA, YAM), 504 p.; 4. Thomas Kjer Olsen (DEN, HUS), 497 p.; 5. American interest in MXGP of USA

In just a few days’ time, the MXGP riders will get the chance to race on American soil, at the Monster Energy MXGP of USA. Always a pleasure racing in America, it brings a new challenge, as they will not only race against the regular MXGP guys, but also a long list of the best based American riders.

There is one thing that is on everyone’s minds this week and it is the fantastic performance of Jeffrey Herlings last week. Herlings went to race in US and went 1-1, riding so fast and showing the American fans what a talent he is.

Now a week later, the American fans will make sure they get a second chance to witness the fastest motocross riders in the world, all going up against the American heroes at home. Tomac knows that with the pressure off from his championship winning weekend (last weekend) that he will be able to concentrate more on the racing, rather than the points.

“I am ready,” Tomac said. “Heck yes. I am excited to race everyone. It’s a level playing field with a brand-new track that nobody has ridden and seen, and I am excited for it really.”

While Tomac, Cooper Webb and Justin Barcia will hold up the fort for America in the MXGP class, there are also a bunch of good American riders racing the MX2 class, including red hot Kawasaki rider, Adam Cianciarulo. The Pro Circuit Kawasaki man won an overall in his own championship two weeks ago, and wants to battle the best MX2 riders in the world.

“Yeah, absolutely” Cianciarulo said. “I’m always up for new challenges and I think to be able to race with the GP guys will be interesting. Those guys are no joke at all. There is a lot of talent there and we say that this weekend with Jeffrey Herlings and it’s the same thing in the MX2 class.

“I think a lot of the U.S. riders follow that series pretty closely and I think you’re always kind of wondering where you would match up with those guys. It’s going to be exciting for those guys to come over here. And for it to be in my home state and to get the chance to kind of gauge myself against the best riders in the world, I think it’ll be fun and a new challenge for me and something that excites me, for sure.”

Another interesting fact is that last year’s AMA 250 champion and regular Team USA rider, Cooper Webb will be able to race the Grand Prix riders one more time, and he will be aboard a brand new 2018 Yamaha YZ450F. Something he is very excited about.

So, make sure you have booked your tickets, and hotels, because this year’s Monster Energy MXGP of USA is going to see some of the best racing of the season, and that is saying something.

USGP – Legends Opinion

While the current heroes of our sport arrive in America in a week’s time for the Monster Energy MXGP of USA, set for the WW Ranch in Florida, two wily old legends will be watching from the side-lines.

World MXGP champion Tim Gajser will lead the way, as will MX2 world champion Jeffrey Herlings and multiple world champion Antonio Cairoli. The very best of the FIM Motocross World Championships going up against the American riders, in their own country.

Two Belgian legends, Stefan Everts and Joel Smets led the European charge against the American rider’s time and time again in the 1990s and early 2000s. While they have long retired, they still remain involved in the sport, Everts as owner of the Suzuki Factory effort and Smets working inside the Red Bull KTM Factory team as adviser to the riders.

For Everts a GP victory came in 1993 at the Budds Creek circuit was a highlight, but he always loved battling the likes of Jeremy McGrath, Jeff Stanton, and Jeff Emig.

“It was always cool,” Everts said. “Especially in the 1990s with a lot of American riders on the start line. My first one was at Budds Creek, which I won. It was the first time in 10 years that a European rider had won the USGP and I was the one after Kees Van der Ven (who won the USGP in 1982). I went a couple of times to Budds Creek to do the Grand Prix. And the last years we had Glen Helen and the Motocross of Nations in Colorado and Budds Creek. Glen Helen, besides the track, we didn’t have much of a turn-out. It is becoming tough the last years to have a good event in the USA. Let’s hope this year, moving to another location will help, and we will see.

For Smets, just like with Everts the challenge of racing the American riders was always a highlight in his career. While he often had a championship on his mind, the fight with the AMA riders was special for him.

“It gives it more suspense and more attractive if the American riders are riding. That is why the Motocross of Nations is, how can I say it, it’s a big part of the spectacle and makes it more interesting. It makes it more interesting when the American boys are there and riding without them isn’t the thing to do. I would be lying if I said it wasn’t important, of course it was, but if also depended in what time of the year it was. You always had your own championship in the back of your mind, and for them (at the USGP), it’s a one-off event you could say. That makes it harder or more difficult, but still in the back of your mind you don’t want to be beaten big time.”

Now these two warriors will be watching, hoping that riders like Jeffrey Herlings, Antonio Cairoli and Tim Gajser can battle with the likes of Eli Tomac, Cooper Webb and Justin Barcia. For the riders themselves, the chance to race against riders they don’t usually compete again will give a lot of motivation.

Team USA – The Riders Talk

When Team USA was announced for the 2017 Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations, there were a lot of excited Grand Prix fans, and in fact fans worldwide who looked at this team as a very solid team, with a lot of experience.

Of course Zach Osborne, who will be team captain, and has raced the FIM Motocross World Championship throughout his career will be the main-stay of the team, and the AMA 250 motocross champion can’t wait to get together with his team-mates and work on a strategy to take the Chamberlain trophy back home to America.

“To be part of this team has been a career-long dream of mine and to be chosen in a season where I’m on top form is ideal. I have big goals for the race and I hope to make a statement for the team. It’s an honour to be selected team Captain, and I hope to share my enthusiasm and knowledge of world motocross with my team mates. We have a team of people who are proud to be representing and are prepared to do the work needed to be on top form. I think that the European fans will be anxious to see where the Americans can stack up. I think a lot of people are underestimating what the three of us are capable of, but, to me, this is a dream team because we are all enthusiastic and we are all competing for Team USA for the first time.

Cole Seely, who rides for the HRC Factory team in America found out he would be racing for Team USA while playing golf. A number of calls and it was confirmed he would be wearing the red, white and blue for his country.

“It came about, about two or three weeks ago, right after Washougal I think. We were just stepping off the track and I got the call. It was Dan [Betley]—my team manager—and it was a pretty easy answer. Obviously, I want to go. I’ve been wanting to go for years. I just said yes! It wasn’t a for sure thing yet, but I was super hopeful. I got a call—I actually got a missed call—from Roger [Decoster]. (laughs) I was on the golf course, and he called and left a message that I had been chosen. It was kind of hard to focus on my swing after that. I don’t ever really think that kind of stuff is going to happen to me, so I was beyond excited.”

Seely who seems like a down to earth guy, saw a dream come true and he will be giving it everything he has to help Team USA win the most prestigious event in world motocross.

“I’ve just never taken anything for granted and everything that’s been put in front of me I’m super thankful of. I can never say, 'I’ve only dreamed of this.' Hard work and dedication really. Having the right people in my corner is the biggest thing I think. My mechanic Rich [Simmons] has been with me since 2009. Shoot, almost a decade. He’s really helped me with my entire program and making sure I’m on track. He’s kind of been like an older brother to me. It’s just people like that in my corner pushing me in the right direction.”

Of course the third rider in Team USA is Grand Prix specialist, Thomas Covington, and like Seely and Osborne, it’s something he has hoped for his whole racing career.

"It’s not easy for one country to have three solid guys and I think we have that. We are not superstars. Zach is clearly on it, and Cole did well this weekend at Unadilla, and I have been riding well. I am coming into my own also. We have a solid team and why not go for the win. I haven’t talked to Cole at all, but I have with Zach, in fact he sent me a message after Lommel and said I was killing it, this was before I knew I would be on the team, he said he knew how bad that place sucked. A few days later, he was like, dude, are you stoked. We just talk back and forth, it’s going to be fun, and we think we have a shot to win it and it’s a cool team.”

Now with six weeks before the event kicks off at Matterley Basin in England, the team will have the chance to get to know each other better, and prepare for what would be a surprise, but very rewarding victory.
