Febvre & Covington set the TAG Heuer Best Laps in Sweden

TAG Heuer has been the official timekeeper of the FIM Motocross World Championship since 2014 and together with MXGP are running a fastest lap competition across the season, with the #DontCrackUnderpressure spirit.

The rider that has set the fastest lap at the most rounds throughout the season in MXGP and MX2 classes, and has the most points, will be awarded.

At the MXGP of Sweden which was held in Uddevalla on August the 10th and 20thMonster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre set the Tag Heuer Fastest Lap in MXGP Class Race 2 and he wins the first race of 2017 while in MX2 Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington who set the best lap at the last lap winning the Race 2 ahead of Suzuki World MXG2’s Jeremy Seewer.

Gajser and Seewer find Success in Sweden

(UDDEVALLA) Sweden, 20 August 2017 - The historic Uddevalla circuit hosted the 16th round of the 2017 FIM Motocross World Championship today against the backdrop of thousands of fans on the hills surrounding the track. Finding Swedish success was Team HRC Tim Gajser and Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer. In addition to the demanding circuit the changing weather conditions challenged riders and teams alike from goggle to tire choice.

Team HRC’s Tim Gajser had missed the podium for several rounds before last weekend and today he not only found the podium but did one better when he took the overall with 1-2 finishes. The reigning champion started race in the top 5 while his HRC teammate Evgeny Bobryshev took the Fox Holeshot.

While Bobryshev lost the lead quickly to Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre, Gajser took third away from Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Gautier Paulin.

Gajser and Bobryshev battled shortly but Gajser made it by the Russian along with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Glenn Coldenhoff. Leading the GP that he won in the last visit Febvre made a mistake and fell out of the lead and remounting in 12th.

While Gajser, Coldenhoff, Bobryshev, and Paulin where battling up front, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli was back in 15th and his title rival, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings, was 6th chasing down Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Clement Desalle.

On lap 4 Bobryshev lost 3rd to Paulin and 5 laps later lost 4th to Herlings who had finally found a way around Desalle. Herlings and Paulin both passed Coldenhoff and then Bobryshev did the same. One lap later Herlings took over second from Paulin.

On the last lap a mistake dropped Bobryshev from 4th to 7th letting Coldenhoff back into the top five. At the finish Gajser beat out Herlings by over 9 seconds with Paulin 3rd then Desalle, Coldenhoff, and Febvre who worked his way back from 12th to finish 6th.

Race 2 started similar but with a Holeshot for Febvre just ahead of Herlings, Gajser, and Paulin. Gajser passed Herlings quickly but a few laps later a mistake of Gajser let the Dutchman through.

Herlings while charging toward the leader Febvre had a bike issue which immediately ended his race. Gajser retook 2nd position and set his sights on the #461. The Slovenian and the Frenchman battled for several laps coming extremely close at times.

Behind the front two was Paulin in a race of his own well ahead of Desalle and Coldenhoff. Cairoli struggled again in race 2 starting in 9th and only making his way to 7th by the finish. At the checkered flag Febvre won the race ahead of Gajser to secure second while the HRC rider took the overall win.

Romain Febvre in the press conference said: “I am really happy, it has been a tough season for me. We finally made a good step forward and we can start at the front. I finally got on the podium this weekend after I finished 4th I think three times so it is good.”

Tim Gajser’s win was his third this season but the first since Leon 12 rounds prior. Gajser in the press conference said: “It feels amazing to be back after quite a long time, we have been working really hard, we had some bad weekends and some bad races but we are now getting better and better. I am really happy, really glad and I just want to say thank to everyone.”

Gautier Paulin's pair of thirds took third overall to which he said: “It is always good to be on the box, I made a few mistakes and the first race I had good start. I’m feeling 100% right now.”

Antonio Cairoli though finishing 7th overall gained points in the championship and in the post race press conference he said: “I’m really happy about the result, for sure today it could be better on the track which was very difficult with a lot of ruts but the competition is very high.”

Team Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer came into the MXGP of Sweden only one week after missing out on winning his home GP and while the competition was tough he managed to take the overall with 2-2 results.

When MX2 race 1 started Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jorge Prado Garcia took the FOX Holeshot just beating out Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Darian Sanayei. Sanayei held second only for the first two corners though as LRT KTM’s Julien Lieber took the spot.

The two title contenders Seewer and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Pauls Jonass start 4th and 7th but by the end of the first lap where in 3rd and 5th respectively. Behind Seewer and in front of Jonass was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing's Conrad Mewse. Mewse managed to hold off the points leader for the first laps before losing the position.

As Prado ran away with the lead Seewer pushed to reach Lieber but fell in a corner and he picked up just ahead of Jonass nearly being passed. Lieber then made a mistake, fell out of second, and remounted in 4th before making more errors and dropping to 13th.

At the finish it was Prado winning by just under 2 seconds then Jonass 28 seconds back of the lead. Conrad Mewse held on to finish 4th and HSF Motorsport Team’s Brian Bogers took 5th.

Race 2 had an identical Fox holeshot taken by Prado, his 14th this season. Behind Prado was his teammate Jonass then Rockstar Energy Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington and Seewer. Covington passed Jonass on the open corner and when Jonass retaliated it slowed the pair enough to not only let Seewer by but also his Suzuki World MX2 teammate Hunter Lawrence.

Throughout it all Covington maintained his position ahead of Jonass and Seewer went after Prado. On lap 5 Seewer took over the lead and one lap later Lawrence and Covington passed Prado as well. The Spaniard was then left to fend off his teammate who made a quick and decisive move to take the spot away.

Meanwhile Lawrence crashed out of second and remounted in 6th leaving Seewer to deal with Covington on his own. Covington's Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing teammate Thomas Kjer Olsen was also making moves passing Prado and pressuring Jonass.

On the last lap Covington showed amazing speed and caught Seewer leaping past the Swiss rider into the last corner to end the race in a photo finish. Covington took the race win to the disappointment of Seewer.

In the overall Seewer took the win, the 5th of his career and season. In the press conference Seewer said: “I am really happy to win a GP even if I got passed in the last corner in the second race. I am still happy to win the GP, I had so much fun riding on the bike this weekend and just enjoyed being out there racing.”

Jorge Prado took second after a hard fought 5th in race 2 for his 4th podium this season to which he said: “It was pretty good, in the first race I got the Fox Holeshot and I could lead the whole race so that was a perfect race and in the second race I struggled a bit more but anyway I came second overall so I’m pretty happy.”

Pauls Jonass scored valuable points but the gap has now dropped to 45 between him and Seewer. Jonass in the press conference said: “I still got pretty decent points this weekend again twice third and then again 3rd on the podium. I didn’t ride my best races but still 40 points is good for the championship and now I’m just looking forward to the next GP.”

MXGP of Sweden Opens with a tip of the hat to Håkan Carlqvist

To open the MXGP of Sweden the riders, paddock, and fans payed tribute to the late Swedish Motocross Hero Håkan “Carla” Carlqvist with a minute of silence. In addition to the minute of silence a motocross race named the Carla Memorial Race 2017 will take place Saturday, September 9th at the Barkarby Motorstadium to remember the Swedish Legend. The free event will host Carlqvist’s Husqvarna 250cc from his 1979 World Cup along with the first ever showing of his 1983 World Championship winning Yamaha 500cc.

Before the moment of silence an airshow took to the skies above the Uddevalla circuit. The show was performed by a C130 Hercules, a Swedish Air Force transport plane. Soon after the opening display of aerial power and precision the riders of MX2 and MXGP took to the track.

Herlings and Jonass Take Pole in Sweden

(UDDEVALLA) Sweden, 19 August 2017 - From sun to rain and back the MXGP of Sweden kicked off today with Qualifying at the long time GP circuit of Uddevalla. Returning after a year away the rumble of MXGP and MX2 brought the circuit and Swedish fans to life as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings and Pauls Jonass took the first victories of the weekend.

In addition to MXGP and MX2 Saturday’s racing included the first day of EMX125 Presented by FMF Racing where BUD Racing Monster Energy’s Brian Strubhart Moreau won the race and claim the 2017 championship. Moreau came into the weekend with the championship lead and the deciding moment came when his nearest competitor, Gianluca Facchetti crashed out of the race on the start.

When the MXGP Qualifying Race’s gate dropped the winner of the last MXGP race to be held in Uddevalla, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre, took the lead.

Febvre was followed closely by Team HRC MXGP’s Tim Gajser but later managed to pull a slight gap on the #243. Behind the top two off the start was Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl and Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings.

Herlings found his way around Nagl on the first lap putting the German between him and points leader Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. Herlings then pushed forward to catch Gajser and apply pressure on the Slovenian.

Gajser managed to handle the pressure well however even when Herlings showed him the front wheel multiple times. Herlings was searching side to side looking for a way past and for a few laps backed off the pace.

Herlings after following the lines of Gajser regroup and mounted a second attack and this one was successful. After his pass on Gajser, Herlings set his sights on Febvre and with 2 laps remaining he took the lead. Febvre tried to retaliate but it wouldn’t be enough as Herlings won ahead of Febvre, Gajser, Nagl, and Cairoli.

Herlings in the press conference said, “I’m feeling good, we were fast in each practice and I felt really comfortable today, the bike has been really well including the last few rounds. It was a bit hard to pass Gajser, he was riding really good and had some really good lines, he was tough to overtake but once we passed him I was able to close the gap to Febvre and pass him straight when I got near his rear wheel and managed to win.”

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 24:01.339; 2. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:00.709; 3. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:07.522; 4. Maximilian Nagl (GER, Husqvarna), +0:09.369; 5. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:10.762; 6. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Husqvarna), +0:22.883; 7. Clement Desalle (BEL, Kawasaki), +0:26.080; 8. When the MX2 bikes shot out of the gates it was again the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s pair of Jorge Prado Garcia and Pauls Jonass leading the way.

Behind the KTMs it was the Americans, Rockstar Energy Factory Racing’s Thomas Covington and Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki rider Darian Sanayei. For Covington the top five position was lost quickly as he crashed on the first lap.

The same bad luck struck the #61 of Prado on the second lap when he fell just ahead of his teammate Jonass. Jonass was lucky to miss Prado but somehow managed to do so and from there took the lead.

The TM Racing Factory Team and Swedish Rider Anton Gole came out swinging and ran 4th on the first official lap before dropping spots to Kemea Yamaha Official MX Team’s Benoit Paturel and Suzuki World MX2’s Jeremy Seewer.

After passing Gole, last GP’s overall winner, Paturel started an attempt to charge to the front. After running in 4th for 6 laps the #6 and Rockstar Energy Factory Racing’s Conrad Mewse where both passed by a surging Seewer and only one lap later Paturel found his way around Mewse.

With Jonass out of reach Seewer changed his focus to passing Sanayei and he did so on the final lap with only two turns remaining. Jonass won the race with Seewer, Sanayei, Paturel, and Mewse finishing out the top five.

Jonass in the press conference said: “I got a pretty start straight away I was second behind my teammate and the first few laps we were riding pretty close…but then he made a mistake and I was lucky not to crash with him. I didn’t ride my best race but still managed to win. It is a good confidence boost to win the qualifying race and I’m really looking forward to tomorrow.”

Meanwhile Gole finished 12th and fellow Swedish rider, Kemea Yamaha Official MX Teams Alvin Ostlund finished 16th. Ostlund after the race said: “It is really nice to be home, there is a lot of fans cheering for you and it gives you a little bit extra motivation. I think to be home with the fans can help and my goal is to finish in the top ten tomorrow.”
