Fontanesi swaps knobbles for slicks

It doesn’t matter what it is, if it has an engine and two wheels, she wants to ride it. Our very own three-time FIM Women’s Motocross World Champion Kiara Fontanesi has recently been dipping her toes into the world of road racing. After swinging a leg over a Yamaha R6 last year, Kiara decided to bite the bullet and line up at a road race for the first time in her career at the Trofeo Motoestate race in Varano, Italy.

Kiara competed in the Motodiserie 600 where she managed to finish 16th and in Race Attack where she finished 13th overall. Being the only female on the line, results weren’t important to the audacious Italian. Her main goal was to embrace the challenge which was automatically satisfying as she became one of the only motorcyclists in history to race both disciplines, motocross and road racing.

“I started very well and I kept a good rhythm during the races”, the WMX world champion said after the race, “I enjoyed especially the Motodiserie. I want to thank you everybody who supported me, all of my friends and fans who came to Varano to watch. It was a fantastic experience, but now it’s the time to go back to the motocross.”

Lancelot and Fontanesi lock down wins in Loket

LOKET (Czech Republic), 27 July 2014 – The 2014 FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship has been a nail biter all season long with the sixth and final round here at the historic circuit of Loket providing just as much pandemonium as the rounds before. While Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot won the battle this weekend, rounding off her season on top of the box, it was Yamaha MXFonta Racing’s Kiara Fontanesi who won the war claiming her third consecutive FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship gold plate.

Leading the way by a miniscule four points into race one yesterday Yamaha MXFonta Racing’s Kiara Fontanesi came out all guns blazing. Not even a bad start could slow down the defending champion as she went on to dominate the penultimate race of the season ahead of archrival Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge and Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot.

In race two this morning, reaction speed was on point this weekend for Suzuki rider Francessca Nocera who hauled out of the gate to take her second holeshot here in Loket. Sneaking up the inside of the Italian around turn one to pull across and take the line away, rookie Nancy Van De Ven snatched the early lead. With Van De Ven blocking Nocera into turn two, the door was left wide open for the likes of Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot and Team Dragon Moto’s Stephanie Laier to follow through.

While Van De Ven, who was sporting a four stroke for the first time this season, was left with the 2008 FIM Women’s Motocross World Champion Lancelot breathing down her neck, the hottest title contenders Yamaha MXFonta Racing’s Kiara Fontanesi and Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge were hustling from outside the top ten.

Before the end of lap one Lancelot carried more momentum through the waves to go around the outside of the hard charging Van De Ven and take over the lead only to lose it less than half a lap later when she washed out her front end on a slick corner at the bottom of the circuit.

Meanwhile both Rutledge and Fontanesi were on the ‘slice and dice’ as they had both chopped through the field and tagged onto the back of the leader young Nancy Van De Ven.

With Lancelot scrambling back to the front of the pack around mid-race, intensity levels hit the roof with four riders right in the thick of a possible race win. Not only was a WMX round win up for grabs, the championship was too with only seven points separating Fontanesi and Rutledge. At one point in the race, Rutledge led Van De Ven who was under the attack of Fontanesi who was also preoccupied with trying to hold off a prying Lancelot. When Lancelot found a way around the defending champion, the championship for Fontanesi was put in jeopardy, had it of finished in the order of Rutledge, Van De Ven, Lancelot, Fontanesi; Rutledge would have been crowned champion.

Fortunately for Fontanesi, all commotion was put to rest when Lancelot, a proven master of hilly, rocky, clay based circuits, decided she’d turn up the heat and charge past all three riders to run away with a convincing race win.

Rutledge held on for second while Fontanesi backed off the pace to secure third and wrap up the championship. Meanwhile Laier leapt past Van De Ven in the closing stages of the race to take fourth with Van De Ven being forced to settle for fifth.

While the WMX title was a long shot this weekend for Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot, she was the strongest rider in the second half of the season winning half of the final eight races with a winning performance here at the final round.

Yamaha MXFonta Racing’s Kiara Fontanesi celebrated her hat trick of WMX championship titles from the second step of the podium here in Loket while Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge, banker of the most round wins this season, defended her number two ranking with a pair of seconds for third.

Team Dragon Moto’s Stephanie Laier was fourth in both races for fourth overall for the day and for the championship, while Nancy Van De Ven did a similar thing taking two fifths for fifth as well as a world ranking of five.

Nagl, Febvre and Fontanesi Czech out!

LOKET (Czech Republic), 26 July 2014 - Levels of anticipation for MX2’s qualifying race gate drop couldn’t be any higher than they were today at round fourteen of the FIM Motocross World Championship. While the toasty weather was a factor, as was the tricky clay based circuit, all was masked by the excitement about which of the many capable race winners would shine in MX2 now that the reigning world champ and dominating force Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings is out with a broken femur.

The first to prove he’s ready to step up to the plate, Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre rode poised yet aggressive to secure his first ever pole position while in the premier class, Team HRC’s Max Nagl controlled the race from start to finish for his second MXGP pole this season.

Also adding to the commotion in the paddock, the sixth and final round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship kicked off with only four points separating the red plate holder and defending champion Team FontaMX Yamaha Racing’s Kiara Fontanesi and Bud Racing Kawasaki’s young Australian Meghan Rutledge. While the official champion will be crowned tomorrow, it was Fontanesi who stamped her authority today when she charged hard from outside the top five, spectacularly passing three riders in one fowl swoop to dominate the race and extend her points lead.

Meanwhile in the European Championship, Finland’s Jere Haavisto took his third EMX150 race win here at round four, while Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Brian Hsu took his third consecutive race win and fourth of the season here at round six of EMX125 championship and is now leading the championship by two over Red Bull KTM Racing’s Davy Pootjes.

MXGP

When the gates dropped for MXGP’s qualifying heat there was no one more fired up than Team HRC’s Max Nagl as he flew out of the gate to nab the holeshot off of Wilvo Forkrent KTM’s Mattis Karro.

While Nagl put his head down and started peeling off a bunch of solid laps, Karro got a little loose a quarter of a lap in which saw Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Clement Desalle pummel straight into him and go down. A few other guys got caught up in the Karro – Desalle debacle but none of those bikes were blue with a trio of Yamahas’ emerging from the dust.

Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek led the train of ‘Yams’ with BikeIT Yamaha Cosworths Rui Goncalves and Team 2B Yamaha’s Milko Potisek following closely behind. While Goncalves dug deep to hold onto Van Horebeek, Potisek was trying to fend off the typical MXGP front runners Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, and Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Kevin Strijbos who were both on the charge after banking less than average starts.

Despite starting from outside the top ten, Cairoli and Strijbos looked aggressive and determined out on the slick clay surface, barging their way through the field to eventually challenge Van Horebeek for second. While it appeared Cairoli could give Van Horebeek some grief with one lap to go, Van Horebeek refused to buckle under the pressure meaning he would hold on for second and force the reigning world champ to settle for third. Strijbos came home in a respectable fourth while Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Dean Ferris fought hard early in the race to reep the benefits of a comfortable fifth place finish.

MXGP Qualifying Race top ten: 1. Maximilian Nagl (GER, Honda), 24:31.104; 2. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:02.174; 3. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), +0:02.795; 4. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, Suzuki), +0:15.005; 5. Dean Ferris (AUS, Husqvarna), +0:26.113; 6. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), +0:29.192; 7. Milko Potisek (FRA, Yamaha), +0:32.601; 8. Rui Goncalves (POR, Yamaha), +0:34.163; 9. David Philippaerts (ITA, Yamaha), +0:37.165; 10. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:38.653.

MX2

It was a black Monday last week for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings who was more than likely going to wrap up his third FIM MX2 World Championship here in Loket. Although most would know the news by now, for those that don’t, the nineteen year old motocross extraordinaire crashed while racing an 85cc for charity in Genk, Belgium on Monday 21st July, breaking his femur clean in half which required immediate surgery.

With the Dutch prodigy sidelined and two hundred points still on the table, the MX2 world championship is back up for grabs, as is a first ever MX2 Grand Prix overall for the winner this weekend.

The first to take the pressure in his stride was Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre who chased the holeshot master KTM Silver Action’s Jose Burtón and Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Cedric Lieber around turn one. Febvre wasted no time in barging his way through to take over the lead before the end of lap one to ride a flawless race and take his first ever qualifying heat victory.

Meanwhile, Butrón did his typical early race charge showing he is capable of riding at the same speed as the front runners, when asked the reason behind his mid-race dilemmas, the Spaniard said he’s had a virus in his blood. Nevertheless he managed to hold on today for fourth after being passed by Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jordi Tixier who appeared disappointed to have finished second behind fellow Frenchman Febvre, and Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser who made some classy passes to move from outside the top five to finish third.

In the meantime Suzuki’s Cedric Lieber finally put a result on paper after show casing his true ability for fifth place and his best qualifying race finish this season. Also earning a special mention, the third of the fiery Frenchmen CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Dylan Ferrandis is looking like a solid bet for the win tomorrow after going down in turn one with Standing Construct KTM’s Valentin Guillod and charging all the way back to the front of the pack before crashing once again late in the race. Despite his struggles to keep the bike rubber side down, the youngster managed to come home in sixth ahead of Honda Jtech’s Russian Vsevolod Brylyakov who put in a very impressive ride for seventh.

MX2 Qualifying Race top ten: 1. Romain Febvre (FRA, Husqvarna), 24:43.121; 2. Jordi Tixier (FRA, KTM), +0:05.584; 3. Tim Gajser (SLO, Honda), +0:18.427; 4. Jose Butron (ESP, KTM), +0:20.962; 5. Julien Lieber (BEL, Suzuki), +0:22.420; 6. Dylan Ferrandis (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:23.141; 7. Vsevolod Brylyakov (RUS, Honda), +0:26.775; 8. Aleksandr Tonkov (RUS, Husqvarna), +0:28.026; 9. Valentin Guillod (SUI, KTM), +0:37.858; 10. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), +0:38.363.

Locked and loaded for Loket

LOKET (Czech Republic), 23 July 2014 – It has been a customary stop on the calendar of the FIM Motocross World Championship for the best part of the last ten years, with seven Grand Prix’ over that time period, the steep and choppy clay based terrain in Loket, Czech Republic, gets set to host round fourteen of the seventeen round MXGP series.

While the initial excitement heading into this weekend was the extremely high likelihood of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s teen-age sensation Jeffrey Herlings wrapping up his third consecutive FIM Motocross MX2 World Championship, everything has been thrown into turmoil with news breaking on Monday 21st of July that the Dutch talent had crashed play riding on a 85cc and broken his femur. KTM later announced that a pin had been surgically inserted into the youngsters left leg to secure the fracture and that the operation went smooth and was a success. Herlings tweeted the following day “It ain’t over until it is over. There is still a lot of hope and motivation, everything is still possible and it still looks positive”, just a glimpse of the attitude that has seen him go undefeated in every MX2 Grand Prix he has contested since late 2011.

Meanwhile, one champion will be crowned this weekend with it being the sixth and final round of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship, and it is more than likely to be either FontaMX Yamaha Racing’s Kiara Fontanesi or Bud Racing Kawasaki’s Meghan Rutledge who are separated by only four points.

For the red plate holder and defending champion Fontanesi, it will be a case of knuckling down and fighting hard, as she has gone on the record to say Loket is not one of her favorite tracks. Meanwhile the Australian Rutledge doesn’t care about what kind of track is thrown at her, she just wants to win and is clearly hungrier than ever.

Also heating up this weekend, the sixth round of the European Championships EMX125 is all set to take place with the series leader Red Bull KTM Racing’s Davy Pootjes, who leads Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Brian Hsu by seven, set to return after breaking his shoulder at the previous round back on June 22nd in Teutschenthal, Germany.

MXGP

It has not been the easiest season for Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli, but with four rounds to go and four from four victories in the last four races, the goal is in sight, all he has to do is take home some solid points this weekend to be well on his merry way to wrapping up FIM Motocross World title number eight.

Currently second in MXGP’s championship standings, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek trails the Italian by sixty-two points meaning his chances at winning the title are pretty slim. Van Horebeek has been taking this season round by round and still remains confident he can win a Grand Prix before the season is out. Given he is a fan of hard pack, slick surfaces with loads of elevation, and Cairoli is not, this weekend could be the weekend the young Belgian puts that Yamaha YZ450FM on top of the box.

The view is always best from the top, a sight Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s duo Kevin Strijbos and Clement Desalle are familiar with here in Loket. Strijbos has been victorious here on two occasions, once in 2005 and then again in 2007 while his teammate Desalle won here in 2009, 2011 and 2013. Both riders cannot be counted out this weekend, Strijbos in particular as he looks to promote himself from the third step of the podium which he has occupied six times already this season. Meanwhile, Desalle will be returning after sitting the last round out due to an injury from his first turn crash at MXGP of Sweden.

Another rider to return from injury this weekend, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Gautier Paulin will be back on the gate after his seven round hiatus, alongside his teammate Steven Frossard who at MXGP of Finland finally uncorked his first bottle of champagne since 2011.

MXGP World Championship Classification Top Ten: 1. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 577 points; 2. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, YAM), 515 p.; 3. Clement Desalle (BEL, SUZ), 470 p.; 4. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, SUZ), 424 p.; 5. Steven Frossard (FRA, KAW), 307 p.; 6. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), 296 p.; 7. Maximilian Nagl (GER, HON), 269 p.; 8. David Philippaerts (ITA, YAM), 234 p.; 9. Davide Guarneri (ITA, TM), 218 p.; 10. Gautier Paulin (FRA, KAW), 205 p.

MX2

There is no doubt the MX2 class is going to be ridiculously intense over the next four rounds of MXGP. Just like at Brazil this year and Belgium and Great Britain last year, the guys will line up genuinely believing they can win.

One of the most interesting factors this weekend is the fact that not one rider on the start line has won a Grand Prix. With CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Arnaud Tonus out with a broken shoulder and Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Glenn Coldenhoff still on the mend after having his knee reconstructed, a milestone for who wants it bad enough is within reach for everyone else.

Looking at the points, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jordi Tixier trails Herlings by 145. There is 200 points up for grabs if he was to win every remaining moto this season, which is not going to be easy with the likes of fellow Frenchmen Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre and CLS Kawasaki Monster Energy’s Dylan Ferrandis also chomping at the bit for their first ever Grand Prix win.

The title is also within reach for Febvre and Ferrandis, who sit third and fourth in the championship respectively, if they were to dramatically up their game. Febvre trails Herlings by 178, while Ferrandis trails by 191, given their records of consistency the title is pretty unlikely for both, although it has to be said that it is do-able.

Moving on, Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser cannot win the title even if he won every race from here on out but he can move up in the championship as he trails Ferrandis, who is in fourth, by thirteen points. It would also be cool to see the seventeen year old take his first ever MX2 win, an experience which would look good in the confidence bank as he sets his sights on an eventual MX2 world title.

Also lining up with the possibility of taking home their first ever MX2 Grand Prix win, Standing Construct KTM’s Valentin Guillod has been showing flashes of brilliance throughout the season even though it has only come together for the Swiss in qualifying so far, while KTM Silver Action’s Jose Butrón and Yamaha Factory Racing’s Christophe Charlier need to be making the most of their final MX2 races as both will be forced up to MXGP next year.

If the entire season is taken into consideration for those who will race this weekend, none of the results in the MX2 world championship are set in stone with not one rider being a lot more consistent than the other, and not to mention they’re contesting a sport in which ANYTHING can happen, a fact that was reiterated by Jeffrey Herlings on Monday morning.

MX2 World Championship Classification Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 594 points; 2. Jordi Tixier (FRA, KTM), 449 p.; 3. Romain Febvre (FRA, HUS), 416 p.; 4. Dylan Ferrandis (FRA, KAW), 403 p.; 5. Tim Gajser (SLO, HON), 390 p.; 6. Arnaud Tonus (SUI, KAW), 389 p.; 7. Valentin Guillod (SUI, KTM), 314 p.; 8. Aleksandr Tonkov (RUS, HUS), 308 p.; 9. Youthstream presents the Donjoy Physio Center

FUNCHAL (Portugal), 11 July 2014 – Youthstream is pleased to announce Donjoy has recently opened a physiotherapy center which is present in the paddock at every European round of MXGP.

Donjoy has been supporting FIM Motocross World Championship riders since 2008. The company DJO Global, who is specialized in orthepedics, have been supporting   riders such as Antonio Cairoli, Steven Frossard, Rui Goncalves, Jose Butron and Livia Lancelot to name a few, with the Donjoy kneebraces and helped them with recovery and pain relief through Compex electronical muscle stimulation.

As a further investment in the Mobile Medical Clinic Project, Youthstream initiated the idea of Donjoy joining forces with the Mobile Medical Clinic to form a onsite physiotherapy center available at all European rounds of MXGP for free of charge.

After the agreement of collaboration between Youthstream, Donjoy and the Mobile Medical Clinic, the paddock of MXGP will now have the ultimate medical facility. The Mobile Medical Clinic is equipped with echographie and X-Ray machines to diagnose injuries while the Donjoy Physio Center provides physiotherapists and the use of their PT material, Compex electronical muscle stimulation and ice machines. The staff representing Donjoy, who are specialized in Compex treatments taping, sports physiotherapy and massage, is available since the MXGP of Spain to all riders, team members, media representitives and the rest of the population free of charge.

The Donjoy Physio Center, headed by Thierry Sarasyn with permenant physiotherapist Annick Dellaert, is located inside the Mobile Medical Clinic outer area.
