Cairoli and Herlings go wide open at the opener

LOSAIL (Qatar), 27 February 2015 – Mud, speed and intensity are three important elements to a good race. Throw in at least twenty of the world’s best MXGP riders and another handful or two of mega talented MX2 riders, with the addition of an amazing floodlit track surrounded by impeccable facilities and you’ll have one of the best off-road sporting events the world has ever seen. You’ll also have something that simulates the season opener to the 2015 FIM Motocross World Championship which took place last night at the amazing man-made motocross circuit of Losail, Qatar, where Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings both took pole.

Also putting in some laps out here last night, the women of the FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship had two sessions where the defending three time FIM WMX World Champion Kiara Fontanesi was the fastest with Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot and young Dutch girl Nancy Van de Ven rounding out the top three.

When the gates dropped for MXGP’s first qualifying heat of the year, everyone was on their toes yearning the race that was about to unfold. The anticipation was immense but it soon diminished when the eight-time FIM Motocross World Champion Antonio Cairoli took the holeshot and checked out.

With Cairoli getting comfortable right off the bat in the last position his opposition would want him in, the race for second was unfurling. Red Bull IceOne Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Max Nagl was boasting an all-new aggressive style, which appeared to be working in his favor for at least half of the race as he tried to maintain second in the wake of Cairoli.

Eventually the previous MXGP of Qatar winners, Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Clement Desalle and Team HRC’s Gautier Paulin found their turbo buttons and made a run at Nagl. While the German, Nagl, tried to match the pace it would appear he was a little caught off guard as both Desalle and Paulin blitzed past him.

With Nagl dropping back to fourth a few seconds clear of Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Kevin Strijbos in fifth, the duo of Desalle and Paulin went at it. Desalle, who was the fastest rider of the race began to chomp away at Cairoli’s lead, but Cairoli being as clever as he is, had it all under control and cruised home for a relatively comfortable win.

Desalle sealed the deal on second while Paulin looked good in third. Nagl and Strijbos rounded out the top five with Yamaha Factory Racing’s young rookie Romain Febvre putting in an impressive performance for sixth.

Hitachi Construction Machinery Revo KTM’s Shaun Simpson nursed his smoking privateer machine home for seventh, while the guy we have all been dying to see, Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Ryan Villopoto made life tough for himself after a mediocre start left him bar bashing through the pack. The American also went down early in the race while trying to find some new lines, but made a good come back to finish hot on the heels of Simpson in eighth.

MXGP Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Antonio Cairoli (ITA, KTM), 23:57.028; 2. Clement Desalle (BEL, Suzuki), +0:04.946; 3. Gautier Paulin (FRA, Honda), +0:07.150; 4. Maximilian Nagl (GER, Husqvarna), +0:12.479; 5. Kevin Strijbos (BEL, Suzuki), +0:16.261; 6. Romain Febvre (FRA, Yamaha), +0:26.411; 7. Shaun Simpson (GBR, KTM), +0:32.424; 8. Ryan Villopoto (USA, Kawasaki), +0:33.693; 9. Jeremy Van Horebeek (BEL, Yamaha), +0:43.779; 10. Todd Waters (AUS, Husqvarna), +0:48.825

Could the first MX2 race of the year be a sign of how the championship might play out? When the gates smashed to the ground for the under 23’s first qualifying race of the season it was the young guns who were most eager. Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s latest prodigy Pauls Jonass bought the confidence from his phenomenal pre-season to the line and nailed the holeshot followed by Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s young American Thomas Covington.

Chasing the surprise leaders, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings made life a little easier with a decent start in fourth behind Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Jordi Tixier. A little nudge around turn four shifted Herlings up to third and left Tixier on the deck and outside of the top twenty.

As Tixier went to war in attempt to bounce back, Covington started to creep up on the Latvian, Jonass. It was hard to tell if Jonass was feeling the pressure or not, but either way he made a simple error at the end of pitlane and lost the front which dropped him back to fifth.

With Covington taking the reigns of the race, a much calmer Herlings rode cool and collective in second. Meanwhile with five minutes plus two laps to go, Covington’s Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team teammate Dylan Ferrandis started to hustle making the closing stages of the race a three-way for the win.

One-lap to go and a kid who resembled ‘the real’ Jeffrey Herlings showed up and pinned it up the inside of Covington to take over the lead. Covington, who admittedly wanted to fight for the win, couldn’t respond but managed to hold off his teammate for an impressive second. With Ferrandis being forced to settle for third, Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Aleksandr Tonkov rode a lonely race in fourth while Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki Racing’s Max Anstie made a late race pass on Jonass to round out the top five.

The defending FIM MX2 World Champion Jordi Tixier managed to charge his way back through the pack for eighth.

MX2 Qualifying Race Top Ten: 1. Jeffrey Herlings (NED, KTM), 24:28.446; 2. Thomas Covington (USA, Kawasaki), +0:01.375; 3. Dylan Ferrandis (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:02.747; 4. Aleksandr Tonkov (RUS, Husqvarna), +0:08.952; 5. Max Anstie (GBR, Kawasaki), +0:15.652; 6. Pauls Jonass (LAT, KTM), +0:18.887; 7. Julien Lieber (BEL, Yamaha), +0:26.010; 8. Jordi Tixier (FRA, Kawasaki), +0:33.476; 9. Damon Graulus (BEL, Yamaha), +0:38.039; 10. Jeremy Seewer (SUI, Suzuki), +0:44.011

Ride Quiet Campaign, YouthStream & FIM join forces to raise noise awareness

LOSAIL (Qatar), 27 February 2015 - As the 2015 FIM Motocross World Championship season is poised to start, Youthstream and FIM are pleased to launch a new campaign entitled “Ride Quiet!”.

The purpose of the campaign is to create awareness of the need to reduce sound levels. Based on the FIM’s sustainability policy, it is aimed at the FIM’s Continental Unions and National Federations and their members as well as the many amateur riders all over the world.

Very often, the sound produced by motorcycle activities can become a nuisance to people living nearby. This can lead to protest actions and eventually the closing of a circuit that has been there for many years. To avoid this, we need to ensure that our sport does not antagonise the local community!

Youthstream and FIM have produced a video clip with the participation of several top riders to encourage off-road riding and help to preserve it for future generations to enjoy. If we care about our sport, we must do what it takes to ensure that young riders can follow in the tyre tracks of their elders and heroes.

So if you are a motorcycle enthusiast, please join us and support this campaign on your social media and digital platforms.

Watch the video and Ride Quiet!

Losail set to set MXGP alight

LOSAIL (Qatar), 25 February 2015 – Silly season, off-season, pre-season, whatever you want to call it, those days are over. This weekend, Friday 27th and Saturday 28th, the gates of the FIM Motocross World Championship will smash to the ground as the onset to what is expected to be the greatest ever season of motocross, MXGP 2015.

Qatar always provides something special, which is why MXGP has returned here to open the championship for the third consecutive year. At first glance the track looks more or less the same, the only difference is some new soil has been added and a few alterations have been made to some of the corners. Learning from previous years, some of the lights have also been shifted to provide optimal vision for the riders who will be racing their one and only night event this season.

Also adding to the insane buzz surrounding the event here in Losail, the 2015 FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship will also kick off.

MXGP this year has without a doubt the deepest field of talent we have ever seen. So where do we start? Let’s start at the top with the man to beat, the eight-time FIM Motocross World Champion, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli. Tony, as he is known to his fans, is a smart rider, he knows championships are not won at the first round and is sure to ride calm and collective.

Monster Energy Kawasaki Racing Team’s Ryan Villopoto on the other hand could be a different story. Judging from his recent videos on social media and via other media sources, the guy looks to be on the gas! It is said that Villopoto won’t settle for anything less than a win, which we’re sure he is capable of but what we’re also sure of is that it won’t be easy.

One rider that could make life difficult for the reigning champions is last years round one winner, Gautier Paulin. The last time we saw Paulin let it rip was at the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations in Latvia where he was on fire and cleaned up the field. Now he has switched from Kawasaki to Honda’s factory squad, Team HRC, and is looking to keep that momentum going.

Meanwhile the vice world champion, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Jeremy Van Horebeek won’t be overlooked this year. With twelve podiums last year, from a possible seventeen, eleven of which were consecutive, a trophy from MXGP of Qatar is one of five that doesn’t sit on his shelf. That could be a little added motivation for the twenty-four year old Belgian.

Another Belgian to watch out for is Rockstar Energy Suzuki World MXGP’s Kevin Strijbos who qualified on pole here last year. Strijbos has upped his intensity over the winter and is looking stronger than ever, while his fellow teammate and countryman Clement Desalle is also capable of throwing red plates straight on his bike just as he did at MXGP of Qatar back in 2013.

While the guys listed above are some of the most popular bets to uncork the first three bottles of champagne this season, there is an abundance of others. Some names that quickly spring to mind are the rookies, Yamaha Factory Racing’s Romain Febvre who has been showing great form in the pre-season races, Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Glenn Coldenhoff, Team Assomotor Honda’s Alessandro Lupino and Marchetti Racing Team KTM’s Jose Butron. And then there are the likes of Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s duo of seasoned riders, Tommy Searle and Ken De Dycker, Team HRC’s Evgeny Bobryshev, TM Racing Factory Team’s Davide Guarneri and also the ultra fast privateers DP19 Racing Yamaha’s David Philippaerts, Hitachi Construction Machinery Revo KTM’s Shaun Simpson, Wilvo Forkrent KTM’s Steven Frossard and MX Racing Team’s Rui Gonçalves.

2014 MXGP of Qatar MXGP Top 3

1. Gautier Paulin

2. Maximilian Nagl

3. Antonio Cairoli

Starting with the dude rocking the big bad number 1 plate, the FIM MX2 World Champion Jordi Tixier has got the target on his back this season and is already looking at home on his Monster Energy Kawasaki. Meanwhile, how Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jeffrey Herlings will perform is probably the hottest topic since he has only been on the bike a few weeks since recovering from the complications of his broken femur.

Monster Energy Kawasaki’s other young gun Dylan Ferrandis is another rider we can expect to see footing it at the pointy end of the field along with the likes of Wilvo Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Aleksandr Tonkov and Honda Gariboldi’s Tim Gajser. Standing Construct Yamaha’s Valentin Guillod could also raise some eyebrows as could his teammate Julien Lieber.

What about Monster Energy DRT Kawasaki’s Max Anstie? His performance here last year was unforgettable. If he rides like that again this year, he could smoke everyone, although judging from the pre-season events Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Pauls Jonass could be the cat among the pigeons.

1. Jeffrey Herlings

2. Dylan Ferrandis

3. Romain Febvre

The FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship is going to be epic this year. The three-time FIM WMX World Champion Kiara Fontanesi is not going to hand the gold plate over without a fight, while most eyes will be on the vice world champion Monster Energy Kawasaki Bud Racing’s Meghan Rutledge who absolutely dominated here in Qatar last year.

Team One One Four’s Livia Lancelot will also be a force this year as will the young Dutch sensation Nancy Van De Ven and MVR-D Honda’s Natalie Kane.

Women on the gas!

The FIM Women’s Motocross World Championship is back on the rise, and this year it’s set to be even better than last. It’s gnarly how well some girls can man dirtbikes, machines that are more than double their body weight. With only five points separating the eventual FIM WMX World Championship victor, Italian, Kiara Fontanesi and Australia’s star on the rise Meghan Rutledge, there is no doubt their will be a few chicks out for redemption. Included in that statement is France’s 2008 FIM WMX World Champion Livia Lancelot, as well as Irelands Natalie Kane and the young Dutch rider Nancy Van de Ven among many others.

They're ready! Are you?

Youthstream partners with Polisport

FUNCHAL (Portugal), 28 January 2015 – A few years back Youthstream had a great relationship with Polisport, the brand that masters in after-market plastic parts and accessories. Now with 2015 set to be one of the best seasons ever in the history of the FIM Motocross World Championship, Youthstream is pleased to announce that Polisport is back on board and have chosen to use MXGP for optimum advertisement and exposure of their brand.

With the inking of the deal between Youthstream and Polisport, Polisport’s bike stand and bike mat will feature in the MXGP podium ceremonies. They will also have a number of advertising billboards strategically placed on the tracks, giving the brand great television coverage, as well as worldwide recognition. Polisport will also have a display area inside the MXGP paddock where fans can physically view and gather information about their products.

Polisport was founded in 1978 and their first products were replica plastics for motorcycles. This has been the core business of the company since then and, nowadays, Polisport is the leading supplier of the top motorcycle brands in the industry, as well as the partner with the best teams in the MXGP, such as Suzuki Factory Racing and Kawasaki Racing Team. The inspiration to form a company focused on off-road bikes came from the heart, with the founder and current CEO – Pedro Araújo - is an avid off-road rider. Since 1978, Polisport has made a solid name for itself producing top of the line after market plastics for motocross, enduro and supermoto bikes. Their products include full replica plastic kits, headlights, handguards, body protections and some of the most innovative accessories on the market.

Pedro Araújo, Polisport CEO, comments: “Partnering with FIM Motocross World Championship is very important to Polisport as a brand, not only for the visibility and exposure but also to strengthen the ties further with the competition, teams, riders and fans of the sport. We’ve been designing and developing top quality products for the off-road market and the MXGP is the best place to feature and test them to the limits.”
